What else can the fingerprint sensor do? - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

I'm not a developer but my friends and I have an imagination...
In the same way you can swipe down on the fingerprint sensor to display the notification shade, can it be used to scroll through pictures, scroll open tabs in a browser, and be used in other apps to execute actions that are typically left to right sort of commands?
Discuss?

I would love to see this as well, just like a little touch pad

It would be cool to have different finger prints from different fingers activate different functions. Like my index finger will unlock the phone, my middle finger will take a screenshot, other fingers can activate toggles like airplane mode for a radio reset or turning wifi on and off

This is the best idea anyone has had ever.

On android-O using Fingerprint Gestures App you can perform custom actions like scroll and take picture and many more

(REQ) Two finger roatate

How hard would it be to make a app that runs in the back round that works like the new ipod's touch screen rotation feature,
For those who don't known you place a finger and thumb at opposite ends in the corners so top left, bottom right, and twist right or left, and the screen rotates that direction in which you twist, i and im sure others will find this great to have, i normally have screen rotation off, but sometimes need it for messaging and internet etc.
as you can see in this little apple video here.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZnSKvMP14A
Depends on the phone hardware...
But, in my opinion a useless feature. But then again a normally use the double tap to zoom on the browser.
Im not on about zooming, im on about rotating the screen, with out having to go back and turn it on and off from the home screen lol.

Did you even bother to read the OP or even the the thread's topic? He's talking about screen rotation not zooming.
I love how people declare ideas and apps as "useless" just because *they* wouldn't use it.

I'd like this feature too. I dont like switching rotation on and off, but i sometimes need too. Having it off, and use fingers to rotate would be a good solution.
Trouble in programming this is prolly that it is hard to not let it collide with other apps. (what if another app uses this multi-touch-gesture?) whitelisting apps is an option at this point in time, cause i dont know of very much apps that use this gesture, but they could become more popular with all the new multitouch devices out there

Maybe you misunderstood what he meant. The way I understand it, he only mentioned the zooming with double-tap to signal that he doesn't even use multi-touch to zoom within the browser; henceforth, he finds the idea of multi-touch rotation useless.
And to be totally honest, I find it useless too. The only reason the ipod nano has multi-touch rotation, that I can guess, is because they couldn't fit an accelerometer in such a small space and refused to change the dimensions. Either that, or just something else to cut their costs and make more of a profit.
Id love to see something like this. I too keep auto rotation off, but being able to rotate with a simple gesture would be awesome!

Did YOU even read my post?! I said why it might not work, then proceeded to post MY OPINION!
I could have said it worse like: Don't be lazy and leave it on and rotate the damn phone with your hand.
That ipod touch probably just does rotate by touch because it doesn't have an accelerometer to know when you've physically rotated the device.
Now a way of disabling accelerometer auto rotation would be nice for when I want to do something like read an eBook while laying on my side.
Actually, the iPod Touch DOES have an accelerometer, as does the new nano. The new nano uses its accelerometer to detect when you shake it for "shuffle on shake." WHy they couldn't use it to detect orientation of the iPod, I have no clue. But the iPod touch DOES do auto-rotate. I know this b/c my 1st gen touch does this for many of its apps (which I hardly use.... it's a glorified mac and apple tv remote now).
I think this could be a useful app. I don't like certain apps to rotate and as such turn auto-rotate on and off, but with auto-rotate off I sometimes wish I COULD rotate the screen in certain instances. Something like this would be pretty nice. It'd have to be light on the cpu though and not collide with other gestures (the only gesture I have seen on my Droid X that are multi-touch is the pinch-zoom.... all the other gestures are single touch ones) that are multi-touch.
I'd say go for developing this app. I'd be pretty cool PLUS you'd learn alot about how android handles gestures and such.
I would really like such a feature, iam actually working on an app/widget that turns the screen manually, because just sometimes you need it landscape but dont want to activate the auto-orientation...
I am with this idea 100%. I find the auto-rotate waaaay too sensitive & it rotates constantly when I don't want it to. So I turned mine off. But there are rare occasions when you want to rotate (like looking at pictures) and I have to go into a widget to turn it on & turn it back off after.
A manual rotate would be nice.
PS - A sensitivity thing for rotation would be nice too - ie, only rotate when you're 85 degrees + sideways instead of rotating with like a 15 degree tilt.
Mine will auto rotate at times (my g1 and iPod touch do this too btw) when I pull minor G's while driving (like hairpin u-turns or simply having fun in the curves ). Then again, these maneuvers are ones that can't be pulled in your generic automatic or road boat.

add my name to the list of people that would love to see this!
Hmm.. Would be a fun project to start learning android programming...
Now if only I had some time to spare...
This feature would be very useful, why?
- Auto-rotate : since it's called "auto", that means you can not control your screen with rotation. I usually lie on the bed and use the phone for reading, web browsing and I really don't want my screen from keeping rotating. You would say I should distable the auto-rotation, right? But I don't wanna keep doing that.
A manual gesture would be really nice and very USEFUL!
I think the sensitivity option would really be the best. Not saying I wouldn't use the finger way but I think the "auto" rotation should just work better.

