Is the screen resolution really that bad?

I'm hearing really negative reviews on the tab plus screen resolution as it's not great outside in the sun and it is unbearable. Is this true? Do you guys believe the screen resolution to be really that bad? Thanks.

The screen resolution has absolutely nothing to do with sunlight readability so I don't really understand what you mean here

Don't know if it's against the rules but one was from Cnet. Another user was talking about it as well. Don't flame me, i'm just trying to see if it's all hogwash per say because i'm really considering getting a galaxy tab plus.

the resolution is fine for my eyes. I don't quite get what all the hype about resolution is these days... My computer monitor is around 100ppi... Why do I need a tablet or phone that has 400ppi?

What about the brightness level. That's the issue I've heard some things about. People are saying that the GT+ is very dim and difficult to see outside.

I can't comment on that, really. 99% of my usage is indoors, and I might have to wait until May before there's another sunny day where I live. Then again, the only tablet-like devices I've ever seen that are actually good in the sun are e-ink devices (kindle touch, nook touch, etc)

Again, some sources for where this brightness issue is coming from would certainly shed some light (excuse the pun)?
I have to agree with garyd9 here. My tablet lives indoors most of the time. The few times I've been outdoors with it I was able to crank up the brightness to where I had no issue with seeing the screen. Typically I leave the brightness set between 20-35% indoors and occasionally to as high as 45-50% depending on the light in the room. In full dark I run it to minimum as its too bright. Maximum is insanely bright and I can't imagine many scenerios where I would need it to be that bright.
It should be noted that I don't use the auto brightness as it is wholly inadequate for the purpose. I imagine that users who are complaining of dim screens are relying on the auto brightness feature and not adjusting the brightness manually. Overall I find the tablets brightness to be more than capable of handling the job.

You may also consider checking out the tablet in the store if possible. Stores are usually very well lit inside and should give you an excellent idea of the tablet's display capabilities.
For future reference so there's no confusion: your initial post contained contradictory information. You were asking about screen resolution when you really meant brightness. Which, as captnodegard pointed out, are two completely different things. It's helpful to use the correct terms when asking for advice. It's also best to cite sources when referring to other critical reviews, as some people may not have seen those reviews.

THIS TAB SUCKS!!!! (I'm referring to Ainol's Novo7 Tablet. haha).
Anyways, I have a lot of experience using the GT+ outdoors since i always bring it with me in my college. Most of the times i use it outdoors when the sun is in its full glory. I have a matte screen protector which is why sun reflection is not an issue. However, I have to increase the brightness to 80% just so that i can have a pleasant view on the screen. 60% brightness is usable but I love the colors when I'm using it with 80%.
I also notice that the back gets hot whenever i turn FULL brightness on. Which is why, i capped myself to only increase brightness to 80%.
However, I live in the Philippines where a 32 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit) is normal which could have contributed to the back heating up.

In my opinion, the screen brightness was too dim. Particularly in auto brightness. Compared to my Sony s and htc flyer, I wasn't impressed. Selling mine because of this and other disappointments.

so don't use auto brightness. did you even try disabling Auto Adjust Screen Power? It can be found in Settings >> Screen. It's different from Auto Brightness.

What "other disappointments"? Just curious.

I routinely use the tab as a TV in the car during traffic on my commute and if the sun is behind me then its essentially unwatchable at 100% brightness but aside from that it works fairly well.
I don't know how well it stacks up against other 7'' offerings except the Nook Tablet which I had tried out first in my hunt for 720p playback and the two seem similar in screen brightness.
I have noticed the 7+ does not feel as bright as my 10.1 but overall it works well enough outdoors and no screen except e-ink really works well in direct sunlight anyway.
I back up that last claim with testing done on:
Galaxy S and S II
iPhone 4 and 4S
iPad 1 and 2
Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 7+
The time I tried to use my laptop outside after I said "Gee it sure is nice outside"

The inability to customise mini apps, disappointing. This is available on 7.7. Also, the peel application is unable to control several of my devices...e.g. found no support for VCR. Found Sony S much better for this. Poor position of power button allows frequent accidental activation whilst working with device. I admit latter point could be due to my own clumsiness

Outdoor screen visibility

For those who own the phone how is the screen in direct sunlight. I work outdoors and hate having to shade the phone to see the screen. I was pretty set on this phone until the article about the s5 having a great screen and has a ridiculously bright screen. I really wasn't thinking about the s5 until that article came out now i'm torn.....really want the build quality, speakers, and lightning fast camera shutter with no hardware home button. On the other hand I really need a screen that can give me the best outdoor performance.

