New update for European devices 1.62.401.1 - HTC U Ultra Guides, News, & Discussion

I just received an OTA for my Ultra, which also brings the May security update.
Version is 1.62.401.1

The may security update is also included, for those that might be wondering.

Strange. Nothing coming up in the UK.
Those of you who got the OTA - can you capture&share OTA file or make&upload TWRP backup (of Boot and System Image partitions)?
Thanks!

Apart from the May security update, what differences does this update bring to the phone? Is it 7.1.1 now?

What difference do you find between 1.62 and 1.15? Better battery? More second screen functions?

For me, better signal and stability, phone more fast.
The app grid allow more app to show per line. Nothing else.

Wonder why no such update for the US and Asia especially Taiwan since normally it gets update first.
Anyway after updating sense home, the grid option 3x4 is gone and now I have 4x5 and 5x6. Is it what you have?

Option 3x4 disappear.
And here it was after the ota.

I don't see any difference whatsoever. My Ultra was plenty fast and stable before the update too.

Yep exactly the same here CW unlocked., except my 401.4 -> 401.13 was 267mb... interesting.. ... Since we have been stuck on 1.09 since release ... UK users should be seeing what the US got in 1.15, such as...
Better 2nd'ary display functions and notifications, better battery, Sense home update., but I wish theyd do something with "Sense Companion" in UK, something like Bixby... or just anything really... Mine just sits on one screen saying "Your cards are deleted or out of date", and occasionally asks me to measure my steps, or give me trafficx warnings.. but nothing happens... .Wierd
Ive also gone for a full wipe..... factory reset/cache wipe through recovery, as both updates came to about 900mb... pretty big....
Anyway good to see some "HTC" love coming to the UK after 2 months of release
Thanks HTC

Hi all,
I also received this update a day ago now on my UK unlocked Sim free Black U Ultra and a short while after completing the update I got a message from EE as that's whose network my sim is from and I now have WiFi calling on my phone. That really is the only difference I have noticed on my device so far as up to now everything has been working perfectly and my second display has never had any of the issues some mention. I absolutely love this device and don't have a single regret about choosing this over any of the other so called better flagships or not waiting for the HTC 11 either. The fuss made about it not having the latest Snapdragon really is a non issue for me as I just don't believe the differences are really going to be that big or noticeable in real world use I must admit the fact I manged to get a two day old device at a good price helped but I would of paid full price and still been happy. Also battery life for me has been brilliant and as I charge it once it reaches around 35% it charges really fast to. This replaced my just over 3 year old M8 and for its been a great and worthwhile upgrade.

Official AT&T OTA update coming when?

Does anyone know when can we expect AT&T OTA update for HTC ONE X? I am very tempted to update to 1.85 but it will make me reinstall all the apps (including some corporate ones - for which it would be pain to get the corporate IT to cooperate), but I am holding off hoping that official OTA must not be that far out?
I am a very recent new customer to AT&T so I don't really know what is AT&T's track record regarding OTA? Do they do regularly all the time? Or, is it more like, once if you are lucky?
Thanks,
Osho
OTA AT&T
As a long time AT&T customer, Cingular before that (AT&T by another name) & Bell South Mobility (A division of AT&T). I can tell you that the wheels of a OTA firmware update grind extraordinarily slow. It will happen but there's no telling when.
If we knew, it would be plastered all over the tech blogs (Engadget, Android Central...).
yeh att drags their feet on this stuff..
If AT&T pushes an OTA update, will it detect if your bootloader is unlocked? Should you relock it before downloading the update?
1.85.502 ruu
Just as an aside, I've been running the leaked 1.85.502 ROM that is available and that the OP mentioned. I have had zero issues with it. The WiFi seems to be fixed, battery life seems to be improved and the system seems more responsive overall. As always when it comes to a leaked ROM... YMMV & FAYOR!!!

Does AT&T sell phones with different firmwares than what is the latest OTA update for the same phones that may have been sold earlier? This sounds soooo wrong at so many levels. Why 'punish' your first customers?

I guess it's possible that the batch of phones that were delayed in customs could have the new ROM on it... but... It makes me feel better (if this is actually the case) that the 1.85.502 ROM will be the next OTA update. There is a difference between the OTA ROM release and the RUU ROM, the latter clean installing the phone and the OTA not. Personally, I prefer a clean install / wipe over an incremental / update install. Less issues in the long run.

Nobody that has bought the phone after the customs hold up has had anything but 1.85 on their phone. I think it's legit, and part of the reason there was a delay.

I tend to agree. Don't know if it was every definitely proven. But it seemed to me that on the HTC Flyer tablet people who updated to Honeycomb (from Gingerbread) using the OTA had pretty severe performance issues, while those that updated through "unofficial means" (RUU, custom ROMs) had great performance (including myself).

That thread was discussing the upcoming ota and being ready for it.
This thread is a post update discussion. Also that thread was cleverly and so descriptively named 'update'. I hope to keep this one uncluttered and on topic.
Plus this one is actually in the proper location. So you should probably go troll somewhere else that doesn't make you look ignorant.

I hope improvements to 'camera stability' means improvements for when the camera:
isn't playing nice with multi-tasking,
isn't sleeping properly,
might be the cause of phone over heating,
might be the cause of random reboots,
might be the source of battery drain...
15:00 EST. "There are no updates available for your phone."
Chill out everyone. They have a 2-3 week window to roll out the update. It is Monday morning, and you know how Monday's are. I wouldn't expect to start seeing anything until later today or even tomorrow.

