Hello, I have been doing some reading here as well I sit on IRC on the #skyrocket channel which is pretty quiet these days.
I am using TPC GB rom build with Da_G kernel, and so far (since november 2011) it has been solid.
I have tried alienROM for the ICS leak, but it is missing some kernel features I like, however is a decent ROM. I was wondering if there were any nice ROMs or Kernels for ICS yet, or are well all still waiting for samsung to release an official ICS build so proper kernels can be made. It has been quite awhile and are we even getting an official build for the I727R (Rogers)
I wanted to post here if that is OK because I have not been finding too many answers to what I am looking for. I am in no rush really, but wanted to start thinking about tweeking my phone. Would it be best to play with leaked builds or just wait till some official builds come out then wait and go from there. If anyone has suggestions that would be great.

Hi. All the roms you'll find here are decent and will each appeal to different people and their needs. I've found the latest SkyICS to be excellent in many ways. Try a few different ones to see what you like. Any will be better than stock GB.
As for kernels, there are a few out, but none will have all the features we like about a custom kernel until the official ICS is released because -as far as I know - the code for the kernel hasn't been released yet.
For example, we won't have overclocking until someone can tear into the official released kernel.
I am not a developer, so please, someone correct me if I'm wrong about this.

Thanks for the reply, I am on GB (not stock) running rom / kernel (4.3.5) just can't decide on what ICS I want to go with. So I will continue to read away

Yes. He posted that before the t989 source dropped. Cymbaline used fixes from that source. We also have instigatorx kernel for aosp based roms.

Cm tweak is for cm based ROMs, all others is for, well, all others. Flash kernel after flashing ROM.

How i will find which roms are CM based?
Read the thread about the ROM you are interested in. If I'm not familiar with a ROM, i generally read the first page and the last few pages. That way I see what the dev says about it, and see more recent reviews/comments about the current version

U can go to setting-->about rom and read the information of your rom

Can anyone tell me what is the source of Mahdi-Rom?
Can I flash Franco kernel for this ROM? I noticed the the Franco kernel is not compatible with CM sources. So I want to confirm the source of Mahdi-Rom in case it is from CM source.

I believe it's ASOP base but has some CM aspects.
Either way if you check the 5th post of the Franco kernel FAQ thread it lists Mahdi-rom as supported

Hi everyone,
I know this is probably a really nooby question, but im running the most recent nightly of cyanogenmod and i noticed it has its own kernel under About Phone. I would like to use faux kernel instead. Is it safe to flash faux kernel over the top of it or will it mess things up? Thanks guys!
All ROMs have kernels. They can't work without one so this makes the rules of changing kernels with cm no different from any other Rom.
You're right though, it's a really nooby question. I'm not trying to offend but not knowing this means you're not ready for flashing kernels. Please read the sticky threads in Q&A and general to bump your knowledge up to the next level first
Fyi, cm use CAF kernels only so you can only Flash CAF kernels.

you can flash any kernel you want.. but it doesnt mean that itll run. cyanogenmod uses caf for source, the moved away from aosp. so you can flash and run kernels based in caf, not aosp. faux kernel is an aosp kernel, so if you flash it you wont boot up.

Ive read the stickies. I wanted to be cautious because im new to cyanogen and i didnt wanna mess anything up. I was using Cataclysm with Faux so I didnt need to know about CAF kernels back then. Thanks for your help anyway

when i was using lollipop i always went with ak kernel but since ak kernel stopped supporting oneplus one when marshmallow roms began to come i became a bit confused as to which kernel i should use.
so i did a bit of searching with kernels that existed. and the kernels i found that i could use was
1. Sultan
2. Tyr Kernel
3. Andy Kernel
4. Radioactive Kernel
so i was wondering what kernel is the best alternative to ak kernel and if so does that kernel have any problems which makes so i should avoid it?
p.s im open to discussions and even having an idea of what i should do will probly help more then it hurts

It's pretty simple actually CAF kernels usually stated in the title of the kernel thread work on CAF ROMs e.g. Sultan, and any ROM that states CAF in its title works with these kernels.
CM kernel such as Lightning, Boeffla and Andy all state specifically CM12/13 in the thread title and those work with stock CM and ROMs derived from CM source and kernel trees.
Finally Omni based kernels only one works properly (Donkey Kernel) also states Omni in the thread title.
The common denominator is that they all clearly state in the thread title what they are for so there's nothing to discuss on which ones to be used for which ROM. In regards to quality that's a bit trickier as we all like different things in a kernel and personally I'm a big fan of Boeffla when I'm on CM13 cause it works great and the app is very intuitive. I've also tried Andy kernel and its got a good mix of features. I'm on Omni 5.1.1 nightlies so I'm on the stock kernel but when I move back to Marshmallow I can update on kernels

which kernels works with which rom i already knew but i still respect the answer i got. well the main concern i had was about the quality of the roms and which roms is good for what.
It depends on what you want. For example some devs here around merge a bunch of patches to improve sth. Sometimes i dont know what they are doing. I also started with that but soon i have learned less is more. Than there are kernels with gazillion oft features to choose. Thousond hotplugs and governors etc. Than there are small and simple kernels without such experimental features close to stock. I for example dont want to tune 5 days to improve me results i like it simple. So you have 3 or more different types to choose.
1. experimental maybe unstable kernels with lots of patches
2. kernels with lots of features
3. small and simple and more stable kernel close to stock
There is no best or better kernel. Choose the one you like best.
Its your choice.
You also missed the CAF lightning Kernel built off of AK's caf kernel. It's the best kernel for CAF right now IMO. It's basically all of AK kernel's great features just updated to support CAF marshmallow and bug fixes/ latest commits. Works with synapse and all of the original AK CAF kernel profiles.