My problems are that it is to slow and that when i am lying on my side surfing it auto rotates.

A way to turn on my tablets screen when walking past it?

Hey guys, I've an Advent Vega, and would love if I could find a way to use the front camera to activate the screen when passing?
I'd leave it plugged in by the door, so as I'm leaving/coming home I can see the weather forecast and any tasks or emails waiting for me.

Use smart screen on/off app.. It uses proximity sensor to lock or unlock device.. you can probably Swype your hand at the sensor n unlock it..

That's aaalmost what would be ideal... just... i'd like it to be from the camera... for instance when I turn the coridor light on when I get home, or walk past it, so I can take a quick look passively without having to interact.
Anybody else got a suggestion? Maybe something paired with Tasker somehow?

One thing you must know if that your front camera cannot sense your motion or anything.. no hardware support for it.. It's just like how your eyes cannot detect smell..
At the max you can make use of your proximity sensor for that purpose..

Yes, I'm just wondering if there's a way to do it with a 3rd party app. Something that would keep the front camera turned on or take photos every second, and then continually process images for motion detection. Once detected, it would then activate the screen.

You could also keep another smartphone on your person and have the two devices paired and set the phone left at home to wake up when the paired device comes within range.

I'm not certain, regardless of the setup you use, you need to be aware that nothing will work to do this if the device that you want to wake is in sleep mode or if the device has a screen lock enabled, no matter what you do. You'd have to permanently disable your pass/pin/pattern lock on the device that you want to wake remotely so that the device can stay in a state where it can detect the paired device when it approaches. You would still need to unlock the "normal" lockscreen that would normally require you to swipe the screen, but there is an option that automatically unlocks the screen when a paired "trusted device" is detected.
There are some options available that can wake the device when a paired device is detected, provided that the device to be woken is not in deep sleep or has a pass/pin/pattern lock enabled. Combine that with the "trusted device" option and it should do what you want and none of it should require root.
There is also a more complicated method to have the device set to wake when the paired device comes in range, but it requires writing some code and implementing the code on the device. But I think there is a way to do this with just enabling/disabling some settings, pairing the devices and setting the paired device that you will keep with you as the "trusted device", either via built in settings(if the device has them) or by installing an app that lets you connect the device as a "trusted device".
What is the android version on the device that you want to wake up remotely?
The tablet is TB-X606F on android 10 and my phone is on 12. I have disabled all kinds of screen lock, even the swip, so as soon and you press the unlock button you are presented straight away with the desktop. I can't though see any options around unlocking when paired, I'm going to put Tasker on the tablet and see if there is any options for screen unlock when in range and screen off when not in range. Failing that whole idea, all I can think of is using Flux to dim the screen to 0 when I turn the living room lights off at night effectively rendering the screen off at nighttimes?

Edges are being cut/shorten on Instagram

Hello guys,
I am fairly new with Huawei phones and phones with a notch.
Especially when using Instagram (browisng stories), the sides of the app are being cut, like the image is just smaller than on a normal/different phone. So if there is a text just on the edge, it would be cut and you would not be able to read it.
I was wondering if there is anyway to fix it.
I heared there is something like "fullscreen mode" for apps, but when I go to Settings and click it, Instagram is not on the list. Could I disable it (cause maybe it is enabled), just for this specific app?
No root etc.
Kind regards!

Im experiencing the exact same issue. What you can do is hiding the noth in system settings. Then you`ll get Insta (including stories) in fullscreen. BUT: Then the buttons for Text, Pen, image dont react to your touches. Its a complete mess. Can you confirm the problems with touch in hide notch mode?
I will check my IG app in a sec, but I think fullscreen mode is only available for apps that don't support the display.
I think apps like IG that natively 'support' these displays just don't display in the fullscreen mode settings.

The problem still occurs with hide notch mode ON, it is a bit better, but still edges on the sides are being cropped.
@Ephixi4 yeah I reinstalled the app, but fullscreen is not an option for IG. So it seems like it is either problem with a ROM or IG problem with not displaying their content properly for different res/notches.