I work outside all day and leave the brightness around 50 and can see it fine

As the others have said, it's fine. Only catch is don't bother if you're wearing sunglasses, you'll barely be able to see.

If you have ever looked at an LED TV next to an LCD you'll know thats incredibly wrong. If you have a brightly lit room for a room with a lot of sunlight, you basically can't buy LCD. Its the same for phones, my friend has the m8 and i have a gs4, my phone looks 10x better than his outdoors.

I have a gs4 and m8, and I can see the m8 much easier outdoors.
Guess my eyes work differently than yours. *shrug*

My daughter seems to think her S4 lacks the brightness in direct sunlight that I have on my M8. Her face was frowning and drooling as she peered into the gorgeous Super LCD3 screen, which seemingly mocked the direct sunlight shining down upon it.

Depends on your luck with the device. There appears to be more than one screen manufacturer or something. My wife and I got our M8s at the same time, but while polarized sunglasses are not the slightest problem for me, with her phone the display vanishes in portrait orientation wearing them.

I think the m8 is easier to see than my s4. You always have the 30 return policy. I'd get the m8 and if you don't like it return it for the s5

Yeah, I've looked at 6 different M8s with sun glasses on, some were hard to read and some were not. Which certainly leads one to think that there are different screen manufacturers, or coatings, or something. (most likely different screens though)

True, it's hard to beat. I find myself picking up the phone and just turning the screen on sometimes just to look at how clear it is. :good:

So I'm not the only one then... lol

I am not gonna lie I just go into the app drawer to see bright colors and how epic it looks.

for me comes down to my environment... but normally I use adaptive because it looks good even with a super dim screen...

Basic has the most accurate colors EVER on a mobile device. I also believe it is near the top for all screens ever created. The colors on this are simply magnificent. The Photo mode gives nearly perfect AdobeRGB colors which is unheard of unless you're spending tons of money on calibrated professional photo displays. I would suggest against using anything other than basic if you're going to edit or print photos taken with your S6 as the colors will come out totally wrong when printed. The default Adaptive mode over-saturates colors to the extreme. It looks "great" (readversaturated) but is terribly inaccurate.

AMOLED screen burn-in

I'm using Waze app every single day for about 1.5 hour.
in the past when i had galaxy S4, after 2 month of daily use, i noticed on white pages i still see all the static banners and buttons of waze.
baisically, using Waze in daily basis, burn-in my screen in the static area of the app like the up and down banners, speed meter etc...
Can it happen also in my new galaxy s8+? what to you think? did the amoled technology haven't changed a lot in the past 4 or 5 years?

There is a new feature in Waze called battery saver, it dims the screen when you are over a certain speed and a certain distance from the next instruction, that might help with it.
Though to be honest I use it for about the same amount of time everyday and don't even think about any burn in, its definitely not something that I've noticed happening on my phone so far

So far.... the phone is pretty new so we can tell right now. hope it will never happen but my S4 experience keeps me worried about this phenomenon.

i can't find this option in waze.... which app version installed on your phone? which country?

I had that problem with my s7 edge. I got it changed on warranty. I'm too scared to use waze on my s8+.

Today i received an update to waze from play store and the function was added :good:

Definitely can still happen on the s8+. I'd recommend not having your screen excessively bright while static images are on screen if you can help it. It's a pain but this is just an unfortunate trade-off with these beautiful screens.

It's not a trade-off. It can happen with virtually ANY type of display. LCD, LED, OLED, etc. No mobile phone display is immune.

