Moto X Pure 32GB - $249 from Best Buy (Elite members only) - X Style (Pure) General

If you are in the USA and are a My Best Buy Elite member, you can get the Moto X Pure 32GB edition in Black only for $249 today only. Must be logged into your My Best Buy account and got to: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/motorol...lack/4345700.p?id=1219734737115&skuId=4345700
Note it does list the 16GB and 64GB versions, but I could not get a deal on those... no matter what I chose it only allowed me to add the 32GB model to my cart.
I just ordered one and will pickup in store later today, I am still fighting in my head a little between this one and the new Moto G 4th Gen with 64GB storage and 4GB RAM, the prices is pretty much the same since Amazon has the G4 with a $50 Amazon gift card for $299.
EDIT: This appears to be for longer than one day... still up as of 7/21

Good call, I'm in the same boat as you. Looking at the G plus and the Moto x Pure. Seems to me, the Pure has a better processor and less RAM. The Plus also loses the 2k display, and NFC most notably for me as opposed to the Moto. Tough call, for sure.

Really don't think RAM is an issue, or storage difference... I have the G3 right now and it has 2GB RAM with 16GB storage and I have never had any issues with apps closing in the background or running out of space since I have a 64GB microSD card for pics and music. The better processor, NFC, and 2K display are big pluses though, at the cost of battery life but really 3-4 hours SOT are enough for me most days and seems this phone does that pretty easily from what I have read.

I just ordered one too... I hope this does not over heats watching videos or does it?

Don't know... I pulled it out of the box and did 2 OTAs yesterday, and it got pretty warm. After it was current, I did a factory reset and cache wipe in recovery, and set it up with all my apps and stuff and it hardly got warm at all.
My advice... Skip all the setup, get it on WiFi and take all the OTA to get it current (mine took 2), then boot into recover and wipe cache, then do a full factory reset of user data + personalized data, reboot and set it up normally.

FYI... Still up for $249 this morning, guess it is more than a one day sale. Still Elite Member exclusive though, shows $349 if your logged out.

Not yet... I always wait at least a week to make sure there are no issues with the hardware so I can return it if necessary. After that, will see how it goes.

I believe available to everyone, not just Elite members, as of Friday.

That's an excellent deal on this phone. I got mine when it was released and I still like it, would buy it again.

Best 249 I spent in a while. Had a nexus 5x and broke the screen and honestly this phone is what the 5x should have been. The pure feels more like a nexus device than the 5x.

Switch or come from M8?

Anyone thinking about switching to the M8, due to root and not being able to control the battery? Or come from the M8 and have comments?

I'm coming here from a galaxy s4 and my s5 should be shipping but I was really on the fence between these two. But with this one no having root and everything I'm still not sure what I'm going to do. I'll probably just try out s5 and see if it's worth keeping even without root. What are your guys complaints on s5.

It's definitely better, I don't know why anyone would look to the M8 for an improvement if they're coming from the GS5.

I got the HTC One M8 the day it came out for Verizon and it is an incredible phone. Very fast and responsive, beautiful and sleek but coming from a galaxy s4 ( and thinking I was tired of touchwiz and Samsung phones) I couldn't get used to the volume controls in the other side and such. I switched to the S5 (burning my only exchange option) in the day 14th of using the M8 because of the wonderful screen, the better camera and the volume keys location besides that this phone feels sturdy and robust.
I dislike the vibration caused by the speakers and how different it sounds when compared to the M8. Also I see myself double tapping the screen frequently to turn on the phone. But the main difference is how slow this phone is compared to the M8 and even to my "old" galaxy S4. Despite all those facts I still love my S5 and if I had the chance wouldn't exchanged it back with the M8 even when I keep looking for apps to turn on my screen by double tapping and ways to make my phone faster.
I'd prefer to wait longer and if I don't get use to the slowness of this device I might give it to my wife in August (when her upgrade is available) and get myself a new phone such as the new LG G3, etc. I used to root and install lots of ROMs in my old S3 (now my wife's), and other phones but I did not root my S4 and did not miss it. I am OK with my S5 if it was faster and could double tap to turn on. This screen in amazing and I think I already got used to Samsung phones.
M8 is a great phone but to simple for me and the screen don't get close to the S5 in my humble opinion. Besides it's heavier and slippery that I thought I was going to drop it any minute, even when I can't get over its speed and responsiveness.

