Hello all,
I've looked through a lot of information online, and am not able to find anything.
Here's the situation, as many of you probably know, the headunit in the 2016 Honda Civic, for all markets - is Android-based.
Another fact that some of you may not know, is that the headunit is the same for both navigation-equiped models (aka Touring) and non-navi models; all of the head-units have a built in GPS, however Honda seems to have disabled the/or not installed the app for Navigation (Garmin-based).
When you fire up the headunit, you have an "Apps" section, which includes the standard stuff - Gallery, calculator, etc, however you also have an "App Installer" app, which looks for APKs.
You can throw an APK onto any USB drive and it will pick it up, however, it will not install - when you select the APK, the installer will be grayed out.
On previous models, (model year 2015), you could get around this by renaming the APK, however that trick does not work on the 2016 North-American trim.
Does anyone know if any progress has been made into this, or how the unit has a "Whitelist" app pool? Perhaps a "package name" approach - i.e. com.honda.navigation - that's contained in some sort of global whitelist?
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
It really irks me when a manufacturer soft-locks features that are already built in, and doesn't even offer you the alternative to unlock them....

This 'issue' (not sure we can really call it that) applies to all trims of the 2016 Civic with the 7" infotainment system.
+1 I'm looking to thia too but couldn't find anything. All I get interesting is when you hold power+menu and the brightness bottom on the top will start mew menu and after you choose the bottom one you will have couple menues there and if you hold the menu again will get you another menu and if you hold it again will get you another one but couldn't find anything helpfull for apk
Does anyone know the actual manufacture of that had unit

I was poking around via adb last night and found a few clues.
These are in /system/app:
Code:
com.clarion.displayaudio.apps.appmodesip.inputmethod.latin.apk
com.clarion.displayaudio.apps.appmodesip.inputmethod.latin.odex
com.clarion.displayaudio.apps.tenkey.apk

com.clarion.displayaudio.tenkey.apk
com.clarion.displayaudio.tenkey.odex
com.clarion.displayaudio.vehiclecustomize.apk
com.clarion.displayaudio.vehiclecustomize.odex
So I think Clarion's a safe bet.
Fing, the app on my phone I used to find the HU on my network, shows the NIC is Alps Electric.
I'm really hoping we can find a way to root the NA head unit or at least sideload apps. I found a thread last night where it looks like XDA user nanddroid has opened the head unit up and found an internal USB port. At this point, that's probably our best bet for getting write access to the filesystem.
I'm happy to test things out on my own head unit as well. Mine's running 4.2.2. Not willing to rip apart the dash yet though

I downloaded it and poked through it. The bootloader stuff might be the only useful stuff in there but I'm no expert. I tried rebooting my head unit into the bootloader using
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
over wifi but it just rebooted the head unit and went back into Android.
I'll bet there's a key/button combination that can be held to get into the bootloader menu when powering on the head unit/car. I tried powering on the HU while holding Power, Power + Brightness, and Power + Brightness + Menu to no avail.
While poking around in the Developer Options, I did see a "Boot Mode" menu with a few options: Uploader, SD Boot, USB Boot. I'm a little hesitant to try those out but I'm curious what they do.

That reminds me I also tried doing an `adb backup`. I accepted the prompt on the head unit and everything appeared to be running as expected but the process resulted in a 41 byte .ab backup file. They've really got these devices locked down.

Yeah, I don't have the heart to tear my dash apart just yet. If I knew where the USB port was in the head unit, I might consider it but I don't want to go in blind.
If we had ADB over USB we'd be set.
I'll mess around with it this week end I'm in school for Android development maybe I can put it to use lol

According to others in the honda pilot forum there is a hidden usb port in the back of the head unit..... It appears to be usb type B, like on a printer. I have yet to see a picture though.
I should note I own a 2017 ridgeline running 4.2.2.
Is it also safe to assume the only way to get a system dump is by rooting the head unit first?

And that's a Civic, not a Pilot? I ask because Honda's parts listings show the Pilot HU being made by Clarion, but the NA Civic's made by Mitsubishi. I can connect to my Civic's with adb via wifi but not get it go online (see attached). I think that's because it's not in USB debug mode, because there's no way to turn on developer options, but you didn't seem to encounter any difficulties with that?
My 2016 Civic EX-L is has a unit made by Mitsubishi for sure. Clarion sounds like the Pilot to me.
Anyways, something I've been thinking about is trying to get my hands on the software update USB that is part of the TSB 16-022 (http://www.civicx.com/attachments/ml-reaasc6a-usb_drive_sb_16-022-pdf.10010/). The USB update has a honda part number of 07AAZ-TBAA100 and seems to be available from honda parts stores online. I can't find an disk image of it online. If it has a full copy of the OS file system, might be able to extract it and look for vulnerabilities. Or it might be possible to learn how to create a custom update USB. Clearly from the TSB instructions, the headunit recognizes it as a system update and presents a prompt that is different from anything I've seen on it before.

