Hello everyone! I have recently moved from NY to CA. Back in NY I had data speeds of 25+ mbps. Since I have been in CA my speeds have been much lower, sub 5. So I updated my towers with *228 and now my data speeds are EVEN WORSE. I only get 3G now and my speed is 1 mpbs at best. I'm currently running the latest version of slimkat, and I haven't updated my radio in as long as I can remember. Could the radio be my problem? Anyone have any ideas or maybe something to troubleshoot? My data speed makes it so some apps/games are barely usable. Thanks for your time.

You probably fried your sim card, you aren't supposed to use *228 on lte devices. Go over to Verizon and ask them for a new one.
As far as data speeds go, there isn't much you can do. You can switch to a touchwiz rom, and it should give you better reception, but it won't give you data speeds that quick.

I just had to say this. BadUsername, while you are correct that dialing *228 does in fact break 4G functionality, it does NOT fry your SIM card. What it does do however is put you on a 3G only PRL. Now when you go get a new SIM card it goes through the activation giving you a new 4G capable PRL #. I have read people say that they are able to get back on a 4G PRL by driving to another city (or another tower) and powering off the phone and removing the SIM will put you on a new 4G PRL. I haven't tested this however myself as I have never been stuck on a 3G only PRL.

OK thanks for the information. It shouldn't be hard to find another tower in So Cal. I'll report back if it works, otherwise I'll just get a new SIM card. Thank you!

Went to another city and had to reboot a bunch of times but I got LTE back. When I came back to my home city (where I had done the *228) and then rebooted my phone it went back to 3G. So it appears that my SIM card is now stuck in 3G at my home tower(s) but can get 4G else where... need a new SIM I guess. Regardless, my data speeds around where I live suck and it's really annoying. 10 mins south from where I live I am getting 10 fold increase in data speed. Thanks for the input guys!

Take the SIM out, boot the phone back up with no SIM card, let it sit for 10 minutes, power off, reinsert SIM, reboot phone. Should fix it.

Just wanted to update in case this happens to someone else. I did what you mentioned for 10 minutes, and then again for over 30 minutes and it didn't fix the problem. I went in and got a new SIM card and now I am back to LTE. Thanks for the help guys!
I've been having a network issue lately, thought it was the software update. I got a new simcard when I got the phone but the 10 minute trick has worked for me before, I usually have to do it a couple times though.
Woke up this morning and grabbed phone and notice a strange icon between my WiFi and battery icons. No signal, first tried toggling airplane mode, didn't help. Next step was to reboot, didn't help. Next I booted into TWRP and wiped caches, only difference here was I saw the android is optimizing apps 1 of 30 or what ever. Booted back up and still shows no Sim. I have also pulled and reinserted the Sim a few times.
Running Android M stock rooted on Sprint.
Attached a screen shot from in carrier settings. Still shows my imei and basebands so I'm assuming the efs is ok

Same here, the only difference is that I just flashed a custom ROM for the first time on my nexus 5 and found about this issue. I tried DU and CM 12.1 and all of them have this issue. With CM i got data after while with a NO SIM CARD error but it was very slow and only where LTE was available. I went back to stock and data is working again.
Try the sim card in another phone and try someone else's sim card in yours.

Sim works in other phones and whatever Sim I put in nexus isn't detected at all. I've tried T-Mobile and a at&t sim. I have had service reappear twice since this post. And only after shutting down the phone and letting it sit 45 mins to a hour.

This sounds like a hardware issue affecting the SIM card reader. Perhaps try to factory reset or back to Android Lollipop if you like.

I have been getting a no SIM error on my Verizon Note 5. Probably happened 5 times in the past 2 weeks. Reboot temporarily fixes the problem.
Anyone else having a similar problem? I will probably try to get a new sim from Verizon.

No issue here. Have you re-inserted the SIM card? If that doesn't help take it to Verizon.

Yeah, that was the first thing I did. It happened 3 times yesterday. I will call and get a new sim.