Im coming from S4 to S5 but due to not having root im taking it back today. Actually liked how snappy it is and smooth it works. Reason i need root is need to tether my unlimited data. Was actually considering M8 cause its roited and unlocked but i just dont know might wait for that Sony to come out soon.
I'm on the gs5 right now but I seem to be having little issues like the screen not coming back on after hitting power then trying to turn phone back on. I do this a lot I'm noticing now. I've had each galaxy phone Verizon has had and I still have the m7 gs4 gs3 and gs5 this has the best screen IMO and will miss camera. I'll hold one to the gs5 in hopes of the root but will have the m8 as my main phone for the time being. The little issues I have from the gs5 makes it feel like a downgrade from the m7.

Had the s5. Bought the m8 first, then got the S5 but returned it to keep the M8. No regrets. I didn't like how long it was to have to reach up to turn the screen off but I found a screen off widget do one handed use is perfect.

First off, i'm impressed with this thread so far. Everyone giving their opinions and not telling anyone what they should do or that something sucks.. It's refreshing.
I own both myself and the G2. While the displays on the G2 and M8 are great and are by no means slouches, the AMOLED on the S5 is just stunning. The best on a mobile device I've ever owned. I do enjoy the back and it feels well construed. I went ahead and added wireless hotspot to my unlimited plan for another $30. I did this for more than just having it on my S5, the only device I own that isn't rooted but wanted to throw that out there for those who are worried about it affecting their unlimited data and don't mind paying the extra cash.. It only brings my bill up to $120 so it's acceptable for me. I love my devices and usually hold on to all of them but with S5, I planned on giving it a test run as I'm in love with the M8 and will not be parting with it anytime soon. But, I didn't count on my love for the S5's display. I'll be keeping it as well.. At least until the G3 comes out. A Galaxy device is like money in the bank. Great resale value. Owning all the devices that I do and cruising all the threads, it's obviously, as we all know, personal preference. Just keep at the reviews and find what features are most valuable to you.
If all my devices were held hostage and I was only allowed to keep one, it would be none of the above. It would be my developer edition Moto X, that is covered by warranty while being unlocked, rooted and running a custom ROM based the stock Moto UI.
Sorry for the novel, I always end up rambling.

I am exchanging my s5 tomorrow for the m8. The s5 is awesome but there's a few things I'm really looking forward to on the m8...
1. Root/s-off. This is important to me. For me having a phone without root is like having a bike with flat tires. You can still ride it, but it sucks and the bike is so much more fun with pumped up tires.
2. On screen buttons. I do not like the physical home button, and since I am left handed I HATE that the back button is in the bottom right hand corner. It's a pain for me to reach. If I could switch the back and recents button on the s5 that would go a long way.
3. Front speakers. I watch a lot of stuff on my phone and the first time I heard the speakers on the m8 I knew I was probably gonna exchange my phone.
4. Double tap to turn on. I fell in love with this feature on the G2 (kinda wish I had just kept that phone. It's a great phone. Gave it to my sister in law though). Once you get used to this feature it's hard to not have it.
Things I'll miss about the s5:
1. The screen. It. is. Beautiful.
2. Water resistant. It's been a long time since I've dropped my phone in the toilet. I'm overdue for it to happen again.
3. Removable battery. I've always like this feature.
Any thoughts on the battery life of the m8 vs the s5? I know the battery life on the G2 was quite a bit better than on my s5. Is the battery on the m8 even worse?
Lastly - what's with the sim card on the s5 not being spring loaded? IT's a PAIN to take out.

You need more than root for tethering to work. FoxFi has stated that it will never work on KitKat. Hopefully somebody will find a way.

Good point. In my experience I have always rooted and then flashed a rom. Whether it was a stock rooted rom or a custom build like CM, tethering was always built in.

AOSP will probably not be an option. It was only possible on the S4 when it first came out. After updates, you could only flash TW based ROM's.

Coming from S4 MDK to the S5. My brother needed a replacement phone, so I made a commitment to give the S4 to him, knowing the S5 was going to be a PITA to root. Though we don't have root, I'd rather suffer with a locked down S5, than suffer more with a rooted M8. Can't wait for something else to come along and offer another alternative.

