SUCCESS : ROOT + Encryption. - Galaxy Note 3 General

Hi guys,
I want to share my experiences about having ROOT + Encryption. This case of mine may pose as example for anyone who want to root their phones while want to have their device encrypted at the same time.
My phone is Samsung Note 3, Stock Lollipop 5.0, rooted with KingRoot 4.85 (kingroot.net). I think you can also have your phones to be rooted regardless of rooting mechanism. I picked KingRoot because it was the one successfully rooted my device without installing any custom recoveries, which is really IMPORTANT if we want to apply device encryption..:fingers-crossed:
Previously I posted question here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66643426&postcount=4538
No answer there so I keep tinkering and googling then found this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-...-device-encryption-root-t3338691/post66615860
On my case, my Note 3 was not encrypted (also have unencrypted external 32GB MicroSD), then I rooted it successully via exploit. I then started device encryption without any problems. I also have frozen Knox and many other Samsung bloatwares before started the encryption.
The conclusion is, as long as your rooting process didnt involve custom recoveries then you are good to go with device encryption, whether root first later encrypt or encrypt first then root later.
I am not expert and hoping this small info can help other non experts who want to taste rooting privileges while preserving device encryption.
Cheers

I am using CM12.1 (Android 5.1.1) custom ROM, IdleKernel 7.1.0 custom kernel, TWRP 3.0.2 custom recovery and my encryption works just fine.

What's performance like with encryption?

I haven't noticed any difference with my day-to-day usage.

Hello,
good for you, I got my Galaxy Note 3 yesterday. I went first of all to have it encrypted and it's not booting after the encryption It's not rooted, basically I launched the encryption as one of the first operations :-/

Hi,
very interesting thread. I rooted as well my S7 but installed TWRP - so the bootloader is unlocked and it seems, that an encryption doesnt make much sense.
If I got you right, an installation of a cfw with the described procedure isnt possible.
Is there a way, if you have already installed a custom recovery to get a S7 encrypted and rooted?

Today I tried 3 different strategies for getting my phone encrypted - none of them worked
Each time the phone reboots within 2-3 minutes and nothing gets encrypted. @tefole - I was only successful with the ROM of the polish guy (artas...), his ROM is excellent, but I can't see the SD card when I connect the phone to my laptop, so it's again a NO-GO

Till now, i were also not able to get it run.
In other threads i see people, which were successfull - with restrictions.
I am shocked a bit, why this "encryption on rooted phones" topic is not treated very much, because you dont get much information.
It seems, or this means that most of the guys are dont care with their data, if they lost their phone.
Imagine, you lose phone or get it stolen and you dont figure it out immediately:
whatsapp/threema chat history and the corresponding meda (in my case: 5 years old)
contacts
all emails!
photos / DCIM
social media account: instagram, twitter, etc..
google drive
downloads and documents
connection to my homenetwork (openvpn)
An encrypted phone is a important but imho is rooting a must-have too, to get your phone debloated and for using xposed, adaway, xprivacy, etc...
I guess, a conflict of interests.
@Galactus described me a way here.
From what I understand is the way:
-flash stock firmware (stock firmware is delivered with already encrypted partitions)
-root with CF-autoroot
-you can flash TWRP as well
-restore or flashing of any CFW is not possible with TWRP
quite a lot compromises - if you want to encrypt ur phone.
I renounce on features and comfort, before i risk to share my life with a thief

Yes, I am very worried about the situation you describe, and I don't even have half of the things you describe! And I'm so glad that you are using Threema. I couldn't convince any of my friends to install it - they use WhatsApp and Viber and when I mention privacy, they always keep saying - I have no secrets, I have nothing to hide and nothing to be afraid of. No comment...
And about encryption - the funny thing is, that I couldn't encrypt it with the stock ROM, this is why I rooted it - to be able to install a custom ROM. and now it's such a hassle to get it encrypted when it's been rooted! What an irony!
So I think that the only option for me is to use the Artas ROM, as it can encrypt the phone itself. But with it, I don't see the SD card when I connect the phone to my laptop - it means that I can copy a lot of data only to the phone and will then need to move it to the SD card - quite uncomfortable.
And also it's not possible to encrypt the SD card - but let's say, I'll put only mp3s and movies on it, so nothing really secret. Then another possibility is to return the phone and get another one, but I don't really have an alternative - maybe LG G4, but I think that the Note is much sweeter...
Or get an iPhone out of frustration

OK, so that's it ? No help, no support, no suggestions ?
I had expected more interest in this...

