Lost all my contacts?

I installed a new ROM and the contacts i had on my phone are all gone. I have a G1. The contacts i had on my google account are still there, but the ones i added the past 6 months on my phone manually are gone. I saved my entire SD card to a folder on my desktop. I cant find them on there. Is there anyway I can recover my contacts? Its not on the SIM card either.

Losing contacts after flashing to a new ROM ? Of course this happens, that is why one should use the free PIM Backup application.

And no, you can not retrieve them in any way! There is no UNFLASH / UNFORMAT / UNDELETE on WM / WP, yet.

How about recovery? I think i backed up my phone at reboot menu earlier. I have recovery.img

[Q] Motorola Droid Ultra erased...photo recovery possible?

Motorola Droid Ultra Erased....HELP. Thanks to anyone out there who even takes the time to read or reply. I get that my issue is probably petty in this forum but I just want a simple answer of move on it is impossible or you can try this. I am a complete newbie so pardon my lack of knowledge on the topic.
I had my phone locked with a pin. My darling six year old entered the pin however many times it take for it to magically start erasing itself. (BTW this is the second time this has happened and I thought I had safe guarded it from happening again.) I don't care about anything but the photos that I lost. Is there anyway to recover the photos or should I just move on and forget? I have not been using it hoping that there was a way to root the phone and recover something but upon reading lots and lots of things I think I am screwed because my phone is version 4.4.4. Can someone confirm or deny.

You can try to retrieve your photos using a data recovery program. Search Google for get data back or just do a general search for USB data recovery

I tried that but because the phone is not recognized as a drive on computers there is no way to access the files for data recovery. Even programs that say they can to end up failing and the phone needs to be rooted.

No. I tried to recover the files immediately after it happened. And found out about the USB Mass Storage no longer being an option in Android 4.0 phones thus causing issues for recovery. Everything I read then said the phone would need to be rooted but I am running version 4.4.4 and everything I have seen has said thus far it has not been done.

Can't you just boot the phone up and use it ad a USB device in android. You can clearly see your downloaded files and such without being rooted

I am not following what you are saying. The files were deleted so nothing shows. I need to use a recovery program to gain access to the deleted files but cannot get to them without being able to access the phone as a USB storage device...not a camera or device which is all that is able to be done with MTP/PTP.

unless you backed them up somewhere that's not on your phone then i don't think you can recover them

Yes nothing shows but you want to recover deleted data from your phone. The only way is to mount the phone. So you can mount the phone in android when you transfer music and pictures from computer and phone it shows up as a drive in my computer. You can use data recovery software and run it on that drive. You don't need root since your pictures were not stored in the root of the device

i faced a similar situation and was not able to recover any photos. i tried a bunch of different methods and programs. i thought the most promising was an android app, that runs on the phone was diskdigger, but it didnt render any results.

2. and then rooting (which means factory reset?)
If there is a theoretic way to recover it from the bits, is there a way to take a snapshot of the current state of the bit, so I can (in theory) recover the media in the future?

First of all I know I'm very stupid..
Yesterday I've deleted my /storage folder since in first glance it looked empty.
Then I figured out what did I do, so I tried to recover the information.
I've searched the web for an application that does that and I found one that required rooting the phone, so I rooted the phone which means I made factory reset.
Then I tried to recover but it didn't manage to recover the photos and videos.. (it did recover whatsapp photos and some other things but not from the dcim folder).
I tried then several different applications that may not ask for rooting the phone so maybe I made a mistake by doing that (not sure that they wouldn't request for rooting either) but no success with that...
I'm willing to pay money to save that data but do you think it's not recoverable anymore?
I also called the 3 biggest recovery companies in my country, 2 of them told me that they don't think it's possible and one agreed to take it to their labs for a small price and then give me an offer.

After few weeks of working on that, I didn't make it to recover any of my photos/videos/whatsapp chat history (the things that were most important to me)
I tried several stuff, apperently all of the recovery programs that using the adb to directly connect to the phone through the PC doesn't work well enough, as well as the programs that works from the device...

I used a centos VM to get a image of the device partiotns the way they suggested (I couldn't make the busybox work).
I mapped that file as hard disk
I tried to use 'Recuva' it seems like it managed to restore files but something apperantly went wrong and the files wasn't helpful...
I tried to use 'easeus data recovery' it worked better, it found around 20k files.. There were alot of directories and I didn't look up at it so much but it recoverd alot of photos which I think were from the whatsapp media.
Incase someone who made the same mistake by deleting the 'storage' folder, get to this post, I recommend to turn off the phone immidietly and find a way to do that without rooting the device.. (although it might be impossible since as far as I know all of the methods I used were depends on a rooted device, but I didn't look up on this since the first thing I done is to root my device - which might be the mistake)...