ORIGINAL POST:
I just came across this phone on T-Mobile's website, released earlier this week.
5.7" 720x1280 (258ppi) TFT screen
Quad core Snapdragon 400 1.2GHz, Adreno 305
2GB RAM
16GB built-in storage, microSD card up to 32GB
8MP camera, 1080p video
Android 4.4.2
LTE on band 4 and T-Mo's upcoming band 12 (and a couple other bands used by other companies in North America)
All for $252 off-contract (or $10.50/mo over 2 years).
I gotta say, I'm intrigued by this new phone. There's some obvious drawbacks/shortcuts; it's big for the screen size, the camera isn't fantastic, the screen is a bit dim/bland (according to a cnet review), no NFC, etc. But it's got a frugal, adequate processor with a big battery, runs a lightly skinned, nearly stock Android, has LTE (and T-Mo's LTE speeds here are amazing) and best of all, 2GB RAM, so it shouldn't lag or stutter.
I'm somewhat interested in this phone for myself, but I'll probably just wait to get a Nexus Shamu. But a friend (who's broke) of mine wants a bigass phone to watch Netflix on and play some games and emulators. Obviously the lowish pixel density is a drawback, but for what he'd use it for, it's perfectly fine.
For $252, this seems like an amazing bargain. Where else are you going to find a phablet with LTE at this price? But I'm not very familiar with ZTE. Build quality, longevity, software stability, updates, etc, are all in question for me.
Has anyone picked one up yet, or checked one out at a T-Mobile store? What have been your impressions on other ZTE devices?

I am receiving mine in the mail tomorrow. My main concern is how to root the darn thing. Ive heard that all ZTE phones ship with an unlocked bootloader, and i've hear they ship locked. Theres almost nothing development wise for this phone and i obviously understand it just came out, but it seems ZTE is not a developer friendly company. Can't even find anything developer related on ANY of their sites. I wonder if any of those 1 click root apks or scripts can root the damn thing. Only problem is, if it bricks, how do you fix?

for $250, you can't beat it.
It's about as fast as my nexus 5. Battery is *easy* 2 days. Build plastics are better than samsungs.
Zero bloat. 2 or 3 useful added apps, pretty much stock AOSP.
Screen is only 720p, but that's fine for most stuff.

They give it 3/5 stars. CNET doesn't really weigh their review scores though, at least with the actual rating - you have to read the article to see if they say anything about good value for the money. On another site, for example, phonearena, they'd probably give it a higher score because they take into account the cost and the intended market (they give the Moto E and G 2013 a 9/10, higher than the Moto X's, because despite being lesser phones, they present better value).
So far, this is the only actual review (apart from "hands-on") from a proper website that I've found. There's a bunch of customer reviews already on T-Mobile's website, and it seems to be liked by all that have purchased it.
Has anyone managed to root this beast> I have had mine for a few days and I have tried several methods unsuccessfully. I am not anywhere near as good as some of the people on developing for android on XDA but I can follow directions when they are presented clearly. The one click route doesn't seem to work with this phone and the universal guide doesn't work either. ANyone have advice?

I have also tried several different root methods such as FramaRoot and TowelRoot. Neither has worked. I doubt anything is going to work but ill try a few more things and see where I get.
OK phone
Its an OK phone by far fat, fast and heavy. Charge cord that comes out of the box is way to short easy fix. Picky with cords if male cable is to long the tip won't sit in and come off.
When in bed due to connection location is hard to use, bottom left corner iterating spot.
Phone gets heavy after a while. Crashes here and there unexplained reasons.
However, its insanely fast. Never lagged apps just crash but phone keeps running.
Has 16 gb internal and 32 GB SD = actual memory shown. 40 GB total 11 internal and 29 SD (memory is not always actual). No battery change slot but this thing lasts all day through torture of games, watching movies and surf the web. Due to big size it does need more care. Since its so new its hard to find online cases or screen protectors for it. Had to go to the mall to get a customs made screen protector. Sound is good but not the best quality speaker around. Good phone just don't drop it or sit on it looks durable but since plastic feels like I can break it with my own hands in half. Definitely don't try the iPhone 6 bend test on this.
We need to find a adb root exploit since no apks out there yet that are compatible with this phone, unless geohot updates his good luck.

Yeah I tried geohot's towelroot. If he doesn't update it, the only luck we will have with that root tool is to edit the modstrings ourselves. Not going to lie, thats a little over my head/pay grade.

OK, it *appears* that I have root but I'm not sure I actually do. It installed ChainsDD superuser and ask if I wanted to flash recovery (don't do that for sure...) But titanium and chainfire super su both say no root. Sorry!
Try looking up philz unified recovery. It has loki tool kit included if boot loader not unlocked. I believe he had for almost all devices already. With that you should be able to do more customization. I believe safestrap recovery another Option. If his bootloader is unlocked then he should be able to user any custom recovery he wants. Root exploit by hiikezoe,open1your1eyes0 ,DooMlorD,PWM978.. is a great Orion to gain root access for most devices.