Hello, sorry for late replies on my thread as if my replies would even help though.
I still have the Galaxy Note 3 (Rooted) with Stock 5.0 Lollipop as described on this post. Please be reminded I was not using any custom recoveries.
Recently this phone came into this situation :
Previously working external 32 GB Samsung Evo Micro-SD is no longer capable to be used in encrypted form. First I though failed cards but then tried with other cards came with same problems, they all can be used in "unencrypted form".. so weird. If I try to encrypt it it says "Unable To Mount SD Card" which is weird since it can be mounted and used properly while in unencrypted form. This situation happened while internal device still in encrypted form. I then tried to decrypt all of them, both external and internal storage, weirdly it is succeed. At this point then my device really naked, non of storages are in encrypted form.
I then tried again to encrypt my internal storage (device encryption) with external SD card detached from device, with more than 10 failed trials resulted only as regular restarts then at 11th or so trials it then came into proper reboot and properly start encrypting my device (external storage was detached before process).
Right now the device is only have internal storage encrypted with external storage UN-encrypted. Maybe some days in future I will try again to re-encrypt the external sd card but so far internal storage encypted is enough while stays rooted. For anyone of you outthere who face regular restart without result when trying to encrypt via settings, dont give up! They tend to do stupid restarts but at some point they will sober and do proper encryption process. I was successfull re-encrypting internal storage after 11th or so reboots. Going with some cool drinks and listen to jazzy music before doing encyption helped much to the soul.

Problems after encryption

Hi there!
I'm running a bunch of problems after I tried to encrypt my phone.
Long story short: I use JellyTime as ROM, which have not the "encrypt phone" setting available.
By the way I found this Google Issue: http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod/issues/detail?id=5678
As you can see in #21, there's a procedure to enlarge the data partition so the system can be encrypted (or better, the option to encrypt would be in the settings menu). Then I tried to encrypt but it failed, asking me to factory reset my device. And I did it (damn).
Now every time I flash a ROM, Home button don't work, and the lock screen disappeared.
It works (home and lock screen working) only restoring a Nandroid backup that I had previously saved.
Is there anybody who can suggest me what to do? I think that the last chance is flashing the stock ruu and then flash again CWM and ROM, but if there exists another method I would be much more happy
This is in the wrong section, you should have posted this in the Q&A, this is the development section.

Same problems
I had the same problems, wanted to encrypt my DS to. On every Rooted Rom had this issue.
Perhaps because the base rom which is used is not for the DS.
I wanted to encrypt my DS because of the active sync settings which state that the android phone needs to be encrypted and a PIN needs to be sed.
I am trying to use a program and I like it very much
TouchDown HD (for ICS/JB)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nitrodesk.honey.nitroid
I am using this ROM
[ROM][22-01-13][Flinny] Andromadus Test builds - CM10.1[12]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2031694
Like this ROM very much, stable and working cam.
U can use TouchDown HD for 30 days completely.
The only downsite is that it has it's own agenda and e-mail.
But I don't mind the own e-mail because I can set my mail to only push mail during buisiness hours.
Love the program so far.

Thanks for the advice mate, but I had to play with encryption not for a personal need, but because of a lecture/exam for my university course of Cryptography II (luckily went very good ) and I needed to perform a demo to attack the encryption.
By the way, after a lot of search, seems that the mess with encryption is caused by the way clockworkmod handles partitions on internal storage, or something like that. That's why if you want to enable it (actually, just for make visible the encrypt option in Security menu!) you have to follow that procedure I linked in the first post (you have to make room for the crypto footer, 16 Kb).
Now, I was lucky to being able to mount my SD card after the failed encryption (if you search in the various threads you realize that this is a common issue after factory resetting), but some problems remained.
For sake of information, I found the solution by myself: I had a Nandroid backup working good made before the encryption, so I restored it (old \data partition layout returned), than wiped \data (and cache) from cwm. After that, I was able to flash every other ROM without problems.
Hope it will be useful!

