Let's talk about Xperia Drop Resistance / Waterproof - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
Today I'm back with a question without answer (to me)
Let's talk about the drop resistance!
Since I have my z5 it didn't fall "yet", but I'm asking myself, what if the z5 fall off my hand, if the back panel or the display are broken, is my z5 still waterproof?
If it fall, nothing is broke but there are some scratches on some corner/side ect.. Is it still waterproof?
Does the z5 was studied to resist in those cases?
Ect...
So let's talk about this, because I want to protect mine to maximum (given the price of the phone) and i want to order a case. BTW if you have some good case and you want to share your experience, feel or feedback, go ahead, the more we are the better it will be

OMG this thread was posted at the same hour i broke my xperia's back anyway when i tested the preasure test, my phobe passed it altought it is heavly damaged at the back and at the corner, it was dropped in a close distance 0_o i am disappointed with sony that the back crack so easly at the same time i am amased that my phone still waterproof)( altought i used a back screen protector, the back did cracked but the screenprotector is undamaged lol)

If you brake your front glass, the screen won't detect your touches. So it doesn't matter if it is waterproof or not after that

Well I guess this thread bring bad luck, because mine fell too . I dropped it up my hand, he is baptized now !
Fortunately it has only a scratch at the upper left corner, for my peace of mind I tried to put it on water, this is how i've proceed:
I have submerged the first half of the z5, dry it, and tried to use it, it works pretty fine!
Now the second half same method and still works great!
I'm pretty impressed by Sony here, I didn't tried to submerge it completely but still, it's good for the time being :good:
Guess it's time to buy a case

You can try the preasure test instead or download from the playstore waterproof test app

How does the pressure test works?

I've tried 2 waterproof apps and it's fully Watertight one again good news! But can someone tells me how to test using the pressure test menu and how the app abd the sensors works? Is it sure and safe? Thank again

If the preasure rise when you put force on your phone then your device is good to go underwater of it is stable then no
Anyway it isnt recommande to trust apps but just for making sure

Yeah thank you
Actually it's, like I've said before, just for my peace of mind, anyways I'm reassured

Is the Moto G a waterproof phone?

I was watching the scratch test video and saw the guy put this phone in the sink and it still works. I had no idea whether it is waterproof or not, I just bought it as it was a good phone for a good price but does anyone know if Moto G is really waterproof or not?
It isnt water proof. Nothing is water proof. The moto g is in spite of being a mainstream phone, highly water resistant however. That means, dont try it for fun, but if it takes a swim, it will most likely be fine.

No. It has an oleophobic coating whic is not waterproof.
There's a video on youtube with a test of water resistant on a moto g.
The moto went 30 seconds under water and it survived with no damage!
It's not water proof, but it can survive an 'accident'.

Well, when water goes in, less comes out, so kind of yes
Am I just THAT unlucky??
So... I accidentally dropped my five-days old Moto G on the toilet, rescued it after three seconds tops, dried it super carefully, put it on rice to absorb any possible water drop on it and still not working. The notification light (the small white one right next to the front camera) is going in and out while connected to the charger or the laptop. Any ideas on how to make it work again??
Why did it work perfectly to the people who made the waterproof Youtube video and it stayed on the water for half an hour and mine is not working!?? waterproof my @#¢... That or I'm the unluckiest person of the day!
Any suggestion will be much appreciated! Thanks

I know this post was a long time ago, and you probably already have a new phone but for anyone else who encounters this problem, your phone is probably just in sleep mode. It does that to protect the battery from any critical damage it might have taken. I forgot how to get it back to normal but no worries, just look it up in another forum or something.

What, if any, issues/manufacturing faults did you experience with your Z3?