Im having a problem actually obtaining root. It tells me im rooted and superuser has been installed but i have no real root access and all my root checker app is telling me im not rooted. Can you verify your root status and also just give a brief run down of how you obtained it.

Some root exploit utilities are calling this the ZTE (Draconis). Google search yields nothing for that.
I have tried so many rooting methods and exhausted Google. I don't know where to go from here.

Sorry all. As hoodred mentions it was a false positive. It did appear that things were working (and I got excited). You will definitely *not* get root with burrito3.

Selling for the new Nexus 5x 6p?

Anyone else considering selling their S6 for one of the new Nexus phones being announced on Tuesday?
I would consider giving up the camera for vanilla android and the ability to do what I want with my device. The lag from time to time I get on CleanRom is driving me nuts as of late as well.
I might consider it once I get a chance to see it in person. The lag on my S6 has gotten terrible lately and I'm not sure what is causing it.

You might take a look at this. I think it could be wider scale than the S6.

I tried it and it seemed to help. Could be placebo effect. I'm not sure how much service.jar's vary from phone to phone but I am on OE2. Here is a copy of mine. It goes in the system/framework folder.

Stock and rooted. I just can't believe how it is getting so bad. I was thinking about wiping it clean and taking the updates even. It's that bad.
Driving me crazy too. Phone is great otherwise. I do like me some vanilla Android though. That 6P even has one of Samsung's latest AMOLED panels. Nice. I'm going to wait a bit but I might end up selling my S6 and trying out that 6P.

I ordered a 64GB 6P within 15 minutes of the official announcement. So cool as this phone can be, TouchWiz on an unrooted device is making the experience more and more annoying. Plus, with vzw dragging their feet and USAA still "evaluating" Samsung Pay, the remaining features aren't enough to keep me on board.
I ordered the 6p. Can't stand touchwiz or the lag.

I like the new nexus and the moto x but I can't give up the ir blaster and fingerprint and samsung pay is going to be freaking awesome. I might look into buying a tmobile s6 or note 5 and flash a rom on it if it can be bootloader unlocked and work on verizon.

I created a bunch of order for a 5x and kept canceling them cause I wasn't sure about it. After reading some of the threads in the 5x forum I'm glad I decided to keep the s6.
Seems like build quality is hit or miss, battery life is way less and tons of lag along with terrible video due to no ois.
I'll keep my s6 thanks.
I really like my S6. I'm rooted and I really love the camera. However, I want to be able to use Android pay or Samsung pay. I almost never carry cash and I always my credit card. I also want updates in a timely fashion.
After viewing some of the photos from the 6p, I'm excited to get the phone. My only hang up maybe with the size.

Went with the 5x from my s6 and I'm really glad I did. Sure the camera and screen aren't quite as good, but I'm pretty happy with it. 1080p is plenty for a phone and with LCD I don't need to worry about burn in. So glad to be back in non locked down territory. It's pretty sad that even though the 5x has 1gb less RAM, it can hold more apps without redrawing them. If you're on the fence about switching, go for it. You can always return it to Google within 15 days if you don't like it.

Potential Galaxy Note 5 Owner?!

I have a Sony Xperia Z1s and I'm coming up to my 2 year mark and looking to make an upgrade to a new device. I was hoping T-Mobile would carry the Sony Xperia Z5 but it seems they have no plans to carry it or being extremely quiet about it. I'm interested in the Galaxy Note 5 but I'm just concerned about a few things before making my purchase and hoping some Note 5 owners could help.
1. Does the Galaxy Note 5 have poor RAM management issues especially when multitasking after 5 or 6 apps are opened some will close in the background and have to be restarted over?
2. Can the T-Mobile Note 5 Variant be rooted (unlocked bootloader) without any issues?
3. How would you rate the battery life?
4. Should I wait for the holidays for some new promotions?
Well from my take
1. Yes TouchWiz has aggressive ram management, so.app reload happens. But if you are comfortable with rooting and playing with script, there is a tweak that was given how to fix the aggressive ram management or make it better I should say.
2 . Yes it can be rooted I believe the bootloader can be unlocked. Of course Knox will be tripped voiding you warranty.
3. I say it's great for me, average about 5-6hrs of screen on time. It varies from person to person.
4. That's a personal choice you will have to make. Holiday seasons do come with some.Great deals but who knows what will be this year's deals.
Sent from my White Note 5 Monster
1. The ram preformance is great. It rarely lags and is very fast. App reloads do happen. I tested out Instagram, Playstore, Messages, Phone, Facebook, and a couple more. I left them running for a bit while I played a game and went back to the exact same spot.
2. Root is very simple. It's pretty much 1 click of a button and then waiting 5 minutes.
3. Battery life depends on how often you use it. Im in school and use my phone a good amount. I usually get out at 2:30 with 60ish% and then at the end of the day Im left with aroung 20-30%. That counts watching youtube videos everyday, on snapchat, instagram, playing a couple games, ect. (I do have a stock deodexed rom though)
4. Depends on your budget. T-Mobile has recently came out with some great promotions lately and who knows if they will with the note 5 anytime soon.

