Software (ease of use, features, etc) - Xiaomi Mi 5 Real Life Review

When you hand your phone to granny to take a photo of you, can she get the job done? Rate this thread to express how you deem the Xiaomi Mi 5's camera software. A higher rating indicates that the software is easy to use, fast, uncluttered, and inclusive of advanced features for when you need them.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

The native ability to prevent apps from auto starting is a real battery life saver. It allows you to use Facebook and Messenger without chewing up your battery when you put the phone down.
MIUI has a love/hate relationship with users outside of China, but it's so good looking you always want to go back to it.

I like how MIUI handle apps permission, with complimentary to Marshmallow system.
But if you use their non-global ROM, it is really annoying to not being able to sync your Google's contact and calendar.
I do understand that this is China's official policy, so either you work around it (using non-google contact and calendar account) or you switch side and use MiCloud apps.

Sorry but what are you talking about?!
You can download an app called "google installer" from the Xiaomi app store. From within that app you can download most services/apps related to google!
My wife has a xiaomi minote, still on original chinese rom, and it has all google services running including contact's and calendar's sync.

Which version does she use?
When I used the original 7.2.4 global ROM that came with my Mi 5 (64 GB), the sync worked. But after I changed it with 7.2.12 china ROM, it doesn't sync calendar and contact anymore. I have tried to flash/install latest sync adapters, but those 2 just won't sync.
I also found google installer "fixer" for apps updating issue but did find any for fixing the contact/calendar sync issue.
My Mi 5 has actually been returned to seller because it suddenly died and cannot be charged. I can flash 7.2.13 china ROM, 7.2.4 global ROM, and 6.3.17 dev ROM via fastboot, but it just won't turned on.

I'm having more issues than i can count with the software...
Dont get me wrong, the phone is great, but the software is just... annoying.
First, app chrashes and i mean allot, facebook, snapchat pretty much everything.
Then there's the fact that some apps (like snapchat) wont show notifications when i get a new snap, i use the chinese rom as of right now, and im hugely dissapointed :/
Good phone with half baked software i hope these issues will be resolved

Too much heating issues and then my phone has a lot of random freezes and >2 gb ram is always in use due to some reason. The software is turning out to be a major setback and I wish I had purchased the moto x pure instead. Waiting to root and flash CM. Hate to see SD820 going to waste

After some time i got myself in an apk install frenzy. So if you can, and still have the problems with sync,
reflash the rom you prefer
Follow the steps mentioned with the mi app store. (Search for Google, click the blue paw with du in it)
Install and let it run.
Then check the permissions and make sure all Google services and apps have permissions.
What made my calendar sync appear, was installing Google calendar! Removed it after my miui calendar synced with Google
I got it working on all three miui roms. (Dev, china, global.)
Good luck

Many issues can be resolved with changing permissions and notification access.
True it's annoying to not have apps automatically do what they should, but once you got the permissions sorted, and the notification access running properly, check battery saving and background data settings.
No app crashes, no sudden freezes, nothing at all on my mi5 32gb, with Chinese dev rom.
But i had to do a little tweaking [emoji1]

Well to get my syncing going on, permissions like access to accounts by Google apps, reading contacts info etc. Notifications access for whatsapp, inbox and such.
I still have a delay in some apps like Viber and whatsapp, but hey, got my bootloader unlocked going to cm13 now.
Not worrying about miui restrictions anymore.

[All roms][Sharing] Huge battery saver!

Google think that almost every device running android, is their device. Therefore they implemented a service within Google Play Services that will connect your device often to the Google and it will drain more battery then needed.
NOTE:
I tried a method that was shown on i think this forum or another one. I can't remember which one it was, and i cant find the thread either.
So before i am going to start this, i wanna thank the guy from the original thread for this, even if i dont know where i can find you. I am only sharing this so i take NO CREDITS.
I repeat, i am ONLY sharing this.
+ Works with:
- AOSP roms
- TW roms
- Well, basicly all android running devices :fingers-crossed:
To start with:
- Turn of location settings
- Go to settings, accounts and go to your google account.
+ go to advertisements and untick the toggle that says that Google takes care of your advertisements.
Most important:
- Download Adaway (latest) from HERE.
Thank you @mrRobinson for this awesome app!
- Open adAway and provide Adaway root access.
- Press the menu button and go to your own custom list.
- Now add a line by pressing the + button in the upper right of the screen.
- Add the following line < mtalk.google.com >
- Make sure the the checkmark is ON with the "mtalk.google.com" line.
- Now go back to the homescreen of adAway, apply the patch.
Note: According to the maker of the original thread, this seems to be the server that your device is always trying to communicate with. So by blacklisting this URL, there is no connection anymore.
Note 2: Cyanogenmod (and maybe other AOSP or GE users) are experiencing that the Blue highlighted WI-FI icon and the blue highlighted antenna icon are now GREY after applying this.
This is because you are not connected anymore to the google servers.
Note 3: Keep in mind that you can still manual synchronise your calander, contacts, Gmail, and other Google account related.

