Hi everybody!
I'm new to the Verizon S5, but I followed the great bootloader unlocking thread and decided to make some custom roms and kernels. So, this is my kernel thread.
I've been building for the S4 and the Note Edge, so I hope you don't mind if I step in here. I'm not trying to step on anyone else's toes, and I hope you all don't mind another developer hanging around.
You can find all my work at https://github.com/alaskalinuxuser when I get a chance to get it uploaded. I live in Alaska and do have limited and slow internet, so please be patient.

Ive been asking around about this , there was a thread that ported a backtrack/kali for the s5 and that kernel had the feature of controling the tx and rx of the phone, i dont know if you could include those commits in yours as well for LOS and also if that could be applied to the tx and rx of the modem to boost reception of signal for 4G....that's if its possible.
Looking foward to the next updates.

Quick update, new kernel, praise God, it even works!
Overclocked to 2533 MHz without increasing voltage.
I had to reset my cellular settings after flashing this, however, I am using my Verizon phone on an AT&T network through Straight Talk, so I'm not sure if that matters. But after a reset of the cell settings, data started working just fine for me.
My kernels tend to be more battery oriented than performance, but I like to overclock a little without increasing the voltage to get the most bang for the buck. Enjoy!

now since it overclocks maybe now you can attempt to undervolt it and the gpu to the bare minimum that it will allow without it freezing and rebooting ( even better battery life) , on the other kernels ive tried i was able to get it to stay at a -125mv but had to bring the cpu frequency down to 1400'S or 1200's some users said that -100 at stock frequency was stable so mayby for your kernel a -90mv with the overclock is def possible. sadly we still can undervolt or overclock the gpu as well
Actually, my plan is to add voltage control to the kernel, so you can adjust it to any level you want. I just finished adding that option to the Galaxy S4, including the GPU, and hope to do the same here.

Added @ktoonsez voltage control! Credit goes to him for the code. I just added it to the kernel.
You can control this in Kernel Adiutor, but remember, adjusting voltages can be dangerous and may alter the space time continuum of your phone.

Over clocked the GPU to 600 MHz ( a 4% gain ) without increasing voltage! Its been working great all day, but I don't play heavy graphics games, so a gamer should give it a go and let us know the results!

WOW!!! testing now , pretty much for me i play one game pretty much all day , so def will test now and report back if any issues occured during the time period.
also my question is , do you see any possibilities of gpu voltage control?
also do include the kcal v2 for the screen (rgb) calibration. to properly dim the blacks and pop up colors.
if you keep this up , seriously hands down your kernel will turn-out to be the best kernel for the S5 , especially since you are putting in new feaures that the other kernels don't have. I mean a gpu overclock , i dont think no other dev have accomplished that.

Well, actually @ktoonsez has a kernel that over clocked the GPU much higher than me. However, my focus is on over clocking without increasing voltage.
As for voltage control for the GPU, I hope so.
I will look into kcal v2? I was thinking of adding @faux123 fauxsound next.

actually yea Faux sound would be great as well.... ps. had a random reboot occured , the phone was just siting there charging , but noticed now that its stuck in a bootloop....not sure if its the kernel since its the first time that occued and the only change made was the kernel today.

So far it has not happened again but i will keep a close watch on it. but i highly think that its a rom related issue.

Great question. I'm still having trouble with faux sound. I decided to table that for now and work on a few other improvements for the S5 instead.

This kernel has a MixUp kernel base. DI18, blah blah. I deviated once Interactive got working. I also removed the Voodoo color modification. So, there's that.
It is built and designed for Syndicate ROM, which will be out later tonight. Sickest ROM you've ever seen. The version released with the ROM is slightly different, but only for fun's sake

-Removed the 1.6GHz step. The time machine is gone. Plus, was causing more problems than it was helping.
-Added 1.3GHz step courtesy Herver
-Switched from MPLL to APLL. Smoothness and speed increase. Thanks to nullghost for help on this.
-Added Voodoo color mod, tweaked version, courtesy Herver. I will be maintaining a no-voodoo version. I just haven't yet.
-Tweaked the light sensor, adding a new step and made it not jump to the brightest setting as much. Should save battery and transition smoother. Also pols a little more often.
-Tweaked scaling rules for 1.3GHz. Should scale there less, thus saving battery.
ADDITION: The file ending in 'nv.zip' is a no-voodoo version. The file ending in 'ov.zip' is the version for the original voodoo mod, not the tweaked one.

