Huawei Notification Bug - Honor 8 Questions & Answers

Hello, I am interested in getting a Honor 8 but as a user of a Honor 6 I need to know if they fixed the bug who most annoyed me, the notifications coming up only for the stock app and the ones on the battery managment white list (Facebook, Whatsapp, gReader), I tried every possible way to activate notification for normal apps and games and always failed, I could receive them only with the app always open in the background.
Can someone confirm if games like Fate Grand Order, Granblue Phantasy or app like Amazon, Line, APKpure notify as normal on Honor 8? Without using notifications apps or keeping the app on in the BG.
Thanks to whoever helps, this is a big factor for me in the decision to buy this device.

I tried them all, it doesn't work, I just want to know if people are getting notifications on Honor 8 because the 6 is done.

My friend receives notification all the time on his honor 8, also I will reach members and ask them

Honor 8 Notifications & Pop-Ups
Hello, we appreciate your concern about the notification settings on your Honor 8 device. Please note: some setting notifications in Phone Manager is not supported for some apps. To set notifications for such an app, touch Settings > Apps, touch the app, and the touch Notifications. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to our knowledgeable Honor Customer Service Team at +1-844-524-6667 and they can assist you further. (NS)

Of course I already tried that.
For being clear, I tried everything, different party launchers, notification apps activating every setting and disabling battery optimazion, etc.
I only haven't tried to install a app as system app because it requires root and I'm not doing that or closing the huawei battery mangment app because it woul create other problems.
I just want to know if Honor 8 had the bug fixed and normal apps give notifications, like games or similar unknown/low rated apps.

What app is not getting notified?
Did you do any official update? If so, did you backup (Huawei backup), factory reset and restore?

Every app not one installed on the device from Huawei from before I got it or not a message related one.
I had problems with whatsapp notifications, after a reset is the only app I got to work fine.
Facebook, Twitter and a few other apps about messaging and high rated in the play store like gReader or Avast always worked.
I recently discovered, when searching for a solution, that Huawei created a whitelist for apps in the their battery management program and every app not listed in it could not work, I tried every possible way to get notifications and not a single one worked.

That confused me, I can't find any explanation to this

So, you got to phone management, battery, protected apps, and selected the ones you wanted to avoid stopping when screen is off.
Also in phone manager, notification centre, you select all options (could leave banners off) for the apps you wanted.
And in phone manager, app auto-launch, you turn on the option for those apps.
I know doze in MM ROMs is tricky but still it works fine. I also noticed when restoring apps from a backup sometimes notifications for those apps don't work well.

I'll repeat it again.
I've.Tried.Everything.
I have this damn thing from 2 years.
I just only want to know if apps notifications work like they should on Honor 8 and most recent Huawei device, is the only thing stopping me from getting one, if the answer is no just tell me, I will go for another brand like Sony, Vernee or Samsung, maybe even Elephone, at least stock android doesn't have this bugs.

Every app will respond differently, but to adjust notifications on your phone, follow these instructions:
To set notifications for such an app, touch Settings > Apps, touch the app, and the touch Notifications.
Note: Setting notifications in Phone Manager is not supported for some apps. You can also adjust individual apps settings by going to the specific apps settings. (NS)

Notifications work fine in H7 and H8.

I'll stop repeating how I already set every setting on and it doesn't work because it seems like is useless and everyone is repeating their advices.
Could someone with H8 list some apps with working notifications? I could try to install them on mine and verify if they are on the white list or the new devices actually work as they should and every app notify.

Dear VooXoo, I think everyone got a bit confused since you posted this on the Honor 8 page. As everyone else mentioned, the notifications are NOT A PROBLEM on Honor 8. Yes they were a problem on your device : the Honor 6 and even Honor 7, but they are not anymore.

I would like some proof, because some people say isn't a problem even on older devices.

[Q] How to stop app update nags?

There are quite a few apps I downloaded from the Market to try, didn't care for and deleted. Now I keep getting nagged to install updates for these deleted apps. Ditto deleted crapware apps after rooting.
Is there a way to stop these nags for apps I no longer have on my phone? And still get update advisories for ones I kept?
I saw a thread about doing this with Amazon's store with a followup that the fix was automatically unfixed on sign-in, but I am primarily interested in deleted Market apps.
TIA for any help and advice on this!
Sounds a bit dodgy. I've never had 1 single update notification for an app that's not installed on my phone. It doesn't make sense.
Something's wrong there. You've got a bigger problem to fix than just some notifications.

