It's probably some app you have installed causing it

Did you install 3rd party apps (not from the Play Store)?
i have three installed apps not from the play store (i had them before) but this didnt happen, i already confirmed that everytime the network signal goes and comes back again this happens.... i dont know how to remove it, probably has to do with the 4.4.3 update :/

Never heard of anything like this and it's most likely something else causing it (i.e. not 4.4.3, maybe a rogue app).
i've had the same apps since.... forever, is there an app to search for rogue apps ?

You could start with anti viruses and alike... or see what processes are running through adb / shell when the message shows up.
Connect the android to your computer running a live logcat and see what happens when that creepy smile shows up.
It's weird, never saw anything like that before, seems like from one moment to another will jump our of the screen and start hacking and slashing :b
Lol it's a 3rd party app. That you can be 100% sure of. If you were to boot your phone into safe mode it would stop happening.

Strange indeed. Could it be a network message of some sort? Though I haven't heard of it before, it's possible that it is a network connection acknowledgment of some sort.
here are my findings..
current network: TELCEL (mexico)
smiley appearing after loosing and regaining signal (doesnt matter if it has data enabled or not)
apparently theres a sim toolkit in every sim from TELCEL, i thought that it might be the main issue (toolkit is some services the network provider has )
current solution: changed runtime from dalvik to ART, has been almost 24 hrs without that smiley... just fyi

Ok maps it locks on, GPS status app shows sats but no fix on any of them even outside. Tried flashing the sgs3 GPS fix, the Google universal fix, and still nothing. I mean it says lock in status when I open maps, and has me in the general area, but no luck with nav. I've tried restoring backups, no dice, even with fixes. Never installed an aosp Rom. So Idk what happened this weekend worked on my way to the hotel for this trip, and I go today to set it for home and it wouldn't lock on and has nav stuck in that parking lot. Even after restores, or a full wipe and new Rom install, uninstall maps, everytime I reopen nav it's still I'm that lot and I'm not even in the same town.

Please call Verizon and report your issue. I just got off the phone with Tier 2 support today and they claimed to have zero reports of this problem. I told them that I had seen "many, many reports" of this problem on XDA.
But see what I don't get us I've never had this problem until this weekend. Same Rom non-stop so Idk

Unless you are on Verizon's paid navigation app that would be a Google problem and not a Verizon problem. Server may have been down. My Google navigation works.

no fix, but says fix is on or w/e it says by the time. then here's maps loading directions fine ... but here on the nav it still has me in that hotel parking lot lol. I've even let it sit for an hour without screen off no luck. It had to be some service/file somewhere not getting wiped or something Idk. Anyways I just got back from a few hour drive so I'll be checking on this in a few hours after a nap lol. Thanks for any help anyone can dig up.

Same issue here I was testing out some new ROMs and thought it may have been a bad flash. I went back and restored 4 backups full wipes and cant get any of them to lock on including stock prior to OTA update recently.
Well it looks like it was magically fixed by Verizon. Atleast for me it did.
Fix that worked for me
I had this issue. I believe I caused it by mucking around trying to make my GPS fix faster. Symptom was simple - GPS knew where I was - just did not register any accuracy (in GPS Status) and thus would not lock. Always searching for GPS in Navigation even though it put my location as pretty much where I was. I had ClearnROM at the time but I don't think that caused it at all.
I tried Faster Fix. GPS Aides (free and paid) and a custom GPS.config file. Nothing worked. Thought for sure I was going to have to exchange the phone. so I set about doing what I would have to do.
Returned phone to bone stock via ODIN (VRALF2).
Rebooted into stock recovery and wiped/data for a clean internal SD card.
Flashed radio via ODIN (VRLF2).
Accepted VZW OTA update (30MB).
Rooted with Root Debug FS.
Put EZ-Unlock and EZ-Recovery apks on my sdcard and installed them.
Unlocked the Bootloader and booted to recovery 6.0.1 once just to verify it worked.
Whalla.
GPS locks and all it back to normal.
Your mileage may vary. I did (in the process of wipe/data for clean SD card- loose all my Titanium Backups but getting Navigation to work again was worth the hassle of rebuilding my apps from scratch.
I have no intention to put any effort into tweaking the GPS settings or file again now that it's working.
At the title suggests I'm looking for a whatsapp replacement.
Ideally I would use BBM, but I cannot rely on it for notifications. The app icon disappears from the status bar after few minutes and then no notifications will be received until opening the app again.
Any good suggestions on alternatives that are tried and tested on our nexus 5?