Beginner questions - backing up using TWRP within 8GB moto

Hi, really looking for any advice or pointers. I have only now got round to trying to root my moto G xt1032 which is a very limiting 8GB of internal memory and no SD.
I manged to gain root access and install superuser and TWRP. Everything seemed to be ok but before messing around more i wanted to try to backup in some way (a recovery image sounded ideal). And then i just kept hitting walls; the 8GB was not enough to do a backup of the system, boot AND data. It seemed to say when i opened a (3rd party?) app TWRP Manager, that backups to external drives were not possible due to TWRP no longer supporting this feature.
Anyway I decided to risk just a backup of system and boot (leaving out data) before trying out a new ROM. After backing up i tried a slimkat rom....unfortunately the screen had a line constantly cascading down the display (this looked similar to the TWRP line running down the screen but just being a recovery console it made no difference to me - obviously it's no good having a buggy display on your handset proper).
So i decided to see if going through TWRP to restore the backup i made (of boot and system, omitting data) would work. At first everything booted but then i realized something was seriously wrong - no WIFI for example being available. So i have now come full circle and now flashed back to a stock rom that took about 4 hours to download from filefactory. I seem to be back up and running on the stock 5.0.2 vers (without bootloader unlocked i think?)
So my question really is - is there a way to backup using TWRP in my scenerio of only having an 8GB version which alone is not enough to include data in the backup? I also was not able to interact between the PC and moto whilst in the bootloader menu (by which i mean the files were not visible on my pc i was still able to use fastboot commands).
Sorry for the convuleted post - mainly I'm doing this as an experiment - would rather not brick right away but no great loss if i do. I'm just wondering how i can overcome this issue with doing a proper backup in TWRP as all i could backup previously was the boot and system which turned out no use as a recovery.
Simply use an OTG cable and any USB flashdrive (MotoG supports it, contrary to motoE)
In TWRP, you can choose the destination drive (sdcard0 or USB)

thanks!...that makes sense. I have nevertheless rerooted last night without going further into installing custom ROM's. The motoG seems much snappier and I have adaway working (which has always been a big incentive to rooting for me). I will try the OTG method for doing backup and more soon no doubt cheers

Vienna calling with some problems ......

Dear all,
just registered and already huge difficulties and problems.
The story behind:
My memory-device (my brain) decided to cancel the "password-file" - so everything was lost. Not only the pattern for the phone, but all other numbers too (credit card, account numbers .......... was not very funny. Happend within 10 minutes. Nearly all important passwords are back now, but pattern still missing....)
As I could not remember the pattern, although I tried about thousand possibilities, I did a hard-reset.
As there are several programs out there in order to recover the phone-data and messages, I tried to get into the deep of Android - but failed.
Tried to root with several programs, but at about 75% they stopped and rooting failed.
I'm not very firm with root, boot and such things - so I would ask you to support me.
(I'm in urgent need of some of the data already .........)
(Needless to mention, that I did no back-up with the new phone........ I know, not very clever.)
Many thanks in advance for your efforts and assistance. :fingers-crossed:
If the phone was running stock Marshmallow, I don't think there is a method to root.

Thanksfully I did not update, when phone was asking some weeks ago ....
Finally .......
Mobile phone is rooted.
After trying several methods, both .apk and .exe files, it worked then with kingroot.apk and the root.bat-file included in "Idol 3 Root". Checked with Root-Checker. So I'm a little bit proud of myself.
Happy am I ..... for the moment.
Next step will now be the recovery of the deleted data - like messages, documents and all the contacts.

(hopefully will sleep this night - last night I spent with searching, reading and re-checking) :cyclops:
If someone has a hint or two - would be great.
Device is not recognized as an additional drive - I knew that before, but thought, that there will be a possibility after rooting....
Thanks a lot in advance!
No hint at all?
I need the data (messages, contacts) urgently.
All photos, docs, etc. already found and back on the phone.
But still problems getting mentioned data ....
Keep my fingers crossed that someone can assist me.
Regards, Uschi
Other idea ....
As since Android 5, phone will not be recognized as "mass-storage", will it be possible to downgrade to latest version of Adroid 4.xxx, then trying to recover data via "Recuva".
If all data has been found and stored on PC, I then could updated to Lollopop again.
Or is this not possible?

at default your phone will be recognized as an MTP device (like a digital camera), so you won't see it as a pendrive ("mass storage")
if you did earlier a reset, it think you won't get back your messages.
how did you stored your contacts? sim card, local, google sync? if local only, you deleted them, when reseted your phone.

