Can anyone else confirm that this update breaks the MSL Hotspot mod?
Also, any changes to the bootloader in this update?

use your msl and try and go into apns . they are all greyed out sprint advanced tech cant even access them. it breaks smart lock. youll have to reset wifi and bluetooth settings every couple of reboots. sprint has had 1300 calls today about it.

I mean, I appreciate the warning, but I turned off auto OTA updates for a reason. I don't want to possibly lose the ability to unlock my bootloader. Thanks for your unintentional research and I'm sorry for your loss of ability with your device. Good luck in getting a new one.

I can confirm this. Got a new phone for a second line on my account today. Update notification popped up, accepted it and went to modify the APN settings when it was finished and they are all greyed out now. Fortunately had not updated my phone yet, but this new one is going back.

I updated my phone yesterday my APN is greyed out but hotspot mod still works. The issue I'm having is my data is slower than before.

so does it or does it not break hotspot mod??? has this update actually been pulled? i have not received the update notification on any of my s7 edges.

I don't use the hotspot mod and installed the update. Haven't noticed any issues, but what else is it breaking for you guys?

My hotspot works, I did the whole add dun in the apn when I first got my phone on the 8th. I used it today at work with no problems.

Update is fine. Yes, the update will screw stuff up if you modded your phone off stock.

After applying the update this morning, the battery drain rate has increased drastically. The phone has been rebooted a few times. Hopefully, it'll get better in the next couple days.
Sent from my SM-G935P using Tapatalk

I just got done downloading it but haven't installed it yet. I don't really care about the hot spot that much, can you be more specific on what other things it breaks? Did you run the update with having package disabler enabled? Patching the hot spot mod I'm sure was on the top of there list. I just checked for my update and it was still live. Usually my rule is to hard reset after system updates. If sprint wanted to pull it, I would have thought they would have done that by now.

I don't know how much credibility there is for anything that guy said aside from the hotspot issue. Haven't seen anyone else confirm it.

My battery seemed to drain faster after the update, but that could just be a result of the battery stats being reset as a part of the update - I will post back if things settle down after a while. I don't use smart lock, so can't confirm that.
Sent from my SM-G935P using Tapatalk

Similar to pitcherj above... battery *appears* to be draining quicker, but i've also now read 2 pages of placebo effect on that so we'll see as time moves on if that's real or imagined. never used the hotspot mod (got a work phone with that function already paid for) and also no smart lock usage.
So, other than possible battery concerns, no issues to report so far, and I can't see any apparent changes on the front end yet.

Both mine seem to have worse battery life after update

I performed a factory reset & set up the phone from scratch. Still getting ****ty battery life. What a friggin fail by Sprint & Samsung.

Have to agree. Beautiful phone but barely lasting to the day. Was so excited about the huge battery but can't even use it to listen to music at work or it will die. Bought it so i wouldn't have to worry about charging all the time.

LISTEN CLEARLY for you guys who took the update and still have a working hotspot. if or when your PRL or profile udpate it WILL ERASE YOUR APNS AND RESET THEM TO DEFAULT AAAANNNNDD LOCK THEM SO THEY ARE INACCESSIBLE.
its only a matter of time for you now at some point it will update and your hotspot will be gone. i can Confirm i did it myself .
i have a new one now i didnt connect to wifi when first turning it on so in the initial startup it wouldnt update
then i turned of the updates and all is well. if you already accepted ACP5 update your doomed sooner or later.
just DO NOT update prl or Profile or its gone for ever

i have three installed apps not from the play store (i had them before) but this didnt happen, i already confirmed that everytime the network signal goes and comes back again this happens.... i dont know how to remove it, probably has to do with the 4.4.3 update :/

Never heard of anything like this and it's most likely something else causing it (i.e. not 4.4.3, maybe a rogue app).
i've had the same apps since.... forever, is there an app to search for rogue apps ?

You could start with anti viruses and alike... or see what processes are running through adb / shell when the message shows up.
Connect the android to your computer running a live logcat and see what happens when that creepy smile shows up.
It's weird, never saw anything like that before, seems like from one moment to another will jump our of the screen and start hacking and slashing :b
Lol it's a 3rd party app. That you can be 100% sure of. If you were to boot your phone into safe mode it would stop happening.