What do you mean it's dodgy? I'm not making it up!
It happens all the time.
I have read experiences of other users identical to mine, but no solutions.
Both with Android Market and with Amazon AppStore.
You download and install apps, try them but then delete them, but continue to get nags to update them.
What is this bigger problem you are suggesting?
Thanks for your interest.
I'm not suggesting you're making it up, just that it sounds very unusual. I've never heard of anyone having updates for apps they've uninstalled.
As for the "bigger problem", wait and see if you get any decent advice, but if not then I'd recommend a factory reset.

Solution!
Well, this is amazing!
I stumbled on a totally non-Geek solution elsewhere:
Just Turn off Global Notifications of Market updates --
1. open Market on the phone
2. Press Menu Key
3. Select "Settings"
4. Use the drop down bar in the Notifications area to disable notifications.
I can still see notifications of updates when I open Market, but I don't get bugged and can just pick and choose the ones I use. Plus, I can still set the ones I choose to individually auto-update if I want.
Eureka!
Or am I celebrating too soon?

Removing/Disabling Discovery "Feature" in SnapChat 9.11+

Howdy all!
Earlier this year, Snapchat introduced a new "Feature" called Discovery that allows you to see live events around the world, as well as sponsored stories from their partners. These can not be disabled in the 9.12 update, and previous to that, they required you to "hide" each of them every time from your feed. There are potentially thousands of these events on your feed, and they drain battery, drain your data, or both! Since SnapChat refuses to allow their users to disable the "feature", many turned to third party apps to get rid of them.
Most (if not all) 3rd party apps are against Snapchat ToS, because they usually allow you to save received snaps, and share images from your gallery (aka. pictures that may not be of you). Your account can be banned permanently from using 3rd party apps, and since they've been really hitting it hard with cracking down on people using them, it's not a viable solution to figuring out how to block the Discovery "feature".
I found the solution! This solution IS COMPLETELY FREE for one, as well it will keep you using the official app, so no 3rd party apps will be used. You'll also NOT be using any xposed modules, so nothing ToS breaking like saving snaps or whatever, either
Requirements:
ROOTED Android 4.4+, 5.0+
Titanium Backup Premium - Free Version and Premium Unlock Key
Latest Snapchat APK - Google Play or APK Mirror
Snapchat 8.1.2 APK - APK Mirror
How to:
Install the latest official client from the links above, and login as normal. Close the app once you're logged in, and swipe it away from recents.
Open up Titanium Backup Premium, and back up the Snapchat app.
Uninstall the Snapchat app.
Install the 8.1.2 version (linked above).
Open up Titanium Backup Premium, and restore ONLY THE DATA PORTION of the backup. DO NOT RESTORE APP OR APP+DATA!
Once successful, close TiBu and open up Snapchat
Notes:
You will get a notice from "teamsnapchat" that says your version is out of date, and that it will stop working shortly, however it's not limited in any way for me. I've sent and received snaps from friends, chatted with friends, and even received story updates from other friends. All of it is working, including push notifications of new stuff.
I've not seen or heard anything Discovery wise from the app, nothing appears on my list of friends, and lastly, the data/battery problems are all but gone since it's not background syncing infinitely.
My screen does turn on whenever I receive a new notification, and I can't seem to disable it. I've unchecked the option to wake screen in settings, however it re-checks itself upon save/exit. I'm OK with this though, since my lockscreen timeout is 5 seconds.
Nice work but it is a bit misleading to say that this is removing/disabling the discovery feature in Snapchat 9.11 when the underlying solution here is to downgrade Snapchat to before the feature was enforced or introduced.

It's not really a downgrade entirely though, since if you downgrade to 8.1.2 without the backup/restore data operation, then it refuses to let you login.
You're downgrading, then upgrading partially..
Pretty sure it doesn't work on 5.1.1. I get an error saying it won't work on this version of your Operating system.

