Why don't calendar notifications work in Android (in general)? - General Questions and Answers

Lately, I have been buying and returning lots of phones because I never found one that works. 4 of the phones that I have tried came with the same failure: although the settings are well set, calendar notifications sometimes work and sometimes don't. The aforementioned phones were:
- Asus Zenfone Max (Android 6)
- Asus Zenfone 3 Zoom (Android 6)
- Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge (Android 7)
- Samsung Galaxy S8+ (Android 7)
It's ridiculous that despite of the phone I buy, I never get rid of the annoying calendar failure. Can someone tell me what's happening here and whether is there any Android phone brand which doesn't fall into this failure?

If you have some background utility closing processes to free memory, for example, and if it includes your calendar, this may explain a lot. Otherwise, do you pause, freeze or greenify your calendar? If so exclude it from.

I don't think that. I have had the failure even with the factory settings and without any application installed that has the ability to close other applications. The problem is in the Android OS itself because it happens with different brands and with factory settings.
I can confirm that the failure doesn't happen with Android 5 but does with 6 and 7. The thing that I don't understand is why do all the phones come out of the box with the version 6 and 7 and are unable to get downgraded.

The calendar notifications of my phone, Huawei Mate 9(Android 7), do work well.
Settings - Notification & status bar - Notification management - Calendar, the option 'Allow Notifications' should be enabled.
Just for your reference.

How many times have you used calendar reminders?
Perhaps I should give the Huawei brand a try, but I found the same failure in Asus and Samsung and it is pretty much casualty, and that drives me to the thought that it is Android fault so Huawei would be affected as well as all the other brands.

All calendar reminder apps wirk on my Note 4, but i'm on 5. 1.1

Yes, it seems like versions prior to 6 are exempt of the failure. But it is very difficult to find a Lollipop phone in stock nowadays. And in versions 6 and 7 it seems like the failure hasn't got a solution.

What Would You Like to See in Ice Cream Sandwich?

I'm pretty sure we're all hype about ICS, and wondering how long it'll take to get to our respective devices. I know one of the features will be head tracking, but I'm curious as to what you guys think will be in the update, hell, or even what you would like to see.
And also, what you think will be the minimum requirements for ICS.

I would LOVE to see a proxy authentication layer in networks. I'm uncertain why Google didn't think of this being they had business users in mind while Android was in development. Windows Mobile allows for a proxy authentication in every 'modem' layer.
Does anyone know if Google is going to add this very important feature to Ice Cream Sandwich?
Thanks.
Cole
Some things I want in ICS (but we probably won't get 'em):
General:
- Two way call recording.
- Fix the SMS delivery reports bug.
- Hosts file editor.
- Option to remove bloatware without voiding warranty.
- Make root access an option in the Android settings menu instead of having to mess with third party hacks.
User interface:
- Tapping on notification bar entries (such as the clock, battery icon, or network indicator) should open the corresponding app or settings screen.
- Have a pin lock screen without slider lock screen (like we had before Froyo).
- A "close" button on the keyboard, because long-tapping the menu button doesn't cut it and the back button is too unpredictable.
Privacy & security:
- Full control over app permissions, LBE-style.
- Built-in firewall that starts before anything else so it doesn't leak on boot like DroidWall does.
- "Read phone state" and "read phone identity" should be separate permissions.
Connections:
- Show which WiFi network I'm connected to in the notification dropdown and on the stock lockscreen.
- Disconnect from data/WiFi/GPS/bluetooth straight from the stock lockscreen.
Market:
- Use the Android Market without having to open up background data.
- Market: option to revert to previous version of apps if updates break stuff.
Calendar:
- Custom reminder times in Google Calendar, an option to set reminders during events (now we can only set them before events), and persistent reminders without having to use workaround apps like Calendar Snooze.
- Google Calendar & Google Tasks integrated in one app and mixed in one widget.
- Option to autosync calendar without autosyncing contacts or Gmail. Option to sync contacts without syncing calendar and mail. And all the other combinations.
Location:
- One click toggling of network location.
- Full offline navigation for Google maps.
- Download bigger maps than the current 10x10 mile blocks. A 32 GB SD card is big enough to store the entire planet as vector maps.
- Port Nokia Maps to Android.
I would love to vanilla in my icecream sandwich.... Lmao
Dont know but i just felt like saying it.