Strange indeed. Could it be a network message of some sort? Though I haven't heard of it before, it's possible that it is a network connection acknowledgment of some sort.
here are my findings..
current network: TELCEL (mexico)
smiley appearing after loosing and regaining signal (doesnt matter if it has data enabled or not)
apparently theres a sim toolkit in every sim from TELCEL, i thought that it might be the main issue (toolkit is some services the network provider has )
current solution: changed runtime from dalvik to ART, has been almost 24 hrs without that smiley... just fyi

HELP! I think my phone is being remotely controlled by hacker

I've been having some weird things going on with my phone. I don't know if it is me just being paranoid or if someone is really controlling and spying on my phone. Two days ago I started running DroidSheepGuard bc I was having issues mapping the IP addresses on my network. Using Fing was only showing me half of the IPs, something just wasnt right. I had droidsheepguard alert me 4 times in the past 2 days so I started running a logcat and was wondering if some of the things I have been seeing is normal or not.
TaskManagerackageInfo: RunningApp[Service] - pkg:com.android.incallui
ChimeraRcvrProxy:Creating receiver proxy
ChimeraRcvrProxyroxy Containing Receiver
NodeUri:LAWMO_PREV_CODE cannot..... (it has a bunch
ProxyApplication:++++onCreate++++
ProxyMgr:init
AirMessegeManager:++++bindToService++++
These are just a few things I see (no particular order) that caught my attention. I will post some screenshots soon. How could I ensure that my phone is not being remotely controlled. What are the best measures to take to ensure I am safe? Thank you in advance, I may just be really paranoid but I'd like to be sure.

Anyone?
I saw two things that convince me you are being hacked from Ork. The cracked screen acts as a long range interstellar antenna powered by dirty fingernails.
What is Ork? And dirty fingernails? Are you being sarcastic? Do you really see anything? I've had a lot of weird stuff goin on and I don't know what it is. Even typing this message is very difficult when it shouldn't be. I don't ask for much help but I could really use some advice
@Ramer, Out of everyone on here your one of the most helpful people I've came across, please help me solve this. I have had really strange things happen. This isn't just happening on my s5, I also have a stupid iphone, and my brand new laptop that has issues. The other day I flashed a new rom (4x) and when it booted up I didnt sync my email or any account, I didnt connect to wifi, I immediately ran the catlog app which I had exported the apk so I could quickly instal it without google play. I noticed something strange and powered it down, as its in the close out boot animation I get a call on my iphone from my droid. Keep in mind I don't have a single number in my contact list, so unless it randomly just called the exact number for my iphone which I don't see as possible (out of every number in the world to call on accident, the one sitting right next to me?) something is going on. I have disabled wifi, 3g and mobile data, it STILL does strange stuff. I have removed system apps that come back, I've even battled with this thing while removing that "Ant" app, it put it right back when I uninstalled it. I've had this thing slow down my text messages and right before I click the next key to spell the word out, I can see a symbol pop up (like a transparent symbol behind the key I am trying to hit) . I get pop up messeges that tell me I am roaming when I'm at my house all the time, I try not to push anything and restart my phone but they keep coming...Awhile ago this happened and I flashed the firmware my phone came with, I think it was 4.4.2, then I manually flashed the 5.0 lp and rooted, still there. I have replaced my router twice, got any old device off my network, and got a new laptop...My iphone does similar stuff, theres way more background data that runs than foreground data, my iphone says its location is coming from Atlanta, I'm in NC.

I'm sorry, I don't have a clue. I was being a bit of a smart *** earlier, it's was hard to resist. Honestly, the only solution would be a complete wipe including internal and external SD. I don't think anyone will have a solution, which is why your posts went unanswered.
I think you are too paranoid. I think if you are that concerned, you should run unrooted stock. I can't answer all your questions, but i have had uninstalled programs install on reboot on a deodex rom. I have no idea why this happens but I'm not worried. I sometimes an roaming at home too. I figured it is because the signal isn't so good.

