My new phone is exhibiting strange behavior that I haven't seen any postings about. (okay, one posting, but it didn't have any replies http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=660243 )
I had a Note 2 (AT&T) that worked great for about 6 months until the usb port died. Several ROMS, several modems, no signal problems.
I warranty returned it, and new phone constantly loses or maintains a week signal, until I make a call. Using data, the signal stays pretty weak, and drops a lot. Typically around 1 bar. Browsing the web, the pages hang for minutes at a time. Outbound text messages frequently fail with an error. Incoming calls frequently go straight to voicemail. But, if I dial voicemail, the signal bar immediately jumps to full bars. Now I can hang up, and use a strong data connection for about 3-5 minutes, until the signal slowly drops back down. Toggling airplane mode, or rebooting does not seem to jump start the signal. Making a voice call though, jump starts it immediately every time. Additionally, the battery life seems to be much worse, but I haven't actually benchmarked it. It is the battery from the original phone.
I've tried the phone bone stock with the latest 3 modems, and with CleanROM and latest 2 modems, and with stock and Adam kernels. The behaviour is exactly the same in all cases. It's like the radio just sort of goes to sleep until I make a call.
At first I just assumed it was a hardware issue, because the old phone worked just fine, but the fact that a phone call wakes it up makes me wonder if there's more to it. I took it into my local AT&T store and they found the IMEI was listed as the old phone, and corrected it. Of course, my phone worked perfectly in the store, even before the IMEI change. I figured that was the problem though, and it actually seemed to work for the rest of the day, but the next morning it was back to a weak signal.
At this point I guess I'll return it, and try another one, but I figured I'd check here and see if there was a better solution.

Title - meant to say randomly lose service and have to reboot
I have only had this happen about 3 times since owning the phone (since two weeks after launch). Occasionally, my phone will altogether lose service and display the blue circle with a slash through it, and I have to reboot the phone to regain service. This happens in an area where I have signal usually, when this happens. Does anyone else have this issue?
I had a problem similar to this last night/this morning. I didn't make any changes/mods to the phone either...
Phone was on the charger last night and when I woke up this morning I noticed I didn't have any emails. I still had the 3G icon and 2 signal bars, but anything I would try to do using internet connectivity wouldn't work (checking mail, navigating to google.com, etc.). I just shrugged it off since this has been the first time it happened.
For what it's worth, I'm running JF6 with UnleashTheBeast and the circle battery meter thing...
RE: Network loss, etc.
I've had issues like this from day one. From my testing, it seems to be related to the radios. (Both wifi and 3g.)
Stock was horrid for me, but then again, I live/work in a place with really crappy radio reception. It was tough to tell if the 3g or voice network service losses were just "the location" or something with the phone. But the fact that it's doing it with WIFI when I'm 3 feet from my AP, and no other devices are having issues is telling. Things have stabilized a bit with one of the SRE 1.2 OC builds.
That, and I'm now having intermittent sound issues too. (Can't play ringtones for a few minutes, then I can, then I can't, etc. )
I'm actually starting to suspect it's relating to the blocking filesystem lag. Almost as if some app is just killing the FS. I'll keep investigating. But it's good to know I'm not the only user who is seing service drops in strange ways.
I'm having similar issues with data connection, and i'm completely stock at the moment. My coverage is great so it just doesn't make sense.

Yeah, it's completely random when it happens, and it has happened two out of three times in an area where I have service...
I am currently running Ninja-0706, radio 26.06.06.30_M.
Intermittantly, my phone will drop out of H and start cycling through all the connections, edge, gsm, 3G etc. After cycling through, it will go to no connection at all where you see "no service" on the screen. And it will stay like that for several minutes, no matter where I am standing in my apartment, or even if i walk outside. Then all of a sudden, it will pick up H, full bars and it will stay like that.
So far, this issue has only happened a couple of times, within the past couple of weeks, and at my apartment. I have full wiped and flashed different roms, and reflashed the radio after the first time this happened, so this issue cannot be blamed on current said rom. This has led me to suspect that maybe there is an issue with the tower in my area. Twice I have called AT&T now about this issue. Both times they claim there have been no outages or issues with the towers in my area. They also claim that the closest tower to me is about 1 mile away, so there shouldn't be issues as such with a tower so close. I don't know anyone in my complex who is on AT&T to see if they are experiencing the same issue. So AT&T seems to think there might be an issue with the phone and i might need to do a warranty exchange. Any ideas before I flash back to stock and exchange it out?
While mine doesn't go that far, it'll cycle between H and 3G for no apparent reason.
Mine does weird **** sometimes, too, on Tue 04_11_M2 radio.
Just today I was sitting around browsing via WiFi, and bam, no signal. Most if the time it'll kick back in after a sec or two, but it stays like that until I intervene by toggling airplane mode, then, it'll be back to 3-4 bars or whatever.
Second time its happened over the last month, so no biggy.
In my house I get lots of signal variations overall, which I guess should be expected.
Well, my phone has done it twice since OP. I just flashed back to stock and downgraded to s-on. I'm going to see about an insurance claim.
Update: Just got off the phone with AT&T. They said that this issue would need to be handled by the warranty dept. So got back on the phone with tech support and they suggested that I go into an AT&T store and have the sim card replaced before they replace the phone, as the sim card itself might be causing this issue. It seems plausible because the sim card is needed for a connection to the network.
Hi guys
I've tried researching this issue from time to time but have never been able to find any definitive information. A couple of threads around the traps detailing similar problems, but that's it. Anyway, what happens is this: the phone will be showing a couple of bars or whatever, but there actually isn't any signal at all. Calls can be initiated, but wont actually connect, and then can't be ended either. The only way to resolve the issue is to reboot the phone, or activate airplane mode and then deactivate it again (which tends to take considerably longer than a simple reboot). I'm calling it a radio crash because that's what it seems to be, but I could of course be wrong about what is actually going on under the hood.
This post is basically part of an effort to diagnose the problem before I decide what this phone's future will be (have a new, different model on the way now).
Thanks for reading, and any advice/information will be much appreciated
It sounds as if you have a defective phone, or it could be you carrier.
Have you tried a different phone.
Do other people have the same problem with that carrier
You could also think of it like this, carrier problem, you can connect to wifi if it doesnt have internet connection, it still can show full bars but nothing will load