[Q] S Health Ecosystem notifications on note 3

I am getting several notifications from "s health ecosystem" and I am wondering how to mute them. They are pointless and kind of ugly being that they have a triangle with an exclamation point in the middle of it. If you touch them they do nothing, and the explanation detail is truncated.
Anyone figure out a way to get rid of these? They seem to be triggered by data passing between the watch and the fitness app.
i have the same issue . now that i got the gear 2 neo at times it will get 70+ notifications
very annoying

I believe it's happens depending on your sync of smasung account to health app, i changed mine to sync every 6 houts and haven't gotten it yet. But yesterday non-stop i was like really!? lol
related to launcher?
It seems like these notifications are related to the fact that I'm using the Nova launcher instead of Samsung's, so I'm being warned about some nefarious third-party contact. I can't even get to S Health from Nova, but my Gear Fit seems to be trying to communicate with it. It's a bit if a nuisance that I can't get to S Health, because the Gear Fit Manager doesn't provide nearly as much functionality. I hate all this walled-garden nonsense...
UPDATE:
A footnote on the Samsung App site (use the three blue lines in the upper right or scroll down in the left nav to Device and Content > S Health): "As of April 2014, these S Health features are only available on the Galaxy S5. Soon they will also be available on other devices, via app updates." I wonder how long that will take?

Hmm, I am using Google experience launcher - so maybe it is a launcher issue. Anyone running TouchWiz having this problem.
On the note 3 you have to delete s-health and health services. side loading these cause problems with the fitness with gear app. if these aren't installed the fitness with gear app will sync with your samsung account and work fine. by installing both it causes conflict as both are more or less the same. Not sure why everyone is hell bent on having s-health as fitness with health works great. as for the notifications, that pops up when the app syncs your data to your samsung account. i have mine set at 12 hours. there is no way currently to stop the notifications only changing the time period it syncs. hope this helps.

I am having this same exact problem. Running stock touchwiz and not rooted.
Same problem here as well.
Is there a resolution to this issue?
This sucks, these are annoying. I might expect this kind of thing with a hack or custom rom but I am bone stock note 3 and this seems kind of ridiculous. Makes you wonder if anyone at Samsung actually used this thing for a week before releasing it.

Why isn't Google addressing the biggest issue of Android: autostart apps?

To me is the biggest issue I see in the system: I want to choose which apps can start themselves on boot and which can't.
For instance I'm currently having the Ryanair app starting itself each time after I have launched it one time despite the fact that I'm not even logged in. That's bad design and Google should give us a tool to protect ourselves and our battery from it.
It has already been done I'm on a Nexus 5X but I come from an Asus Zenfone 2 with lollipop that has an autostart manager app that works flawlessly.
The best thing to have would be the ability to choose which apps can stay in the background and which apps can't, just like they did with the apps authorizations but just having the previous request would be a huge step ahead imo

Huawei Notification Bug

Hello, I am interested in getting a Honor 8 but as a user of a Honor 6 I need to know if they fixed the bug who most annoyed me, the notifications coming up only for the stock app and the ones on the battery managment white list (Facebook, Whatsapp, gReader), I tried every possible way to activate notification for normal apps and games and always failed, I could receive them only with the app always open in the background.
Can someone confirm if games like Fate Grand Order, Granblue Phantasy or app like Amazon, Line, APKpure notify as normal on Honor 8? Without using notifications apps or keeping the app on in the BG.
Thanks to whoever helps, this is a big factor for me in the decision to buy this device.

I tried them all, it doesn't work, I just want to know if people are getting notifications on Honor 8 because the 6 is done.
My friend receives notification all the time on his honor 8, also I will reach members and ask them
Honor 8 Notifications & Pop-Ups
Hello, we appreciate your concern about the notification settings on your Honor 8 device. Please note: some setting notifications in Phone Manager is not supported for some apps. To set notifications for such an app, touch Settings > Apps, touch the app, and the touch Notifications. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to our knowledgeable Honor Customer Service Team at +1-844-524-6667 and they can assist you further. (NS)
Of course I already tried that.
For being clear, I tried everything, different party launchers, notification apps activating every setting and disabling battery optimazion, etc.
I only haven't tried to install a app as system app because it requires root and I'm not doing that or closing the huawei battery mangment app because it woul create other problems.
I just want to know if Honor 8 had the bug fixed and normal apps give notifications, like games or similar unknown/low rated apps.