Marshmallow and App Data Restoration

This is a simple question, but I'm wondering if the answer is complex...
With Android 5.1 and below, Google backed up Apps, and certain system settings, etc, but NEVER app data itself.
With 6.0, I noticed some apps (depending if they're compatible with google API's) back up and restore app data as well, included with the app restoration.
You may ask, why would this guy not want google to restore app data?
Simple... In my testing for a seperate issue, I ran into a serious wake lock problem. After a full RUU, full wipe, and reinstallation of a Marshmallow ROM on my M8, I am getting constant wakelocks and battery drains after all my apps are restored with their data.
I would like to test to see if it is faulty data possibly restored with an app, but that unfortunately gets restored with Google's App backup now.
Anyone know if there's a way to system wide wipe app data? NOT just the cache? Or just tell Google only to backup Apps and not data?
Thank you!
The answer is simple although it's probably not what you want to hear. Don't let Google restore your apps. Do it the old fashioned way. Start clean and install your apps as you need them.
If you're not willing to do that, I'd suggest using Titanium Backup to restore your apps instead of Google. With TB you can choose to restore apps without the data. If it were me though, I'd just bite the bullet and install them one at a time. Seems to me that in a case like yours, that would be the best way to go.
Make a backup of what you have now with TWRP. Then start fresh. If you figure out what's going on, you could maybe restore the backup and fix what needs fixing on it.

Will try this too. Ill just completely turn off 5 GHZ in my wifi options, just to make sure it doesn't try to connect to any.
I will report back if this helps. Thanks again!
Well, just want to provide an update...
It may not be marshmallow causing this after all. I just did a full clean flash into Viper 4.6.1 (android 5.0.2)
During the day and evening phone was fine. Over night is when the wake locks started happening sporadically. In about 6 hours, dropped about 10%. I checked Wakelock Detector app, and it seems google play services is really pumping out those wakes.
I don't really use bluetooth, I only have 1 device even paired with my phone (my car which disconnects when turned off). But I do keep bluetooth Enabled
I just charged my phone to 100%, turned on Airplane mode + wifi. I'm going to monitor during the day. Is there a way to detect within wakelock detector exactly what part of android is causing this? It doesn't seem like an app itself, because the wakes are coming from android system. Or could an app be causing the google play services wake?

A day before this, I temporarily went back to a 5.0.1/5.0.2 ROM, found out it was an app or two trying to destroy my battery in the background with high GPS usage. After adjusting and fixing, Phone drained normally, maybe like 4% a whole nights of sleep.
Fast forward, I reflash Marshmallow ROM, set it up, and no more wakelocks/excessive battery drain. I charge the phone with my QC2.0 Charger (QC probably isn't enabled anyway in kernel, but didn't make a difference to me) from about 50% to 100% and unplug, and go to sleep.
This morning I woke up to phone at 86%. I check wakelock detector, and power history, nothing out of ordinary. Scratching my head at this point, I restart the phone, and BAM, phone is at 35%.
Some points below
1) I believe it was the first time I charged the phone fully, not sure if that had anything to do with it. I've never needed to calibrate battery in past...
2) Wifi was strictly on 2.4 Ghz. Cellular coverage is good. GPS is on, but not being used.
This sounds like a longshot, but I'm leaning to the kernel probably not supporting QC2.0, and it being detrimental to charging the phone. Possibly ROM thinking it's enabled, but kernel is disabled. So right now I'm charging the phone to 100% using a computer USB port (500mA max) just for testing purposes.
Have anyone ever seen this before?

wifi battery drain still not going away

So i've had the infamous Marshmallow wifi drain since the update rolled out (US retail 2gb version XT1540).
Didnt get the time to look into it as university life didnt permit me from resetting and stuff, but I have reset my phone twice in the past week and the bug is appearing again.
For the first reset, i did it from inside android's settings. and then restored a backup (without any apps apart from whatsapp and messenger). For the first day there was no battery drain so I installed a few more apps and boom, charged the phone overnight and there was massive wifi battery drain the next day.
I then reset the phone from android's setting menu again. and then reset cache from the recovery mode and then reset the entire phone from the recovery mode. Didn't backup and set up the phone as a new device. Worked fine for the first battery cycle (only installed whatsapp and onedrive, cant live without these two apps) but the drain started once i charged the phone again. For the next charge cycle I restarted the phone when battery was 100% charged and havent had the drain. When I charged the phone again, the drain appeared again.
I've also noticed (but can't confirm if this is true) that turning off the wifi or disconnecting from wifi when leaving range also starts the drain.
I was also on a trip for the past 10 days without wifi. For a three day stretch when I completely shut down the wifi, location and other things, there was not wifi drain. My phone stayed alive for three days, even though I took ~150 pictures and a couple of videos. The drain started again when I came back home and connected wifi.
I love the phone and I dont wont to move away from motorola due to this little but massively annoying bug. What are my options to fix this? Had a chat with a motorola rep and they asked to send it to the repair center. That is not a possibility due to my geographical location.
I can try a few more resets if you people recommend. My suspicion is that the MM update had some weird bug and that I should move back to lollipop and then update back upto MM. In that case, I will need you people to guide me from scratch as I have no idea how to root and stuff.
bump. Any suggestions?

