[verizon] Banned from my home tower. - General Questions and Answers

So I've been on Verizon prepaid for at least a year. Last Thursday (night) 3g stopped connecting and the phone drained the battery down a bit. I switch to 1x and internet works. I thought it was a problem with my service but as soon as I leave the area I can switch to 3g and connect just fine. As soon as I come home its back to no internet or 1x service.
Calling support was no help and they can't figure out what's wrong. They keep trying to blame the phone but I switch phones and behavior is the same. Only difference they can see is that my current imei isn't the same as what I registered with. I can go switch that back but I get the feeling it won't help. I have to reflash the stock rom to see network messages or change back so I'll do that on the weekend just to be sure.
Anyone work with the network and can shed some light on this? Anyone one ever been banned off one tower only?

Widget turned off 4g/3g, can't turn it back from 1x

So I was playing around trying to delete widgets and one of them took out my 4g/3g connection. The icon is stuck in 1x, and I can't find any setting to change it back.
dail *#*#4636#*#* . This will take you to the network settings. select phone information. And then scroll down to set preferred network type.
I did that, set it to both LTE mode as well as CDMA+LTE/Evdo, but then even when rebooting to toggle it, it shows Network Type as CDMA - 1xRTT
I'm seeing other threads with people having issues with being stuck in 1x, so maybe its just not me, and I disconnected and just happened to not get it back
I am having this issue as well. Rooted last night. In the process of removing system apps removed something I shouldnt have. Went to flash my back up created by Rom Man only to find out it wasnt made, fail, so i flashed the custom rom by Chingy. Since flashing the rom I only have 1X service no matter what I set the phone to on the toggle.
its not just you bro ive been having 3g and 4g problems all morning. I am in queens NY...if they dont get this fix before the 14 days I am returning this phone and going back to t-mobile
I had thus problem. Just turn airplane mode on for a minute, then turn it off and you should get 3g again.

I'm not even rooted, and I began experiencing this issue this morning after having my phone off and plugged in last night.
EDIT: I tested the above fix, and it didn't work for me. Every time the phone tries to turn 3g on it will appear in the status bar for a split second and then everything turns off, even 1x. weird.
It's a network problem on verizon's end. I'm in Cincinnati and data is not working at all.
I am getting this too - according to tech support, there is a problem with the 4G network right now - however why it doesn't fall back to 3G I don't know (unless there is a problem with that too).
I too am in New York, so it might be localized to NYC - They even tried resetting something on my VZ profile.
I'm still on the call as we speak, but I get the feeling given the number of people reporting this, it is a VZ problem.

It's definitely not just a localized problem. I'm all the way out in Utah (no 4g service here yet) and the 3g is completely jacked.
Yup confirmed with tech support, there's a nationwide outage with 4g data and they are working it with the highest priority, the tech said. Ah the costs of new technology. Always will have issues at start.
Same thing here, Pensacola, FL. Just went out on my drive to work today, now it's 1x across the board for me and the gf...she has an incredible and I have the tbolt...
Add me to the list. Been on the phone with tech support for 52 minutes and counting. I'm on hold right now and thought I would check xda. Stuck in 1x if I even have anything. I am about 35 miles south of Pittsburgh, PA. Phone is completely stock and worked perfect yesterday. Also, the tech said DO NOT dial *228 from the Thunderbolt. I didn't, but he said for future referece it will force the phone to use only 1x and 3g. Nice to know lol they didn't say that crap when I bought it. At least their tech support guys are super friendly.
Weird. Im in Akron Ohio and have full bars 4G. Just did speed test and getting 15Mbps down 20 up. Downloaded app off market just to be sure and downloaded without a hitch. This must not be affecting whole nation. (Yes my Wi-Fi is off lol)
Just got off the phone with VZ Tech support. He said there is not an acknowledge problem with the 3G network right now (unlike the 4G), but he's sure that soon there probably will be.
He could not use my phone as an example case (to raise the trouble ticket) because I was unwilling to perform the last step in the troubleshooting process (reflashing the phone) - but I'm sure there will be others willing to do that and this will become a known issue soon enough.
Worst part is, even my 1X support keeps going in and out - probably because the 1X network in NYC is overloaded, because all those users usually on 3G are all on 1X now, and killing it

This is definitely a widespread issue... I am in Miami and I can't even gey 3G here... I am only getting 1X.. The weird thing is, my friend has a Thunderbolt too and she seems to ne getting 3G fine.... If anyone receives any worse from Verizon, please post ASAP!!!

no 2g to 3g?

