Is Moto Turbo still worth buying? (Oct.16) - Moto Maxx Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone, should i buy this phone considering it is around 2 years old (will cost around 200$). I'm currently using oneplus one. Though my current phone is doing fine, i just wish it had better camera. How's the camera quality on turbo?
The development seems to be adequate for turbo.
Only thing i want is good battery life & better camera.
Thanks.

I purchased a used one for about $160 a couple of months back in pristine condition. Not to forget, you'll have to spend another $25 to unlock bootloader in case if you care about custom roms. Although Marshmallow upgrade offered by Moto is also a solid release with almost no bloatware.
I find the camera more than satisfying and battery lasts for about 1.5~2 days with moderate usage. I don't generally go into battery stats because I charge it for about an hour before leaving for work in the morning as routine. I remember that I noted Screen On Time to be 7+ hours on Resurrection Remix...
PS: I believe that Moto Maxx comes with unlocked bootloader while Droid Turbo is with locked bootloader. The sunshine exploit is only good for build SU4TL-44 - take care of this before purchase.
I would highly recommend this phone to anyone!

I just read in the other thread that build SU4TL-49 can also be unlocked using sunshine - read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-turbo/general/sunshine-bootloader-unlock-su4tl-49-t3445523

I'm from India. LTE bands required are 3, 5 & 40. As it is a single sim device, i may not use 4g unless VOLTE is available on this mobile . please advice.
Does the Indian version also require payment to unlock bootloader?
Please also advice regarding camera picture quality.

No, he means Moto Turbo XT1225. That's the India-specific Quark. The Droid Turbo XT1254 is the U.S. Verizon model with CDMA/GSM/HSPA/LTE.
You will NOT get LTE band 5 on the Droid Turbo XT1254, but you WILL get LTE band 5 on the Moto Turbo XT1225.
The XT1225 was sold under the Moto Maxx name in Latin America, but sold as the Moto Turbo in India. It's the same phone. I bought three Moto XT1225 phones from Latin America countries but flashed TWO of them to Moto Turbo firmware, because the Moto Turbo XT1225 was released with Lollipop in March 2015 before the other Quarks got Lollipop upgrade from Kitkat.
The XT1250 is the U.S. Moto Maxx and is identical to the XT1254 Verizon Droid Turbo. So, when discussing the Quarks it helps to mention model number, not just the "name".
The XT1225 and XT1254/XT1250 all share LTE bands 2, 3, 4, 7.

The XT1225 has a different FCC ID from the XT1250/XT1254 because it has no CDMA bands, has MORE HSPA bands, slightly different mix of LTE bands. The XT1225 additionally has LTE band 5 and 17 (more bands used by AT&T here in the U.S. -- which makes is perfect for me).
The XT1254/XT1250 instead has LTE band 13 (Verizon LTE band), plus CDMA bands. While it does have some HSPA bands, there's not as many as in the XT1225.
Motorola told the FCC they both share the same hardware, which include antennas. See Motorola letter to FCC below.
Motorola had to submit the XT1225 to the FCC because it was being sold in Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory.
XT1254 is identical in every way XT1250. Same FCC ID, same CDMA/HSPA/LTE bands, same everything except Verizon bloatware and carrier-locked bootloader. The U.S Moto Maxx XT1250 is basically the "dev" version of the XT1254 Droid Turbo. EXACT same device.

No, the XT1225 (all of them) has free bootloader unlock via code from Motorola website.
Also the XT1250 has free bootloader unlock via code from Motorola website.
Of the Quark series, only the Verizon Droid Turbo XT1254 has locked down bootloader because Verizon DEMANDED it from Motorola. So, for that one you have to pay $25 for Sunshine exploit to force unlock the bootloader.

You will get LTE bands 3 & 5 on the XT1225. You will not get LTE band 40. So, two of the three LTE bands, yes.
However, apparently India VoLTE does not work on the India Moto Turbo XT1225, even though it should. VoLTE works on other Quarks and India VoLTE works on other Motorola phones.

