[KERNEL] [E6853/E6833/E6883] Zach's Kernel Playground for Z5P, WIP (work in progress) - Xperia Z5 Premium Android Development

Final notice: Since my Z5 died (it's broken into pieces, glass shattered) - development is effectively halted - NO more updates - sorry
This is a Stock (Sony) ROM Kernel and WILL NOT work on AOSP, CM, etc.
aka SunKernel for Z5 Premium + Z5 Premium Dual - Stock ROM (for now only stock)
This is an extension of the Xperia Z5/Z5 Dual "sumire" main thread over at: https://forum.xda-developers.com/xp...und-z5-wip-t3340725/post65936553#post65936553
Okay,
so the kernel is now also available for the Z5 Premium series
Please understand that I can't test whether it works due to lack of that very device - Enjoy !
Keep in mind that building for the Z5 "Stock" ROMs and "Stock" Kernels, you're constantly facing the following tradeoff:
compatibility with pre-built "core" kernel modules (e.g. texfat [proprietary exfat microSD fs driver])
compatibility with pre-built "goodies" kernel modules (e.g. video and other acceleration, hwcodecs, ...)
losing features that can NOT be replaced by similar ones (e.g. ecryptfs, wlan, exfat, etc.)
when going too far the device doesn't boot or simply hangs on bootanimation
this resulted in a couple branches (at least several dozen) that are partially or totally broken :silly:

More info on the Latest Kernel can be usually found at:
AT the end of the thread
( I KNOW - I should have reserved a few posts for better overview )

Before starting to test/use keep in mind that this is WIP (work in progress),
that means - NO guarantees,
backups before flashing are a MUST (especially your microSD card content !)
stability, speed, improved battery and satisfaction are a great side-effect to have.
You have been WARNED !

Amazing to see this and very happy too!
Let me know if you want testings to be done, will be glad to help to the best of my knowledge. Ive used two Sony phones before this, and think I can help you out with testings
Edit: And does this support the dual versions too? I'm outside and I can't test at the moment. So, just asked.

Undervolting is not added?

Nope - lol, I was actually waiting for demand for the dsds models,
I've already downloaded the kernel but haven't extracted the initramfs for it yet
You have the dual version ?
*edit:*
from one of your posts - it looks like you have one
okay then - I will build one later,
let's see if the build works equally reliable for the dsds models

Of course, the kernel base is by @AndroPlus <3
undervolting currently isn't working correctly right now though - values go too low (e.g. -250 mV) - so some parts might be missing,
I haven't looked into it yet - focus currently is to get the kernel working in a general sense, then later trying out the "goodies" (UV and others)
hope I can take a quick look later what might be missing

Ok, thanks. I'll give it a try

Enabling a CPU hotplug makes the cpu warmer faster than normally. It even gets warm when I listen to music with the screen off, which never happened before.
I'm using blue_active governor for both big and LITTLE.

Can I know how to control the tomtom sound control? Searched for it in sys/class/misc as I thought it'd be there, but I was wrong. Help us out?
Edit: And thanks a ton for the dual version. Kernel is working OK as of now except of the sound control,, need more time to comment on the battery life though.

As of today. Ive got a battery drain of 2% in three hours. Couldn't test for longer since I got only three hours of sleep and had to take the phone off idle.
I think the battery performance is good since I'm using two sims, and one was on LTE mode.

Sure,
https://github.com/zachariasmaladro...ts/Sun-Kernel_32.1.A.0.xxx_AP-mod-v21_I.2_1_5
feel free to take a look at the source & adopt it to our device (or pick someone's brain to do it),
right now the settings affect nothing.
Since I'm mostly busy all the time right now I currently can't get my mind calm enough to fully get an understanding of this,
besides this - the kernel is finished and running much cooler (assumedly also better in terms of battery runtime)

I think faux sound control was working okay with our device in auras76 kernel
Well, analog control was broken, wasn't working.
I'm not able to Control sound using Tom Tom control. Any way to do that?

