Thoughts on 4.04 update. - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

So now that we got the OTA of 4.04, what do you like about it so far? I enjoy how they allowed us to map the Recent Apps button to open the menu. Wifi performance is way better now. But I may have missed things that were fixed or added. Let's hear your thoughts on the new update.

To me the most important thing is to fix the radio so that I don't have to use flight mode or reboot the phone a few times a day in order to get LTE data connection going. So far so good but needs a few more days to evaluate.

I never get that problem cause WA including Seattle doesn't get LTE
But that is important of fixing the radio.

I literally thanked HTC out loud when I found out that that ugly black bar is now optional. And I really like the way the home scrolls now. Its more smooth. And I like the slightly different browser. One more thing is the more responsive and snappy feel.

I noticed that vibration mode is off on calculator when it is turned off in keyboards settings. Very helpful bug fix for those who use it more often.

-Menu/overflow button is very appreciated!
-Wi-Fi seems the same... awful range.
*Has anyone done a factory reset after the OTA? I did and now there's an issue disabling Google Books & Movies. I keep disabling them & they keep coming back anytime I reboot. All the other bloat can be disabled ok (though we still can't AT&T Ready2Go).

WiFi range is a lot greater and I have almost 150 MB more RAM available.

I still haven't received the update. Is that normal?

That's probably the way to go. After doing the update with the ota or ruu you will have to use fastboot to flash boot images when going to a custom rom. I tried to flash the Advanced Reboot menu & Quick Settings and it hung up after the boot animation. If I wasn't so lazy I could try and push everything with adb and see if that would work. Also I don't know if Cleanrom 4.5 uses the same kernel or not but you will have to flash the new radio that came in the 2.20 update separately and for me the new radio does make a difference. WiFi and cell are definitely better! Multitasking is as good now as it was for me previously when I did the mod to the init.qcom.post_boot.sh file. I was very happy with the way the phone ran before but now all the animations are smoother and faster, everything opens up faster, noticeable increase in performance. For me quadrant went from 4500 to 5300!!! I'm really liking the remap of the multitasking button especially since I like to use the kindle app on the phone. Sweet! Another thing is it seems to me the capacitive buttons are dimmer than they were before but I was using a different kernel with init.d support so I could make them dimmer, I vaguely remember them being much brighter at one time. For now, there are going to be issues trying to flash different things in recovery but if you have and can use adb that might be an option. Sooo.... all in all I don't regret doing the ota update. I like to stay with the stock os but seriously cleaned up and with a few mods. The only thing I miss is Extended Quick Settings, which isn't a big deal and the mod to revert the situation with links does not work anymore. I even got wifi tethering working! I'm happy with the way the phone is now.

If your bootloader is unlocked before you do the ota you can then unlock afterward and get root. You will have to go into fastboot and lock your bootloader before doing the update and you will need the "Unlock_code.bin" so you can flash that in fastboot after doing the update. There are some very easy instructions in this thread. So you can get root after doing this update, I am rooted and unlocked. It's just harder to flash custom roms now but it can be done.
Forgot to mention two things in my previous post. I now see an additional 150-200 MB of ram than what was available before the update. And it seems like auto-brightness is working better. I think the powers that be did a heck of a job on this update!

I guess the next question I have is the simplest way to take what I have now and move it to a GB install. My main goal is to keep all my SMS and MMS, and have an easy time reinstalling my purchased apps. I was planning on going with the latest ZEUS, it has bluetooth, dock audio output, and, the camera works I assume Thanks for taking the time to answer the main question, helping me with the SMS/MMS storage/recovery would be wonderful if you have a sec

You are getting ONE day+ with a massive use?
didn't fix it for me
My Wifi connection is solid but every couple of hours the wifi gets disconnected and reconnects. I have trickdroid v5.0 for tmobile. I beleive I tried the v4.4 for the international one s and it had the same issue. I did go thru all of the steps (bootloader unlock, root, fastboot script, and recovery installation of rom). I did it twice for good measure. i still have the same problem.
On a side note I'm not sure if this is related but my friend with the exact same tmo one s and I were doing speed tests. He Consistently got twice my speeds. We both have the same tmobile service and were at the location using the same server. He was using stock ROM and rooted.

I tried updating to the latest tmo radio and still no luck. I flashed the LeeDroid rom and I got high speeds, even though I flashed the newest radio on the Leedroid rom too. But I'm getting the same speeds as my friend is on his stock rom.
Also another issue I noticed with the tmo trickdroid v5 is that it doesn't recognise a (wired) headset for sounds or mic. Did anyone else have this issue?
update: the headset works fine on leedroid fyi

[ Q ] Friend just rooted my phone. Browser annoyance. One finger zoom?????

A friend rooted my phone today since i don't know how. He said he left its rooted but nothing is flashed as far as roms. While browsing on my web now something very annoying is happening. Wether in landscape or portrait mode if i drag my finger on the edge of the screen on either side in zooms in and out instead of scrolling....is there a function that turns this off. It is driving me crazy.
Rooting wouldnt cause that to happen. What browser are you using? the stock one?
I believe it's a function under the motion settings
Sent from my VS920 4G using xda app-developers app
Yes i am using the stock browser. I did not see anything in the motion settings that revolves around what is happening. I also did not see anything in the browser settings that enables/disables it either.
The edge zooms in and out while touching the middle scrolls up and down. Tapping the screen also zooms in and out.