As the subject says recently when i turn off 3g to use edge and then go to turn back it wont let me
The only way i can get back to 3g is to turn data off and on manually by hitting airplane mode

I have the same issue it takes a long time to get 3g, I'm with vodafone au so the network is horrible. This might be the issue that the phone can get the troubled network.

I have this issue. Only fix I've found is airplane mode/battery pull.
However, if the phone automatically switches down to edge (2g), it will usually switch back on its own.
Don't even get me started on the frequent complete data shut-downs though, and that's with what little there is of the signal present. Completely ruined Google Voice functionality.

Well IM on ATT in the northeast US. I upgraded my radio from XX to UCK and I think it solved the issue for the most. A lot of outages here tho after our storm (apparently only on ATT tho as USUAL since verizon and sprint seem to be fine. ATT blows!

[Q] Stuck on EDGE or GPRS

When I'm on data, my phone is stuck on EDGE or GPRS when it should go up to 3G or H+. I've tried restarting my phone, turning wifi on and off, turning data on and off and made sure my settings looked okay. Any help is appreciated!
Cataclysm 11/26, Franco r14, dalvik patch. And if it's relevant, I'm on Rogers wireless.
I'm not sure but doesn't Rogers use global frequency in which case you need the 821 model?
I've definitely had 3G and H+ on my N5 (abbreviations much?), but it just seems very inconsistent. It'll go from H+ to 3G, back to H+, then cut out completely, then sit on E or G for a while. Just trying to pinpoint the issue because it's getting annoying haha. Perhaps it's the frequency that's screwing it up but that's definitely not my area of expertise. I do have the D820 model if that's helpful.
I'm having exactly the same problem with Fido right now, I tried pretty much everything including
- flashing back the factory image
- tried every modems from the xda thread in the Nexus 5 Android Development section (currently my phone is on the D821 modem but it didn't change anything)
- changing my apn (but it was obvious that this was not the problem since the phone had a edge connection.
I'm really about to call Fido...
Still, I'm kinda glad to see that i'm not alone.

Well going back and forth between 3G and H is normal. It picks up H/H+ when receiving/transmitting and goes to 3G when idle to save power.

I called Fido, the technical support told me that they had something that was blocking me from 3G (but he didn't tell me what it was, he just told me that something was blocking me...) I had my beloved H+ back for maybe a whole minute and then it just switched back to Edge network.
All I wanted to know was if many customers have reported the problem or if I were alone...
Maybe if I'm lucky my phone will get back its 3G soon just like you.

I called back Fido and they tried different things like desactiving/activing back my line, "updating my line" and more without any success.
Then I called google and told them the problem. They will change my Nexus 5 for a brand new but at the same time I feel like it is a software issue and not an hardward one... Well, we'll see, I never had a problem like that with any other phone before and the Nexus 5 never had any problem with 3G before yesterday.
I haven't tried everything yet, maybe you could try :
If you are in a LTE area, can the Nexus 5 connect itself to this network? Nearest LTE area from where I live is like 40 minutes away, bit too far just for a test.
Try with a sim card from another company like Telus or Bell, is the phone connecting to the 3G network? (I though about this while calling Google..)

Thanks for the update mark1s. Definitely let me know if a new phone fixes anything, although I'm also thinking it's a software problem.
The problem could just be that there happens to be patches of low coverage in the areas we're testing this out, which seems unlikely in big cities. But testing at work seems to have this problem, but testing this at home I pick up 3G and H+ just fine. Odd..

