I'm hearing really negative reviews on the tab plus screen resolution as it's not great outside in the sun and it is unbearable. Is this true? Do you guys believe the screen resolution to be really that bad? Thanks.
The screen resolution has absolutely nothing to do with sunlight readability so I don't really understand what you mean here

Don't know if it's against the rules but one was from Cnet. Another user was talking about it as well. Don't flame me, i'm just trying to see if it's all hogwash per say because i'm really considering getting a galaxy tab plus.
the resolution is fine for my eyes. I don't quite get what all the hype about resolution is these days... My computer monitor is around 100ppi... Why do I need a tablet or phone that has 400ppi?
What about the brightness level. That's the issue I've heard some things about. People are saying that the GT+ is very dim and difficult to see outside.

I can't comment on that, really. 99% of my usage is indoors, and I might have to wait until May before there's another sunny day where I live. Then again, the only tablet-like devices I've ever seen that are actually good in the sun are e-ink devices (kindle touch, nook touch, etc)

Again, some sources for where this brightness issue is coming from would certainly shed some light (excuse the pun)?
I have to agree with garyd9 here. My tablet lives indoors most of the time. The few times I've been outdoors with it I was able to crank up the brightness to where I had no issue with seeing the screen. Typically I leave the brightness set between 20-35% indoors and occasionally to as high as 45-50% depending on the light in the room. In full dark I run it to minimum as its too bright. Maximum is insanely bright and I can't imagine many scenerios where I would need it to be that bright.
It should be noted that I don't use the auto brightness as it is wholly inadequate for the purpose. I imagine that users who are complaining of dim screens are relying on the auto brightness feature and not adjusting the brightness manually. Overall I find the tablets brightness to be more than capable of handling the job.

You may also consider checking out the tablet in the store if possible. Stores are usually very well lit inside and should give you an excellent idea of the tablet's display capabilities.
For future reference so there's no confusion: your initial post contained contradictory information. You were asking about screen resolution when you really meant brightness. Which, as captnodegard pointed out, are two completely different things. It's helpful to use the correct terms when asking for advice. It's also best to cite sources when referring to other critical reviews, as some people may not have seen those reviews.
Good luck in your decision!

THIS TAB SUCKS!!!! (I'm referring to Ainol's Novo7 Tablet. haha).
Anyways, I have a lot of experience using the GT+ outdoors since i always bring it with me in my college. Most of the times i use it outdoors when the sun is in its full glory. I have a matte screen protector which is why sun reflection is not an issue. However, I have to increase the brightness to 80% just so that i can have a pleasant view on the screen. 60% brightness is usable but I love the colors when I'm using it with 80%.
I also notice that the back gets hot whenever i turn FULL brightness on. Which is why, i capped myself to only increase brightness to 80%.
However, I live in the Philippines where a 32 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit) is normal which could have contributed to the back heating up.
In my opinion, the screen brightness was too dim. Particularly in auto brightness. Compared to my Sony s and htc flyer, I wasn't impressed. Selling mine because of this and other disappointments.

What "other disappointments"? Just curious.
I routinely use the tab as a TV in the car during traffic on my commute and if the sun is behind me then its essentially unwatchable at 100% brightness but aside from that it works fairly well.
I don't know how well it stacks up against other 7'' offerings except the Nook Tablet which I had tried out first in my hunt for 720p playback and the two seem similar in screen brightness.
I have noticed the 7+ does not feel as bright as my 10.1 but overall it works well enough outdoors and no screen except e-ink really works well in direct sunlight anyway.
I back up that last claim with testing done on:
Galaxy S and S II
iPhone 4 and 4S
iPad 1 and 2
Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 7+
The time I tried to use my laptop outside after I said "Gee it sure is nice outside"

The inability to customise mini apps, disappointing. This is available on 7.7. Also, the peel application is unable to control several of my devices...e.g. found no support for VCR. Found Sony S much better for this. Poor position of power button allows frequent accidental activation whilst working with device. I admit latter point could be due to my own clumsiness

hi, unlike a lot of android users i dont have issues with my battery life. so one day i thought about my eeepc i have and recall that i have an app that has a feature to actually make my screen brighter. so its like: low-mid-max-ultra, when ultra makes like an 120% of the screen bright.
so ive started searching for that on android but with no success. anyone know some app that will make transformer screen even brighter then max brightness?
cause i can really use that outdoor, as we all know its very difficult seeing something with direct sunlight, more like impossible.
thanx by advance
I do not see why you would want the screen any brighter. even in full sunlight with the screen brightness setting on auto I can read the screen very well. far better than my laptop.

