Hello everybody.
We all know that Moto Display is very useful and shows incoming notification. In Moto G and E devices, it activates when the phone is moved from its position, or when a flip cover over the phone is opened. However I have heard that in Moto X devices, it activates even if you wave over the proximity sensor.
So I thought of making a small app that does the same. It is on Play Store.
MotoDisplay handwave

Thanks for reporting. As far as I know, Moto E3 power has Moto Display.
This app checks for the availability of a package com.motorola.motodisplay. This is the package name of Moto Display in all Moto phones. Maybe that is not the package name in the case of E3.
It would be great if you could help me find out what is the package name in E3 as I don't have this device for testing purposes.
EDIT: E3 doesn't support Moto Display
It works perfectly with my moto g4 plus. What happens with the Music Volume Control Notification? I don't see.
And for the "Wave-n-hold for screen off" it works but when i touch my digital sensor my phone ask me for my pin to enter. Is ti normal?
Thank you for your great job!!!

Music volume control notification gives you an extra bubble on Moto Display to control the volume. Just like you can control Google Play Music directly from Moto Display.
The fingerprint sensor won't work with "wave and hold". It is an Android limitation and is normal.
Lastly, please reply in the relevant device's thread. This is for Moto E3 not G4.

Sorry, Moto E3 doesn't have Moto Display.
You can try Acdisplay... It is quite similar to moto dispaly.. it is available on play store for free... Go and try it...you are definitely gonna love it!
Thanks so much for this app. It's awesome!
Can we launch moto display in another way (eg via tasker)? In tasker I get a permission denied and I can't find the solution.
I'd like to put back the pulsing functionality in moto display. Simply have it wake the screen periodically to display notifications.
Thanks,
David.

I just think this post would be better being moved to a compatible device thread.
You know as well as I do people with an E3/E3 power will download it and then come here crying it doesn't work......

What is the sense of this app? Work only as charger LED or when connected to PC.... I hope in future, notifiaction like Moto X Play LED is possible.
It also works using the LED Control App from the google play store. But I don't think that LED light is very useful
Didn't work for me
Didn't work for me, works only for charger and pc, i would like to recieve notification LED.

Search, it's posted all over the G4 forums.
can we enable it for notifications also?

Thank You :good:
It is kind of working. No blinking, the settings are not always respected - like if you set it to be on only during charging, it won't turn off at the end .
3 stars out of 5.
Works for notifications
Tasker is able to control the light. Means you can use it for notifications. There's also light flow that's able to control the light

Yes light flow and Tasker both work fine. Play around with direct control, root and the different LEDs detected. Notification test feature is v useful in determining the right combo. Tasker works directly when selecting charging led.
Someone knows if moto G4 PLAY has hidden led too?
here it does not work, but I'll try again .. XT1640
Custom ROMs like CyanogenMod does not have Moto Display. Ambient Display is not bad, but Moto Display uses the sensors more efficiently. Also many people prefer Moto Display over Ambient Display. So it is a request to port the Official Moto Display app as a flashable zip, just like Moto Camera and Moto Gallery has been ported.
Pretty sure it has been tried and failed... it ties into the stock ROM's kernel and framework in ways the other apps do not in order to function, and they are not supported in 3rd party ROMs.

The application in question has already been tried by me for those days in cm13, I tried a port that was unsuccessful because I needed to include your work in a kernel .... as I am without server I can not create kernels or roms, I'm really just helping in developments,
TIP:
Cm14.1 has its ambient display improved compared to cm13, I realized it!
Try to use and verify, after all, it may be that later the same will come to cm13.

I'll check if I still have something in my github account, so I'll see step information right here for you.
I'am interested and would like to know , how ambient display works? Is it similar to the moto display? (it prevents to waking up the device?), because we can read:
"Moto Display has been engineered to show critical information even when you phone is asleep. Even though the display fades in and out to ensure you are notified of the important stuff, we use very little power (just a few percent of the total battery capacity)"
Thanks

Display environment is the same as Moto Display, believe me, I use it here in cm14.1 and I did not see any big differences other than the bubble you slip, but everything notifies very well and works the same way.
Moto Display is a great feature. This app helps to activate Moto Display by a handwave gesture over the proximity sensor. This app was originally intended for Moto G though, but I am told that Moto X1 also doesn't have this feature after Lollipop update. I would like if people test this app on STOCK ROM and tell me if it's working.

This is the most recent version in Play Store. The app now has a sensitivity slider. If setting the sensitivity to maximum doesn't work, check the Force Notification option.
Please try this method and let me know. Thanks.