All data already recovered had been stored on the device.
When I tried the several programms available, I removed the SIM-card as well as the SSD.
So I thought, that there must be a possibility to get the messages too.
I know, that since Android 5, the device will not be recognized as "pendrive". That's why I tought about downgrade to Android 4.xxx, in order to try to recover the missing data.
Afterwards, I then would upgrade again to actual version 5.0.2.

you canĀ“t recover contacts and messages after factory reset. Your contacts should be backed up automatically on your gmail account.

I've deleted some important files by mistake and I would really like to recover them.

Hello,
I hope that this is the right side of the forum to describe my problem. I desperately need help. It's a long story:
I had on my Samsung phone the app of "Chrome", which I always use to surf the internet. Using the google browser IN THAT APP, I have downloaded lots of things (I'm a scholar, so I like to read and I use to download everything that I found interesting). I have updated the app and I was frustrated, because I couldn't take anymore screenshots while surfing in "incognito mode". So, I decided to delete the update: i went into "settings", then "apps", and then I have brought back the app of "Chrome" as it was when i bought my phone. Sadly, I then noticed that I had lost every file in my download folder; I had lost every file downloaded with that app.
I had not synchronized my Google account, I can do no backup. I'm so angry and sad because I've always thought that the files downloaded would have stayed in my phone until I and only I would have decide to delete them.
I have done a lot of research on the internet and I have found out that there are some apps that can recover a very large part of lost files. But, in order to do this, I have to root my phone.
My phone is a Samsung Galaxy J2 SM-J250Y/DS, and the Android version is 7.1.1. I have seen that rooting a phone could be very dangerous; also, to me is very complicated. But there is a program called Kingoroot, which, once installed on my computer, could (it's a possibility, I know!) rooting my phone easily.
What should I do? Should I try the rooting method? It seems to me the only way...
I ask you any suggestions... Please help me. I am a depressed student that, in this life, can only enjoy reading and books...
(I am Italian, and I hope my English is understandable. If I did any mistake, please forgive me.)
Sorry can't help you get what you lost back... I feel your pain.
After losing thousands of bookmarks over the decades I started using Colornotes to save my important bookmarks.
You can save the hyperlink with a title, color, and whatever text you want to add. If you punch the hyperlink it opens in the default browser.
The app allows you to save it's data to your sd card which you can backup on your PC.
Use ApkExport to make a loadable copy of the app to future proof it.

Thank you very much for your reply.
But... If I root my phone, and if the rooting is done without any damage, is there a possibility to get most of my files back? Or, even if I root my device, I will never be able to recover them?
It sounds like it deleted the data when you rolled the apk back (to factory load?).
If so it's going to be very sketchy at best to recover them.
I guess history's been deleted as well?
There are many coders here that have far greater knowledge than myself with Chrome.
My understanding of rooting is very basic as with Chrome which I rarely use.
If no one else replies in a day or two, bump it back to the top. Hope you find a work around solution.

Rooting Android by means of TWRP and/or Magisk ( keyword: SuperSU ) affects its /data partition where phone's data typically are housed. Therefore it cannot be excluded that data stored there is overwritten and can therefore no longer be restored.

Is there the possibility if deleted that it's still on the system cache and is there a way to recover it if so on a none rooted phone?
Maybe using ABD?
Don't some on the "one touch" root solutions claim to preserve the data?
Android doesn't have a recycle bin thus nothing gets cached. Deleting a file means nothing else than marking the space it occupies - whereever this disk space is located - as usable so that it can be overwritten by the system.
Have never used a "One-Click-Root" utility ...

Yeah I was aware of the overwrite issue but on an unrooted device I don't think you can access the system cache. Even if you could the data could be so juxtaposed from lose of file structure as to be unusable.
One-Click-Root worked on older versions of Kitkat allegedly.
So... I understand. But I want to try. I want to root my phone. But I have to know how and I must prevent my phone from all the risks.
blackhawk: you said that the "One-Click-Root" method worked only for Kitkat Android. But I have read here that with Kingoroot i could have a chance:

Root any Android Nougat 7.0 7.1 device with KingoRoot.

Also, in the link, at the end of the page, there is written that I can root my phone with my PC, which, to me, seems a safer way. It's the main idea I had when I decided to write in this forum, because I wanted to know the opinions of people that are very able to use these methods and these kind of programs.)

You can try it; it will either work or nothing will happen. Even if it works it's likely those files are gone. Maybe better to chalk it up to another lesson from the University of Hard Knocks.
You could try contacting Google tech support to see if they have any ideas.
The last AT&T firmware update was specifically to block easy rooting by Kingroot; the rats learn quick.