I have an SGS3 now, with the same SIM in it (cut down to micro of course). Average signal strength (as reported by third party apps that don't pad) is about the same, but no dropouts at all (as monitored and reported by the No Signal Alert app). However the SGS3 supports both my carrier frequencies, and the Atrix 2 doesn't. Having said that, the SGS3 seems to stay on 2100MHz all the time anyway where I am.
I've also put a different SIM in my Atrix 2, from a network that is more compatible (850/2100), and although the dropouts are less frequent, they are still occurring. However, I haven't had a "radio driver crash" in over a week. The dropouts have only been momentary too, lasting no more than a few seconds, 1-3 times per day (mostly in the afternoon).
I'm also planning to charge the phone up and leave it at a couple of other locations for a day or two while continuing to monitor signal interruptions. Should be interesting.
Thanks for the reply
Just a quick update: left the phone at another location for a few days where the average signal strength is stronger, and not a single dropout was logged during that time. In certain areas this phone is obviously not as good as some others at maintaining a signal, but I don't think the dropouts themselves are indicative of a fault given this new information.
The previous instances of radio lockups/crashes are still haunting me a little, but this strange phenomenon is still yet to occur again. I also forgot to mention that I'd previously done a full restoration of the official 4.0.4 ICS release in order to return to the phone completely to stock, which might have something to do with that. Previously it was rooted, with only some minor modifications, but I guess it's not beyond the realm of possibility.
Wait i have an idea
Send me your apn data.
Motorola doesnt have the best antennas either.
Also does it crash at a certain time after it is turned on or is it random?

Hey guys--
So I unlocked my phone the other day with Motopocolypse and installed cm10 and things seemed somewhat smooth, but while I was doing all this I activated a backup phone in case something went wrong. So when I went to re-activate my real phone I've had some really bizarre things happen.
The signal meter is super wonky. It bounces from 1 bar to 5 and then it disappears completely and goes to searching for service. Sometimes I need to put it in airplane mode and pull it out to get it to actually connect again and other times it reconnects on its own seconds later, and then the process repeats.
When connected it only says 1x or 3G. I've read that LTE signal bars are messed up in cm10 ROM's but I'm honestly not sure if it has LTE or not. When I run a speed test I get around 500 Kbps down in an area where I typically have a decent 15 Mbps LTE signal. That suggests to me LTE isn't working correctly. On the other hand, I seem to have data during a call, which suggests to me LTE is working.
To further confuse matters, texting is all hosed up. When I text to my gvoice number for testing, it seems to be delivered about half the time, although the phone consistently reports it's been sent. My backup phone sent consistently 100% of the time. My real phone does seem to be receiving all my tests. MMS doesn't work at all (tried in the form of group texting, not a pic message).
The low and the high is I don't feel like I can rely on this phone right now. Do I need to flash new radios for jb or is it possible something went wrong in the unlock process? Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks!

So it isn't the unlock.
It might be CM10.
Have you wiped the cache???
Hello,
I'm asking for some help to diagnose my call problems on UMTS.
First of all, three things happened recently, and let's assume that they happened roughly at the same time:
I dropped my Nexus 5 on concrete shattering the screen completely;
Google released Lollipop which some people believe has problems with 3G and LTE;
I'm using a rather old SIM card manually cut to fit micro-SIM dimensions.
About two days after receiving my Nexus 5 back from guys servicing it (new LCD screen) I had a telephone conversation that was disconnecting once every minute or two. There was no problem recalling though. The same day later I noticed that dialer app says "Emergency calls only" which was pretty weird. I was on Cyanogenmod 11, some recent nightly back then.
My first guess - revert to earlier nightly via TWRP. It didn't help - I was still on emergency calls only and nobody was able to call me. However, I could browse Internet without any problems on 3G.
Second guess - clean flash stock 5.0.1. It didn't help too, however calling went back on for some time (several minutes) before breaking back to "Emergency calls only".
Third guess - buy a starter SIM and check if it works. It did at first but stopped after an hour or so.
Fourth guess - bring the phone back to guys servicing the LCD to check antennas. I've left it for two days. It was opened and antennas checked. Everything was fine, not even a bent flex.
For all this time when on 3G/LTE data transmission worked flawlessly. I could download Google Maps, browse the Internet, whatever. It's just the very basic phone function that acts weird - as if I wasn't registered to a network. Everything seems to work fine on 2G, except for very rare disconnects (once per two, or three days).
So, considering it's pretty weird I'm seeking for help - could it be possible that after hitting concrete something broke down on the motherboard that results in such weird behavior? Or is, perhaps, my retro-SIM dying? Any ideas? Maybe flashing a well-tested radio ROM? Diagnostic apps?