I'm running a custom ROM, but I re-flashed the Motorola camera apk for this phone and it's fine. Here's my cat. She loves every box she sees.
Having said that, I just upgraded to Resurrection Remix Marshmallow a couple of days ago and just flashed the new camera for the Moto G4. It seems to have some improvements over the XT1225 camera, but I only flashed it today so I can't make a lot of judgements yet.

It's possible. It was uploaded to Photobucket, so I don't know what their algorithms do. I just don't want to post pictures of my wife or my house. Most other pictures I take are of tech stuff at work to document issues.
But you can go by what the other guy said about the camera.

Here's a professional YouTube review of the camera:
Motorola Droid Turbo Camera Review (2:23) (yeah, says Droid Turbo, but SAME camera as the Moto Turbo).

Here are few pics to give you the idea: https://goo.gl/photos/PQtz9Fni6PApBk3J7
These are of course compressed to google's unlimited storage specs. For instance, the photo "IMG_20160802_143143183.jpg" is 2.8MB on google photos after compression, the original is 4.99MB.

Hi, photos seem to have good enough details. Why are these 15.5mp & not 21mp?
How's the battery life?
Sent from my A0001 using XDA-Developers mobile app

There's an option in the camera for Widescreen 15.5MP (16:9) and Standard 21 MP (4:3). I've opted for Widescreen.
I've already commented about battery life in my previous posts.

Motorola Droid 5

http://pocketnow.com/2013/08/24/motorola-droid-5-leaked
It seems that we finally have news when it comes to QWERTY phones. Although it is only being compared to the predecessor, the Droid 4, I guess it will top some of the Photon Q LTE specs. And just look at the battery...it looks massive! I bet it's more than 2000 mAh this time!
Hopefully there's more news in the future...so if anyone sees something, post it here!
Sweetness.
Will probably be Verizon only... oh well. At least there is something on the horizon for QWERTY sliders.
I dunno, in this case I'd hold out some hope given the P-Q was in essence a Droid 4.5 of sorts.
Please have a look at the attached picture. I found this on a Chinese site...the guy's in the settings menu where you see the "about phone". As Model Number there it says: Droid RAZR HD. Could this mean we look at similar specs??? 4,7 inch, 720p, would be sweet...and it's also supposed to be smaller than the former Droids...!
Nah it's just the Razr HD firmware on it (or some modification). It also has ICS firmware. I'd say it's 4.3 or 4.5 inch, not bigger - it's a good size for QWERTY phone.
I'm so happy seeing this. I thought it was cancelled before. If it's released,I will buy it. Hopefully,it's a global phone.
I'd also give it a 4,5" screen. It's the same keyboard as on XT894/XT897. But in comparison the screen seems to be approx. 2mm higher and approx. 4mm wider. So the biggest it can be is 4,5". Me personally would welcome a 4,5" 720p non-RGB-textile screen. Nonetheless I'd skip the Droid 5 when the hardware isn't much better , and I do mean MUCH better, than the XT897. Especially since Verizon phones only support LTE @ 700MHz which is useless outside the States.
Sprint's LTE is also uselss outside states. I think the hope is more for EU version of Droid 5, where the last official QWERTY phone is Motorola Milestone 2 or Sony Xperia Pro. Also this isn't cancelled XT898, that was identical to Photon Q (for AT&T and international).
I'd say Droid 5 will be same platform as Moto X / Moto Droid Ultra.
Yeah I think you`re right on that one. Still, at this moment not worth the upgrade for me. Selling one of XT925/XT894 with an 1.5GHz Krait / Adreno 225 and paying probably a whooooole lotta money for an 1.7 GHz Krait / Adreno 320. Maybe after a year or so when they start popping up on Swappa/Ebay for reasonable prices
its must be the photon q,they are same!
Why take the phone that way? It's a fake!
i believe it has sim slot at right side..