What app is not getting notified?
Did you do any official update? If so, did you backup (Huawei backup), factory reset and restore?

Every app not one installed on the device from Huawei from before I got it or not a message related one.
I had problems with whatsapp notifications, after a reset is the only app I got to work fine.
Facebook, Twitter and a few other apps about messaging and high rated in the play store like gReader or Avast always worked.
I recently discovered, when searching for a solution, that Huawei created a whitelist for apps in the their battery management program and every app not listed in it could not work, I tried every possible way to get notifications and not a single one worked.
That confused me, I can't find any explanation to this

So, you got to phone management, battery, protected apps, and selected the ones you wanted to avoid stopping when screen is off.
Also in phone manager, notification centre, you select all options (could leave banners off) for the apps you wanted.
And in phone manager, app auto-launch, you turn on the option for those apps.
I know doze in MM ROMs is tricky but still it works fine. I also noticed when restoring apps from a backup sometimes notifications for those apps don't work well.
I'll repeat it again.
I've.Tried.Everything.
I have this damn thing from 2 years.
I just only want to know if apps notifications work like they should on Honor 8 and most recent Huawei device, is the only thing stopping me from getting one, if the answer is no just tell me, I will go for another brand like Sony, Vernee or Samsung, maybe even Elephone, at least stock android doesn't have this bugs.
Every app will respond differently, but to adjust notifications on your phone, follow these instructions:
To set notifications for such an app, touch Settings > Apps, touch the app, and the touch Notifications.
Note: Setting notifications in Phone Manager is not supported for some apps. You can also adjust individual apps settings by going to the specific apps settings. (NS)

Notifications work fine in H7 and H8.
I'll stop repeating how I already set every setting on and it doesn't work because it seems like is useless and everyone is repeating their advices.
Could someone with H8 list some apps with working notifications? I could try to install them on mine and verify if they are on the white list or the new devices actually work as they should and every app notify.

Dear VooXoo, I think everyone got a bit confused since you posted this on the Honor 8 page. As everyone else mentioned, the notifications are NOT A PROBLEM on Honor 8. Yes they were a problem on your device : the Honor 6 and even Honor 7, but they are not anymore.
I would like some proof, because some people say isn't a problem even on older devices.

Honor 8 - EMUI 4.1 - Chrome notifications

Hello,
Is anyone on Honor 8 / EMUI 4.1 able to get chrome notifications?
I've been checking Chrome settings and found nothing wrong, expect for the fact I don't seem to be able to add chrome to the list of apps that can ignore battery optimization, since it is not listed. I'm not sure if this is the reason though.
Please share your ideas / suggestions.
RM
It's because Chrome is a system app already so it is by default protected. Except it doesn't even work correctly probably because of their ram management, which kind of make this phone useless for receiving notification for me.
I tried adding Google Clock and S-Health to protected apps and also lock it in the "recent apps" menu, they still get forced close and the alarm didn't ring or it stopped counting steps.
I haven't used EMUI5 yet to know if it's fixed.
Hello!
Solution found! The hint (system app) of the previous post made me try this:
1-Uninstall Chrome (using TiBu - root needed)
2-Reinstall Chrome from Play Store
3-Configure settings to allow notifications from wanted pages
4-Add Chrome to the list of apps that can ignore battery optimizations
So far it is working as expected...
About the other notification issues I've faced before (Google Keep, WhatsApp,...) I've solved it after enabling "keep mobile data on when sleeping", besides adding the app to the ignore battery optimization list, of course.
RM
I have found that same exempt setting as well, unfortunately Chrome isn't in the list so I guess that's why you have to root to remove it first and readd it as third party app for it to show up.
To much effort to just get notification working, a basic feature of all phones and risk losing warranty and Android Pay access.
To make it clear for others:
1. add the app to the Protected apps list (settings - advanced settings - battery manager - protected apps).
2. go to settings - apps - advanced - exempt from battery optimization - select the drop down list and and select "all apps" - find your app and set it to allow.
Huawei programmers must have pride themselves in putting settings inside convoluted maze that's impossible to find.
You might also want to add Settings - Advanced Settings - Battery Manger - Upper right gear - keep mobile data on during sleep.
I second you about this kind of maze that we must run to just have notifications, but, on the other hand I'm kind of OK with it, as soon I can find a way to solve matter!