I wanted to create this topic because I am curious and because I see many people asking if this phone isn't too fragile or has QC issues. I believe that the people with problems are the vocal minority but the best way to find out is to have a poll.
So, have you found any faults or is your device right as a little (Xperia) ray of sunshine?
You can select more than one option.
1st phone: defective camera (purple noise)
2nd phone: USB flap misalign when closed
3rd and current phone: so far so good
My first phone's screen had an area in a line from top to bottom, right of centre that had no touch sensitivity. The area was about .5 cm wide.
I couldn't touch anything on the line or drag anything across it.
I contacted Amazon.co.uk and they sent me a new one right away. They also let me hang onto the defective one until the replacement arrived without charging me.
Awesome! thanks for the replies so far! Please keep them coming!
My phone is perfect. The USB flap is a teeny tiny bit, like a fraction of a milimeter, misaligned but the seal is intact, I do not intent to take my phone into the pool anyway and thought it was pointless to go through the hassle of returning an otherwise flawless phone for something half of my friends can't see when I point it out. My carpenters eye is ridiculously accurate so meh.
The back glass scratched a few hours after removing cover. Ive only has the phone for 2 days and Bell wont take it back with damages. The phone has only ever been in my otherwise empty pocket...
Anyone else experiencef this? I thought both were gorilla glass.
I don't think the back is as scratch resistant as the front, as I too have very minor scratches on the back, using front and back tempered glass protects now.
My unit only has a slight annoyance which is the headphone jack is wobbly. It has about less than 1mm of wiggle room. I can see a gap between the metal body and the Jack. The Jack works perfectly currently.
Don't know if it's worth bringing to the Sony store, or to just seal it with some super glue or something. :/
Took some underwater pictures at the aquarium, thought it'd be cool.

That's what I'm assuming. I could also hear air bubbles when squeezing my device... :/
It worked fine for a while, I even rinsed it off in the sink after exposing it to the water. (It was fresh water, but there were fish in it) No more than 6 inches submerged for like 30 seconds. Was going through the pictures and the touchscreen just stopped working.

In reality, from what I have read, some are not waterproof out of the box. So sad to hear this when Sony advertised this phone as waterproof. Before submerging, did you try the water test via software (pressure sensor)?

Yes(Although I don't really think the test proves the waterproofness), I had also had it completely submerged for 10 minutes when I bought the device.

This really sucks because there is no way we can tell if it is waterproof until we really submerge it. I am going to avoid submerging mine at all cost.
Hi
I had some problems with this new phone.
1: no nfc working
2: horizontal section from 9 to 177 of the touchscreen doesnt work properly
So i get a third replacement by SFR (in France) and I think I get a fully working Z3.
I love the advertisement of Sony for ils Z3 in France : demand perfection (exigez la perfection)!
I've had 2 copper Z3's. First one, front glass shattered whilst in my front left pocket, nothing else in the same pocket. I've carried all my phones in the same manner and never had an issue. Also had the pink spot issue.
Second phone has 2 stuck pixels.
I really like the phone. They just don't like me
Got a replacement from T-Mobile, the camera button seems to be stuck.. Only works like 20% of the time. Instead of feeling like a dual stage button, it's just a single press with no tactile feel.
When in the camera app it either does nothing, or is stuck trying to focus repeatedly.
Has the same issue with the glass coming up on the back as well. Definitely feels and sounds as if adhesive it being "pulled apart" per se.
Also, the flaps seem to be a little mis-aligned.
My T-Mobile must have gotten a bad batch...
If you have a misaligned usb flap, will replacing the flap with a spare one fix it or is it an issue with the frame?
First one I got in store, noticed the power and volume up buttons were stuck and wouldn't click, the next one's speakerphone didn't work, now this one's camera button is stuck and doesn't have the two stage shutter and can't take photos in the stock app. I still prefer the phone over any other currently out.
Edit: I got mine through t-mobile.
UPDATE: The camera button has come unstuck and works fine now, though it does get a little stuck still.
Two display/screen issues :
- Screen burn-in all the time : status bar and home button more particularly. I strongly suspect a defective screen : I send my Z3 back to Sony, and they did... a software update ! I'm kind of curious about what they did exactly because my phone was completely updated. Of course, it didn't solve anything...
- Strange parasite lines surrounding text lines. Probably a software issue. I'm waiting Lollipop to see what it gonna do on my phone.
Sent mine in for a screen repair in the USA. Its a d6603 international version that is rooted and an unlocked boot loader stock. They just informed me that they cannot fix due to it not having the correct software and it not being a US phone.