Yessss....
but here will be big problem with unlock it.
from verizon can be unlocked approx 60% of droids (d2g/d3/d4)...on remaining 40% phone say "unlock request unsucessfull".
...and now - with the new USA cellphone unlock law it will be much harder or impossible
Well, the Razr HD / Photon Q family phones can be unlocked with extreme ease + there was no lock on non-US carriers at all
I hope the display is not bigger than 4.3". For me my Photon is a bit too big. If the phone is real....
The Chinese e-bay (taobao) is full with pre-production, demo and what not samples of goods. I have bought Moto XT560 with "not for sale" etched on its bezel and Intel ES CPU which don't have a model number and is combination between two Intel tiers :silly:
So I hope this is really a product under development and not a cancelled prototype.
Well, the ICS on it is weird.
I hope it's a global phone. Don't care if it's only on Verizon or Sprint. Razr HD and Razr M are vzw phones. But,it's easily unlockable.

Sigh... the policies in my country are frustrating at times. Sprint will only activate ESN's from their database... so "unlocking" a Razr M for Sprint would not work, for example.

That sounds bad. Seems like getting tied with a certain carrier. If you unlock your phone and use it with a prepaid carrier like pageplus, will you get blocked or it ended up with a bad ESN?

Unfortunately the name "Droid" is a trademark of Lucas Films and Verizon (not Motorola) has purchased the right to use the Droid name. So you you will never see a phone named "Droid" anything on any carrier except Verizon. IMO that's why even though the Moto X fits right in the line with the Mini, Ultra, and Maxx, it didn't get the Droid name allowing it to be used on other carriers.

Right but lots of times Motorola will release something similar on other carriers. Like the Atrix. Doesn't necessarily need to be called "droid mini" or look identical but I wish there was an att equivalent!

Amazingly, they do flash. I just flashed NON-HLOS.bin, then ran "erase modemst1" and "erase modemst2" and then flashed fsg.mbn. My radio now shows as the same radio on my AT&T Moto X. I then added the "phone" APN.
Very disappointed to report that I'm still not getting LTE on the mini on AT&T.
Too bad. Worth a try. Would have been awesome if it had worked, but I guess it just doesn't have the correct bands, even with the AT&T radio flashed. If anybody else has any ideas, would love to hear them.
You will get LTE in areas that have band 4 active. I have it some places and others not.
The at&t bands are different then Verizon. And as the mini/ultra/maxx was made exclusive for Verizon....... You may never have luck. Sorry about that. If I had better news for you I would let u know. Even with a locked boot loader, you can still flash a lot of things

Yeah that's definitely an international (or possibly just BR) version of the DROID Turbo!
Well, I am almost certain that this is an international version of Droid Turbo:
1 - Recently Anatel (the equivalent of the FCC here in Brazil) approved a smartphone with model number XT1225
2- Some Brazilian websites are stating that they were invited to an event on November 5th. If you look at the attached picture you'll see the back of a device which looks like the Droid Turbo.
3- The same website I took this picture from is stating that the smartphone will probably be called Moto Maxx because we once had a Razr Maxx which was just a rebranded version of the Droid Maxx from Verizon.
4- Knowing the market here in Brazil, I will be EXTREMELY surprised if I see the exact model you showed being sold here because it has 64gb of storage. For us, the only device that has this option right now, is the iPhone.
BTW, you just made my day! I was really hoping the Droid Turbo would come to Brazil and practically confirmed it! Thumbs up for that!

The S6 is Exynos and does CDMA, as does the Exynos Note 5. Likewise, Qualcomm does CDMA and GSM. CDMA/GSM has nothing to do with it. For the purposes of carrier unlocked phones, it doesn't matter. These SoCs can do either one.

We're not talking about the S6 or Note5. The Exynos versions of the S7/S7E don't work on CDMA networks. I'd be happy to be proven wrong if you know of someone using a G930F(D)/G935F(D) on Verizon.

Basically my interest here stems from my belief that the note 7 will be in the same exact boat as the s7/e devices, but honestly I'd prefer the exynos anyway, that 8893 with a T880 should be a beast! Plus i love exynos is way more efficient than the QC SoC...at this point, as long as they release an intl bootloader unlocked version (N935F?) I'll be fine with it...