-Fixed scaling. Linpack scores and tests work fine now.
-Disabled Carrier IQ in init.rc. Carrier IQ is essentially Sprint spyware. Kernel devs: This is really easy to do. Just comment out the iqmsd lines at the end.

KNOWN BUGS:

-Some weird vibration thing going on when 1.6GHz is hit.
NOTES:
Linpack is being strange with this. I'm getting between 9.2 and 9.8 with some REALLY strange numbers. I'll have this fixed this weekend.
SetCPU sets the default governor to performance. If you use it, be sure to change it immediately for battery life.
FOR 1.2
-I recommend 200MHz-1200MHz. Some phones can't reach 1.3GHz safely.
-200MHz - 800/1000MHz is a great setting for battery and you should still have a very smooth experience.

Hmm.. something's not right here. I just got 22 fps in Neocore with the removed kernel. What could I be doing wrong?
Edit: Switching from performance to conservative upped my results to 62 fps which is quite respectable.

what kind of voltage are you giving it to get 1.6 stable? based on what im reading, anything above 1.3/1.4 is pretty much unachievable on these devices and is not really the speed that the device is running thus the unscaled rise in benchmark scores. iv been following hero_over and he couldnt get a stable 1.4 OC although he did get 1.3ghz on stock volts stable..which keeps me wondering if we really can hit 1.6 stable

All of it is on my git. I release my source, as devs should with GPL. The problem is that the fsb isn't scaled properly, affecting the floating point processor, causing low Linpack scores. I'll have it worked out this weekend,

Disclaimer
I nor any member of INC is responsible for anything that happens to your phone when using this kernel. It has been tested on mine and a few others phones to be working, but I cannot guarantee that it will work on yours. All CPU's are different, and each one takes to overclocking in different ways. That being said, don't be surprised if your phone locks up at 1.4ghz or 1.45ghz. Just set the clock down to a lower speed and it won't do it anymore; all this means is that your phone can't handle it.
Also, 1.45ghz is set at 1.400v and 1.4ghz is set at 1.375v which is definitely above the recommended voltage for the phone. This doesn't mean it will burn up your processor as they are very robust when it comes to heat dissipation, but just keep in mind that you are pushing the processor past its designed limit.
This is my first kernel release, although I have been compiling my own custom kernels since DI18. Took me a while to get the overclocking stable, a big thanks goes to tanimn and Rodderik for helping with getting 1.3ghz stable. Also, without tanimn none of this would really be possible. He has guided me through this process a lot, and I am especially thankful to him. You the man tanimn ;-)

Great job Thomas. I'm one of those who can't push the processor past 1.2g. Despite that I have had the privilege of testing pretty much all of the Twilight kernels courtasey of Tanimn as well as the Vision kernel. Both are great kernels, and run smooth on my Epic as long as I don't push it to the highest clock. Never had a reboot or lock up pushing my phone with these kernels. Once gain thanks Thomas, I know how much time and energy you go into this kernel and it shows!

Clocked a 1724 with Genocide 0.5a at 1.2 ghz. Not too much difference there. Any thoughts? Still testing battery life with this one as that's a hugs issue for me.

Also you will get higher scores when you get off that old ass rom with old files and source. So like 4 months ago. Smartbench is good

How are you suppose to test stability of oc for your phone in setcpu? I ran the stress test at 1.3ghz with no errors was there other tests to confirm stability?

Try running something CPU intensive, such as Neocore or an3dbench.