+1 I dont have any problems with sunlight here the screen is bright enough
I don't know if such a thin exists.
My guess is no.
wierd. well maybe its because i have a matte screen protector, although i dont remember been any different without it. anyways, i think it'll be nice to have the ability to brighten it even more because i think that we still not Exercising this ips panel full potential.
but thats only me...
Look into an app called "Lux (Beta)". I know it lets you get dimmer than stock - not sure about brigter (ask the dev - he's very responsive). Tons of other features as well. It does costs $.99, but well worth it, in my opinion - my auto-brightness now actually works!

I know this is a slightly old topic but I wonder if anyone found a working (and not too dangerous) way to increase the max. brightness?
look for an app called "Display brightness" by RubberBigPepper.
According to the Android developers guide, the brightness is adjustable from 0 to 255, so it's possible.
They're not at all awesome!
I'm coming from a Galaxy Nexus (Amoled display) which has close to perfect black levels, and a ASUS Transformer (IPS display) which while it wasn't to brag about, it was better than the Galaxy Note 10.1's screen.
I was really looking forward to the PLS display on the Note, I heard nothing but great reviews on the tech, but this is really bad.
I mean the blacks aren't even even, its more purple than black.
Is this normal for PLS?
Is anyone else having this issue?
Were there any mods that can be done that fix this issue on other Samsung PLS tablets?
I don't see anything wrong with the black level but I haven't tried using the tablet in the dark yet. Don't compare AMOLED with LCD. LCD will always have ****ty black because of the backlight. The only LCD type I know that has decent black level is CPVA but it's not used in tablets and it's still far from perfect. Asus Transformer TF101 has much worse black level (I have both). Are you talkin about some newer Transformer? Or maybe your brightness is set too high?
Also keep in mind that a lot of websites don't use pure black fonts.
Try turning the display mode up to vibrant and reducing the the brightness.

if he's referring to the infinity, it's got a very annoying dynamic contrast. the screen dims and brightens as the screen changes, but it's not very discreet at doing so. my main reason for rooting the tf700 was to disable this stupid feature.
I'm sure I'm missing aomething, but I have a decent sum tied up in a plasma and HT equipment to get blacks close to right at home, so am always amazed to see people moan about black levela on $500 mobile device. I'm still amazed I can watch pretty hifh quality movies and even live tv on a mobile device like this, and just cant imagime being worried about blacks unless just atrocious. Am I expecting too little froma device like this?
I was referring to the tf101, but I went to best buy again and compared it to the demo model and realized mine was completely off.
So I TiB backed it up, flash that bad boy back to stock and exchanged it. This new screen is way better.
Although the viewing angles aren't amazing its still an awesome tablet.

Some are pretty bad like the iPad3 where if you're not directly front and center there is significant brightness fall off.
Good day.
I am generally very happy with my Infinity, ww30, rooted, and the build.props suggested here in the forum.
The only thing that drives me up the wall is the brightness thingy, it's just not bright enough.
It's generally ok when surfing the web indoors, HD movies all look darker unless I use IPS, regardless of the movie (I tried dozen).
Is it just me? Is there anything I can tweak to boost brightness?
The world looks generally ok to me, so I doubt it's my eyes.
Best regards.
I think this tablet has the bet brightness settings by far. If your tablet is not bright enough even indoors maybe you should close your curtains or something. I live in a fairly outdoor lit apartment and even I never have to put brightness on 100%. Maybe you have defective brightness? I don't know.