Help! How to remove moisture on Z5 back camera?

Hi,
I put my new Z5 under a faucet, but after I dried up the handset I found water on the surface of the back camera. I tested and everything looks good and functions well, except the back camera only gives blurred images. In an hope that water would evaporate, I tried heating the camera cautiously with a drier, but it doesn't change much. Now I'm just letting the phone sit in a dry&airy place.
Does anyone have any good advice?
My only suggestion would be to chuck in a bowl of rice (uncooked of course)
and never let any phone get wet again!
We really need to put this "waterproof phone" myth to bed. You mix water and electronics at your peril.
Well guys, problem sooooooolved
I put the phone on my macbook-bacon-toaster-pro, and moisture promptly disappeared. Shoutout to adobe for never solving the overheating problem on mac running flash players
but the whole waterproof thing seems proven a myth
Mine has been fine under water and so has others same as my Xperia Z so where is the myth?

put the camera to record in 4k for a long time. the heat from inside can help.

Did you not notice the OP? And there sure are a darn bunch o' folk piping up about the whole Z series over the years. No reason to think the Z5 will be different. Your Z5 seems to be fine for now. I'm not getting mine wet - same as every other phone I've had.
For further exploration of the waterproof myth:

You get your phone wet, you take your chances.
Man I've had Z1, 2, 3 and 5 and taken all of them in swimming pools and showers. My phone gets coated with dust at work everyday and I wash it with soap and water daily. I'm not disagreeing that people obviously aren't so confident/lucky but I've never had a problem. My friend had a foggy rear lense once and the solution was to open the flap for ventilation and turn in 4k video for a bit.
So you've never had a problem with water but your friend did. I'm not sure I'm getting my point across...
I'm very careful about checking and re-checking the waterproof flaps. All I'm saying is, for me, it's a major feature and I intend to use it and have without issue. I just want the OP to here the other side. That's all.
If you go in the pool with one why not just put it inside a plastic clear bag? Chances are water will not get in and even if it did the phone is IP68 rated so water shouldn't be an issue anyway.

+1 to this sentiment. I think it's possibly advertised as 'water resistant' rather than waterproof, but semantics aside, you'd have to be daft to assume that you can repeatedly dunk your phone in water/swimming pools/whatever and have it work perfectly. The IP rating should be seen as a degree of protection and not a blank cheque guaranteeing the phone will survive.
I've used an Xperia Z to take photos in a swimming pool before, but been careful to keep the phone above the water, and tried to ensure it remained as dry as possible. The IP rating was nice to know that the phone would probably survive the odd splash but I didn't think it meant that it would work (and continue to work) fully submerged.
Similar issue with my z5 compact

Hello,
Would you mind elaborating on what you did exactly to solve this issue... thanks a lot!

Best case?

Sup dudezzz! My Xperia Z2 is arriving next week and some people say their Z2's cracked from a very low height, so I wanna protect that phone. My friends Z2 have been surviving tons of falls (without a case) and is still working perfectly, not a single crack, so I don't really know why everyone else is complaining xD!
The self cracking issue is also scaring me alot, if the front screen cracks then the touch will go crazy/stop working. I've been reading this and a few of my friends have experienced this problem. ANYWAYS, a flip/wallet case is good as long as you have it closed, if you drop it on the front while you're using the phone then the impact will be directly on the screen because theres no edge over the glass u know! Silicone/rubber case that have an edge will be good if the phone lands on a flat surface because that edge will prevent the phone of landing right on its face.
What case do you think I should get? I will be having my phone in my front pocket and sometimes it gets tight, from my understanding the phone will crack if theres a tiny pressure on the phone it self, thats what the user reviews says at least.. -.-!
Btw, should I get a glass protector. You know, made out of glass, not plastic? As long as the phone lives ill be happy!! PLZ HELP! You probably know this but my explanations are a mess, Im sorry! :silly:

Phone doesnt unfold flat, or completely.