Open BBM -> More -> Settings -> make sure "BBM Connected Icon" is turned on.
I've had the same, in the previous version, before this button was even introduced. Ever since BBM was updated, the icon has always been there and has never disappeared, at all.

no go for me.. tried on my nexus 5 and daughters nexus 4 on KitKat.... after a period in deep sleep the bbm app goes into a 0bytes state in settings/apps/running.. then despite the status bar icon saying connected, bbm will not get notifications until it is opened again. Other msg apps cope fine in the 0byte state, shrugs.. I have missed loads of messages over the last week's.
I've tried many things to try and stop that behaviour..
turning it into system app
setting all permissions
changing owner and group to root
odexing it
nothing works

Ah, I see. My bad then.
As of to the replacement - Kik Messenger works well. Works similarly to BBM, by having your own name used to add people (i.e. MrCatalyst) and vice versa. Much more secure than WhatsApp, which uses phone number and lacks privacy, and very similar to BBM at that.
My proposal is Swiss app Threema. Their servers are in Switzerland also. Works OK. If you can get your friends to use paid app.

Maybe i'm blind but can't find any type of HTC task manager on this device? Had it on stock ATT HTC One X+ device. I'm new to Verizon, switched specifically for this device and better deal with service so this is all new to me here.
Just seems odd zero task manager installed at all. Never had to use a third party, any recommendations? Thanks
I see in Settings, App manager, you can scroll right to Running apps and manually tap and stop. Anyway to have these apps NOT become active after a reboot? I'm spoiled and use to root and greenify and what not. Never use apps like Verizon Cloud, Verizon messages, NFL, etc.
Facebook app uses 48mb just for push services? Already have half the ram used up and only using mandatory apps running except Facebook, Messenger, GSam Battery Monitor, AppLock, Dropbox (all except Facebook and Messenger only use maybe 5-10mb each).
Closest I can find is by pressing the recent apps button and clicking the four square icon in the top right. That's typically the most we'll get w/o root apps

True. I mainly like to hold off as long as I can until I have to root. As much as I like tinkering with Android stuff I always have that time period where I'm not willing to mess with my new$600 phone. After that period I just go flash happy.

Damn well disabling all Verizon bloatware and Amazon crap did something. I have gallery lock lite to hide personal pics/vids from the stock gallery app. I have the pics and vids saved on external sd card from previous device so these are not saved on internal.
Well now they are all visible again in stock gallery app like I never hid them. They also show inside the gallery lock app.
I had vaulty app before which worked great but on this device does not hide stuff. Not sure if it's a kit Kat 4.4.2 thing or what? Seems odd after reboot they are all visible again in gallery app though. Damnit. More reason to root! Can't even have private photos on my sd card, WTH?

I do. My voice features disappeared as well

Same thing happened with the Moto X.
There is a config flag that lists the 'blacklist' phone models. There used to be an app to force the Google app into debug/dogfood mode so that you could change it - but I haven't seen any way to do that w/ the newest versions. My guess is that Samsung chose to disable listen everywhere to try to force people into using s-voice.

Check your usage for the past 3 days. Mine has only used 2.97 me in the last 3 days. But in the last 2 weeks, when I first got it and rooted it, it used 4 GB. It may be just from set up that it uses so much data.

I bet it is a rogue app or many that hasn't been fixed or updated for 7.1. Try removing all old apps and adding back one by one. This is a common issue with new versions of Android

I got the phone with the November update already on it and I have not seen this issue. Has anyone figured out what this service actually does?
I had Android OS used 1.5 GB of my data using Project Fi, they refunded the data but I don't know if the November patch fixed it. I feel like the OTA update was the issue to begin with, since it kept failing to update until I did it manually.

Greenify doesn't fix it, only way so far is applying the update. You can root on the latest update so no reason not to do it.
Assuming your rooted, what's happening is the seamless update feature is repeatedly downloading and attempting to install in background and failing since there is root. Turn off automatic updates in developer options and/or sideload newest ota