I dl the official jellybean update when it officially came out from vzw. I was not rooted then and i did not notice this at all. I only noticed it today after i was rooted. It is really annoying as my fingers mostly scroll along the edges of the screen. I use pinch to zoom and double tap. Is there a way to take it off? It is driving me nuts.
No you can't take it off as you can not change how an app uses a smartphone's touch functions. If its that big of a deal breaker for you then I don't know what to tell you as all apps have a set way to utilize the touch screen and not one of them have a way to alter the touch screen only the app itself. Also with all mobile phones there is no touch screen setting so if you want to drag your fingers up and down on the edge of the screen to scroll a website you will have to find a browser that utilizes that function.

[Q] Stuck with no root, what's next?

I am not the only one on this topic. I have come to a conclusion that my device (Razr maxx HD 9.30.1.XT926) won't be getting any root. Alright, what is next? What sorts of recommendations do you guys have to improve my phone? Faster Google Now response, tips and tricks? Anything to hold off till the unscheduled (at least to the public) 4.4 update.
Thanks!
Honestly, the only advantage root has vs unrooted so far as this phone goes is the complete removal of bloatware vs disabling it all. You can still disable any and all bloatware by holding the app int he app drawer, opening the app info, uninstall any updates if the option is present, then ultimately disable the junk. This will stop from phone resources being used to crapware on your phone, and will also help with the speed the phone, and of rebooting if you need to.
Lacking root, you're unable to utilize something like GravityBox to give little tweaks to your phone (one I'm fond of being the "Clear All" button in the recent apps drawer) or the Xposed Installer. Not the end of the world; GravityBox and Xposed doesn't have much outside of small quality of life tweaks for your phone. You'll live.
You are still able to install APK's from unknown sources. You are still able to use Nova Launcher to replace the disgusting Verizon phone icons (Phone, SMS, Contacts, Camera, etc) with stick KitKat icons. In fact, Nova Launcher can make your home screen and app launcher look and feel like KitKat. It's honestly very close to having KitKat itself.
Google Now is still very strong, even without the "always listening" from the home screen. My phone is rooted, but I have made no changes that would affect or enhance Google Now simply because I haven't felt the need. Mentioned above, disabling a bunch of crapware that Verizon puked onto this phone might have unforeseen performance benefits. Do your best.
Otherwise, I - like you - am eagerly awaiting KitKat to land on our phones. Having run CyanogenMod, XenonHD, BeanStalk, it's blatantly obvious that this phone is more than capable of handling KitKat without stutter. With Motorola opening their eyes about unlocked bootloaders, one can hope that after KitKat, custom ROMs will also be ported to the RAZR without all this stupid bootloader fuss.
Thank you for playing the waiting game with me.
Try out this launcher.
Be sure and choose "just once" when choosing it as home!!
A hit of home will allow the blur home back.
A safe boot will fix if you mess up, btw.
That is until you are sure it works.

I actually use Nova Prime. It has really given me some fresh air into my phone. I also love that they make your phone look closer to kit kat.
My main desire for a root is the chance to try out a kit kat ROM, due to the fact that it has such a low RAM requirement.

The 4.4 ROMs require an unlocked bootloader, so root wouldn't really help you out there.

What he said. You're already in a spot where you cannot root.
You need root, but cannot root.
You need and unlocked bootloader to flash a rom, but you need to root first. Since you're on 9.30, you absolutely cannot root or unlock yet.

Thanks!

Try using Nova Launcher. Its pretty fast. Also try Power Widgets from play store.
If you like stock one then don't put too many icons and widgets on home screens. You can also try to disable animations in developers options.
If you are using Chrome turn the sync off. I find it to be more responsive that way. Google now can be slow because of search history. Try cleaning up a little bit. :good:
I disabled Google Now since I never need it and it smooths out the phone a bunch. Google Now bogs this phone down. Try it!

Guess what! Hell must have frozen over because those with locked devices can now root on the latest OTA.

Happy days for people with locked devices.

This looks promising! People within the thread are noting success. It's a bit iffy since there are no screenshots. but I don't have reason beyond that to doubt this too will work. No harm in trying I feel.
Up until now, I had simply been denying the "Update" popup until 4.4 came around. This sounds like a welcome fix!
I'll try and report results when I get off work later today.

I can't attest that it works because my phone is unlocked, so I don't have to resort to exploits, but I've ready numerous threads that state it works. It's using an exploit within the Linux Kernel.
Sorry folks, I've been running into a snag.
I tried to apply the 9.30 update, but it doesn't take. Preliminary Googling tells me that because I've already rooted the phone, I need to flash it back to complete stock through RSD Lite or something of the sort. The internet tells me that a simple factory reset doesn't do it.
So I either do flash it back to stock, or I wait (sigh) until 4.4 comes out for the razr hd.

You must use voodoo to unroot during the ota process. Then you will not need the new root exploit...
See my stickys for voodoo. You must get SS off your HD too.

Thanks again for the help. I was using my computer actually, just me being blind I guess.
You mentioned that "SS" must not be on my phone. Could you clarify what you meant?

Just good guess on my part, never confirmed that it's presence will bork the ota but you would be wise to unenable it reboot & uninstall it.