SUCCESS : ROOT + Encryption.

I want to share my experiences about having ROOT + Encryption. This case of mine may pose as example for anyone who want to root their phones while want to have their device encrypted at the same time.
My phone is Samsung Note 3, Stock Lollipop 5.0, rooted with KingRoot 4.85 (kingroot.net). I think you can also have your phones to be rooted regardless of rooting mechanism. I picked KingRoot because it was the one successfully rooted my device without installing any custom recoveries, which is really IMPORTANT if we want to apply device encryption..:fingers-crossed:

On my case, my Note 3 was not encrypted (also have unencrypted external 32GB MicroSD), then I rooted it successully via exploit. I then started device encryption without any problems. I also have frozen Knox and many other Samsung bloatwares before started the encryption.
The conclusion is, as long as your rooting process didnt involve custom recoveries then you are good to go with device encryption, whether root first later encrypt or encrypt first then root later.
I am not expert and hoping this small info can help other non experts who want to taste rooting privileges while preserving device encryption.

I am using CM12.1 (Android 5.1.1) custom ROM, IdleKernel 7.1.0 custom kernel, TWRP 3.0.2 custom recovery and my encryption works just fine.

What's performance like with encryption?

I haven't noticed any difference with my day-to-day usage.

very interesting thread. I rooted as well my S7 but installed TWRP - so the bootloader is unlocked and it seems, that an encryption doesnt make much sense.
If I got you right, an installation of a cfw with the described procedure isnt possible.
Is there a way, if you have already installed a custom recovery to get a S7 encrypted and rooted?

Today I tried 3 different strategies for getting my phone encrypted - none of them worked
Each time the phone reboots within 2-3 minutes and nothing gets encrypted. @tefole - I was only successful with the ROM of the polish guy (artas...), his ROM is excellent, but I can't see the SD card when I connect the phone to my laptop, so it's again a NO-GO

Till now, i were also not able to get it run.
In other threads i see people, which were successfull - with restrictions.
I am shocked a bit, why this "encryption on rooted phones" topic is not treated very much, because you dont get much information.
It seems, or this means that most of the guys are dont care with their data, if they lost their phone.
Imagine, you lose phone or get it stolen and you dont figure it out immediately:
whatsapp/threema chat history and the corresponding meda (in my case: 5 years old)
contacts
all emails!
photos / DCIM
social media account: instagram, twitter, etc..
google drive
downloads and documents
connection to my homenetwork (openvpn)
An encrypted phone is a important but imho is rooting a must-have too, to get your phone debloated and for using xposed, adaway, xprivacy, etc...
I guess, a conflict of interests.

Yes, I am very worried about the situation you describe, and I don't even have half of the things you describe! And I'm so glad that you are using Threema. I couldn't convince any of my friends to install it - they use WhatsApp and Viber and when I mention privacy, they always keep saying - I have no secrets, I have nothing to hide and nothing to be afraid of. No comment...
And about encryption - the funny thing is, that I couldn't encrypt it with the stock ROM, this is why I rooted it - to be able to install a custom ROM. and now it's such a hassle to get it encrypted when it's been rooted! What an irony!
So I think that the only option for me is to use the Artas ROM, as it can encrypt the phone itself. But with it, I don't see the SD card when I connect the phone to my laptop - it means that I can copy a lot of data only to the phone and will then need to move it to the SD card - quite uncomfortable.
And also it's not possible to encrypt the SD card - but let's say, I'll put only mp3s and movies on it, so nothing really secret. Then another possibility is to return the phone and get another one, but I don't really have an alternative - maybe LG G4, but I think that the Note is much sweeter...
Or get an iPhone out of frustration

