The LED is confirmed by Motorola. I asked them a question and got an answer.
My question:
" This little dot on the right side of the flash in front is what it is then? You can see it in good lighting (moto g6). "
Response from the Motorola:
" Thanks for asking, that's interesting. The little dot on the right side part of the front flash is a sign of life LED light. It would only show/activate when the battery is deeply discharged and it's plugged into the charger. "
There is hope that in unofficial rom you will be able to use it.
Woah, woah, woah, hold up. It had an LED the entire time? So, why can't we use it? Unless it's a single color LED.

Probably all Moto G6 variants have this. Unfortunately, I can not find anywhere information whether it is a single-color LED. Motorola is pursuing a strange policy, the previous models also had a hidden diode and hardly anyone knew about it.

I just saw this light turn on when I rebooted after flashing the OPW27.113-45 from this website
HTML:

. Maybe it already works somehow in default ROM?

For now I do not see newer firmware and update system for Moto G6, I do not know how it is with the Plus version. This diode is useless. You have to wait for effective solutions from unofficial developers. Probably all you need is a well-functioning root and the right application to add functionality to this diode.
EX Kernel Manager can trigger the led to do things, I have root to it works. I've got it blinking on charge and solid when done.

I can also confirm this works through EX Kernel Manager on my Moto G6 Play XT1922-7 Boost Mobile variant, I'm using the "Battery charging blink full solid full" option in the app, this is pretty neat lol! :good:
Edit: The LED is to the left of the camera on my G6 Play
Can also confirm using ex kernel manager with xt1922-7 boost variant that it does allow the led to work with charging. As well as a few other options lol just which we could choose more than one led option. Would be nice to have it for charging AND notifications lol
Maybe contacting the dev or if someone knows how that works can build an app to control it?
After installing root on my moto g6, I launched this application:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=br.com.itsmeton.motoledenabler&hl=en
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cyb.satheesh.lednotify
The diode works!
We need someone who will do a more polished application for our phones.

We know the diode works, we already confirmed that with EX Kernel Manager.
Hi! I recently rooted my G6 Plus in order to use this charging LED. My goal is to make it blink softly when a notification arrives. I tried using Tasker according to this guide, but it didn't really work: I got it to ascend the brightness level, but it won't descend at all, even when running the second while-loop separately. After this, I can't even manage to change the brightness level until reboot. Strangely though, the script works as intended when run from adb shell. I started using "echo 1 > /sys/class/leds/charging/blink" when a notification arrives and 0 when the screen is unlocked. However, this is not ideal since the default blink is not very soft and the maximum brightness is too high. How could I make the bash script work properly in Tasker?
@pake10
You will not change the brightness or color of this diode (it's one color) so do not get tired. It's a waste of your time.
@kemoti
Thanks for answering — however, I did manage to change the brightness and make it "blink" with the script. The color can't be changed and that's okay. It seems that my problem is with Tasker since it works fine from adb Shell.
EDIT: I got it working by creating my own application, for some reason Tasker and other similar applications didn't execute the bash script properly.
hahah motorola has been putting this led on every phone i eventually had bought. the first moto g had it for notifications but g4 plus and g6 play have is as a sign of life
I got the diode working via the Resurrection Kernel when my phone is charging, but the diode is so small that you can't even see that there's anything going on. The capability is still a nice touch though.

Thanks--your hint worked for me!
I have a G6 with Nov , 2018 patch (OPSS27.104-92-2), I can control the LED from tasker with:
Code:
echo 1 > /sys/class/leds/charging/brightness # turn on
echo 0 > /sys/class/leds/charging/brightness # turn off

Maybe this belongs in the development area but...
The evo3d got a notification led wich i like...what about if we can make the capacitive button led's blink or something when we have a mail and sms...
Maybe more guys have this idea but well....tell me if its possible and a good idea
It is probably possible and I think developers will have a hand on it if they havent yet.
It will be eventually supported.
this idea is awesome. i think it is possible

Glad someone's liking it
This would be a nice to have for sure. If can light up those "buttons" to use for notification, it will be great.
This is already done with O2X, so it is definitely on the way for us
My previous phone was GalaxyS which had no led aswell.
I used a programmed called NoLed on the Galaxy. Installed on Optimus 3d and seems to work fine.

It doesnt support the capacitive button led's.
Sorry i was only suggesting this as a temporary alternative until further developments.
I really like this idea!
But is it possible to expand on it further?
Since there's 4 capacitive buttons on the phone, are we able to make them blink individually?
For example... home button blinks when we have a missed call, menu button blinks when we have a message, back button blinks when we have an email, and etc?
Noled seems to be working fine for me...

Unfortunately not. As the app page states, AMOLED uses no power displaying a fully black pixel so displaying alerts on the screen takes very little power.
Now as the O3D has an old fashioned LCD, it consumes potentially a ton of power just to turn the screen on at all, because it has to light the whole screen just to start. Plus, it uses the MOST power displaying black (least displaying all white), so it would need the opposite behaviour.
[UPDATE]
Ah I see you can make the screen blink, I didn't notice that at first. Might actually be useful then.
i've tested it with the developer of the LG notification app. it seems, that the files which have to be used are'nt writeable. so without root it won't work
perhaps we should send tons of mails to LG, that they make it possible.