Very nice kernel, stable. Does it Include DRM support?

Yeah, looks like that,
Faux Sound Control works, Kernel Adiutor - not so much, been wondering all the time why there was no difference at all
Tom Tom control afaik isn't included in that kernel source ?
Patience please, I'm currently testing a totally revamped kernel (different hotplug - cpuquiet - well, there are quite a few to choose from, lol ),
the usage consumption looks way better compared to the one with all those hotplug mechanisms.
That's quite a difference now but if Sony's apps (Photoanalyzer, devicemonitor, camera common, ... - I look at you ) and others wake up every few minutes,
there's only so much the kernel can do ...
Don't forget to use Greenify's Aggressive Doze +/- Naptime !

You can tweak existing kernel parameters via sysctl which I have done.
So far I have find my rom more stable and smooth.
I will be requiring your feedback too in this regard.

Well there are few more things that I have done.
Firstly I have changed the IO scheduler to NOOP.
Secondly I have set different task manager settings when the screen is on and off. i.e when the screen is off the settings are aggressive, while the screen is on they are average. This gives your device a smoother feeling (The script is based on FlooHimself screen state scaling tweak).
Thirdly I have played with priorities of some processes (This script was used by NeoPhyTe in the Desire forum). It does gives your device some edge.
Anyways as soon as the uploading is complete, you can play with the ROM and report back.

Task managers are useless anyway, the low memory killer default settings are spot on, further adjustments may cause instabilities.

Why you keep your rom Stock?

Some influential users such as @androidnerd2 @2010matej and some others prefer to keep or always restore to stock. So my question is to YOU!
Why you keep stock while you have some rooms that considerably improves the performance.
Simple
Better battery life and performance ratio.
Modded stock is far better than a custom Rom
Sent from my C1604 using xda app-developers app
Stability. Yeah, I dont get jb, at least I can play hd games properly, and I get to keep the warranty (waiting for year 2015 warranty expire). And if miro / any other 3g video call phones, I get to keep this stock function.

But when we get stable release of CM every gamer should consider switching to CM because of the performance boost.

Yep I agree, because of that I said that when we have stable CM release then u may notice the performance increase.
I had live with walkman for 2 years before my XE , I used CM 10 & 10.1 most of the times.
Anyway I think that Sony JB firmware is very successful compared to ICS.
Its only my experience with Sony so other useres may have different opinions.

3. Most important is " Sony UI ". I have a sony phone just because of that. I must have bought a Nexus or something if I want to use cm.
Unless and until someone develops a fully working with minimum bugs cm rom I'll be using stock.
Well I don't know how to build a rom otherwise I should have build one a long time ago.

Yeah, like other say there is much stability, not so laggy. But this isnt for all phones. For example. I have xperia x8 and without custom rom, hpone sucks but for xperia j there is differrent!
And the biggest reason is, stock camera has better quality, take picture faster, panorama working great, video is working great. I really like stock Sony UI + themes + statusbar...
Its a lot of things why to use and stay on stock rom!

1 reason for me. The video capture on CM10 don't work on Xperia E. Now i'm back on stock rom, rooted it, and remove all the bloatware. CM10 works a bit faster, but i'm happy to have the video capture back...
Not just video cam
I love Sony's ui. It's the best

Then you will get much faster and smoother os

Some ROM too big and eat too more RAM.
Flash the ROM by CWM must carefully.(you will hard brick your phone,if you start to flash ROM without clear data )
Different ROM also have different battery usage.
So,the conclusion is use the stock Rom very safe.(stock Rom stability and a few of bugs)

Supercharge aka BLACKDOG, Its a tweak. It sets such as a LMK (Low memory Killer) of OOM (out of memory).. If you use that script + kernelized(Blackdog stuff) using Script manager it can boost your device performance..
There is a lot of tweak in XDA. But Blackdog is one of hell, the OP @zeppelinrox is legendary one..