Hi, I would suggest you can try free tool for Android Phone such as Stellar Data Recovery for Android which easily recover deleted files like, photos, audio files, videos files from your Android phone internal memory storage.

That drfone again. Scamware.
Do Not Use.
Drfone if used will encrypt "recovered" data and ask you to pay for it. After which the original data is gone leaving only the encrypted copy.
It is not free... not to be trusted!
Ran into this scam many years ago.

Factory reset didn't decrypt my Android. It's Android 11 [SOLVED]

Hello, My phone is new & fresh. Sometimes during playing games or heavy tasks, I see some lags. It's KG5K or Spark 8c model & Android 11. I noticed that my phone is already showing encrypted in 'Encryption & credentials'. I tapped on the Encrypted word but nothing comes to make it decrypt. I am a boy and a student. (Not a celebrity ) I don't want privacy or encrypted Android. I want to get highest performance from my phone. So factory reset it from 'Settings' app. But still showing encrypted. So I tried to get to the recovery mode to hard reset. I saw so many tutorials for the same model. Everywhere Volume + & Power button for this phone. I tried but can't get there. Anyway, after connecting another android via wireless adb. I commanded to go to recovery. Finally, I got there. And hard reset it.But I saw it's still encrypted . Any solution? I already lost so many app data because didn't create backup. PLEASE HELP ME DECRYPT IT. SO MY PHONE CAN BE MORE FAST!! AND LET ME USE IT ASAP. I DON'T WANT TO USE IT UNTIL I DECRYPT IT !!!!!!!!

Thx. But it didn't work. They are talking about keys. Please note that I can't go through the 'encryption' button. Showing no option to disable it or to input keys. Android Device Manager also not showing Encrypt) Decrypt option. I bought it from official Tecno show room. Still if the phone is fake, how can I discover it? Or want to know if there is any way to check if my phone is really encrypted. I have doubt about that the 'setting's 'encryption' word is like a demo word just showing itself. HELP ME!!
To check Android's encryption state you may use ADB
Code:
adb devices
adb shell "getprop ro.crypto.state"

Sir, I entered the command via wireless adb. It says "encrypted" . Please see the attached photo. I am afraid now. Help me decrypt it (specially via adb) Any command to do it? !. Please HELP ME!!
You can't remove encryption, AFAIK. Use the device with encryption.
FYI:
That happens when Android boots up
Sorry sir, but that's not a solution. I want to decrypt it. To make it faster. It's Android 11 and it's 2023. It's a modern age and nothing is impossible. (HAPPY NEW YEAR ) You can't leave it like that, sir. Thx.
You simply didn't understand it: encryption takes place when Android boots up, this is forced by Android kernel.
Flash a Custom ROM what doesn't encrypt Android.
It has 12+1 months warranty. So I don't want to install TWRP, root, Custom ROM, Customized Kerbal etc. Because, I'm a student and my exam will held within 4 month from now. Please sir assure me, as you said encryption or decryption happens when Android boots up. So it may take a while to boot up completely. I've no problem in it. Please sir tell me after it boots up is there any decryption process happens further. I meant is encryption/decryption happens only when it boots up and only for that moment. Or it continuously or Constantly run this encrypt/decrypt all the time (when the Android is powered on ) Hope ya understand . And Help to free me from this problem. Thx

then you can't decrypt. you need to format in twrp, reboot into twrp, and flash the decrypt file for your device.
Encryption is mandatory in Android 10 and up.
Factory Data Reset won't decrypt your device and will only regenerate new encryption keys.
The only way to decrypt your device is to unlock the bootloader, and flash no-encrypt in a custom recovery to prevent re-encrypting the flash memory.
Phones nowadays can't experience performance impact from encryption since they have a Dedicated AES engine implemented in hardware so that they can decrypt blocks in memory on-the-fly. You shouldn't really be decrypting your device as it is NOT RECOMMENDED.
Though if you really want to decrypt your device, some phones are decrypted by not using a lock screen as some phones require a lock screen so that they can get data from there to derive a secure encryption key.
Look, your phone doesn't slow down for encryption, the problem you have is that your phone is a low end device. Even if you manage to decrypt it, you won't see any difference except that if someone steals your phone, they will have every data you have. You need to optimize it, you may root it and delete system apps and things like that, when I want a boost in games, i temporary disable Google Play Services and Google Play, then the phone goes faster.
