Need help. Tried reading the other posts but did not find a situation that resembles mine. Besides am still a newbie when it comes to Android developer forums.
My phone screen cracked completely and I see nothing on the screen. Is there a way I can wipe the data or do a factory reset before trying to get rid of the phone?
I had a screen lock on the phone. My laptop does not seem to find the phone either when connected via the USB cable.
Is there a hardware reset button underneath the hood ? Or are there any other options.
Any pointers will be greatly appreciated.
How are you trying to get rid of the phone? Android device manager should be able to wipe it for you. If your just gonna throw it out though take a hammer to it and finish the job.

The Android Device Manager did not connect to the phone. And the phone is not detected as a drive by my laptop.
I was hoping to salvage something out of the phone by selling it online for parts and use the money for my next phone. Am currently on those cheap flip phones and want to get back to the android experience .

Hello i just bought a used nexus s and well here it goes...
the story goes like this he bought it a month ago and just this past week he dropped it in a puddle but was quick enough to retrive said phone he then did the rice trick and now there is no sign of water damage aside from the 2 white seals faded red he said the phone worked for a bout a day and now just freezes in a google logo,...
now this leads me to believe a software issue so i am going to stiack with that for now
i am lookin at any ideas of what it could and what i should do now keep in mind i only paid 50 bucks so if it is repairable i have no issue in doing so for this phone as i wanna be able too use it sometime and toss this optimus one away lol
than you very much
can you adb to it while it is in the google loop?
re
well it is just the google screen with a lock at the bottom of the screen right i also tryed the power and volume hard restart and it took me to the bootloader options for recovery but i think my usb needs to be hooked up maybe as should i have the andriod software for it like im not really used to this and i really would love to see this phone work

If you can get into the bootloader and it is just a software issue check this thread for info on returning to stock system in the bootloader http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1078213
Did you get it to work?

what is the model of your phone and also the operating system of your computer? You want to be careful about using the correct ROM for your phone. Read up about adb. The process is simple enough if you provide enough information.
adb load cwm
adb flash ROM
and you should be good to go.
Not 110% sure if some one were to tale it and tend too itt i would pay for shipping completely i just wanna try to use it

I'm betting the NFC/"SIM Card" daughter board is hosed. If that's the case, you may be screwed, since I'm pretty sure your ESN is stored there. Tear apart the phone and look for corrosion and/or PCB trace delamination. Spray all PCBs down with a mild contact cleaner and fully dry.

This is going to be long!
If anyone has insight to this would be appreciated
Precursor: I am on CM9 nightly (7-27-12) with 6.0.1.0 non touch recovery (NS4G)
So last night I go to open my opera web browser and it would flash like it would open and instant close (no error message). I say OK thats weird and decide to reboot. Upon rebooted I am greeted with never ending amount of FC's from every app and service imaginable. I again say OK EXTREMELY weird and decide its time to restore my backup from yesterday.
I reboot in recovery and what do I get greeted with? Unable to mount /sdcard! Long story short after scouring google for about an hour I find that if I do a fastboot oem lock/unlock I should get back up and running. Thankfully that works and I install the newest 7/31 CM9 nightly.
I wake up today without my phone alarm going off when it should. Weird huh? I go to open the clock and get a FC from the clock application. Reboot and it works just fine. OK weird again.
Go to work and leave my phone on the counter to help a customer. I come back to the desk and my phone is in recovery mode? Uhhh what? I reboot the phone and it says "encryption unsuccessful" and the phone needs to wipe data and reboot to continue use...
I decide WTF why not, not like I can use it. At this point I'm worried though. The phone reboots to recovery and I guess does a data wipe (takes 3-5 mins) and reboots. Now I am stuck on the CM9 bootscreen and won't go past.
I have some ideas as to get the phone (hopefully) back up and running. Just curious what this sounds like to anyone more knowledgeable then me (especially the part where it tried to encrypt my phone without me touching it!)
Any thoughts or help is appreciated!
Edit: I tried copying files to sdcard from recovery using mount usb storage. The files copy over and as soon as I leave the mount menu and go to install the zip files WHICH I SAW ON THE SDCARD they ARE NOT THERE anymore.
Edit2: It still lets me install the CM9 7/31 nightly which I had saved on the phone yesterday. Even after wiping everything and reinstalling the ROM I can't get past the CM9 bootscreen
Edit3: Tried fastboot, odin, nothing works. Even after odin I still get the CM9 boot screen. Pretty sure something is messed up to the point of I need a new phone. FML!
YESS!!!
YES I WANT ATTENTION.
I Have exactly the same. Mother of smartphones Somebody help us!

I HAD THIS SAME EXACT PROBLEM
Temporary solution: heat the phone up with a hair blow dryer. get it hot but not so hot that it melts things. it will be able to boot up and work. I used this method so i could copy my sd card to my computer and wipe everything off
Permanent solution: turn your phone in for repair. there is no remedy to fixing this. apparently the circuit board or chip is bad and you can't fix it.
Luckily I had best buy black tie protection and I am waiting on my new replacement phone.