Why it's labeled unstable: So I don't get people poking me in the eyes with spoons if/when it freezes up. It actually works quite well, but since I heavily undervolted an undervolted kernel, it is bound to not be 100% stable(It is about 90% stable =P)

Instructions for using swap
For a swapfile do something like this.
dd if=/dev/zero of=$Swapfile bs=1048576 count=$Size
Where $Swapfile is the location of the file you want, and $Size is the amount of mb for swap you want to use.
Then type
mkswap $Path
swapon $Path
Replacing $Path/$Size with your own values of course, so if I wanted 20mb of swap I'd execute the commands
dd if=/dev/zero of=/sdcard/swapfile bs=1048576 count=20
mkswap /sdcard/swapfile
swapon /sdcard/swapfile
Governor exlainations
Toasty makes one transition to the max speed and stays there(benchmarks only usually)
Batterysave! sits at the bottom and when the cpu load increases past the threshhold it scales up to the next speed and takes another load sample and keeps doing that(best on battery life/performance ratio)
Ondemand sits at the bottom and when the cpu load increases past the threshhold, it scales ot the max speed then takes another load sample and scales down accordingly
Powersave makes one transition to the bottom speed and stays there
Smartass(Quoted from another author http://www.ziggy471.com/2010/11/07/smartass-governor-info ) - "is based on the concept of the interactive governor.
I have always agreed that in theory the way interactive works – by taking over the idle loop – is very attractive. I have never managed to tweak it so it would behave decently in real life. Smartass is a complete rewrite of the code plus more. I think its a success. Performance is on par with the “old” minmax and I think smartass is a bit more responsive. Battery life is hard to quantify precisely but it does spend much more time at the lower frequencies.
Smartass will also cap the max frequency when sleeping to 352Mhz (or if your min frequency is higher than 352 – why?! – it will cap it to your min frequency). Lets take for example the 528/176 kernel, it will sleep at 352/176. No need for sleep profiles any more!"
Scary - A new governor I wrote based on conservative with some smartass features, it scales accordingly to conservatives laws. So it will start from the bottom, take a load sample, if it's above the upthreshold, ramp up only one speed at a time, and ramp down one at a time. It will automatically cap the off screen speeds to 245Mhz, and if your min freq is higher than 245mhz, it will reset the min to 120mhz while screen is off and restore it upon screen awakening, and still scale accordingly to conservatives laws. So it spends most of its time at lower frequencies. The goal of this is to get the best battery life with decent performance. It will give the same performance as conservative right now, it will get tweaked over time.
Governor strategies
Conservative - Upthreshold 85, downthreshold 60
Smartass - Sleep max 245760Hz, Ramp up at 384000Hz at a time, up threshold 90, downthreshold 60
Scary - Upthreshold 80, down threshold 45, sleep max 245760Hz, sleep min, 122880Hz

Zdbox - Great toolbox app, just don't let it run in your notifications bar, it's a cpu eater
Setcpu/Nofrills - Apps that help manage your cpu/profiles/ect.(I don't use them but they're pretty okay)
Perfect system or Elixer widgets - Widgets that monitor battery, current, cpu%, cpu speed, and more(Great for battery guru's)
Adw ex - Smoothest/fasted/lightest ratio in a launcher I've seen so far, and least cpu intensive(for me that's a big thing so the cpu scales less)
Colorize widgets - Great widgets to replace the lpp ones for those converting to other launchers.
AppMonster(pro or free) - Great backup utility, automatically backs up all apps.(I like it better than TB)
GPS Status - Great application for finding satalites near you and helping get a quick lock.
Any go dev team app - Great dev team, all their apps are worth looking at.

Question: My phone is boot looping/not booting on the released suv, what do I do?
Answer: Your phone cannot handle the super undervolted values, you will need to flash the stable undervolted kernel
Question: My phone is running slow on the batterysave or scary governors, what do I do?
Answer: Set your minimum speed higher, those governors spend a lot of time at the lowest values
Question: How do I flash this?
Answer: You probably shouldn't be flashing one of my kernels if you don't know how(Mine are unstable =P)
Question: I'm not getting the amazing battery life/benchmark scores that others are getting
Answer: Well, every device is different, so you may not be able to score as high as some others, but you should get close at least, and the battery completely depends on usage patterns
Question: My phone can't clock to 1.8ghz, or some of the other higher values but does fine on the lower ones
Answer: Every device is different and not all can handle the same speeds/voltages, you are probably better off staying away from the higher speeds, I enabled the speeds but hope that you all are mature enough to handle them
Locating cpu% eating applications.
When in ADB shell type the following
top |grep app
Then look for items with high amounts of cpu% while the phone is idle.