This (syncing) only applies for manual updates. Leaving the entry in Adaway will disable auto-updates. Not a viable option for me, am not going to manually refresh Google apps...

Thanks for the heads up.
Thanks for this.
I don't think Ad away works as it should though.
It says its syncing and merging with my current hosts file but after doing that my hosts file goes from 1.4mb to 700kb. So all its doing is deleting stuff. Weird

I always delete GooglePlayServices and never have any problems with apps updating.
I still get notifications in my status bar telling me when there is an app update available in the Play Store and also still get my Gmail notifications in my status bar.
Syncing works perfectly and so does Maps, Google Search, YouTube etc.
I actually can't see ANY reason to have GooglePlayServices installed.
All my Google apps still function perfectly without it.
And I no longer have RAM wasted and battery used up by this annoying app!!
My advice to everyone, delete it, it's not needed at all.

Was pretty euphoric when I read this so immediately disabled Play Services and rebooted like a happy little kid
That level of joy didn't last long:
Maps, Calendar, Keep, Youtube, these all need G.P.S. to function properly. Maybe even more apps but this is where I stopped.
Needless to say turned it back on again. This, as well, is not a viable option for me

That's odd, I don't get Google Maps requesting Play services on my device.
I do get one of those notifications after wiping cache and dalvik cache though, I just swipe it away and carry on as normal.
After you swiped them away can you still use the apps requesting it?
For example when I first boot up YouTube after wiping cache it says it needs PlayServices to run but I just ignore and cancel it.
I have never lost any YouTube functionality at all.

How to get messages in the latest default Facebook app

Hey everyone I figured out a workaround for the whole Facebook forcing you to use Messenger app. This is for Android only so sorry iOS...
Go to Settings > Security and check Unknown Sources.
This is important because you need to download the apps from the web.
**BTW in case something bad happens to your devices which I'm almost positive nothing will I'm not responsible.**
Okay now delete your Facebook app.
Then go here: http://facebook.en.uptodown.com/android/old
And go all the way down to the bottom of the screen and download the oldest version of Facebook. Install it and sign in.
Now keep installing every version of Facebook from the bottom up and make sure just to click on the messages tab to make sure it works on every version of Facebook. This will let you keep the messaging option in the default app for the newest version! When an update is available I recommend you update from the website rather than the Play Store. Haven't tried it yet because there isn't an update and I don't know if it will still work.
Hope this is useful! Good luck

[Q] Google play services and google services framework

Guys, I'm losing my mind over their wake and battery use. I'm on Slim 8.0 and franco r63 and already done the following:
Yeah, so I've turned OFF 'wake' in privacy manager, I've cancelled 'wake' permission in Android Tuner, I've disabled ads / location activity, and turned off sync and STILL I get ~40% drain from stinking GOOGLE SERVICES!!
Last night was last straw of me, so I wiped / reflashed SLIM 8.0 and franco kernel r63, set max CPU to ~1450, max GPU to ~380, downvolt ~25ma and waiting to see result.
WHY are google services such a PITA when it comes to WAKE and BATTERY USE when I've obviously disabled their ability to both WAKE and COMMUNICATE?
It's driven me absolutely BATTY. My wife's S4 has the same issue and I'm about to be DONE with all Google crap on her phone also.
I've google the issues and they are THOUSANDS of reports of similar problems.
If ANYBODY has a better idea I'd really appreciate it. Different ROM, different kernel, ANYTHING.
UPDATE: 4 hours 37 minutes > 90% left... with a lot of 9gagging in that time
Battery help thread linked in my signature.
Had the issue earlier today. Settings > Storage > Clear Cache > Reboot seems to have worked.
Make sure to not disable GPS, doing so for some reason will have that process constantly scan for location and keeping your device awake.
Sent via Telnet
Never heard of the 'GPS on' trick, but I checked location and no apps have requested location.
I tried to load a 'mini Gapps' package for SLIM but it's same story, device NEVER sleeps. No sync, no location, disabled 'wake' for the services, everything... glad I backed up the system with NO Gapps because I'll likely be restoring...
Really, really, really pathetic that SO many people have this program. What the hell is wrong with google??
Im convinced google play services is nsa spyware. Anyone care to prove me wrong? I would feel bette if you could. I have uninstalled it several times and it WILL NOT GO AWAY. And it uses more permissions than any other app I have. It will not stop running. It behaves like a virus in my opinion. Am I just a conspiracy nut?