I purchased one yesterday.... I have been posting my thoughts over here:

It is not too bad but has some strange things such as problems with the marketplace downloads, unable to see wifi scan results. However wifi does work and the browser is very nice. The device is actually pretty snappy (not fast by any stretch) most of the time once I did a home-back-power and reset it to fresh. I am keeping mine to play with.

Do you know how to enter recovery mode with this thing? has anyone tried a different rom?
i just played with the e-book today at kmart, since they didn't have the tablet
the electronics guy just let me play with it for about 30 minutes. I couldn't get it to connect to my wireless tether, that was kinda ****ty. I wanted to test out the browser and see if for 100 bucks i could get everything i needed.
I have my raincheck for the tablet, supposedly coming tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it but not holding my breath.
Thanks for the input guys, does the browser support flash content or HTML 5?

I actually have a few notes posted here as well (www.ordner.us) but the screen got much better after I hard reset it -- I think by turning it off, holding down the home+back buttons then holding the power button. It seemed to reset it to fresh... however it still does not work with market right. I saw tonight on the augenus.com site announcing a patch to fix the market issue and others within 48 hours. I also can not figure out how to control the volume. The web browser is very good and does run flash video.
Recovery mode can be entered by holding the home button and power on (I think that was the combo) however there is no way to navigate or select that I could figure out so I could see the menu but had to use the hardware reset button on the back to reboot.
Ok quick poll... amongst those who have purchased this, is it worth the money? I guess a better response could be had after the update, but even as it stands now, buy it or not?
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
No -- I am keeping mine to mess with but between the volume (unable to control no hardware buttons), marketplace problems, and missing menus right now I would not bother. The update/patch may change that. Of course what other android tablets are actually available NOW and not "coming someday" like most it is a pretty neat piece of kit to mess around with and generates lots of conversation whenever I pull it out.
thanks for the info wowsher
i think this will get me what i need. Few battery hours on wifi to read my online textbooks and a restroom browser
When playing music there's no way to control the Audio. but in a Movie the stock video player has Audio up and down next to back pause/play and forward. So you can control volume there.
They should add that to the music player. I can't do apps either. waiting for patch

Agree'd. for $150 it's a sweet device. I've got it runnning pretty decent so far and I uninstalled some of the junk and got a taskiller. Quadrant scored just below a Droid.. not bad for $150 with a 7" screen. I'm going to keep mine.
will try ADW next but i doubt it will work. they probably have a highly modified launcher
I would have posted under my account that has been on XDA for 4 years, bluepoint150, but i can't recover the password...
Anyways, I ended up with a Demo Unit that i got for $99, it is a 32GB so i'd rather keep the unit because its $50 less than a regular 32GB unit, but I flashed to the stock 3.02 webOS before I found out that the demo units won't let you register an account.
I was trying to see if anyone had the file to allow me to return the demo unit to its original software so it could at least be used in some capacity until an Andrioid port comes out.

thanks for the prompt reply; to get the most recent build to work the theory over there is to call HP and get them to "unlock" those of us with DEMO units to allow the devices to work like regular units.
I can imagine this will be a few days or it might never happen; so that's why I was looking for some way of getting the Demo OS build back so I would be able to get to webOS and get the dev kit on.
As it is right now, I can't move passed the Activation/Registration screen; thus, for now my TouchPad is a rather expensive puzzle/paperweight. I can't register a profile and I have no access to the core OS to try and get dev mode on.
On the pixi there was a way to bypass the registration screen by putting it in dev mode. Look into that, I did it for a few pixi phones I sold cheap and people just wanted to make calls rather than be explained the whole registration process. Might work for you. I'm on mobile, otherwise I'd get you a link, sorry.

they can't get past the initial webos sign in screen. we can't get to justtype.
Thus, I am back to where I started. There has to be some place that has the demo unit ROM/firmware so the unit can at least be used in some fashion.
Either that, or I guess I will have to wait until an Android port is done. Maybe I can keep my fingers crossed that HP or someone else will help fix this little snafu.
The demo units were not intended to be sold to anyone, ever. They have a specific firmware version on them for the demo. There may be no way to change this. Go to the store and hope they can trade it out. If not you can try calling the support line and hope HP will fix this.
Finally got an outline of a (temp) solution put together after finding references on precentral and webOS roundup.