Yeah both versions don't work on mine.
If you haven't been able to get past the HTC screen at boot and keep bootlooping, YOU MUST INSTALL BC'S 1.5 GHZ KERNEL FIRST AND THEN FLASH THESE KERNELS OVER THAT I also just flashed it straight off of a new Mikshift install and I got the bootloop until I did this. So if you guys didn't do this, then install bc's kernel and flash Scary kernel again.

Scaryghoul are the reposted links any different than the old kernels you had up the first time? If not, the suv build would boot and run, but after using the phone after awhile for cpu intensive tasks it would lock up and require a battery pull. Im wondering if just a tiny bit more voltage would solve this problem.
On the stable build, it would run a minute or so and always lock up and require a battery pull..

I don't know so much for the freezes, but I believe that the booting has to do with me using my old voltages, and sense handling things differently than aosp >.<
I'll redo the voltage table later.

The source code isn't actually the issue right now. Lack of motivation mainly, I would consider it more if I hadn't deleted my toolchain from my dev station, can't be bothered to get another one setup right now.
When I get motivated again I will, I honestly don't use my phone much anymore(maybe pick it up once or twice a day).

The ndk from google's web site has the toolchains needed to build gb kernel in it. The dl isn't terribly huge.

So basically this is a general discussion or chit chatting for all of you about which governer is better ,best etc. I/O schedulers etc.
You can also ask question, queries about your current settings is it good and etc.
There are also three sections in this post too. Recommended settings by me, Tested ones. And also ones that I am testing. Those that I have tested have my remarks on them too
RECOMMENDED
Here are my recommended No-Frills CPU settings:
Max:1200
Min:300
Gov. InteractiveX(Gives a lot of performance boost and also battery friendly)
I/O: BFQ(Im now checking out other IO schedulers after found a good or better one i will update )(and also Because it fixes this issue.)
These are the setting that gives me the best/positive results on my unit. I do not OC as I see no obvious differences in speed as these settings are already more than good enough. And furthermore OC will decrease the life of the device so no point.
TESTED
I have tested these:
Max:1200
Min: 300
Gov: Smartassv2
IO: SIO
Remarks: I have tested these and I must say the performance and battery life was almost as good as those of the recommended settings These do perform almost the same as the recommended ones but battery wise is definitely an out for these if compared to the recommended one. I personally would still recommend and prefer those in the recommended section as both almost perform the same and this is more unbattery friendly.
TESTING
This are the settings that I am testing now:
Max: 1000
Min: 300
Gov: Conservative
IO: Noop
Remarks: So as usual, I will test and report back after about a week. As of now, performance wise, these really lose out to all the others that are present in this post. But battery wise its definitely a clear winner

first i have to say that there are big differences in CPU-Tools... i got myself cpumaster,nofrills and finally setcpu... cpumaster made my phone laggy even with lionheartgovernors and stuff...nofrills has no support for different profiles...so i highly recommend invest the little mlney for the incredible setcpu. basically i use smartassV2 at 1000mhz min 300mhz with sio scheduler...and then much profiles like change to vr scheduler when playing videos or in call 600mhz max or at night when i sleel keep the phone at 300mhz max; )

Hi. I was just wondering... Do Kernel Govs and I/O selections match well with V6 Supercharger? Or is it better to supercharge with a stock kernel?
Sorry for the noob question. Im just concerned if its possible that all these mods im applying might be cancelling out each other at some point... Or worse might be contradicting each other too...