Turn on the super ips
What video player are you using? I believe MX player has a separate brightness setting within the app so maybe there is something there you can adjust?
i generally find the brightness on my tf700 to be plenty. I rarely turn the brightness higher than 50% (i usually use it indoors though).
When you're using MX and BS players, swipe up on the left side of the screen during play, this raises the brightness.
I use mine outside a lot. Even with the IPS+ off and brightness at 60% it's bright enough. But this is the Netherlands, and we do rarely see the sun... I imagine it's a lot sunnier at your end. That could be part of the reason.
not bright enough?!?!?!
if i crank the brightness all the way up and turn on IPS+ i can blind people across the room.
outside, in DIRECT, BRIGHT sunlight - yeah, it could be brighter, but it's totally usable IMO. better than any other portable display i have - by a huge margin.
doody.

haha yea. i've accidently cranked up the brightness before at night while watching a movie. ended up blinding myself for a bit.
We do have way too much sun over here, it's late September and it's bright as a supernova outside.
I guess it is faulty after reading all of you here, none of this is even close to how i feel with it, I'll blind my self with it only if I punch a hole through it and stare at the sun.
[Q] Brightness not high enough [Fixed?]
I have no reasonable explanation, nothing scientific, I cannot provide proof, it's like the talking dog from memphis or homeopathic treatment, but for some unknown reason, I did the following two things:
1. Reverted to stock build.props
2. did the "...5. Disable "smart dimmer", which is the reason you can see some screen flickering when changing between light and dark backgrounds that many find annoying (described by some as "dynamic contrast", which it resembles):
To disable:
echo 0 > /sys/devices/tegradc.0/smartdimmer/enable.."
and my screen is bright as Christmas morning.
I'm not sure why or what and when, but it works.
I'll try to add build.props teaks one by one to see which has bad attitude along with the smart dimmer.
Thanks mates.
Bugger, you may have had Auto Brightness enabled. Why did I not think of mentioning that...
Hey guys, I am looking into a good tablet to use to build into the dash. What do you guys think about screen brightness when using it in a car dash? Bright enough to be easily viewable in full sunlight? How about the low end, does it go dim enough to use in the dark without being annoyingly bright?
You got the right tablet for brightness! Has to be the brightest tablet available to date. Totally usable in direct sunlight. Low end is also perfect, dims down to a very low setting.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Yes I agree that this tablet would be a great option. And send us pics of the results! I've always wanted to mount a tablet in my dash but cannot find the time.
I find the high end to usable in direct sunlight, but keep in mind that, due to the glare-y screen, it is not going to be perfect. I must admit I sometimes find the low end of the brightness a bit too harsh on the eyes when reading e-books and such in nearly pitch-black surroundings (bedroom, mostly ), but there are several utilities that can help you out there. On my SGS2 I used Screen Filter a lot:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.haxor
The screen brightness on the TF700 is by far the highest any tablet has, especially with the IPS+ mode enabled. Easily readable in bright sunlight.

I have been putting out information about U11+ in hamdir's thread for couple of days. I thought may be I should collate all the information and create a thread. So, here it is. Note that I am going to keep adding stuff as I use the phone everyday to point out the good the bad and the ugly. Go ahead and ask questions. If its possible for me, I will try to answer.
Quick update
Very quick update folks....
I got the amazing silver in my hands now. Been fiddling with options etc. for last 30 mins.
It a thing of beauty, let me tell you that first and foremost!! Amazing silver is really a shiny light blue colour. I love it!
Indoors, its brighter than my HTC 10 Tianma display. By how much? I don't know but its uncomfortably high for me at max. I won't use it at anywhere close to max. May be around 50%. Can't compare outdoor in direct sunlight until tomorrow. Will update again.
The weight is not a concern for me, its a little bit more than my 10 but not by much. The screen is gorgeous and much better than 10!!
The FP scanner is a little bit of a problem for me because I am not used to the rear scanner. I am finding it odd to pick the phone to use it. But I knew this going in. So, some mental recalibration is necessary. I can see OCD types hating this aspect, but I am fine with it.