Also the notifications can have a time limit, i have set at 15mins and haven't noticed any battery drain.
Modified 2X/Black touch led notification app
Hi guys,
I've modified Martin Börjesson's app and now it works on ROOTed O3D and I'll upload it soon.
To-do:
1) fading doesn't work
2) change of brightness doesn't work
What will never work
1) separate LEDs - I don't think there's a way to control each of them, only all 4 LEDs

I used LF in the past before I rooted and had issues with it.....does it work better on a rooted phone?
I used Blackberry's before Android came out and miss the function of changing the LED to colors for specific apps.
Please advise and thank you!
Idk if it'll work better on rooted devices, but I know on AOKP, there's a feature built in to change the color depending on the app and also just standard notifications.

Idk the difference in use if you're rooted or not but as a rooted user Light Flow hasn't failed me personally. I've been using it since the dev fixed the LED issue on GSIII's in Nov or Dec and I think its great. Since I use TW roms, LED color tweaking isn't supported within the rom settings so Light Flow cemented its presence on my phone. As tylerawhon said, AOSP roms often have this built-in so those folks may not have as much a need for Light Flow.
I'm giving Light Manager a try, and it seems to have what I'm looking for in an LED app. We'll see how it goes!

Since the new VRBMB1 or the last update VRBLK3, Light Flow has been working without the need to use root or the special US S3 mode. I found out myself that for VRBMB1 you must have the Notifications enabled in the LED Indicator settings or you won't be seeing any LED statuses. Just as long as you uncheck all the other stuff, it won't conflict with Light .
On my original G Flex I was able to use an app called Light Manager, and that worked flawlessly. It seems Lollipop doesn't want to play nice. One of the features I became most accustomed to was the ability to know exactly what app had a notification before even turning on the screen.
Anybody had any luck controlling their LED color and flash rate based on specific app notifications? If so, what app do you use?
Light Flow
UPDATE:
I got Light Flow working. I'm not sure what exactly I did, but it involved toggling the sound settings until I was on loud (sound on) mode. I toggled the Notification LED switch in the settings. I have Light Flow running in Root mode, but I'm pretty sure it was working before I toggled that. I also have it controlling led:flash_0, led:flash_1, and wled under the Additional LEDs found section.
As LED control was one of the most important features for me, I'm not going to futz any further with what I have working. However, if others experience the issue, they're welcome to try each of these things individually to isolate what actually got it to work.
Lightflow not working with Flex 2
Hey Cmcarboni,
would you be so kind as to post your settings with which your Flex 2 functions with Lightflow?
The led:flash_0 and led:flash_1 I can get to work, but I am just interested in the front notification LED and tried nearly every combination of settings without any success.
Thanks in advance!
Edit: It's the H955 with Android 5.1.1 (V15c-EUR-XX)
I'm trying to get the notification LED to work while the screen is on.
I've managed to get it working while the screen is off. While that is nice, I want it to work while the screen is off too. I've found this guide and tried it, but it doesn't work on my OPO, which has a different ROM version. I have Xposed and XLED installed.
My situation:
Light Flow Legacy
Omnirom 6.0.1-20160116-find7op-HOMEMADE
Does anybody know a way to get the screen on notification led working? I know it must be possible, because when the phone setting is enabled to show the LED while charging, it does show while screen on or off. However, Light Flow notifications only show while the screen is off.

Not related to your question but get on the Omni nightlies there are some great new additions to the ROM. Don't dirty flash from a homemade though. Clean flash and go through settings, Advanced, more, phone app etc. Also you can edit power profiles with your own CPU and GPU settings for specific apps.
I've never seen a way to have light flow work with screen on. I bought the app ages ago but don't use it ?

Where do I find the nightlies then? I thought I had the latest installed, because I found a thread mentioning the latest stable release being from 2015, so I figured the homemade version I have from 2016 was the latest. However, searching some more yielded http://dl.omnirom.org/find7op/ . Are those the actual nightlies you're talking about?

Hello all. Since our Motorols do not have LEDs, I have found a very good application that solves this problem by enabling flash notification. The application is free and without advertising. Maybe some of you know her but maybe I helped someone.
Google Play:

XDA:

A big thank you to the author of the application.
actually i noticed a LED in the top right upon booting the phone for the first time, so physically, there is a notification LED. But, i think its disabled in the android software, maybe a custom rom can fix that at some point.

In fact, if you look at it in good light, you can see a small dot on the right side of the flash. However, I'm not sure if it's a led. It would be fun because then they will do it in unofficial roms.

It is a white LED. If you let your phone discharge its battery all the way down to nothing, this light will turn on when you charge it. After a few moments, it then turns off. No idea why Moto set it up this way. I'd rather have the LED on all the time when charging.
Ex kernel manager gives you options to use the white led. I have it set to be on when my phone is charging lol
