Am I Dead? (Losing Cell Svc) - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For the past few weeks I've been losing cell service - a lot! With the phone at home where I normally get 3-4 bars, signal will suddenly cut out & I'll get the warning notification. BUT sometimes I seem to lose the phone part of the signal & the phone seems to have data - though even then it will often fail even when it says there's a data connection. (I hope this makes sense to someone.) Sometimes it reconnects on its own, but usually I have to search for network & re-register. And about 10% of the time it fails to register on the first or second tries. Variations on all this happen multiple times per day & I probably have any cell service for a total of 5-10 hrs on any given day. (But once in a while I do get a good day with almost no outage)
At worst, I could live with completely unreliable voice service for a while as I'm aiming to buy the upcoming new Nexus. The bigger problem is that I do need semi-reliable data - and when cell cuts out Cell Standby battery usage skyrockets.
*I'm on Wind Mobile in Canada so cell service is never perfect but this is WAY beyond normal failings.
*Wind has tested the network & towers at my apt & say all is 100%
*I've replaced the SIM card.
*I'm stock 6.01, not even rooted.
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Verizon - Data vs Talk Question

So in my house i have anywhere between 2-4 bars of service (using a 6 signal bar meter) on my HTC Thunderbolt (same thing happened on my Samsung Fascinate, and my HTC Incredible). I use my phone as my primary source of internet via wireless teather or klink. (no DSL/Cable available). I get data speeds between 50k-120k, and never have any issues with data interruptions. I play world of warcraft for many hours straight without ever having an issue.
I can't hold a conversation on my phone in my house....anywhere. My calls consistently break up, and unless i go outside it will likely even drop. Outside where i get 3-5 bars of service it's still not great. The person on the other end constantly is asking me to repeat myself because of the breakups. I don't understand how data can be so good, and phone service can be so bad. Does anyone know why this would be the case?

[Q] Sudden Signal Drop

hey all, i am on the latest Oxygen rom with a fairly new desire on us cellular. starting last night, in places where i normally get good reception, my phone is completely dropping service, down to the "searching for service" prompt. I normally get 2-3 bars in my house, but it drops to the point where i have to walk outside the door to get enough service to send a text or make a call. In nearly any building i have no service, but outside does give me some, though not nearly as much as usual. does anyone have any ideas??? My phone has done this before, but not this bad and hasnt lasted this long. i have done the *228 (uscc store said to do it, and have done it where i actually have service) and it says my phone will not activate.

[Q] Weak signal UNTIL I make a voice call

My new phone is exhibiting strange behavior that I haven't seen any postings about. (okay, one posting, but it didn't have any replies http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=660243 )
I had a Note 2 (AT&T) that worked great for about 6 months until the usb port died. Several ROMS, several modems, no signal problems.
I warranty returned it, and new phone constantly loses or maintains a week signal, until I make a call. Using data, the signal stays pretty weak, and drops a lot. Typically around 1 bar. Browsing the web, the pages hang for minutes at a time. Outbound text messages frequently fail with an error. Incoming calls frequently go straight to voicemail. But, if I dial voicemail, the signal bar immediately jumps to full bars. Now I can hang up, and use a strong data connection for about 3-5 minutes, until the signal slowly drops back down. Toggling airplane mode, or rebooting does not seem to jump start the signal. Making a voice call though, jump starts it immediately every time. Additionally, the battery life seems to be much worse, but I haven't actually benchmarked it. It is the battery from the original phone.
I've tried the phone bone stock with the latest 3 modems, and with CleanROM and latest 2 modems, and with stock and Adam kernels. The behaviour is exactly the same in all cases. It's like the radio just sort of goes to sleep until I make a call.
At first I just assumed it was a hardware issue, because the old phone worked just fine, but the fact that a phone call wakes it up makes me wonder if there's more to it. I took it into my local AT&T store and they found the IMEI was listed as the old phone, and corrected it. Of course, my phone worked perfectly in the store, even before the IMEI change. I figured that was the problem though, and it actually seemed to work for the rest of the day, but the next morning it was back to a weak signal.
At this point I guess I'll return it, and try another one, but I figured I'd check here and see if there was a better solution.

[Q] Cell Standby with no SIM Card and Plane mode?

In the past year that I've used this phone without a SIM, this problem suddenly pops up out of nowhere.
A month ago, I come home from college and put my phone on the charger, like any other day. The next day, I notice the bars and SIM error disappear entirely. I assumed that this made the phone dead to the signal... I was wrong. Cell Standby had been taking a huge strain on my battery.
It would always be at 100%. No matter what rom I use, stock or AOSP, this problem would persist. Even in airplane mode, it would, for some reason, continue to drain my battery. I strictly use Wifi, since I took the SIM card and put it into a different phone, and yet, it's still happening.
I was able to get 2 days of standby before; now it tends to die in less than a day without usage.
I would assume this is a hardware problem, since this phone has been through so much abuse. Anybody else experience this, or know of a fix?
Here's a picture. I used my phone for maybe a few minutes... I was in Seattle that night, so I had plenty of area that had service. My main phone had 4-5 bars the entire time.

SMJ700h stopped working, how much of the Samsung official line is true?

this is the phone from the https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-j7/help/4g-lte-sm-j700h-t3543821 thread. I had become used to this phone not being 4gLTE supported.
But over the last month, almost all data usage has become so excruciatingly slow that data has in effect stopped. Most pages seem to stop at about the 15% mark. Waze wont pick up any signal at all and even CoPilot gives arcane errors when it is accessing data as opposed to GPS.
Samsung sent me to their 837 Washington repair location where on an absolutely minimal 'inspection' the bloke there identified that I have an international phone which he announced will not work and cannot "for hardware reasons" be made to work in the US. He said it has the wrong radio to work in the US. (dont I remember updating the radio as a software feature on my Cingular 8525 reasonably regularly? This is j700hxxu3bqc2)
I wondered whether this hardware impossibility could be the case if it had been working for 9-10 months, if a bit slowly. I said the problem had only started over the last month. He said T-Mobile had been changing things within all their transmission towers about a month ago. After which my SIM1 is now admittedly in constant "Roaming" mode on the home screen, although SIM card status shows tmobile in service, EDGE, not roaming (and mobile network disconnected with a signal strength of -87db, 13asu whatever that contradictory info means???).
Can I do anything about any of this please? Could I achieve anything by rooting and flashing?
None of this has anything to do with Smart Manager being in what it calls ultra data saving mode does it?