Terrible signal!

So my phone has terrible signal now ever since I got home from college. I remember it was sorta spotty where I lived but never this bad... I have around 40% time without a signal! It's so bad I can't even text... My messages just don't send half the time. I got a new Sim card only a couple months ago so I feel like replacing that won't help.
I checked my mother's phone and she has the same prl version which is 15287.
Her mobile network type is is set to global and on the status page displays: cdma - even Rev. A, while mine on the same settings displays just LTE for the network type.
I keep bouncing back and forth between global and LTE/CDMA the past couple months, im just going to leave it at global and see if it gets better here... Any sure way to load all the defaults?
I feel like my phone is just getting too old, I've got my upgrade in August but do you guys have any suggestions on how to make my signal better? Also what is the default network type for Verizon I thought (was told in the past) it was LTE/CDMA but when I checked my mother's phone it was set to global?!

I've been having recent issues in my area too. Seems to have started when my PRL was updated (15310) or potentially it is my sim (which I also replaced recently).
In any case, this is what I did to try and resolve it

It now switches correctly to 3G when there is a 4G signal. However, you SMS messages should send regardless of whether or not you have a 3 or 4G signal. MMS will be an issue though. As far as whether it is on Global or LTE, it won't make a difference in reception. You'll have better battery life on LTE/CDMA than on global as there is no need to have the GSM radios active if you aren't using them.

Hmmm thanks for the information! It seems like that could be what is happening to me. But weird enough typing *#97328640# in the dialer doesn't work?! It just says call could not be completed!
I hope this problem doesn't carry over when I get a new Sim / phone.
Also is disabling -eHRPD a wise thing to do? Also I left my phone on global and it moves to -eHRPD and I have good signal but my texts still arent sending for some reason but then it switches to CDMA 1xRTT and thats when im able to send texts but constanlty switches to Unknown/ no service and then after no serviece for a but back to -eHRPD?

Shield LTE on T-Mobile issue.

Just got my Shield LTE today. This is my first tablet ever as well as my first unlocked device ever so I've never really had to mess with APN settings before. Long story short, I can connect and get HSPA+ ok but the speeds suck and no LTE at all. My Galaxy S5 can pick up LTE fine and get around 50Mbps down, but the Shield gets only about 5 down on HSPA+. When I search for network operators, my only choices are T-Mobile (2G/3G) and AT&T (2G/3G/4G). Any ideas as to why it can't find T-Mobile LTE network?
Does your phone work with LTE in the same spot? I got my tablet yesterday and moved the TMO SIM from by iPad to the Shield. Got LTE right away without doing anything with APNs. Depending on where you are, TMO LTE coverage is spotty.
Yes. My Galaxy S5 gets about 3 bars on LTE while sitting right next to my tablet that only has 2 bars on 3G. Just got off the phone with T-Mobile and they said they could see me connect to the LTE network and I did see LTE come up on the Shield for a moment but then it almost immediately dropped back HSPA+. I think its an issue with the tablet itself. I'm on hold with Nvidia now.
I'm still trying to get my Shield LTE activated on T-Mobile for the 200 MB free data for life deal. T-Mobile told me that their system saw the Shield's IMEI as a phone, not a tablet, and to bring it into a store so they can see that it is indeed a tablet.
The APN Settings came down by default for me and appeared correct with what I've searched online, but I'm having the same issue where I'm not getting LTE here in the PHX market, in all the places my phone gets full healthy LTE.
I don't want to complain about my H+ signal, but it's just not cutting the mustard if you will.

