Hello!
I just flashed Franco Kernel on my Nexus 5 with stock ROM, but I can only see Interactive and Performance governor when using SetCPU. Does anyone know why? Does this kernel even have support for this governors? If that is the case, please recommend another (stable) kernel. Thanks!
Hi,
Yes, Franco kernel uses only Interactive and Performance governors. It's "hardcoded" in the kernel so you can't add other governors unless you recompile it with your own stuff (in short). It's a choice made by Franciscofranco, that's all. So it's normal that some apps didn't show another governor.
I won't recommend you another kernel, check the two dev forums for another kernels, read the OP's of each kernel thread and try by yourself to find another kernel that suits your needs in term of governors (in short all the other kernels -no CAF or CM kernels-, not the ones based on Franko kernel obviously).
Since you used Franco kernel you are using an AOSP/stock rom so check from AOSP kernels.
Franco kernel only includes the Interactive and Performance governors. There is nothing wrong.
If you are not happy, try another one. Theres no point of someone recommending you a kernel since all phones are different and will thus react differently to kernels. In addition, while one kernel may be good for someone else, it may not serve your needs. This is why asking for the best rom/kernel is against the rules.
I'm running Franco Kernel on the interactive governor and have no issue
Okay, I understand. Thanks anyways!
Hello community,
I am a rookie in the subject of kernels/roms and I would love to have some precious help from any1 that knows even the smallest of information. I recently installed CM kernel and CM nightly 0422. The thing is, I read in many forums (in here as well) that there is a kernel that can boost battery life to its max, Franco Kernel. But I also read that it is somehow incompatible with CM 10+ and causes bootloop if you install it with CM already in phone. What I can't understand is why can't I just simply replace CM kernel (like stock kernel was replaced by CM kernel) by Franco Kernel? What is the fact that I am missing?
ALL (and I mean ALL) help will be highly appreaciated, thanks for your time

first off.. there is no magic pill to give your phone for battery life. battery life mostly depends on your personal usage, your personal setup, your apps used, and most importantly the quality of your phone/data connection. everything else is minor for battery life, including kernels.
cm uses CAF as its base now, they went away from aosp(like most kernels here). so everything that is aosp based is not compatible with cm anymore. franco kernel is aosp based(most kernels are). there are a few kernels that are CAF based built just for cm and cm based roms.

Thanks for your time and your answer
First of all, I know for myself that there is no magic pill about battery life, I just read in too many threads that FK added a good portion of battery life (with same use of phone like when it had CM) ! Moreover it allows you to overclock (my) Nexus5 beyond 2.2GHz, something that CM doesn't allow you too (I know that overclocking kills battery, I just want to test something). What I don't understand is how can FK mess up with CM when both are different kernels and by installing FK over CM means that FK replaces CM. There is no CM in the end, only FK. Or not...? What have I understood wrong?
Thanks again

yes, franco would replace cm kernel if all worked right. but what you are doing is replacing cm kernel with franco kernel, but cm rom stays on your phone. franco kernel is incompatible with cm rom. since franco is aosp and cm is caf, your phone would never boot up all the way.

So, if I am getting your point right, since one is aosp and the other is caf THAT is the reason why CM doesn't uninstall and will exist together with franco? Is there a way to permanently delete CM in order to install franco? Maybe to go back to stock kernel then install FK?

its not about the kernel, its about the rom. they are different things. when you flash a kernel(any), it replaces the kernel thats on your phone(kernels come with roms, cm kernel with cm rom). cm rom includes cm kernel, both are built from caf source. franco kernel is aosp, it is not compatible with cm rom. it has nothing to do with cm kernel, it replaces cm kernel when flashed. but you will never boot up your phone because it isnt compatible with cm rom.

ok, finally I got it, thanks to you Last question... is there a way to get FK now or am I just locked to caf due to CM "for life"? which way (if there is any at all) in your opinion is the best way to go from CM to FK? maybe go back to stock rom/kernel then flash FK? Will this work?

no, they arent compatible at all. you can not use franco kernel with any cm based roms. you can change roms and use franco kernel with it, any aosp rom or even the stock rom. but cm isnt compatible at all with franko kernel.

If your looking for a good CAF kernel to run with a PAC or CM based ROM. I'd recommend the ElementalX CAF kernel. It's very stable, rich features, great performance and great battery life. Make sure to read the OP for directions and if you decide to try it out download the ElementalX R38 version with the aromma installer (not the express version) As with running any new kernel run it for a few days minimum to allow for it by on settle in.
There is another option for you to explore too - http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/development/cm11-users-heres-how-aospnon-caf-t2626961
This allows you to run a script that will basically De-CAF your rom and allow you to run a AOSP kernel on CM11ROMs.. Be sure to read the OP. It works with many CM11 and CM based ROMs, but not on all the newest versions. Definitely worth checking out.

