Galaxy s7 930u root - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

Hello,
Trying to find information about this specific model, This seems to be the most appropriate forum to post questions.
I have the Samsung factory unlocked version 930u. It may be possible to unlock the bootloader using OEM unlock, although I haven't tried yet.
Is there a method to root this device? It's a Snapdragon version, not Exynos. All information I could find about root was about the 930F with Exynos. Before voiding the warranty, I need to get all the info at least.
Thanks.

The same method as all carrier variants. The G930U is the same phone as the variants where the only difference is not being controlled by the carrier, otherwise same firmware essentially.

Ok, so I should be able to flash Chainfire 930f firmware on it?

No, you can't flash Exynos firmware. Only US firmwares. You flash the Engineer kernel which is rooted. The, currently, only root method for US variants

Thanks for pointing that out.
So, first unlock the bootloader through oem unlock, then flash this file. Do you have a link to it, make sure I get the right one?
Thank you very much for your help!

The bootloader is still locked. The OEM Unlock in developer options is simply a toggle to allow the bootloader to be unlocked, which it can't currently.

It says G930A but it's the same method across all US variants.

Thank you!

I have a problem when trying to root this device samsung S7 930U. I tried 3 versions of Odin, 3 usb cables ( samsung original) and all the USB ports in my PC, the one in the front and 4 in the back. I always get 2 results. Or it stays "SetUp Connection" forever...or just FAIL! Auth. I don't know what else to try.
Im trying to root the device just only to change the IMEI number, since I can't make it work in my country in Southamerica.
Already check in other posts and other forums...no results yet. But I won't give up
Any ideas?
Thanks guys in advance! :good:

If you're on MDL and want MF3, I recommend rooting and installing a custom recovery while you can, and then flashing the neutered MF3 update. Root is in the General section, many MF3 ROM's can be found in Development sections. Make sure to read the whole OP in whichever you go to before doing anything.

I just really want the update so I can open the extra LTE bands. Also the Apps to SD would be nice. The Rooted roms dont fix the LTE bands. Also i dont care about rooting. Looks like CM is going to be coming out with a non root flash method for thier roms anyway.
You can unlock them... You don't need the update. Google.

Yes, you may be able to just flash the MF3 modem after a factory reset. That would hopefully resolve your current issues and open up the LTE bands.

The extra bands are unlocked through the service menus. Not through a modem. If that were the case, the update would unlock your device for any GSM carrier. AT&T is not going to do that.

Yeah AT&T opened up access to lte band 2 and 5 with the mf3 on their modem. Probably for international oversea purposes/partnership?

If you want the MF3 rom and/or kernel, check out this thread. If you want just the modem (baseband), check out the latest addition, File #11 in that same thread.
Otherwise, I think this thread has been hijacked enough, and the original purpose has been served, in my opinion. The MF3 source is practically useless to anyone except Devs that want to build their own kernels.

Could the kernel source also be useful to those looking to find an exploit in MF3 (to unlock the bootloader or something to that effect), or is the kernel too high-level for that sort of thing?

Pretty sure it's too high level. It might be useful for finding a root exploit, but that's been done already for MF3. It wouldn't be useful for finding a way to unlock the bootloaders, but the only slim help it could find in this area is perhaps providing clues to understanding "aboot" more, and how it checks for signatures on, and loads the kernel. But even still, that's a longshot. TBH, anyone who might be looking for exploits here should already be aware of the source code's existence, plus this sort of exploit would brobably be little different between MF3 and MDL.
EDIT:
Also, welcome to XDA!
Excuse the possibly noobish question here, but what does this mean for the new root status? My phone came with MF3 and I really would like to get some custom ROMs on here. :?

OFFICIAL NET10 Samsung S4 4G LTE SGH-S970G Thread

I'd like to start a thread regarding the NET10 Samsung S4 4G LTE SGH-S970G.
Has anyone seen a way to unlock this device? Neither of the standard 2 methods of unlocking a Galaxy S 4 seem to work. I am unable to reach SERVICE MODE MAIN MENU beyond step 4 using the method described here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2282683
From what I have gathered thus far this might be able to be resolved by downgrading the radio/baseband however I would need an older stock firmware for this device and I do not believe one exists - and I am afraid of bricking the device using any other stock firmware.
Does anyone know of a method I might be able to carrier unlock this puppy?
Thanks in advance!
I have the same phone, SGH-S970G, and am unable to find a root option for it either. Has anyone found one?
EDIT: (01/14/14) SafeRoot also worked for me. Thank you to all for your help, I really appreciate it!

I noticed that some members have had these straight talk phones for more than a year now, so shouldn't some people be able to unlock their Straight Talk/Tracfone Galaxy S4 phones by now?

JTAG stands for joint test action group, which is essentially a common IEEE serial port located on the motherboard of many devices. In a phones case, a Riff box is used to access the port and flash device specific files to the motherboard directly, thus eliminating the need for the phone to be on or functioning in the first place.
In this case, the jtag port is used to write to the emmc chip directly to override the system check and flash earlier firmware.
You can on the S4 but you need MDK firmware, you're better off asking in the S4 forum.

Yes, they left out the part where you enable the OEM unlock from Developer options. Probably because it isn't there anymore... First device Sammy removed or "hid " OEM unlock at the U.S. Carriers insistence no doubt. Root will happen for this.

No OEM Unlock Option?

Hey guys, long time XDA member, just recently getting back into modding again.
I've become aware of this relatively new feature under the DEV options, "OEM unlock," which is supposedly required before rooting the phone. However, mine doesn't seem to have that option in the settings. I've searched around for why it didn't appear, and have tried a few things including wiping it from the bootloader, which was a massive blunder as it still didn't appear. Is it safe to go about rooting it without having this option available, or am I in deep waters here? My model is an SM-G955U for reference. Thanks for the help!

Yes you can and it is very easy. Go to Settings, information, softwareinformation, tap buildnumber 10 times. Then go back to settings and scroll to developeroptions (bottom). The OEM unlock is the 5th switch.
After that bootloader will be availible so you can root

S8+ sm-g955w is a Snapdragon therefore there is no OEM unlock in the Developer Options. Would be great if you can give an informed advice next time.

I can confirm that this feature does not exist on a T-mobile S8 Plus and that T-Mobile technical support blames Samsung and Samsung blames T-Mobile. We all know that it is T-Mobile that turns this option off and delivers the ROM to devices. This is done strictly for monetary reasons, locking in advertising revenue and subsidies and customer forced loyalty. In fact, this is extremely anti-consumer anti-competitive and a completely despicable practice.
If you purchased a four-door vehicle and the back two doors were welded shut by the dealership and were told you could still access the back seats through the front seat, there would be complete outrage about such practices. However since most users are not developers like we are, and do not understand the implications behind this, such as security - in that you're not able to run a proper firewall on a device which is not rooted, there would be outrage on a congressional level.
Sorry for the rant, but this practice has to end. It is a loathsome practice whose benefit only serves to increase and secure revenue streams for those involved in controlling such features. They can say what they wish about the technical issues which may prevent this but it all boils down to money, money, money.