Hey guys so I bought my z fold 2 about a month ago on ebay. I got a pretty good deal on a Verizon variant because they unlock after 60 days. Well today I was playing with my phone and I realized that mine doesn't open up completely flat. There's a slight angle to it. I'm too scared to try trying to give it a little force to open all the way because I dont want to break something. I guess I can take it in to get repaired but it doesn't really affect it functionally. It just messes with my ocd bad that it's not completely flat when opened. It's just a slight angle you wouldnt even notice it unless you looked for it but I know it does indeed not open all the way because my mother in law and father in law both have the z fold 2 and theirs opens flat unlike mine.
Also I've had the most expensive spigen case on it since day 1 and I've been extremely careful to keep it clean and free of dirt and stuff so I'm not sure exactly what it is going on. My main concern is since I bought it on ebay I won't be able to use the warranty to get it fixed right? Or will I be able to. And if anyone has any ideas maybe I can fix it I'm open to suggestions. Thanks guys.

The angle you are mentioning is from the inside or outside after unfolding?
Mine is flat from the inside but when u put it on a desk both sides will not touch the table.
My screen isn't flat. It has a slight angle to it. Like say if the left half is flat. The right half curves upwards just slightly. Like I said it doesnt affect it functionaly but it kills my ocd knowing it should be straight.
So I was messing with my phone right now and I go to unfold it and it like snapped open completely. There's no angle anymore. It's flat. Idk what happened or what was wrong with it or what fixed it or if the problem will come back but I thought I'd let you guys know.

I've never heard of that. Are you sure it's not the case? If you remove case does it still not open all the way flat?

It doesn't do it anymore but yes when it was doing it even without the case it would not open all the way
Did you ever resolve this? I've had the same issue with my fold 3. I believe it opened 180 degrees when I first got it a fee weeks ago. Then I noticed one day that it only opens to about 175 now. Everything works, but it is annoying
I'm getting the same issue not sure what it is but I have a theory. I just came from outside where it is cold(Winter) then when I come into my home to unfold my zfold2, It wouldn't open all the way. By any chance was it winter in your area when this occurred?
Gotta replace your whole folding screen
Hi there! A guy on Reddit said that he managed to fix it using his vacuum cleaner. He kept on vacuuming the hinge several times a day for a week, and he finally managed to make it open 180º flat again. My wife has this same issue. I'm gonna try this.
Anyway, I feel like this foldable smartphones are still in "beta". There are too many issues with the screen (bubbles, vivid pixels, strange lines, dust inside the hinge mechanism...). And Samsung's service is absolutely poor. Would never recommend the Z Flip, even though it's a fast phone with nice cameras.
Fold the phone, then carefully slide a piece of a sticky note in the gap between the hinge and the front/rear Cover an move slowly towards the top of the phone. You may have to repeat this process several times until all dust, hair and other unwanted stuff comes out. Tested working on Z Fold2, where it is slightly easier due to the bigger gap and the Fold3. Both phones fully unfold again.
I keep doing this once in a while to keep the phones in this condition
i have the same issue as well, if you google it ... it seems to be quite a common issue .. I tried to use those can air blowers .. which didn't really help and my inner screen starts flicking after a few days
Sent the phone back to samsung and requested for them to clean the hinge, but was told I need to replace the entire hinge for about 550 USD.

I should have left mine alone cuz I made it worse paper is too weak and tears inside so I guess I made an expensive paperweight.