Hello everyone, brand new to the forums, and new to Android in general. Not new to Linux however.
I've got a Pantech Flex P8010 that I was given and need some help with. I've read all the Flex threads, many of the Burst threads, still cannot find an answer. The previous owner states that the phone worked fine until he attempted a "hard reset". I don't know what he did, he doesn't remember, but it doesn't have any physical damage. The phone will power up to the Pantech logo screen and hang, or it can be powered in to the bootloader (vol up and down +power). The factory reset (vol up + power) doesn't work. I can get it to fastboot mode, PDL download mode, and I can power it off from bootloader. Reboot just hangs forever. I can power the phone on with the power button, but cannot power it down with the button. I have to either pull the battery or, in bootloader, select power off. Bootloader tells me the kernel hasn't been "tampered" with, and the phone is oem locked.
I use Linux as my daily OS. I have two Debian systems, both 32-bit. One is Mint LMDE, the other is a Debian Wheezy system I built from the basic. I am building a 64-bit system but it is not functional yet. I don't yet have drivers, MTPFS, or any other tools running on the Debian boxes, but I do have Pantech PC suite and adb/fastboot mini on a Windows 7 laptop. I also have recovery and boot images, and a lot of various drivers in the folder, and that is the machine I've been using with the phone.
Adb doesn't work at all. The previous owner knows less about Android than I do and so usb debugging is not on. Fastboot sort of works. I can issue a fastboot reboot-bootloader command and the phone will do just that. But fastboot oem unlock doesn't work. Trying to flash recovery or boot images returns a failure. Fastboot devices doesn't return the name and serial number, it instead gives an 8 character alpha-numeric string.
I've looked at the various directories and etc over on Github, and of course it's all like being home since it's Linux directories, but I can't get in to the phone to compare what's there.
Is there ANY way for me to get in to this phone? Either with Linux or Windows? Can I push or force debugging on? Is the Flex well enough known yet? I could not find any similar situations for the Burst, but if the threads are out there and I missed them, please let me know. If I can get the phone working I'll eventually root it, fiddle with the ROM, and put Debian side by side on it, but for now I just want to have it working so I can really take a look at it. Is there a generic method for Android I've missed somewhere? Or for ICS in particular?
This phone is my introduction to Android, so of course I picked a problem. I'll probably pick up another Flex to mess with...I really like the hardware specs...but it'd be nice to have two functional phones, one for daily use and one to learn on.
Oh, and let me say THANKS to each and every poster over on the Flex Dev threads, and also to the Burst folks. Loads of good information that I will put to good use once the phone is working....if it can get there! Not afraid of technical Linux tools or workarounds, but not up to speed with Android specific terminology or tools, and I don't care much for Windows but I can use it.

Thanks for the reply, Mikey.
I can get into the bootloader menu no problem. And both fastboot and PDL will work, sort of. But I think because the phone is still locked, and usb debugging was never turned on, it's not allowing me to do much. I've talked with Pantech, but so far no joy. If there were a PDL tool for the Flex that could work around debugging being off, or even turn it on, that'd be great, I could recover. But I can't unlock the phone with fastboot, and adb commands can't do anything without debugging on. The phone is still so new, maybe I'll just have to hang out a while until someone with much more experience has the same problem and solves it.

Oh i see. Doesn't sound good. Sounds like it just comes up a generic Qualcomm device which i don't think there are any programs to work with it. Try asking the pantech burst community they made great strides with there device. Phones are similar just ours is a better upgraded version. Sorry i can't be of much help.

Hey, you helped just by answering the thread.
My thought was that since the phone hasn't been out long not many people have run in to this problem, and most of them just get a new phone. I like getting in to things and figuring out how to fix them, so here I am.
I'm currently looking at threads for the Burst, and Samsung threads for phones with the Snapdragon. I don't yet know know enough to know if that will be any help, but like you said, lots of work has been done and is being done with the Burst, and I'm getting some good ideas from them.
Pantech hasn't been much help, but mostly because people want easy fixes these days, or they just get something new, so their tech support people don't really get into the issues. I really like XDA, it's a bunch of people who find a problem and just keep working at it until they solve it. And if that causes another problem, they work at THAT until it's solved. I think I'll contact Qualcomm and see if they have any ideas.
Thanks again.
Good luck man glad to see people wanting to learn on here. Your right everyone just wants to have a one click fix, but ain't always that easy. I hope you get your Flex recovered. Sounds like you hosed the partition table. Not sure how you go about it without adb access. Anything i can help you with i will I'm not very experienced but i been in the scene for awhile. Keep tinkering with it hopefully you can figure it out. It's like a puzzle you just have to find the right pieces and put them together in the right order.