Same problem here. Was really bad last week and now hasn't happened for a couple of days.
I ended up getting a new sim card yesterday from Verizon

Happens to me at least 2-3 a week. Also drops from 4G to 3g, and sometimes my service doesn't even work. A coworker who has a Note 4 on Verizon mentions he has to restart his phone every few days as well because his connection just goes out sometime. I don't know if it's a software issue or if Verizon is just being ****ty right now
I finally got the sim replaced today. Hopefully this will fix it. Really don't want to reset the phone or exchange it.

I have had a new sim for a day now. The error has not popped up again yet. I will check in again in a couple days.

I was having the issue quite regular and, took my sim out and cleaned it (wiped) off what looked like dirt and have not had the issue yet.

Have you resolved your issue yet? I just got the error again. It's been weeks since I've had it

I had the error once or twice since I swapped Sims. I have not had it happen again since that last post.
The only thing I did is clean the sim card and blow out the sim port.

I ended up going to get a new Sim and no more issues with it. I do see any times I lose data connection and then it reconnects.

I was at Verizon was out when my phone froze...waited 1.5hrs, when all needed to be done was hold the power button and the down volume button simultaneously to create a battery disconnect to reboot....I asked about this same issue as I was doing a system reboot when the Note 5 froze....she said the phone when not receiving service will automatically switch to "global" to maintain connection but can't switch back...need to go to settings->mobile networks->check the network mode to verify it's in the lte/cdma mode, if not select that.....IDK, it happened at my house where I have a network extender, so that shouldn't have happened.....saw this solution somewhere else....saying the slot may be a little loose causing the connection to be unreliable, I'd start w/ something thinner than copy paper first....or wait for the "masters" to comment....:
If there is a little room for SIM movement in the slot then the contacts between the phone and the SIM will not meet causing this issue. Try to cut a piece of paper the size of the SIM card and place it on top of the SIM ( not on the side where the gold connector is). Insert both in the SIM slot then check if the problem still occurs.
This happen with my galaxy 4, and i changed the sim card, but the problem still happened, now my new galaxy note 5 start the same way. Sucks
Me too
I have been having the same issue twice a day now for at least a week. Guess I need to make a trip to the Verizon Store.
I had this same problem, started out once a week, moved up to a few times a week, then finally when it was a few times a day I went and got a new sim. They told me if this doesnt work bring it back in and they will give me a "new used" phone.
2 weeks without the issue, phone bumps the nightstand a little too hard and starts happening again.
I pulled out the sim tray, cut a piece of packing tape to match its shape. Put the sim in and layered the tape over it. Seems to have resolved 99% of my "no sim" issues. I say 99% because it happened once in about 6 weeks since I taped the sim in place.
So, I dropped my nexus 5 a few days ago. It had a cover but I think the damage is done.
I put in my T-Mobile sim card and it says no service. I took the phone to India last week. I put a local Vodafone sim card all works normal.
I come back to USA and put my T-Mobile sin card, no signal. I swapped with a new sim card, no go. T-Mobile support is not able to figure out what's going on.
I bought this phone when it was released back in Nov 2013. So it's out of warranty.
Did the drop damage a single radio of T-Mobile? Att sim card, sometimes it connects sometimes doesn't (not checked recently) .
Anything I can do get this fixed? Anyway I can test if a radio is active or hardware malfunction?
I have received ota update. Factory reset the phone multiple times. Still no go.
Thanks in advance.

You can try by flashing different radios

Edit: never mind, I reread OP, you already tried my idea.
Is it possible that something is loose inside?
I received my replacement phone a few days ago and haven't been able to update PRL or profile. Anybody else having this issue?
Same here....neither will update
have you tried ##72786# ?
I think you need your msl# for this tho.
I just updated both Profile and PRL with no issue. Using the replacement device with the green battery.

Anybody have a fix i have the same problem i factory reset three times and i reset the prl and now it goes to hands free activation and it wont activate cause i keep getting sprint omadm error
Call sprint. They probably have to reactivate the device.
Reset the phone and it broke it! Wouldn't activate. Waiting on a new one.
am in the same boat called sprint three times and went to a sprint store it would not activate