While I get what you're saying, it's hard for me to remain calm considering how erratic my signal is. Sometimes the phone just decides it has no sim card even though it does. Data hanging? Yep, I got that. Sporadic text notifications or lack thereof? Check. Having my phone function just as a phone would ease my nerves a little bit but as it stands it does it's own thing and it seriously affects my day to day.

to be honest I hope it wont be that similar. I am on 1.78, sim free phone, and it reboots sporadicly when switching from hsdpa to wifi.... I am crossing my fingers that the new radio included in 1.84 will solve this.

The wording on the website regarding manual download immediately is incorrect. You can only do that in the case where maybe you accidentally dismissed the OTA notification. Thoughts on 4.04 update.

So now that we got the OTA of 4.04, what do you like about it so far? I enjoy how they allowed us to map the Recent Apps button to open the menu. Wifi performance is way better now. But I may have missed things that were fixed or added. Let's hear your thoughts on the new update.

To me the most important thing is to fix the radio so that I don't have to use flight mode or reboot the phone a few times a day in order to get LTE data connection going. So far so good but needs a few more days to evaluate.

That's probably the way to go. After doing the update with the ota or ruu you will have to use fastboot to flash boot images when going to a custom rom. I tried to flash the Advanced Reboot menu & Quick Settings and it hung up after the boot animation. If I wasn't so lazy I could try and push everything with adb and see if that would work. Also I don't know if Cleanrom 4.5 uses the same kernel or not but you will have to flash the new radio that came in the 2.20 update separately and for me the new radio does make a difference. WiFi and cell are definitely better! Multitasking is as good now as it was for me previously when I did the mod to the init.qcom.post_boot.sh file. I was very happy with the way the phone ran before but now all the animations are smoother and faster, everything opens up faster, noticeable increase in performance. For me quadrant went from 4500 to 5300!!! I'm really liking the remap of the multitasking button especially since I like to use the kindle app on the phone. Sweet! Another thing is it seems to me the capacitive buttons are dimmer than they were before but I was using a different kernel with init.d support so I could make them dimmer, I vaguely remember them being much brighter at one time. For now, there are going to be issues trying to flash different things in recovery but if you have and can use adb that might be an option. Sooo.... all in all I don't regret doing the ota update. I like to stay with the stock os but seriously cleaned up and with a few mods. The only thing I miss is Extended Quick Settings, which isn't a big deal and the mod to revert the situation with links does not work anymore. I even got wifi tethering working! I'm happy with the way the phone is now.

If your bootloader is unlocked before you do the ota you can then unlock afterward and get root. You will have to go into fastboot and lock your bootloader before doing the update and you will need the "Unlock_code.bin" so you can flash that in fastboot after doing the update. There are some very easy instructions in this thread. So you can get root after doing this update, I am rooted and unlocked. It's just harder to flash custom roms now but it can be done.
Forgot to mention two things in my previous post. I now see an additional 150-200 MB of ram than what was available before the update. And it seems like auto-brightness is working better. I think the powers that be did a heck of a job on this update!

Auto Rotate Issues w/ latest update?

Have you tried backing up and saving your stuff and then doing a full factory reset to see if that fixes your problems?

Thought about it, but at this point it seems easier just to reboot the phone.
Of note though, the rotation failure seems to happen after using navigation...possibly. I'll report back if I can determine certain apps or actions trigger the failure.

I don't get why they even bothered with the sensors and auto rotate because there was nothing wrong with them to begin with!! I guess Verizon hasn't ever heard of "if it ain't broke, don't mess with it".. This is why I don't like updating anyway!

I don't understand it either. I know I'll be leaving the Samsung brand on my next upgrade! My wife bought a note 7 and went through that fiasco. After returning it and getting an S7 she hasn't seen a security patch since. She is sitting on Samsung's newest flagship and it's on October's security patch. Now my note 5 is flaky thanks to updates to things that were working just fine. I'm done, I'm hoping the next Pixel phone is everything I want it to be.

I've pretty much had it with Verizon at this point myself and I especially don't like being told what I can and can't do with the phone that I paid 800 dollars for in one payment only to find out it's all locked the hell down and Verizon won't even offer those of us who do want to mod our phones a way to unlock the bootloader.. It's like buying a car and being told where you can and cannot drive it.. Plain stupid!!

Once tax return comes in I'm looking for new phones and carrier. Been thinking about at&t prepaid and a couple OnePlus 3Ts for the wife and I.

I've already got my T-Mobile sim cards because I was testing a few carriers out and it seems like T-Mobile has the fastest speed, even beats Verizon which is sad! Basically I'm just waiting to see what the S8 is going to be like but it's not going to get bought if it's another locked down piece of junk!!

Yeah. Unfortunately in my area, T-Mobile isn't so hot. AT&T and Verizon are king.

So far so good, for my husband and I.

Sorry to keep bugging you but could you please check in your Settings then About Device then scroll down to Android security patch level and let us know what it states (for example January 1, 2017)? OR in the same section, maybe you can also check what the Android Version is... It would be nice if you got the Nougat update/7.x!
If you have the February 1, 2017 patch then that's what most of us are waiting for to fix these issues! If you are still on the January patch then we need to look for another answer/fix.
Thanks in advance for your help!

It looks like BPL4 (Dec) broke it and BQA1 (Jan) did not fix it.
I'm having the same issues with the screen-off during call and auto-rotate issues (I'm running BQA1).

Let's hope C1audia received the February update and that would appear to have fixed the problems. Waiting on her response...