I'm sorry if you dont like it but its the truth. I absolutely love the Samsung phones so I'm not against the phone. I've had the Note, S3, S4, S5, S6E, S7E and now the S8+.
I'm the first person to correct somebody wrongly bashing these phones but in this case it is what it is mate. Its well documented and accepted as fact that screen burn in on Amoled is more prevalent than some other display technologies. You need to be a little bit more mindful with Amoled if you want to keep the screen looking nice with heavy use.

Based on your first response you obviously didn't grasp mine at all whatsoever. I wasn't comparing Amoled directly to any other screen technology but the fact remains that the prevelance of screen burn in is generally higher than other screen types in general. That's not just conjecture on my part.
Its accepted fact. Also I'd appreciate it if you dropped the childish, rude and flippant attitude towards me. I was simply responding to your straw man argument.

There was one week where I used it excessively. And I kept the screen full bright. When I saw the screen burn in with the arrow of waze navigation. I started looking up on the Internet to solve the burn in issue somehow. That's when I found out that it's a common issue on amoled screens apparently. And the only way to solve it was to send it back to Samsung for a repair or replacement.

Yeah unfortunately its one of those things that you just have to be mindful of, even when you're not on full brightness.
I was pretty lucky with most of my galaxy phones especially considering how heavily I used them, although my S7E was an exception.
I still have the phone and after just 13 months you can clearly see discoloration on the screen and admittedly very feint burn in on UI elements ie. the status bar. The screen discoloration is pretty bad and perfectly matches the YouTube app, where the video is playing up top and the static white comment section below put uneven "wear" on my screen. I'm now trying to make a habit to watch longer YouTube videos in fullscreen to avoid a similar result.

Yes they did. I rang samsung and told them about the issue. They got the phone picked up from my house. I was expecting them to probably just replace the screen but to my shock they sent me a brand new sealed s7 edge.

Amoled is notorious for burn-ins. I would avoid using any app for prolonged periods of time.

I work for a carrier and never in my 14 years have I seen a LCD screen burn in I have however seen multiple AMOLED panels with burn in especially demo phones (yes on all day rolling content but so are the LCD models) this is a risk with organic displays to his point is true it is a trade off whichever way you sugercoat it

Ambient light sensor location

Finally, got the OP7 few days ago. I'm real happy about this phone except some few quirks. One of the thing that drives me nut sometimes is the auto brightness adjustment. First of all, why do the even call this the "Adaptive brightness" in the first place. Does it have any thing extra to the generic implementation?
Anyway the thing is the there could be something wrong with the way I hold the phone, covering the ambient light sensor. Making it not sense the changing lighting conditions. Anyone knows exactly where is it located?

What I found with auto ambient light sensors is that they allegedly learn your usage patterns. What I tend to do to help it learn quicker is that I'll manually adjust the brightness slider when it's too bright or too dark for me.

I'm not exactly sure where is located
But the thing about "adaptive brightness" is that it would learn from how you are using the phone so it would know how to behave in different light conditions.
Like for example : Maybe you don't like the brightness to go all the way down when you are in a pitch dark room but rather being a little bit above so technically what you need to do is to manually adjust to the desired brightness and so adaptive brightness will learn that you like it that way in that condition.
The more you adjust it the best it should get ( give it a few weeks ) but right now i think it's a little bugged, but some have reported that is been fixed in the last Q dev rom.

Oh I see. That's good to know. I was not aware of this. As far as the proximity and ambient light sensors are considered. They don't physically exist rather the proximity and ambient response is done without hardware but with software with AI. You can refer the link below regarding this for a better understanding coz I don't really know how, it seems sophisticated.

Yep, even on my s10plus its glitchy in fact I'd go further by saying it doesn't work like it used to.
Example, the alway on display now doesn't turn off when you cover the ambient sensor where as in the previous older devices like the note 9 it would. When using a folio wallet case the screen still stays on for AOD.

It's behind the screen, just like the OP7 Pro. You can see the IR light with another camera. Or in direct sunlight, you can see two holes just below the camera cutout (and finger print).
Basically same as 7 Pro... which is not like old sensors.