i am also the Victim of that Bug, finally i got irritated and as the warranty is about to vanish in 2 more months, i Rooted and install Cm13 ( which is based on 6.0.1) and its been 2 weeks
after going to CM13, it took me a couple of days to adjust, as i was really used to stock rom and Moto Stuff ( display, actions)
the Cm13 covered MotoActions, but no Motodisplay.. but the main thing i noticed is ..
1) I no longer see GhostTOuches ( but some times while typing messages, it acts a little weird by giving spaces)
2) the Wifi Drain issue totally fixed
i will provide my screenshots, have a look at them

as you said, you have less idea on rooting and stuff, there are two things you can do ..
1) wait for patch from Motorola, ( they will soon comeup with a patch, because there are so many people facing this problem, and they are eating motorola in the Official MotoDiscussionForum )
2) Revert back to Lollipop

Network Connection Failed Error - Note 8

Hey everyone, i have been having this annoying error/pop-up/notification that has been bothering me since i got the Note 8. Everytime i turn on the screen to unlock it, i get the "Network connection failed" message.
Now, this happens, when i have cell signal at full bars, LTE or Wi-Fi and at all different locations. I tried resetting the phone, adding the apps without any sort of backup, deleting apps, switching my carriers APN, I tried replacing the phone but it always comes back.
I tried contacting Samsung but they are clueless as to what i am taking about.
Does anyone have any suggestions into how i could proceed to fix this, or is anyone aware of what the problem is?
Who is your carrier?

Same issue
I have this same issue - annoying but no negative affects...
Verizon is my carrier - I am not so sure this is a carrier issue. In fact, not sure how someone with so little information can definitively say it is a carrier issue...More will report this issue too!
I have the same issue. Verizon
I believe this has something to do with the aggressiveness of power management sleeping apps...see if you still get the error after switching mobile data always on in developers options...I had to switch some of apps off in power saving mode as well because of the aggressiveness...it could be something else though...just an idea
Same problem here I have a Qualcomm carrier free note 8 using it on T-Mobile. It's driving me crazy

This feels like an application issue. I am obviously not certain. Going to do some digging.
If I find a solution, I will report it here.
I think it has to do with download booster.
Same Issue 11-9-17
Has anyone found a solution for this? I'm also having this issue as of 11-9-17. Have tried enabling/disabling download booster, enabling/disabling mobile data always on and have tried a few network resets with Verizon Tech Coach.
I got all the way up to Tier 2 and every person I spoke to agrees this is a weird issue they haven't seen before. Mine seems to come and go. Sometimes I can get hit with the pop-up every time I unlock, other times it'll behave fine for hours then start up again for a little bit then stop. Thankfully there is no impact to operation, but still annoying.
Anyone figure this out...it is driving me crazy.
this is a combination of power saving and the "show nearby locations" in the phone app being active.
can turn off either and issue should disappear.
I have this happening on my s8. Haven't figured out which app/service is causing it but I killed a bunch and the error went away. It's likely one of the hundred background Samsung services. I'll try to narrow it down.
same for me

I also have Verizon. It used to happen on my Nexus 6P and now Pixel 2. If I ever figure out which app, I'll let you know.
Mine randomly stopped about 2 weeks ago. I know there have been a couple updates since my post so I'm not 100% sure if those fixed or if it was something else. Still a mystery as far as I'm concerned.

This seemed to work but just now saw the error again when I unlocked my phone. I turned "show nearby locations" in the phone app back on, will look into power save options next.
I've had this problem for probably close to a year and I'm really getting tired of it, even though it's just a nuisance.
I went into settings<connections<more connection settings<turned off nearby device scanning and then reset network connections which got rid of the notification on the bottom of the screen. I'm sure it'll keep popping up but for now that's what worked for me
Is there a solution for this yet? Is there any way to disable the message? Every time I change from WiFi to Mobile or vice-versa, I have to deal with this for the next 10 min or so. I have tried all the fixes mentioned here.
Solution
Install the app Toast Service from the Playstore. This will run in the background and show you which app is causing the problem. Mine was Hikvision. As soon as the error arrives you will see under notifications when you pull down from the top which app is causing the message. Hope this helps all.