Nope they don't they do different things . Supercharger manages minfree values while governors and schedulers manage the CPU speed

This is my recommendation for SetCPU max 1200 min 300 gov interactiveX io:BFQ When asleep profile: Max 600 min 300 gov and io same as above

I know and i respect your effort, but these settings really depend on the user and how they use the device.
If i try the same settings and try it myself, i will probably have another opinion and other results.
Benchmarks mean nothing.
Also many other threads all over XDA were made to explain governors and I/O schedulers, and users can simply Google it and read, then chose what suits them.

Yea... but this is particularly for our device and I did do a remarks section to what is better for performance and battery. So that the user will better know which one suits them I didnt mention anything about benchmarks... right?

Also, it doesn't matter if it's for our device or not, the topic give YOU the best results, others will probably have to test themselves, so i still see no point in this.

Hi sorry but no or maybe no :silly: i was thinkin about it but im not a big fan of OC i can OC my PC ( actually higly OCed ) but not mobile chip i think we have enough of cpu power but maybe in future i will change my mind - just for now dont see any strong reason to do it

Good reason.
I think OC will be good but not as default.
Backporting i/o schedulers and governors from newest linux will be great too (mostly cfq, deadline and interactive).
Only request would be sound controls if possible to add from ex kernel or wherever...? Running alacurd and hotplug and it's buttery smooth and awesome battery! Good job with this bro

Hi sorry but no or maybe no :silly: i was thinkin about it but im not a big fan of OC i can OC my PC ( actually higly OCed ) but not mobile chip i think we have enough of cpu power but maybe in future i will change my mind - just for now dont see any strong reason to do it

The only OC that is useful for this phone is upping the big cores to 2.26ghz and the little to 1.72ghz. The voltage stays the same so you get a minor speed bump but power draw is identical. This in turn gives slightly better battery life because the phone can go back to idle slightly quicker. Anything higher starts causing the phone to thermal throttle much quicker, well in my case that is.
Also, I see you have implemented hotplugging, as mentioned in many different kernel threads for multiple devices that use big.LITTLE (OP3, S6, etc.) This is uncessary and causes more battery drain while also reducing performance because these cores were designed to go idle when not in use consuming nearly zero energy. Hotplugging makes these cores jump between on and off all the time and lower and higher frequencies because of the way big.LITTLE works which causes massive microstutter and also much higher battery drain.
In the good old S6 days a couple devs tried to implement it but it never worked no matter what they tried. Sultan, one our devs here, makes an amazing custom kernel/ROM combination. He had implemented hotplugging when he first released the kernel but it turned out to not fully work properly and caused extra battery drain and microstutters. He removed it and it fixed all the issues.
Edit: haven't used the kernel yet because cm14.1 is a bugfest so this is just speculation, you could have added a little magic and it performs super well.

I don't believe the hotplug theory, I've used it with and without hotplug on this device and the 6P and when using hotplug it clearly saved battery, by a good shot too! You dint have to use it, that's why u can enable/disable, but I'm sure it saves battery as I've tested with it enabled and disabled two devices with the big.LITTLE setup. And honestly, besides one other kernel that is not in these threads, this is the best kernel I've used to date for the OP3, on CM that is, not stock. I've ran ex, boeffla, all CM kernels and as I mentioned one other not located in these threads and that one and this are damn good, they each have their benefits, and the hotplug def saved battery as I've already passed my regular SOT at 40 percent left. Of course I will test without, but with my previous tests on the 6P the hotplug continuously saved battery. Sometimes it mate cause stutter or slowness, but I have not noticed that on the OP3 as of yet, it hasn't slowed a thing down, and there are 2 hotplug options in this kernel, and the hotplug in the 6P was msm which is not one that's in this kernel. This has two other options, alacurd and autosmp.
OC - as i said if there are solid reasons then yes might think about it . But from theory higher frequency equals higher temp and faster thermal throttling
Hotplugging - never heard about theory that make hotplugging causing more battery drain than keeping all clusters/cores online it is a bit non sense for me. Anyway stock Qualcomm kernels are hotplugged using msm performance and core ctl . As i dont like them they been replaced by custom made hotplugging drivers that are optional you can activate and deactivate driver as you wish
CM14.1 - I was on official and now on RR and havent noticed any major bugs neither small ones , they are solid enough to be a daily drivers