It's a mystery. I got the phone in this condition, and the previous owner had no idea what happened. He says all he did was try to reset the phone, but I don't have any info as to why he needed to. My suspicion is that he was trying to flash a ROM or something and didn't know what he was doing, and with the Flex being so new there isn't much development done yet. I see lots of good stuff about the filesystem and other things on Github, but so far I can't find a single thread anywhere about this situation. It's mostly a matter of time until the smart folks here find some tool that'll help me. In the mean time I'm learning Android's particular quirks. I do use Debian Linux as my daily OS, so Android isn't a big deal...manufacturer firmware is. Even Pantech doesn't seem to know how to help. What's frustrating is that it is THAT close...like you said, it could be an overwritten partition or some other partition error, a deleted file, an overwritten bootloader, etc. I just need to figure a way past the lockout so I can look at the files. So simple, but so hard. If he had turned debugging on, I'd be ok. Or if I could find a tool to unlock the bootloader (if it's not corrupted). So yeah, learning process. The Flex might be obsolete by the time I figure it out, but I will figure it out.

Need help. Tried reading the other posts but did not find a situation that resembles mine. Besides am still a newbie when it comes to Android developer forums.
My phone screen cracked completely and I see nothing on the screen. Is there a way I can wipe the data or do a factory reset before trying to get rid of the phone?
I had a screen lock on the phone. My laptop does not seem to find the phone either when connected via the USB cable.
Is there a hardware reset button underneath the hood ? Or are there any other options.
Any pointers will be greatly appreciated.
How are you trying to get rid of the phone? Android device manager should be able to wipe it for you. If your just gonna throw it out though take a hammer to it and finish the job.
Shoot it with guns and burn it with fire

The Android Device Manager did not connect to the phone. And the phone is not detected as a drive by my laptop.
I was hoping to salvage something out of the phone by selling it online for parts and use the money for my next phone. Am currently on those cheap flip phones and want to get back to the android experience .

ok boys and girls i scewed up. i was installing HAL9 mod 5 and i hit the erase data button twice and saw the box unchecked as i hit the install button. m y heart sunk and the install continued. i thought to myself well i'll just go into recovery and erase the cache and do what i can there. well guys i have not been able to get into recovery. i have tried every method i found online which i'm guessing isnt all of them. ... i hope. i dont have any buttons beisdes a touch button that lights up when i turn my lights on. this button is a mute button while android is loaded. i also have a reset button which ive hit in every combo i could find. so far i have tried holding down the reset button for 15 to who knows how long waiting for the mute button to flash which it never does. i have tried hitting the screen while i let out the reset button in every corner and with 5 fingers. sounds wierd to me but i saw it work on youtube haha. ive contacted the seller through amazon for firmware and directions to get into recovery but i dont have high hopes. does anyone have any ideas? ive attatched some info pics.
also this head unit came with android 10 installed
It would be cool if people posted all the ways they get into recovery or maybe i should of made a post about all the different ways to get into recovery on android head units so there is a one stop shop for people looking at how they could possibly get into recovery mode.

You miss the posts for getting into recovery on mtcd type units
No I found them. I don't know if I found them all but I've read a lot the last couple days. I've tried maybe 4 or 5 different ways that didn't work for me along with reading various posts i thought might help me. I guess want to be absolutely sure i have to build an otg cable and opening up my head unit. But I did research before my post. I also found a lot of posts similar to mine that got zero replies. But I think it's from no research before posting and that's understandable. I have tried to make a usb to boot from using the SD card tool from hal9 older mod and files from a new Ota but it didn't boot from there using the directions I found.

Yep, sounds like partitions are now bad. OTG is the only way to restore that.
So will the forums about px5 work on px6? I do have the mcu and system files from the manufacturer. It's crazy to me that they're systems that have no way to enter recovery or bootloader at all. My system isn't bricked bricked it still tries to load android but stays on the android loading screen until enough time passes that it will restart.
Hi there, now it's me- same issue...
did someone found a solution meanwhile?