No, you're making the downgrade possible due to restoring the data of the newer version of Snapchat. Its a tweak to make the downngrade possible. Restoring the data doesn't brint back the new version.
I find the title misleading aswell, since you are not removing nor disabling the discovery feature at all.
It isn't Snapchat 9.11+ either when you downgrade to 8.1.2.
Its not really your solution neither, as this is was the default solution to use Snapprefs and simular mods before it was recently updated to work woth the latest Snapchat versions.
Doesn't work for me unfortunately. Automatically logs me out upon opening Snapchat 8 even with version 9 data restored.
After installing the current version of snapchat and logging in, try to go to settings and uncheck the option for Wake Screen, THEN proceed with the downgrade instructions. I haven't tried it, but it might work for you if your screen keeps waking once you downgrade.
I'll try this once they release root for my phone
To solve your wake screen problem i think all you have to do is backup the data AFTER you uncheck wake screen then restore the data to the downgraded app.
Good tip and much appreciated, although this has been known. And I agree it is misleading since the app is being downgraded and we are not actually disabling the feature in Snapchat 9.11+.
Again, the post is appreciated, but I think you should edit the thread title.
Doesn't work. After restore data and open Snapchat app, my account was disconnected and when I try to do login again, I receive a message saying that Snapchat is not updated and I need to update to login (something like this).
I usually just install the 8.1.2 update over the latest snapchat ☺. Data restore hasn't been working too fine with me ...
Thread closed per OP request. Method no longer works.

Why don't calendar notifications work in Android (in general)?

Lately, I have been buying and returning lots of phones because I never found one that works. 4 of the phones that I have tried came with the same failure: although the settings are well set, calendar notifications sometimes work and sometimes don't. The aforementioned phones were:
- Asus Zenfone Max (Android 6)
- Asus Zenfone 3 Zoom (Android 6)
- Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge (Android 7)
- Samsung Galaxy S8+ (Android 7)
It's ridiculous that despite of the phone I buy, I never get rid of the annoying calendar failure. Can someone tell me what's happening here and whether is there any Android phone brand which doesn't fall into this failure?
If you have some background utility closing processes to free memory, for example, and if it includes your calendar, this may explain a lot. Otherwise, do you pause, freeze or greenify your calendar? If so exclude it from.
It looks like you calendar app is forced to close by something

I don't think that. I have had the failure even with the factory settings and without any application installed that has the ability to close other applications. The problem is in the Android OS itself because it happens with different brands and with factory settings.
I can confirm that the failure doesn't happen with Android 5 but does with 6 and 7. The thing that I don't understand is why do all the phones come out of the box with the version 6 and 7 and are unable to get downgraded.
The calendar notifications of my phone, Huawei Mate 9(Android 7), do work well.
Settings - Notification & status bar - Notification management - Calendar, the option 'Allow Notifications' should be enabled.
Just for your reference.

How many times have you used calendar reminders?
Perhaps I should give the Huawei brand a try, but I found the same failure in Asus and Samsung and it is pretty much casualty, and that drives me to the thought that it is Android fault so Huawei would be affected as well as all the other brands.
All calendar reminder apps wirk on my Note 4, but i'm on 5. 1.1

Yes, it seems like versions prior to 6 are exempt of the failure. But it is very difficult to find a Lollipop phone in stock nowadays. And in versions 6 and 7 it seems like the failure hasn't got a solution.

I think I'll just install a custom ROM

Voiding the warranty will not be a pleasant thing to do, but I'm annoyed as hell by some of the things that are happening in ZenUI:
- Disabling Google apps i.e. chrome, duo, YouTube is futile since the apps turn back on again.
- Since chrome can't be permanently disabled I can't click on links in apps such as Sync for Reddit without chrome opening automatically asking me to use Chrome.
- Some accessibility settings that were turned on randomly turn themselves off after a reboot. In my case it happened to a password manager that was suddenly no longer able to auto fill fields in my browser.
- I can't seem to switch songs with my volume control . Simply a feature I really miss.
I'll give them one update to see if either of the above improves. If not I'll install a custom ROM.

I was also having a fit trying to disable Chrome, Duo, Photos and Youtube - they were all just being enabled again, rather quickly.
It seemed to happen once via Playstore downloading languages for something, could never catch exactly what triggered this.
Anyway, after several reboots and redisabling, it hasn't happened for two days now.
Don't miss disabling the 3 Facebook system apps.
They at least have remained disabled.

I found them via the firewall app Netguard, recommended.