Moto X1 has a particular problem with Moto Display. It has been reported multiple times in Motorola forum. Not the app's fault.
The LED is confirmed by Motorola. I asked them a question and got an answer.
My question:
" This little dot on the right side of the flash in front is what it is then? You can see it in good lighting (moto g6). "
Response from the Motorola:
" Thanks for asking, that's interesting. The little dot on the right side part of the front flash is a sign of life LED light. It would only show/activate when the battery is deeply discharged and it's plugged into the charger. "
There is hope that in unofficial rom you will be able to use it.
Woah, woah, woah, hold up. It had an LED the entire time? So, why can't we use it? Unless it's a single color LED.

Probably all Moto G6 variants have this. Unfortunately, I can not find anywhere information whether it is a single-color LED. Motorola is pursuing a strange policy, the previous models also had a hidden diode and hardly anyone knew about it.

For now I do not see newer firmware and update system for Moto G6, I do not know how it is with the Plus version. This diode is useless. You have to wait for effective solutions from unofficial developers. Probably all you need is a well-functioning root and the right application to add functionality to this diode.
EX Kernel Manager can trigger the led to do things, I have root to it works. I've got it blinking on charge and solid when done.

I can also confirm this works through EX Kernel Manager on my Moto G6 Play XT1922-7 Boost Mobile variant, I'm using the "Battery charging blink full solid full" option in the app, this is pretty neat lol! :good:
Edit: The LED is to the left of the camera on my G6 Play
Can also confirm using ex kernel manager with xt1922-7 boost variant that it does allow the led to work with charging. As well as a few other options lol just which we could choose more than one led option. Would be nice to have it for charging AND notifications lol
Maybe contacting the dev or if someone knows how that works can build an app to control it?
After installing root on my moto g6, I launched this application:

Hi! I recently rooted my G6 Plus in order to use this charging LED. My goal is to make it blink softly when a notification arrives. I tried using Tasker according to this guide, but it didn't really work: I got it to ascend the brightness level, but it won't descend at all, even when running the second while-loop separately. After this, I can't even manage to change the brightness level until reboot. Strangely though, the script works as intended when run from adb shell. I started using "echo 1 > /sys/class/leds/charging/blink" when a notification arrives and 0 when the screen is unlocked. However, this is not ideal since the default blink is not very soft and the maximum brightness is too high. How could I make the bash script work properly in Tasker?
@pake10
You will not change the brightness or color of this diode (it's one color) so do not get tired. It's a waste of your time.
@kemoti
Thanks for answering — however, I did manage to change the brightness and make it "blink" with the script. The color can't be changed and that's okay. It seems that my problem is with Tasker since it works fine from adb Shell.
EDIT: I got it working by creating my own application, for some reason Tasker and other similar applications didn't execute the bash script properly.
hahah motorola has been putting this led on every phone i eventually had bought. the first moto g had it for notifications but g4 plus and g6 play have is as a sign of life
I got the diode working via the Resurrection Kernel when my phone is charging, but the diode is so small that you can't even see that there's anything going on. The capability is still a nice touch though.

Thanks--your hint worked for me!
I have a G6 with Nov , 2018 patch (OPSS27.104-92-2), I can control the LED from tasker with:
Code:
echo 1 > /sys/class/leds/charging/brightness # turn on
echo 0 > /sys/class/leds/charging/brightness # turn off
I got rather used to double-tapping the screen on my prior phones to either wake up or turn off the screen. I cannot find that feature within the Moto G7 Power Android 9 Pie configuration / setup. Looking around, this feature seems to be available in Android Pie generally.
What am I missing?
It's not a native feature. We're you using an LG phone? You can get it back if you use Nova launcher. At least for screen off, won't work for screen on.
As stated above, knock on is a feature of LG phones.
As an alternative, look for WaveUp on the play store. Open source app that turns in the wave feature not included in the G7.
Not as nice as the knock on, but one you get used to basically touching the proximity sensor, it works the same.

It should become a moto gesture, that'd be EPIC.
LG even make a fridge with a knock-on light so you can see what drinks you've got in the door.
Sorry, nothing useful to add! It's not a native feature of pie, however.
Tap your screen to semi-wake so lockscreen clock (if set) will appear then scroll up from bottom of screen and pin input appears. Proximity sensor seems poor so many taps may be needed.
Wouldn't the Face Unlock be much easier and prevent the need for a double tap? Of course it wouldn't work in dark areas. Things like these I think they implement because it might be better or easier
If someone makes a custom kernel and adds DTTW then your in like flin.