Couple of more quick updates:
1. Speakers are much better than HTC 10. Louder and clearer. You would be very pleased to hear these if you upgrade from HTC 10. Just saw the infinity war trailer on it and listened through Thriller....
2. Lowest screen brightness gets very low. Good for night time, in-dark browsing. Much lower than HTC 10.
3. The screen gets much blacker than HTC10 in "day dream" or "always on" mode in the complete darkness, which may help with battery if you are thinking of keeping AOD on always. The "light bleed" associated with LCD panels is still there through. In fact, its little uneven compared to HTC 10. On HTC 10, you can clearly see that the whole screen is lit up but only the text is brighter. On U11+, the lower left part of the screen is almost complete black whereas the right side shows more light bleed. I don't know if its a defect in my unit or its just something impossible to achieve during LCD panel manufacturing. Not perfection but not a big deal for me.
The default is not AOD but it is turn on the dimly lit display when you pick up the phone.
Double tap to wake works (someone asked earlier). On display button let's you put it to sleep in case you don't want to press power button to lock/put it sleep.
So far, thrilled to get this phone. I hope we work out TWRP really quick, root and I can move to this phone as my daily driver.

GSMArena got the battery life wrong on this phone or they tested a different phone. I have been setting up, installing apps, syncing email accounts and generally fiddling with this phone for past 3-4 hours with 1h40m of SOT (screen brightness at 50% with Auto on, my typical setting for HTC 10) and it has consumed about 16% of battery. Haven't got that kind of battery life from any phone I have used or seen anybody else use in practical terms (I don't believe in artificial benchmarks). I think there is nothing to worry about battery life on this phone. This will last even the big time users through the day (10-12 hour day) easily.
One thing i notice is that its idling very well when turned off. My HTC 10 did not do that very well. So, the wifi chip seems to have been fixed up.
Note that its running 8.0.0 with Oct 1st patch. So, this has to still get the 8.1.1 release, which potentially should improve things.

Its still morning here in bay area and not afternoon sunny yet. But with the morning sun behind me, I can clearly say that U11+ is better than my HTC10. With HTC camera app, I looked through a chain of balconies shaded by trees, and sun behind me, to see how far each screen shows me. Side by side, I could see more detail and farther in U11+. This is highly unscientific but the brightness in sunlight is an upgrade from HTC10 Tianma to U11+. I will try to get some photos of the two phones' camera app in sunlight later in the day.
I think brightness jump is not huge from HTC 10, but its big enough for me to say I feel more comfortable taking photos/videos outdoors. Note that Camera sensor may also be playing a role in this. HTC 10 has a smaller f/1.8 aperture. So, more testing may be needed on the screen brightness in general. But practically speaking, I browsed around and I had no trouble reading text with sun behind me, falling directly on the phone. That's good for me, 500 nits or not.
I tried with both Auto brightness enabled and disabled, at max brightness. Results are same.

Someone had asked for 4G/LTE support in the US. At least in the area I am in (bay area, CA), the coverage is same as what I got in HTC 10 on T Mobile.
Regarding the wifi, its much better than HTC 10. I compared side by side and HTC10 needed to be closer to the router by about 10 feet to be able to do speedtest from the point where I could speedtest on U11+ and still get full 90Mbps download speed. U11+ has an excellent wifi range and throughput. I get around -71dBm (signal strength) from my router at a spot where my HTC10 gives me -83dBm. At that spot, U11+ maxes out the internet traffic, whereas 10 is limited to about 45Mbps. So, anyone with HTC 10 will appreciate the huge jump in performance of wifi.
Also, the idling issue found with HTC 10's wifi is not there in U11+. It does not eat through battery while idling on wifi.

Couple of more inputs:
1. I went to work with the phone but unfortunately I did not have the other phones with me to click the photos in bright sunlight but I can tell you, the screen has no problems in the sun. It is very bright and very usable for me. Unless you have a defective unit, the brightness of the screen should not be a concern at all. My experience is only HTC 10 vs U11+, and I am loving the brightness upgrade.
2. Usage with my sunglasses. I can not use HTC 10 in portrait mode with my sunglasses on. It goes complete dark. I did not have any issues with U11+ in both portrait and landscape orientations. Am I thrilled to wear my sunglasses in the car again? HELL YEAH!!!

I have found the bundled USB-C earbuds to be of very high quality. I usually throw away packaged earbuds because they usually fall off from my ear but these fit in my ear very well. And boy they block the noise!!! I have no complaints about the missing 3.5mm jack.