Franco Kernel vs Stock?

I am debating on whether to buy the pro version and flash Franco's Kernel for my Nexus 5 and 7 (2013). I just want to know what I bits of extra I can really do with it.. And if its worth it. I'm more worried about stability than anything I guess. I don't want to run into little issues whether it be audio, video, whatever it may be. Also I have never flashed a kernel or another ROM, I've always stuck with stock. I am running 4.4.2 right now utilizing Gravity Box and Wanam Kit, and a few other modules. Any input would be greatly appreciated. If this thread has been done before, my apologies. I am a brand new forum user, never really get on the computer.

Well to be honest the stock kernel allready is very good, the only downsides of it are batterylife/screenontime and colors are not very vibrant. These 2 aspects are substantialy better with Franco kernel. Screenontime and batterylife is improved by at least 50% or more for some (check out the Franco thread). Also you can raise the speaker/mic/in-call volume as you wish and load a color profile for better and more vibrant colors.
if you want stability stick with stock

I have been getting fantastic battery life with my setup now, I just leave brightness at auto, and from my bit of research, that seems to be the big culprit of battery life. I'm always looking to improve my phone in terms of performance and cosmetic, keeps me busy at negative 60 out here in North Dakota lol.
But 50% overall more battery life?! That's pretty friggin good. Would definitely pay for it for that kind of power.
I'm also assuming based on your post that the color control is not for LED control but the screen itself. Any idea if the Xposed LED module works well? I know its off topic just a quick question.
Not sure about the volumes, I usually don't mess with call volumes, but I'll look into it more.
Thanks for your post! Also please post the link to the Franco Thread.

If you are having trouble making a decision... just flash the kernel with fastboot and give it a test run. Can the free version of FKU auto flash? I'm not sure, you would have to investigate.
If you decide you like it (and the updates that go along with it), then maybe consider buying the app.
But yes, screen on time is better with FK due to the way the clock speeds scale. A lot better. Even with the stock settings, though I find even those to be a bit aggressive.

Most users report a screenontime of about 5-7 hours while stock is about 3,5 hours. Don`t know about the Xposed module but color controll in the Franco kernel updater app is realy good and there are various preloaded settings available. Link thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2508284. Backup your current kernel in the FKU before you flash a Franco kernel, so you can restore it if need be.

I believe you can, I'll look into when I get home.
So do you underclock or undervolt? I don't know the differences between the two, my apologies. If I do get Franco I think I will just leave it at the stock settings it comes with before I make any changes, still got learning to do. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

I wouldn`t mess with the kernel settings like UV/OC besides color and sound optimisations. The stock settings are allready good enough for most users, only xperienced users should do that imo.

No, flashing kernels or recovery`s don`t wipe data.

That's what I'll do then, what kind of sound optimizations are there? Just the mic volume and whatnot? Or are there some for playing music, I have poweramp and use that equalizer, so just wondering.

You can only raise the volume levels (no EQ settings), this should not interfere with PowerAmp.

[KERNEL] FauxCode [No longer in Development][Sources in OP]

Kernel is no longer in public development
Clarification as to the why Im stopping
Echoa said:
I am not committed enough to this to do so. Havent even touched it since the last update and dont feel the need to, I really would much rather leave it as I do not wish to get very involved in kernel stuff, etc.
I feel like posting source means I have intent to support, maintain, etc. this stuff and I dont. Its not just a matter of the posting source, its that I only posted the kernel because it was Fauxs and Codecrafts sources I used (only using the GPU OC from Codecraft) and since they shared their work so graciously I felt I should share my modified version of it. I dont want credit for work I didnt do because someone used my sources (which arent even really mine). Ive used github before and know how, its easy, but like I said I feel that would send a message I dont intend.
If there is someone who wants to actually maintain it i will gladly give you the source if you PM me.
TL;DR Im not leaving the kernel scene just because of source posting, its because this was just a fun little thing I did and dont plan on doing that long.