You're correct, for some reason (probably cost saving) Samsung omitted CDMA support for its Exynos 8890 SoC this year. Apologies. I thought the capability was there but locked out for the US market. I also thought there was a Korean CDMA version of the Exynos, I was wrong.

That's a real stand-up post my friend many folks refuse to admit when they're wrong, so this is quite refreshing!

Yea the exynos based phones seem superior. Qualcomm lost me a couple devices ago, once i used a exynos device I knew I shouldn't go back to a qualcomm chipped samsung, Never again

I may be late to the party for this one... But from what I'm gathering the s7 edge from tmobile will work for verizon if it's unlocked? I have the option to get a tmobile one but I'm trying to figure out if it'll work with verizon..
Thanks

I wouldn't see why not, i have a tmobile variant and it's perfectly capable of connecting to cdma towers, the radios are there...add a sim and you should be good...of course it must be carrier unlocked...

Indians do it better?

I begin to think that there should be some misunderstanding between Motorola 's US team and the Chinese people of Lenovo...
Someone @motorola would have said something like "with MotoZ we want to do something special for Indians!".
They obviously intended their "American natives", BUT on Lenovo they made the same error of Columbus and did it for Indians of India!
Why am I saying this?
Are facts to tell...
- Moto Z in Europe: available only in few countries, very few to none advertising for it, only single SIM version, only 32 GB version, only some LTE bands supported, quite more expensive than in US, expecially on Amazon...
- Moto Z in India: a big event on Amazon.in for the oncoming launch in all India, only DUAL SIM version, only 64 GB version, the largest list of LTE bands supported (with Europeans only too, like B20...), a price which is a fraction of European one and lower than US one (of 32 GB single SIM...) too...
Some years ago Madonna singer during a concert used a T-shirt with "Italians do it better" written on it, making it famous... @lenovo do they use to wear "Indians do it better" T-shirts?
Or do they think in Europe we are all strange & exotic people wearing rings on our noses? :cyclops:
Not only Indians... here in Mexico the free versions are the same, 64GB, double sim ready, unlock bootloader ready, carrier free and almost all include the moto mods bundle: bumper, incipio battery, moto case and JBL speakers. I bought mine in Amazon, but also if you buy yours on Motorola site, Best Buy or even WalMart you get the same. BTW the model is the 03 version.

Interesting...
Motorola's national web sites shouldn't ship out of country, but perhaps Best Buy or Walmart... Do you have any links to some bundles to provide to me?
EDIT: seen the bundles... very nice and very nice prices, BUT nor Motorola.com.mx, neither Amazon.com.mx & bestbuy.com.mx ships outside Mexico that product..!
-03 should be all single SIM... What do you mean with "double SIM ready"?!
Could you test by apps like Signal spy or similar what LTE bands are supported by your model?
Thanx a lot!
Is Reliance Jio VoLTE supported in Moto Z?

Have you personally tested with two SIM installed? Since on Motorola.mx it's not reported to be dual SIM (even if the tray probably is...).
About LTE bands, I've opened a specific topic... anyway they should be reported in bottom side of box, near IMEI and model number...

Thanx a lot... This is very interesting since Motorola declare double SIM available only in China, Brazil & India.
I've found that even French version is double SIM and now Mexicans too...
When you look @ the box for LTE bands, please check if there is reported one or two IMEI numbers and the exact model version (something like SMxxxxAE7xx for black version or SMxxxxAD1xx for white one...)

My box doesn't show the bands that are supported, also you can check that is double sim ready. I bought mine in Mexico Amazon, is exactly the same that Motorola is selling here. Hope this is helpful.

A lot! Thank you! I will add your mod data to my model thread...
Lol that's so wrong. I live in Norway, and my Moto Z is Dual SIM and supports a large range of LTE (not that Norway is using LTE very practically, Norway is still FAR behind when it comes to LTE/4G usage and spread)-.
