Lost all my contacts? - General Questions and Answers

I installed a new ROM and the contacts i had on my phone are all gone. I have a G1. The contacts i had on my google account are still there, but the ones i added the past 6 months on my phone manually are gone. I saved my entire SD card to a folder on my desktop. I cant find them on there. Is there anyway I can recover my contacts? Its not on the SIM card either.

Losing contacts after flashing to a new ROM ? Of course this happens, that is why one should use the free PIM Backup application.
Sorry to inform you about this..
And no, you can not retrieve them in any way! There is no UNFLASH / UNFORMAT / UNDELETE on WM / WP, yet.

How about recovery? I think i backed up my phone at reboot menu earlier. I have recovery.img

try it!
Try it! Though do not expect miracles.. I know I never did, because I do not have an utility which enables me to 'browse' such an image, let alone 'change' it in any way
Anyway, maybe you have some luck? Some welcome luck
Please let us know if you have solved it.....

How to load all programs after hard reset?

Hello!
I will receive my Polaris in a couple of days And I will probably load some new programs into it.
My question is: after a hard reset it will be back to factory settings right?
How do you load the new programs again?
Do you load them one by one, or is there a kind of backupprogram that will load all the programs for you?
Thank you.
And this is a excellent forum

Of course you can use a backup program. The best are SPB Backup & Sprite Backup.
There are some backup programs, but they only store the contact/mail/calendar data... I'm not sure if there is any that backups the programs... the best way is to install everything on the memory card, and backup the shortcut files on the memory card. After the HR you only have to copy those back in the StartMenu folder
Som program dont work whithout registry entries or other installed components, so these won't work whith the method above.
The Activesync, and the Device Center has a list of installed/installable apps that will install those on user request (mass install), but that will still intall them 1 by 1....

If you're getting a sim free polaris, then, it comes with a free HTC back up software and a complimentary Sprite Back up software. You can use either of them. Install either one of them on the main memory but make sure you put your back up on your storage card.
Side note: Load APPLICATION software one at a time and observed the behaviour of your device for a day or so. If it's working according to your expectations then make a back up and install another one.
Thanks guys
And my Polaris comes sim free so hopefully the software I need is included in the package.

There have been complaints about the (old) version of Sprite Backup that is included in the CD of Polaris. I would suggest to install the latest version of Sprite Backup or SPB Backup.
The HTC backup tool is Sprite Backup 5.10 (P3650_BackupTool_5.1.0.b1450_HTC_WWE_20071102.exe)
And the included 'SpriteBackupEnglishPersonalSetup.exe' is the same as the HTC one, but it installs a PC suite aswell.

Sprite backup question-please help

Here is my situation:
I had a HTC Touch Pro T7272. A few days ago I lost this phone but ordered a new one.
I ordered the same phone, but it may have a different ROM/Radio version
For the phone I lost, I have a full backup, from 3 weeks ago. I also have the updated synced files from the day before I lost this phone. I had done a lot of tweaks and added many programs, so it would be best to restore the full backup to the new phone.
1. When the new TP arrives, should I load the Sprite backup (an .exe file) onto the new phone and run that?
2. Then sync to my desktop to get the latest file updates?
3. Do I have to load sprite backup onto the Touch Pro first? Or can I just load the backup file and double clip it to execute Restore?
4. I have .net 3.5 loaded on my desktop. Do I need to load this onto the TP BEFORE I do the Restore?
Any advice here would be greatly appreciated.