Ill cya guys around, just not posting a kernel lol
Ive been weeding out things that take too much of my time away from my intended career of comics/animation, this is one of them, and considering I didnt have much intent for it in this first place i may as well leave it now.
Sorry for the lack of info on my part guys as to exactly "why" Ive decided this. Hopefully these past posts give more clarity. Im glad the kernel was well recieved and works well for you guys, but I didnt intended to do this that long in the first place. Ill zip the source and add it to the OP for someone to grab and play with.

Is there a reason some Kernel's use 2.5GHz for OC instead of 2.8GHz? Or is it just personal preference?

Preference
You hit a thermal wall real fast at 2.8 and end up throttled anyway
From what I can tell this is a performance based kernel, yes?

[Kernel][DEV aboot ONLY] Nougat kernels [kltevzw]

Hi everybody!
I'm new to the Verizon S5, but I followed the great bootloader unlocking thread and decided to make some custom roms and kernels. So, this is my kernel thread.
I've been building for the S4 and the Note Edge, so I hope you don't mind if I step in here. I'm not trying to step on anyone else's toes, and I hope you all don't mind another developer hanging around.
You can find all my work at https://github.com/alaskalinuxuser when I get a chance to get it uploaded. I live in Alaska and do have limited and slow internet, so please be patient.
See post #2 for Nougat kernels.
Nougat kernels:
Right now I only have one built:
AOKP 7.1.2 - Tested on a Verizon S5, this kernel can be flashed on any KLTE phone.

-I/O schedulers
-Change boost settings
- and more!
great work .
Ive been asking around about this , there was a thread that ported a backtrack/kali for the s5 and that kernel had the feature of controling the tx and rx of the phone, i dont know if you could include those commits in yours as well for LOS and also if that could be applied to the tx and rx of the modem to boost reception of signal for 4G....that's if its possible.
Looking foward to the next updates.

Quick update, new kernel, praise God, it even works!
Overclocked to 2533 MHz without increasing voltage.
I had to reset my cellular settings after flashing this, however, I am using my Verizon phone on an AT&T network through Straight Talk, so I'm not sure if that matters. But after a reset of the cell settings, data started working just fine for me.
My kernels tend to be more battery oriented than performance, but I like to overclock a little without increasing the voltage to get the most bang for the buck. Enjoy!

now since it overclocks maybe now you can attempt to undervolt it and the gpu to the bare minimum that it will allow without it freezing and rebooting ( even better battery life) , on the other kernels ive tried i was able to get it to stay at a -125mv but had to bring the cpu frequency down to 1400'S or 1200's some users said that -100 at stock frequency was stable so mayby for your kernel a -90mv with the overclock is def possible. sadly we still can undervolt or overclock the gpu as well
Actually, my plan is to add voltage control to the kernel, so you can adjust it to any level you want. I just finished adding that option to the Galaxy S4, including the GPU, and hope to do the same here.

WOW!!! testing now , pretty much for me i play one game pretty much all day , so def will test now and report back if any issues occured during the time period.
also my question is , do you see any possibilities of gpu voltage control?
also do include the kcal v2 for the screen (rgb) calibration. to properly dim the blacks and pop up colors.
if you keep this up , seriously hands down your kernel will turn-out to be the best kernel for the S5 , especially since you are putting in new feaures that the other kernels don't have. I mean a gpu overclock , i dont think no other dev have accomplished that.

Well, actually @ktoonsez has a kernel that over clocked the GPU much higher than me. However, my focus is on over clocking without increasing voltage.
As for voltage control for the GPU, I hope so.
I will look into kcal v2? I was thinking of adding @faux123 fauxsound next.
Most of the work I do is piggy backed off of great work from people like ktoonsez, Faux123, and @javelinanddart, so I can't take much credit. Thanks for the kind words though!