Thanks for your interest and time! I will sure check both your ROM and the De-CAF script soon and post my opinion/experience ! For newbies like me that are reading this post, here is a quite enbrightening thread about CAF and qualcomm processors (although it's Reddit, it's quite explanatory).
Peace!

Just some infoAs of V1.1, there is a new install method. If it doesn't work on install, you will need the original kernel from the Rom you are running. If you are just updating, then we should be fine.

Sorry guys. Had an update ready to go, and life kicked in.
I'll hopefully get this updated in the next few days.
V1.1 in the OP
A little more to play with now.
Edit: I'm trying a different updater-script I found. If it works, it should make it compatible with more ROMs.
Big thanks to whoever came up with it!
I can confirm that it's running beautifully on Cyanide L - no issues at all so far.
Being an amateur, I'm not entirely sure what all the different governors and schedulers can offer. I've played around a but, but if anyone has a description of them that would be great.
Is the DT2W feature a function of the kernel or ROM? I ask, in part, because I see it discussed often in ROM threads, but rarely in kernel threads. And the few times I've seen the issue raised in kernel forums, it's never addressed. I assume that's because it's a dumb question in the context of replacing the kernel. However, I seem to lose the DT2W feature with every kernel I've been able to successfully install, which leads me to suspect it is a function of the kernel.
To be clear, this is not a complaint. I'm just trying to determine if I'm doing something wrong or if this is an inevitable consequence of replacing the stock kernel.
I just installed Mutiny-Kernel-AOSP-850-V1.1 on CM12.1 and it looks like I have oversharpening

I think, is built into a kernel. But not this one.
The other kernels that do say they have it, I think you need to activate it in terminal. They have it posted in their threads.

It should be built in. But if you don't like it, flash skins script to set it to your liking.
How's the battery life guys?

It's using the ramdisk from the rom you are coming from. That should hopefully solve the ramdisk issues.
@engine95:
Hello, I am interested in doing some kernel programming for the LG D850. I just got the phone recently and want to add a few things I'd like to use this kernel and install script/ramdisk as a base. Kindly requesting your permission. Also, what version of the kernel source was this based on? I requested release of 21q or newer from LG today, hopefully they post it soon. Thanks for your consideration.

Lightning Kernel v22 (updated to 23 now) and Lightning kernel based on Linux kernel v3 works for me with exodus. Personally prefer the latter. Boeffla didnt boot for me with exodus and i didnt try any caf kernels.
If you have heating issues you may want to try the 6th June build if you arent using it already
Heat issue does exist in build may 23 - june 1.. Even if you change the kernel.
Check your current build.. Update to the latest one

Praise God! The AKLU kernel has arrived on the Galaxy Note Edge in the flavor of NOUGAT!
NOTE: I highly recommend turning off THERMAL CORE CONTROL! Use THERMAL TEMPERATURE THROTTLE instead. Thermal core control has been known to cause random reboots on this kernel before when gaming or during heavy use. You can use Kernel Adiutor to adjust these settings.

Thanks for the thought, but I do not accept donations. I just tinker for fun, and have my own rewards. Besides, guys like @Mickey387 did all the heavy lifting, I just try to put the device trees and vendor blobs to good use, with a few edits here and there. Glad to know that my work is appreciated, though.
The slim 7 aklu kernel appears to be slightly unstable at this time. Please use with caution.
EDIT: Updated the kernel and fixed a few bugs that I missed in the first build. SHOULD be better now. Please turn off thermal core control for best performance!
Also, if you flashed superSU in Slim to root it, you need to flash the kernel, then immidiately flash superSU, then reboot.

I have noticed that many of these processors on the note4/edge are of a good bin.. Mine can run about 45mv off from stock.. Have you ever considered adding CPU Voltage control to help a bit with battery longivity? I do thank you for your excellent work, your rom's and kernels truly show that it is the programmer not the hardware that matters.... Godspeed....

Thanks afbcamero, those are kind words.
On my MM kernels I did implement UV, but the way I did it in MM fails to pass in the N kernel. Not because it doesn't work, but rather that new build standards don't allow it. With the recent birth of my son, I have not had time yet to go back to it and figure out what was wrong yet. Are you familiar with kernel work? You could look at my github and my kernel source, perhaps you could show me where I went wrong?
If I can get passed that, I can implement the UV again. I also have the same problem for GPU voltage control, which I used to put on my MM kernels as well.
Perhaps when life slows down a bit, I can look back into it.

Oh I see, i honestly never looked at the structure of Nougat kernels. Any time I want to implement a change somebody does it better and beats me to the punch.. I will look at it just in case I see something..
On another note, these things however fun (development) not being trully important, may your family be blessed by the big guy.
Thanks! I'm always open to ideas on kernel improvement.