I use the finger print scanner instead of navigation bar, that seems to work just fine.
I really wonder if it's OS issue for cropping app like that or IG.
Hoping for workaround soon.
@Larlen so I have notch visible but I have my soft keys hidden and I use the fingerprint scanner as navigation button.
Had no issues with IG app, maybe because of that?
But it seems more that the app is not very well designed to fit these screens and notch. When you want to edit a picture the brightness toggle is cropped because of the notch.
Sent from my EML-L29 using XDA Labs
It doesn't seem to be an issue with the notch, rather an issue with the screen ratio, with the notch not hidden it's 18.7/9, and with it hidden its 18/9, and it looks like alot of the apps are not optimized for 2/1 screen ratios yet

I can confirm this. The story buttons are not responsive. I can get them to work sometimes after tapping on them continuously but it's super annoying. However, I found out that swiping up opens the sticker menu so that's a workaround at least.

Well, yes, but when I swipe up and see the emojis, they dont react neither...
Have the same issue. The buttons are not responsive because they are in the notch area. I've found they do work when you tap below the buttons as if they were below the notch area. The phone thinks the are still in the same spot as usually but it shows them in the top corner.
My insta stories also cuts of edges from pictures I made vertically. It's because of the screen ratio. I can't get them right even if I cut it the right ratio with an other app.
Why instagram still did not updated the app. The problem annoys too much. Anyone knows a workaround?
I use the fingerprint sensor to navigate and not the classic Android bottom bar.
I just tried right now on a story: if I use instead the classic bottom bar, I can see the whole story. If I hide the bottom bar, then the story takes the full screen and it crops the edges, right and left...
As someone said, it has to do with developers and not the phone I guess.
I hope IG will fix it soon
hey guys i am using the nova3i and have the same problem. What sux more that my friend told me that even my stories are being cropped once seen by them on their devices .

Pocket unlock

Had anyone experienced their device being unlocked while in their pocket. Mine had several times, even some quick toggles have been changed from where I had them set. Apps opened, not just opened but digging into multiple button presses. Even today mi wife says I called her twice while phone in pocket. I use fingerprint security with pin backup and somehow phone is bypassing both of theses in my pocket. I've tried numerous times to replicate out of my pocket with no avail. I'm on stock TMobile no mods or rooted.

Weird. Do you have fingerprint lock enabled?
Yes I do. From what I can find on the web previous OnePlus devices had a Pocket Mode which is not present on the 7 pro. But viewing T-Mobiles website under settings list it shows it is in the utilities section under settings. But not on my phone. I even searched for it with the search option at the top of settings menu.
I've also noticed that in settings under utilities there is a section called app locker, when I click on it, it asks for pin and then just resorts back to the utilities menu giving me no option to add apps to list. It does nothing.

What Pocket Mode did (I had it on my 3T) was ignore screen touches, if the proximity sensor sensed an object nearby (assuming it was your pocket).
Even without Pocket Mode, a press on the screen, or movement of the gyro should only turn on the "ambient display" screen. You can't do anything from that screen except scan your fingerprint (which you confirmed you have fingerprint security enabled). So I'm puzzled how the butt dials or other things occurred in your pocket.
I suppose it's possible the power button is being accidentally pressed in your pants. Which brings up the lock screen - slightly different from the ambient display screen, as it gives access to the quick toggles, camera and voice assist. But it would seem like a strange combination of accidental power button pressing and screen touches happening in your pants, to make the things you mentioned happen. TWSS

How is tha gonna stop accidental fingerprint detection and vibration??
The solution is to deactivate the fingerprint sensor ?
More seriously, there is no false detection, the sensor is doing its job, as soon as it feels a finger it tries to visualize the fingerprint, I do not see what is boring, If it wasn't so sharp it would be a nightmare to unlock the device !

No, you're wrong. It could be set to only vibrate when it detects a correct fingerprint. Which would be much more logical in my opinion. Or give the option to only activate the fingerprint sensor after power button is pressed.

the vibration is not there to validate the unlocking, something that we see anyway when the home screen opens, but to say that the analysis of the finger starts and that we are at the right place..
The last option might be fine for you, but personally it's a waste of time having to press a key before I can scan my finger, not sure Poco implements this In a future update ! ?

Yes indeed having more options is positive, I'm just saying that I don't think they will, as it's a pretty special option that very few require.
Normally if you are looking for the device in the pocket, it should not turn on or vibrate because it is deactivated by the proximity sensor, in any case mine remains as dead if I hide the part upper screen..
I hope for you that a function will emerge
For me, it is clear that the "old" hardware fingerprint sensor is much better than the modern software sensor that's imposed on new devices.
But we cannot change this, so yes : some options for lock screen vibration activation-deactivation are welcome. Me too don't like to feel the phone vibration every time I touch accidentally the screen trying to extract something of my pocket, including the phone.