1. Google uses it for things like Analytics
2. Most apps depend on it as a framework to do things, hence the permissions
3. It updates in the background automatically
4. This is Android. Android means Google.
5. If you don't like that, switch to using the Amazon app store, or buy a crappy iOS device.
Well, I just removed it (it was a pita due to no recovery on phone so i gotta be delicate!) and maps still works. Thats the one app I cant live without. I havent checked everything yet but nothing I have used thus far seems affected. Used TB to remove market links.I use an alternate app store already. My phone runs MUCH faster. I will never own a crappy Iphone device!!!
Everything checked. All works.

Huawei Notification Bug

Hello, I am interested in getting a Honor 8 but as a user of a Honor 6 I need to know if they fixed the bug who most annoyed me, the notifications coming up only for the stock app and the ones on the battery managment white list (Facebook, Whatsapp, gReader), I tried every possible way to activate notification for normal apps and games and always failed, I could receive them only with the app always open in the background.
Can someone confirm if games like Fate Grand Order, Granblue Phantasy or app like Amazon, Line, APKpure notify as normal on Honor 8? Without using notifications apps or keeping the app on in the BG.
Thanks to whoever helps, this is a big factor for me in the decision to buy this device.

Of course I already tried that.
For being clear, I tried everything, different party launchers, notification apps activating every setting and disabling battery optimazion, etc.
I only haven't tried to install a app as system app because it requires root and I'm not doing that or closing the huawei battery mangment app because it woul create other problems.
I just want to know if Honor 8 had the bug fixed and normal apps give notifications, like games or similar unknown/low rated apps.

Every app not one installed on the device from Huawei from before I got it or not a message related one.
I had problems with whatsapp notifications, after a reset is the only app I got to work fine.
Facebook, Twitter and a few other apps about messaging and high rated in the play store like gReader or Avast always worked.
I recently discovered, when searching for a solution, that Huawei created a whitelist for apps in the their battery management program and every app not listed in it could not work, I tried every possible way to get notifications and not a single one worked.
That confused me, I can't find any explanation to this

So, you got to phone management, battery, protected apps, and selected the ones you wanted to avoid stopping when screen is off.
Also in phone manager, notification centre, you select all options (could leave banners off) for the apps you wanted.
And in phone manager, app auto-launch, you turn on the option for those apps.
I know doze in MM ROMs is tricky but still it works fine. I also noticed when restoring apps from a backup sometimes notifications for those apps don't work well.
I'll repeat it again.
I've.Tried.Everything.
I have this damn thing from 2 years.
I just only want to know if apps notifications work like they should on Honor 8 and most recent Huawei device, is the only thing stopping me from getting one, if the answer is no just tell me, I will go for another brand like Sony, Vernee or Samsung, maybe even Elephone, at least stock android doesn't have this bugs.
Every app will respond differently, but to adjust notifications on your phone, follow these instructions:
To set notifications for such an app, touch Settings > Apps, touch the app, and the touch Notifications.
Note: Setting notifications in Phone Manager is not supported for some apps. You can also adjust individual apps settings by going to the specific apps settings. (NS)

Notifications work fine in H7 and H8.
I'll stop repeating how I already set every setting on and it doesn't work because it seems like is useless and everyone is repeating their advices.
Could someone with H8 list some apps with working notifications? I could try to install them on mine and verify if they are on the white list or the new devices actually work as they should and every app notify.

Dear VooXoo, I think everyone got a bit confused since you posted this on the Honor 8 page. As everyone else mentioned, the notifications are NOT A PROBLEM on Honor 8. Yes they were a problem on your device : the Honor 6 and even Honor 7, but they are not anymore.
I would like some proof, because some people say isn't a problem even on older devices.