1- You can - although it's not necessary if the backup file you created is self-restoring.
2- Yes after you've run your backup.
3- No, see my #1
4- No, unless the last backup you have doesn't include it.
Thanks for your advise C. My head is still spinning from losing my phone.
If the restore somehow messes with the phone (let's say it's got a new ROM and slightly different registry), you can always then backup your PIM data with PIM backup 2.8, then do a hard reset and restore the PIM data. If you want to get fancier, you can look through your registry and find the settings that you'd like to keep, and export those reg keys to your sd card, then import them back after a hard reset.
Since the backup file is an .exe file, can I run it from the micro sd card in the phone, or does it have to be run from the desktop?
I am sorry to tell you but, after updating to the new ROM, I tried to restore a backup taken with the old ROM and I had major problems, one of them being that the screen would not rotate when sliding out the keyboard, so I ended up hard-resetting and reinstalling all applications one by one....
Wouldn't you be better off restoring using the same ROM (as used in the backup), THEN upgrading ROMs?
This reminds me though, I don't know which ROM I had in my lost phone. Therefore I might have to reload eveerything one by one...ERRRR
Hi,
I recently did that after upgrading the ROM. I can say it works, but I'm not sure, if there are any files from the new ROM that have been replaced by old versions. You'd probably be better off just restoring your PIM data only...
CU,
Cactus World
Now I am all messed up. Please help.
1. I just received my replacement TP phone. I loaded the backup .exe file onto it but it would not execute. Error message says missing a component.
How to I get sprite backup working again? It is on my desktop.
2. I need to load .net 3.5 onto this device. I can't remember where I got it from or how I loaded it. Can someone remind me. It is actuially already loaded on my desktop.
3. I need to reload the latest version of Google Maps. Does anyone have the link?
Thanks for the help. My head is about to explode trying to get this new phone back to the previous state.
Okay, I figured out 1 & 2.
Does anyone have a link to the newest Google maps?
Does anyone know the registry setting to remove an icon on the email tabs? After doing the restore, I have 2 icons that were linked to email accounts, that no longer work. How can I get rid of them?
My last phone had "Programs" in the bottom right hand corner of Today screen. This one has "Contacts" I prefer "Programs" Does anyone know how to fix this?
I apologize if I suck at describing some of these issues. I am still beating myself up for losing the phone.
http://www.google.com/gmm/GoogleMaps.CAB
And try this for fixing those orphaned accounts - worked for me:
http://nicolasmauri.blogspot.com/2007/01/wm5-utility-recover-your-lost-mail.html
hyachts, thanks for the help. this software from Nicolas Mauri might work, but I couldn't tell from his blog. You see I have 1 or 2 extra email icons that were left from a restore. Will this program get rid of those email icons? Also, it is in .rar format so I can't use on my comouters here. I have to try my office. Is there a .cab file in the .rar file?
One more request. Does anyone know how to add the "programs" choice instead of "contacts" on the home screen (lower right hand corner)

nexus s txt thread recovery?

Hello, I have a question I hope you can help me with...
I've got a nexus S 2.3 and Ive just deleted a very important text msg thread, have I lost it forever or is there anyway that I can recover it??
If I can recover it can you please tell me what I should do as I ve never done anything ike this before. Many thanks, concerned android user.
Never tried anything like this before, so just some ideas as a general outline:
The first thing you should do is a complete image of the phone before the data can be overwritten (if it isn't already).
There is no convenient way to undelete that I know of.
I would search for the sms database file and try some sqlite tools on it. Look if there are entries that are marked as deleted or something.
If that doesn't bring anything up, I would use a good (hex-)editor to extract the strings from the file and see, if the data is somehow still there.
Anyway it will probably mean a lot of work, depending on how many sms you have stored and the best you should hope for is that you can manually reconstruct the thread in a text file or on a piece of paper.
Hello cgi,
thanks for the reply with advice!!
what is a complete image? how do i do this?
how do i search the sms database?
where do i get hex editor from?
do i need to back up any data before trying to recover anything?
many thanks,
Ray

An image is a complete copy of the data on the phone. The easiest way to do that is to use a custom recovery system like clockworkmod recovery. If you have a custom ROM installed, chances are, that you already have it.
First: Is your bootloader locked or unlocked?
Second: Which version of Android exactly is one your phone?
If your bootloader is unlocked, you can install a recovery image that will let you backup the data partition where your sms database should reside.
If your bootloader is locked but your Android version is 2.3.3 or lower, you can use an exploit that let's install a different recovery image.
If your bootloader is locked and your Android version 2.3.4 (and your phone is not rooted), then AFAIK you are out of luck.