Hello, sorry for late replies on my thread as if my replies would even help though.
I still have the Galaxy Note 3 (Rooted) with Stock 5.0 Lollipop as described on this post. Please be reminded I was not using any custom recoveries.
Recently this phone came into this situation :
Previously working external 32 GB Samsung Evo Micro-SD is no longer capable to be used in encrypted form. First I though failed cards but then tried with other cards came with same problems, they all can be used in "unencrypted form".. so weird. If I try to encrypt it it says "Unable To Mount SD Card" which is weird since it can be mounted and used properly while in unencrypted form. This situation happened while internal device still in encrypted form. I then tried to decrypt all of them, both external and internal storage, weirdly it is succeed. At this point then my device really naked, non of storages are in encrypted form.
I then tried again to encrypt my internal storage (device encryption) with external SD card detached from device, with more than 10 failed trials resulted only as regular restarts then at 11th or so trials it then came into proper reboot and properly start encrypting my device (external storage was detached before process).
Right now the device is only have internal storage encrypted with external storage UN-encrypted. Maybe some days in future I will try again to re-encrypt the external sd card but so far internal storage encypted is enough while stays rooted. For anyone of you outthere who face regular restart without result when trying to encrypt via settings, dont give up! They tend to do stupid restarts but at some point they will sober and do proper encryption process. I was successfull re-encrypting internal storage after 11th or so reboots. Going with some cool drinks and listen to jazzy music before doing encyption helped much to the soul.

I had on my Samsung phone the app of "Chrome", which I always use to surf the internet. Using the google browser IN THAT APP, I have downloaded lots of things (I'm a scholar, so I like to read and I use to download everything that I found interesting). I have updated the app and I was frustrated, because I couldn't take anymore screenshots while surfing in "incognito mode". So, I decided to delete the update: i went into "settings", then "apps", and then I have brought back the app of "Chrome" as it was when i bought my phone. Sadly, I then noticed that I had lost every file in my download folder; I had lost every file downloaded with that app.
I had not synchronized my Google account, I can do no backup. I'm so angry and sad because I've always thought that the files downloaded would have stayed in my phone until I and only I would have decide to delete them.
I have done a lot of research on the internet and I have found out that there are some apps that can recover a very large part of lost files. But, in order to do this, I have to root my phone.
My phone is a Samsung Galaxy J2 SM-J250Y/DS, and the Android version is 7.1.1. I have seen that rooting a phone could be very dangerous; also, to me is very complicated. But there is a program called Kingoroot, which, once installed on my computer, could (it's a possibility, I know!) rooting my phone easily.
What should I do? Should I try the rooting method? It seems to me the only way...
I ask you any suggestions... Please help me. I am a depressed student that, in this life, can only enjoy reading and books...

Sorry can't help you get what you lost back... I feel your pain.
After losing thousands of bookmarks over the decades I started using Colornotes to save my important bookmarks.
You can save the hyperlink with a title, color, and whatever text you want to add. If you punch the hyperlink it opens in the default browser.
The app allows you to save it's data to your sd card which you can backup on your PC.
Use ApkExport to make a loadable copy of the app to future proof it.

It sounds like it deleted the data when you rolled the apk back (to factory load?).
If so it's going to be very sketchy at best to recover them.
I guess history's been deleted as well?
There are many coders here that have far greater knowledge than myself with Chrome.
My understanding of rooting is very basic as with Chrome which I rarely use.
If no one else replies in a day or two, bump it back to the top. Hope you find a work around solution.

Rooting Android by means of TWRP and/or Magisk ( keyword: SuperSU ) affects its /data partition where phone's data typically are housed. Therefore it cannot be excluded that data stored there is overwritten and can therefore no longer be restored.

Is there the possibility if deleted that it's still on the system cache and is there a way to recover it if so on a none rooted phone?
Maybe using ABD?
Don't some on the "one touch" root solutions claim to preserve the data?

Android doesn't have a recycle bin thus nothing gets cached. Deleting a file means nothing else than marking the space it occupies - whereever this disk space is located - as usable so that it can be overwritten by the system.
Have never used a "One-Click-Root" utility ...

Yes, it's just like I told. And yes, even history has been deleted.

Yeah I was aware of the overwrite issue but on an unrooted device I don't think you can access the system cache. Even if you could the data could be so juxtaposed from lose of file structure as to be unusable.
One-Click-Root worked on older versions of Kitkat allegedly.

So... I understand. But I want to try. I want to root my phone. But I have to know how and I must prevent my phone from all the risks.

You can try it; it will either work or nothing will happen. Even if it works it's likely those files are gone. Maybe better to chalk it up to another lesson from the University of Hard Knocks.
You could try contacting Google tech support to see if they have any ideas.
The last AT&T firmware update was specifically to block easy rooting by Kingroot; the rats learn quick.

Hi, I would suggest you can try free tool for Android Phone such as Stellar Data Recovery for Android which easily recover deleted files like, photos, audio files, videos files from your Android phone internal memory storage.

That drfone again. Scamware.
Do Not Use.
Drfone if used will encrypt "recovered" data and ask you to pay for it. After which the original data is gone leaving only the encrypted copy.
It is not free... not to be trusted!
Ran into this scam many years ago.