You can have mine lol x) And Yep i fix computers for friends and so on their friends and this sounds like Nvidia was behind the chip... xD
It wouldn't matter who actually makes a chip if the heating it up is a temporary fix. That is a OEM issue. Basically think xbox360 rrod with the warped boards the solder melting/failing and the chips get loose etc.
Unless heating up failed flash storage temporarily makes it work. Which I doubt is the case but don't actually know. Brings back memories of putting failing HDD drives in the freezer though.
Well this is my official goodbye to the Nexus S forums (not like anyone cares haha). Just got my shiny new Galaxy Nexus. Have a great night everyone and happy modding!

Unfortunately that is good only if software screwed up your phone. In my case and I'm sure others when it is hardware failure, that won't work :\
I admit I'm pretty new to all of this, but here's is the issue I'm having. I have an Asus Slider SL101 and I tried using the "One-Click Root" tool that is available on here and works for Transformers and Sliders. It rooted fine, then rebooted... I didn't even have a chance to install CWM or any other type of recovery, so all I have at my disposal is stock. After the reboot, it gets to the Asus loading screen with the progress circle spinning. Forever. I tried going to a cold boot, stops at the same screen. Tried wipe data, I get the blue progress bar and it looks like it works, same loading screen. Tried recovery, I get the red triangle. I've had it connected to my computer before but now when I try to connect it says that the MTP driver fails, I've also tried it on an XP laptop and it constantly says MTP Device found. I don't know if this is completely bricked, soft or hard. I'm completely lost and I would greatly appreciate any help. It's still under warranty and I did get an RMA number but I'm hoping someone can advise me into getting this done myself as I've read the horror stories of people sending theirs in only to hear that the warranty won't cover this. Thanks in advance.
Bump? Any help or suggestions at all?
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk 2
Unfortunately we Slider owners are pretty screwed in times like these since we can't use NvFlash. Might be best off going the RMA route if you're not able to use the stock recovery.

I had the same issue happen to me, you can always pretend you don't know anything. This may not be the most honest but I told them a system update messed mine up. They restored the system for me while under warranty.
From my standpoint, if they don't make recovery from an SD card a default option, I have no problem being a little dishonest. Especially when I'm reading people are being quoted $200 on a $300 device.

That's pretty brutal, but they can't necessarily see what you did to it. At least from my standpoint, the device was completely bricked when I sent it to them. And still within warranty, which is why I bothered at all, because the slider's support is pretty lacking from the dev community compared to the transformer. :\
Call me paranoid, but after reading the thread on Unbricking that got bumped a couple days ago, I'm a little afraid I might one day brick my device. Even though I take all the precautions, it looks like bad luck has set upon a handful of guys, and I feel like it might happen to us all one day. I'd feel at ease, after reading that thread, however I don't have a PC and I have virtually no way of getting my hands on one!! Is there no way to do this on a Mac? Is any dev working on this or able to point me to instructions in case this happens to me? I just want to be ready..
Kinda surprised I couldn't find any threads on this.
The only way you can brick this phone is if you stupidly flash a ROM not meant for this phone. Please know the difference between soft brick and hard brick. Also there isn't any proven method to un-brick a soft bricked S 3 for the MAC. The last time I checked the MAC is a PC made by Apple running its own OS just like an iPhone is a smartphone, an iPad is a tablet and an iPod is an MP3 player but that is an whole other story.
Best response you'll get is to try using Heimdall, if it's working for our phone, if you absolutely must use Mac. Not many people have been trying that from what I see and I doubt there will be any change either. Besides that, find someone with a Windows PC and fix any issue you have.
And I completely agree with jmxc23.

That is for hard bricking. The OP is talking about soft bricking the device there IS a difference between the two.

So as long as I don't flash a non VZ rom I should be good and shouldn't get a soft brick? I don't mind having to boot into recovery to fix something, but having to find a PC might cost me a day or two without a phone, and a big fight with my wife. It might be worth my money to invest in Parallels..

If you're a consistent flasher, at some point you will need to use Odin. Maybe not enough times to justify spending money to solve your problem, but you're going to have to borrow someone's PC or use windows eventually unless someone comes up with some Mac development
That sucks. If I reset the flash counter does that help prevent this at all?

Resetting the flash counter is utterly pointless until you need to exchange the phone via warranty. So, no it does not.

I hard bricked my Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3.
I got the thing rooted just fine and I went to install a new ROM. I downloaded EZ unlock to unlock the bootloader and it all went fine. Then I went to restart it and nothing. It won't turn on at all. It doesn't enter recovery mode or download mode. It doesn't light up when it's plugged into the wall charger or laptop. My computer does make the sound when I connect the phone, but nothing shows up. When I open Odin I can get it to recognize the phone if I press the buttons to go into download mode but then it looses the connection as soon as it says added.
I followed this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2581166 but it didn't work.

It's complex, it rewrites your bootloader to your mother board using a riff box. It isn't something easy that you could buy and operate yourself.
You'd send it out to someone. They'd break apart your phone and rewrite the boot image, put it back together, then send it back. Costs anywhere between $20-60.

No problem, glad I could point you in the right direction.
It's not an issue about you messing with your phone. You just have to read more and understand what you're doing before attempting anything. All the information about 4.3 having a locked bootloader and not using ez unlock was readily available. Just next time you decide to root your phone, just read up as much as you can about it before attempting the process.
I really have no recommendations for jtag because I've never had to use it, but I know some eBay sellers can get pretty cheap.