I'm seeing the same issue With LTE/Tmobile alsnly HSPA+
I've been in contact with Nvidia support since last week and they have had me send them numorous diagnostic files and bug reports. From what I can tell, the Shield is using NVIDIA
's Icera i500 modem which can be thoroughly tweaked through software updates. I'm hoping this issue can be resolved with such an update. Nvidia level 2 support told me that I was the first case of this reported, so I urge everyone suffering from this issue to contact support so they can see that the problem is not an isolated incident. I'm hoping to hear back from them today regarding this. I will update the thread when I do.
T-Mobile setup my imei number as an iPad to activate sim and didn't give me the pin, called T-Mobile and got it fixed, the pin turned out to be 1234, once he fixed the imei and changed pin, internet started working well and LTE is working as well. Also logged into T-Mobile.com/connectme I'm not sure if that's required but that's where you can buy more data. Hope that helps someone
Hi there, T-Mobile retail dealer here. I've tried 4 different T-Mobile sim cards (2 $50 simple choice plans, 2 $70 simple choice plans) along with 4 of their MVNO's sim cards (Univision Mobile, Straight Talk, Ultra Mobile, Lyca Mobile) and they all had LTE.
With all of the T-Mobile sim cards, the standard APN that's loaded in (fast.t-mobile.com) works perfectly for me.
For the MVNOs, using their respective APNs allowed for LTE, while using "fast.t-mobile.com" on those services only gave me HSPA+
I'm also located right outside of Philadelphia. Not really a populous area but we have good coverage with T-Mobile around here.

Without that it was flipping between 3g and h+ constantly and connection was unstable. ive been streaming music and it did change back to 3g, but not back and fourth like before, ill keep an eye on it.
maybe i spoke to soon, i still see it switching. Ill update after some more testing if this did anything or not for me.

Not really, guess it was a placebo effect at first and just happened to stay on h+ for a while. from what i have read over the last few days is that on t-mobile's network it switches to 3g to save battery. I just removed the line i added, streaming music right now and just got a drop out. If someone knows or comes up with a way to force it on h+ I would happy, i could care less about battery savings if i just have this thing on my desk plugged in all day.
I got some time today, going to try staying off of wifi all day and see how it acts, might try a couple things if i can find some other options to test. if i find something ill let ya know.

Thanks for the response. I ended up exchanging mine with a new one that I just received last night. Right now I'm still testing and hopeful it will shape up, mine would drop from H+ to Edge, I do get LTE from time to time but it's very sparse. So far the replacement is doing well but i'm more and more convinced this is a radio issue as the tablet was really certified on AT&T. I've filed a ticket on my old one with Nvidia, no eta on a fix. Anyone that's seeing this go through nvidia support and file a ticket. Hopefully they can get it fixed in the next OTA.
I, too, only get H+ signal from TMO on my Shield. While it's normally fast, it sometimes drops and goes to E(DGE) or none at all.
EDIT: TMO could find nothing on their end via online chat. I'm going to test the SIM in another LTE device, and see if its a SIM issue. Waiting to hear back from NVIDIA. Really hoping our coming-soon 5.0 update fixes this!
EDIT 2: I just heard back from them that the TMO issue is an open bug "and will be fixed in a future update".
shield vs lte?
Yours at least connects, mine wont even do that I probably go to local branch again tomorrow if things wont change by the morning. I hope it works, but i cant activate the sim. Shield recognizes the card, under connections it says T-mobile but every time i turn off WiFi and try to activate the sim via cellular data, it keep telling me theres no connection yet i have 2 bars of their signal
So this means that I could but the 30 dollar a month plan? 5GB data, 100 minutes and unlimited texts?
Did anyone that was having a problem with LTE ever get it resolved? I just picked up the LTE version of the Shield tablet and have yet to see LTE and my phone is getting it fine. I hope a solution was found.

Yep, I'd be interested as well. I got that tablet since a few months and have problems with the radio too. I'm running LingeageOS 14.1. The latest few builds didn't even find the sim card anymore. Today I got back to stock rom for testing. Sim card is there, but it loses the radio connection every few seconds.

I just tried T-Mobile: works like a charm. It seems like Vodafone is causing the trouble. I've tried two different SIM cards and have the problem with both. Country: Germany.

What LTE band is your phone connecting to? I'm assuming you are T-Mobile? If you're in a band 12 area you might be out of luch as the North American version supports bands 2, 4, 5, 17, 7.