I don't know in which files your sms are being stored, but it should not be that hard to find out.

There are a lot out there. I use okteta from the KDE project, but you can use whichever you want. You could use notepad, too, i guess, but that won't make things any easier.

That's the image I was talking about. You would first copy all the data on your computer.
CGIi,
Many many thanks for taking the time to reply to my question!!
I dont think there is much chance of recovering this thread, my friend has about half of the 900 texts in the thread which makes it slighty easier to swalow.
once again the importance of backing things up is key to keeping the pics, files, texts you want to keep. I'l try to do this even more in the future, I'm so sick of losing data from old mobiles, PC'S etc, I'm gonna back up everything from now on!!
Many thanks again, RAY

Vienna calling with some problems ......

Dear all,
just registered and already huge difficulties and problems.
The story behind:
My memory-device (my brain) decided to cancel the "password-file" - so everything was lost. Not only the pattern for the phone, but all other numbers too (credit card, account numbers .......... was not very funny. Happend within 10 minutes. Nearly all important passwords are back now, but pattern still missing....)
As I could not remember the pattern, although I tried about thousand possibilities, I did a hard-reset.
As there are several programs out there in order to recover the phone-data and messages, I tried to get into the deep of Android - but failed.
Tried to root with several programs, but at about 75% they stopped and rooting failed.
I'm not very firm with root, boot and such things - so I would ask you to support me.
(I'm in urgent need of some of the data already .........)
(Needless to mention, that I did no back-up with the new phone........ I know, not very clever.)
Many thanks in advance for your efforts and assistance. :fingers-crossed:
If the phone was running stock Marshmallow, I don't think there is a method to root.

Lollipop - Android 5.0.2
Thanksfully I did not update, when phone was asking some weeks ago ....
Finally .......
Mobile phone is rooted.
After trying several methods, both .apk and .exe files, it worked then with kingroot.apk and the root.bat-file included in "Idol 3 Root". Checked with Root-Checker. So I'm a little bit proud of myself.
Happy am I ..... for the moment.
Next step will now be the recovery of the deleted data - like messages, documents and all the contacts.
Regards,
Uschi
(hopefully will sleep this night - last night I spent with searching, reading and re-checking) :cyclops:
If someone has a hint or two - would be great.
Device is not recognized as an additional drive - I knew that before, but thought, that there will be a possibility after rooting....
Thanks a lot in advance!
No hint at all?
I need the data (messages, contacts) urgently.
All photos, docs, etc. already found and back on the phone.
But still problems getting mentioned data ....
Keep my fingers crossed that someone can assist me.
Regards, Uschi
Other idea ....
As since Android 5, phone will not be recognized as "mass-storage", will it be possible to downgrade to latest version of Adroid 4.xxx, then trying to recover data via "Recuva".
If all data has been found and stored on PC, I then could updated to Lollopop again.
Or is this not possible?

at default your phone will be recognized as an MTP device (like a digital camera), so you won't see it as a pendrive ("mass storage")
if you did earlier a reset, it think you won't get back your messages.
how did you stored your contacts? sim card, local, google sync? if local only, you deleted them, when reseted your phone.

All data already recovered had been stored on the device.
When I tried the several programms available, I removed the SIM-card as well as the SSD.
So I thought, that there must be a possibility to get the messages too.
I know, that since Android 5, the device will not be recognized as "pendrive". That's why I tought about downgrade to Android 4.xxx, in order to try to recover the missing data.
Afterwards, I then would upgrade again to actual version 5.0.2.
Regards, Uschi
you can´t recover contacts and messages after factory reset. Your contacts should be backed up automatically on your gmail account.