I don't agree.
I think Asus has done a very good job with this one.
All the custom roms seem to have all sorts of various problems.
The 4 Google apps Asus had to preinstall to keep on the right side of Google.
As long as they finally stay disabled, I'm ok with that.
The Fakebook stuff is more serious, IMHO they made a bad judgement call installing the Fakebook stuff.
(Maybe they get paid for doing that?)
But the apps don't seem to do anything while disabled, I have Netguard monitoring them.
And I haven't found anything else problematic at all yet.
.
Advice from some 5-7 year old threads just came in:
Disabling the app "Google Partner Setup" will stop the automatic re-enabling of other apps.
I have not tried this, yet anyway.

Thanks for this. I didn't stumble upon such a thread when I was searching for a solution. Let's see how it goes.
As for ZenUI, it's definitely not the worst and I like how little bloatware is included. Perhaps I'm a bit quick with my judgement and I'll wait for a next update.
The fact that apps that require accessibility settings cease to function after a reboot until I simply open that app is a huge pain in the ass tho. Examples include: bitwarden and swiftly switch (pro). Hope this gets fixed. I was wrong in saying that the accessibility toggle automatically turns off. I assumed that because said apps don't function as intended after a reboot.
As for custom ROMs I'll definitely wait. I went through the threads and there seem to be quite a couple of issues that need to be ironed out first. Flashing a ROM now might open new doors to other problems that are bigger than the ones I'm facing right now.

As someone who just spent a week trying to get LOS installed and is going back to stock, I can testify that custom ROMs are not ready yet. All of the necessary elements (recovery, ROM, gapps, etc.) have multiple showstopper issues. Add on to that the confusion caused by A/B partitions. I've never kept a phone stock before, but I'm flashing stock and will check back in 6 months to see if custom ROMs are stable by then.

Agree with disabling of accessibility features.
I use FliudNG for gestures (highly recommended especially for 6z) and I have to disable and re-enable it's accessibility, then re-enable the app again after a reboot.

FWIW I have three facebook apps listed (after uninstalling the main app) - "Facebook App Installer", "Facebook App Manager" and "Facebook Services". Don't know what these do, so I just disabled them. They're disabled now so I'm hoping they can't get their podgy fingers involved in anything?

I have been tracking their potential attempts at internet access via Netguard, and there is none.
So they do seem to stay comfortably disabled.
The other preloaded apps that I repeatedly had to disable have also remained disabled for a week now, so that problem seems to have gone away.
(Or are they just waiting for a wakeup signal from the mothership? )
Have someone tried disabling apps using Island or similar Android-for-work software? It says that it can work without root by setting the software as a device owner using adb... Because with every possible app disabled (GP, FB, etc) their folders on Internal Storage still recreated after removal.

Alternative SMS apps stop working, only native SMS app stay alive, why?

Hello,
I don't have any problems to receive SMS with the native application.
With other apps (QKSMS, Chomp, etc), it works for a moment, but after the night for example the SMS do not arrive anymore.
If I launch the app, it works for a few hours, but the previously sent SMS are definitely lost.
It's like if the system kills the SMS service as long as it's not the native one. But I thought this was Android to manage SMS reception, not the apps... I find nothing on the Web. Do you have any idea of a solution?
(I don't think it's specific but this happens on my tablet Lenovo Tab4 with Android 7.1 rooted.)
Try removing the SMS app you are using from battery optimization. Settings -> battery -> 3-dot menu (I think that's the location on 7).
Thanks, but already tried. I guess these apps are not designed to stay in memory, just receveid a notification from the system.
I don't understand why it seems that I'm the only one with this problem!
Open the problem app, then go home. Open the recents menu, does the app have a padlock icon? If so, lock it. That should prevent the OS from killing the app.
It seems to work. But I still may can close the app by inadvertence, this is not a real solution. Why am I the only one who must do this? :'(
Thanks for your time, I think it's that or using the default app, no other choice.

It's all about battery life. The aggressive methods of killing apps varies from manufacturer and device. Huawei, Samsung, OnePlus and Xiaomi are extremely aggressive at killing off apps. Android 9/10 is more aggressive than 7.
OK, it may be Lenovo the guilty.
I write too fast. It does not work also by locking the app in the recents menu.
So I'm forced to use native application.
Thanks again
PS: I will try by putting a widget of QKSMS, it seems to help...