Honestly, I don't use this feature anymore. In fact, with casting feature working so well (AC wifi) and its so very convenient compared to the wire, casting gets used most of the time. I used to do this but I never bothered to buy the USB-C cable with my HTC 10.
May be I will try this again. Try some gaming on the big TV screen, fun fun fun!!
screen casting with chromecast or similar technologies always has a noticeable lag of 1-2 seconds. With direct cable connection there is no lag.

AOD on HTC U11+, in my opinion, leaves a lot to be desired. Few observations:
1. It only has two modes: a. show dimly lit clock/lock screen when picked up, b. always on mode, which is fixed 24/7 or on a time schedule. It lacks the mode "show dimly lit clock/lock screen when notifications arrive and repeat every 5 mins until cancelled".
2. Always On mode is a hog. Nearly 2% per hour idling. Not very useful. Its darker than any LCD I have seen before but it still show most of the display in complete darkness.
It does not provide any customization in either mode. You get 4 types of clock and that's about it. It shows apps (including music app) and their notifications with icons on small area and clicking takes to the app after unlock.

hi, i have two question
first i'd be appreciated if you tell us how is the bluetooth headphone quality on u11+ ? beacuse i know u11+ has AptX HD and LDAC

I don't have bluetooth headsets to test this sorry.
But the display is the best LCD I have seen. It can not be equal to amoled in terms of blacks, but its the closest that an LCD has come in terms of blacks. I think the LCD technology does not allow this any better compared to amoled in terms of blacks. The contrast is amazing and the brightness is very very good. The usage in direct sunlight is very comfortable.
Unless you want to knit pick (like always on display has slight light bleed, which is the result of them trying too hard to emulate "black"), you won't have any issues with this display.

How is the video and audio quality? Is it real-time or is there any noticeable lag?
And what cable did you use? Thanks.

I specifically bought the HDMI->USB-C cable from Amazon for $19 (one of the most expensive cables I have bought) and tested it. It works great. No lags in the video (my TV is 1080p). The sound through my sound system sounded great.
The link to cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075JGM4W8
Idle drain is very minimal
It looks like wifi draining the battery when idling that was seen and documented by me on HTC10, is gone on U11+. I left the sync ON, data and wifi ON overnight. And I lost 2% battery in about 10 hours. This is how it should be.
Very very pleased with the battery and the phone overall. For me, this phone gets almost everything right. It will get better once I get hold of root on it.

how about the audio quality of headphones ?
Does the phone get hot with brightness on max? Or during heavy downloading of Apps or charging?
How long does a full charge take?
Are you using a case / cover? Noticed any scratches on the back?
Does YouTube allow you to stretch to full screen?
Thanks!

Great feedback on this device. Thanks for doing this @devsk
I am in SF also. I have been seriously torn about buying a international no warranty phone. I jumped to the LG V30, purchased from B & H then cancelled the order a couple days ago.
However, I ordered the U11+ last night from Amazon - NGP Store USA. They get decent reviews but have a really strict return policy. I tried the U11 earlier this year but returned it. The U11+ had all the U11 was missing + more. [emoji3]
-- Who did you buy from and did you entertain buying a warranty? If so, from who.
-- Cases seem to be limited. Do you purchase one?
Thanks.

Thanks. I bought it off of amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077PJXZFK
I did not buy a warranty. I took a chance and its been fine so far. The quality of the device and manufacturing is very very high. I am very pleased with the whole experience. Do not believe anybody who disses this device. It checks pretty much every box I had. Biggest thing is Treble. I expect to run well supported AOSP on this thing.
I am using the bundled transparent case and I am fine with it. Its minimal and it shows off the amazing silver very well.

This phone does not get hot under any circumstances (brightness or extended play). I have it in the bundled minimal case, and I played racing games for extended periods of time (connected to my TV using a USB-C to HDMI adapter). It drove the TV's 1080p display without any delay and with great sound! It felt warm after an hour of play but I would qualify that a lukewarm. My HTC 10 definitely gets much warmer than U11+. So, its an upgrade for me.

I never measured this from 0 to 100%. I am not worried about this though. All I can tell you is it charges very fast.

It depends on the video's aspect ratio. For example, Inifinity War Trailer filled the screen but apple sway ad did not. It does not stretch in general and I think that's the right thing to do. I would not like videos with a different native aspect ratio than 2:1 to stretch and show all stretched faces etc.