I think I'll just install a custom ROM

Voiding the warranty will not be a pleasant thing to do, but I'm annoyed as hell by some of the things that are happening in ZenUI:
- Disabling Google apps i.e. chrome, duo, YouTube is futile since the apps turn back on again.
- Since chrome can't be permanently disabled I can't click on links in apps such as Sync for Reddit without chrome opening automatically asking me to use Chrome.
- Some accessibility settings that were turned on randomly turn themselves off after a reboot. In my case it happened to a password manager that was suddenly no longer able to auto fill fields in my browser.
- I can't seem to switch songs with my volume control . Simply a feature I really miss.
I'll give them one update to see if either of the above improves. If not I'll install a custom ROM.

I was also having a fit trying to disable Chrome, Duo, Photos and Youtube - they were all just being enabled again, rather quickly.
It seemed to happen once via Playstore downloading languages for something, could never catch exactly what triggered this.
Anyway, after several reboots and redisabling, it hasn't happened for two days now.
Don't miss disabling the 3 Facebook system apps.
They at least have remained disabled.

Don't miss disabling the 3 Facebook system apps.
They at least have remained disabled.

You had 3 Facebook system apps on your device? I had the normal Facebook app which I was able to fully delete.

You have them too.
Look in Settings/apps/, choose "all apps', then in 3 dots at upper right choose "show system".
Then scroll down to "face".
I found them via the firewall app Netguard, recommended.

Lookie here.... Thanks. This prompts me even more to install a custom ROM.

I don't agree.
I think Asus has done a very good job with this one.
All the custom roms seem to have all sorts of various problems.
The 4 Google apps Asus had to preinstall to keep on the right side of Google.
As long as they finally stay disabled, I'm ok with that.
The Fakebook stuff is more serious, IMHO they made a bad judgement call installing the Fakebook stuff.
(Maybe they get paid for doing that?)
But the apps don't seem to do anything while disabled, I have Netguard monitoring them.
And I haven't found anything else problematic at all yet.
.
Advice from some 5-7 year old threads just came in:
Disabling the app "Google Partner Setup" will stop the automatic re-enabling of other apps.
I have not tried this, yet anyway.

Thanks for this. I didn't stumble upon such a thread when I was searching for a solution. Let's see how it goes.
As for ZenUI, it's definitely not the worst and I like how little bloatware is included. Perhaps I'm a bit quick with my judgement and I'll wait for a next update.
The fact that apps that require accessibility settings cease to function after a reboot until I simply open that app is a huge pain in the ass tho. Examples include: bitwarden and swiftly switch (pro). Hope this gets fixed. I was wrong in saying that the accessibility toggle automatically turns off. I assumed that because said apps don't function as intended after a reboot.
As for custom ROMs I'll definitely wait. I went through the threads and there seem to be quite a couple of issues that need to be ironed out first. Flashing a ROM now might open new doors to other problems that are bigger than the ones I'm facing right now.

As someone who just spent a week trying to get LOS installed and is going back to stock, I can testify that custom ROMs are not ready yet. All of the necessary elements (recovery, ROM, gapps, etc.) have multiple showstopper issues. Add on to that the confusion caused by A/B partitions. I've never kept a phone stock before, but I'm flashing stock and will check back in 6 months to see if custom ROMs are stable by then.

I don't use those apps, but have you set them to autostart and to "no battery optimization"?

Yep, exactly my thoughts.

Agree with disabling of accessibility features.
I use FliudNG for gestures (highly recommended especially for 6z) and I have to disable and re-enable it's accessibility, then re-enable the app again after a reboot.

So strange. In my case the only thing I NEED to do for those apps to work is simply open the app and close it again. I haven't tried FluidNG yet but I expect the same results.
Edit: tried it. Same results indeed.

FWIW I have three facebook apps listed (after uninstalling the main app) - "Facebook App Installer", "Facebook App Manager" and "Facebook Services". Don't know what these do, so I just disabled them. They're disabled now so I'm hoping they can't get their podgy fingers involved in anything?

Yep, blocking them was recommended by someone already earlier in this thread. Good find either way.

I have been tracking their potential attempts at internet access via Netguard, and there is none.
So they do seem to stay comfortably disabled.
The other preloaded apps that I repeatedly had to disable have also remained disabled for a week now, so that problem seems to have gone away.
(Or are they just waiting for a wakeup signal from the mothership? )
Have someone tried disabling apps using Island or similar Android-for-work software? It says that it can work without root by setting the software as a device owner using adb... Because with every possible app disabled (GP, FB, etc) their folders on Internal Storage still recreated after removal.