Thanks for the input guys appreciate it! Those were my biggest concerns and I think I may wait till atleast Black Friday to see if they have any deals for the Note 5.
So only when you unlock bootlader tripping knox will void the warranty not from just rooting?
From my understanding yes
Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk
If you follow the guides on here as to get root, you will trip knox. I'm not sure about the bootloader, but if you install a custom recovery it's tripped. Basically in order to flash anything, except Samsung ROMs using Odin, you'll trip it. I wonder if there even is a root-injected stock kernel that could flash in Odin? I don't think there is.
But, the Note5 is a beast stock. I had the Z1s, and the Z2. Besides just being older, I'm really a fan of the Note5. I don't think you'd miss your rooted Z1s at all with a new Note in your hands.
Just get one. Best phone out there.

Ok thats alittle disappointing was looking forward to being able to root it and not void the warranty on a $700 smartphone. Yeah I played with one in the T-Mobile store its definitely a top notch phone I'm definitely going to get it once the Holiday's come around.

I'm dying to get it, I can't wait!!!
So once you trip Knox it is irreversible? I would like to keep my warranty for as long as possible just in case something goes wrong with the phone. If its irreversible then I might have to wait a few months before rooting it just to be safe.
I'm looking at buying this phone for my wife's Christmas present. To my understanding it ships with an unlocked bootloader. ... My main concern is using it on straight talk.

For what it's worth, I've never heard of T-Mobile checking knox for a warranty exchange. I've exchanged with knox tripped myself as well as upgraded through jump with no issues. That's not to say you'll have the same experience though. As for app reloads, I notice it less on the note 5 than I did on my S6 edge.
I always send my phones in a soft bricked state on purpose. Never had an issue.

Strange. Nothing coming up in the UK.
Those of you who got the OTA - can you capture&share OTA file or make&upload TWRP backup (of Boot and System Image partitions)?
Thanks!

What difference do you find between 1.62 and 1.15? Better battery? More second screen functions?
For me, better signal and stability, phone more fast.
The app grid allow more app to show per line. Nothing else.

Wonder why no such update for the US and Asia especially Taiwan since normally it gets update first.
Anyway after updating sense home, the grid option 3x4 is gone and now I have 4x5 and 5x6. Is it what you have?

Yep exactly the same here CW unlocked., except my 401.4 -> 401.13 was 267mb... interesting.. ... Since we have been stuck on 1.09 since release ... UK users should be seeing what the US got in 1.15, such as...
Better 2nd'ary display functions and notifications, better battery, Sense home update., but I wish theyd do something with "Sense Companion" in UK, something like Bixby... or just anything really... Mine just sits on one screen saying "Your cards are deleted or out of date", and occasionally asks me to measure my steps, or give me trafficx warnings.. but nothing happens... .Wierd
Ive also gone for a full wipe..... factory reset/cache wipe through recovery, as both updates came to about 900mb... pretty big....
Anyway good to see some "HTC" love coming to the UK after 2 months of release
Thanks HTC
Hi all,
I also received this update a day ago now on my UK unlocked Sim free Black U Ultra and a short while after completing the update I got a message from EE as that's whose network my sim is from and I now have WiFi calling on my phone. That really is the only difference I have noticed on my device so far as up to now everything has been working perfectly and my second display has never had any of the issues some mention. I absolutely love this device and don't have a single regret about choosing this over any of the other so called better flagships or not waiting for the HTC 11 either. The fuss made about it not having the latest Snapdragon really is a non issue for me as I just don't believe the differences are really going to be that big or noticeable in real world use I must admit the fact I manged to get a two day old device at a good price helped but I would of paid full price and still been happy. Also battery life for me has been brilliant and as I charge it once it reaches around 35% it charges really fast to. This replaced my just over 3 year old M8 and for its been a great and worthwhile upgrade.
