Is downgrade possible? - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, just a couple noob questions:
I'm planning to update to Marshmallow but, if I don't like it can I go back to Lollipop?
This is because maybe I'll have bugs like most people here and also because I want to root it(when they find an exploit) and that can only be done while in Lollipop am I right?
Thank you for your help.

Yes you can go back to lollipop if you want by flashing lollipop firmware with flashtool.
There is root for MM.

Is there root?
But I have to unlock the bootloader right? I'll just wait until there's a way to root without doing that.

No that's not right if an exploit is found on marshmallow then there would not be need to go to lollipop unless the exploit was found on lollipop. Also marshmallow has far less bugs than lollipop. But as @gm007 said there is unlocked bootloader root and you can downgrade by flashing firmware with flashtool

In case if you didn't know, if you're waiting for root without unlock because of the loss of functions e.g x-reality etc., check this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z5/development/sony-credentials-restore-unlocking-t3296383
(Sony credentials restore after unlocking the bootloader), It simulates the sony credentials to get the sony functions back.
If you are waiting for different reason, just ignore my post.

Thank you for your help guys, I'll update to Marshmallow and just keep waiting, I'm familiar with waiting since the PSP and PS3 era.

[Q] How do I root my Sony Xperia Z3 d6603?

Hi
I just got my phone, but missing the benefits of rooting.
Can anyone tell me how to unlock the bootloader and then root my phone?
Found a lot of links, but not sure which are secure and not to use.
Here's where you go to unlock your bootloader - http://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/unlock-yourboot-loader/
Once unlocked, you can flash root or do whatever at that point.
Warning though, you will lose your DRM keys in this process, if you don't know what that means, do some research

Is their any way to back them up? So if I ever regret, I can get them back?
Also, is it possible or will it ever be possible to root with an locked bootloader?

You need root to backup DRM keys.
You cant get root without unlocking the bootloader yet.
Youll lose DRM keys when you unlock the bootloader.
If you cant take losing your DRM keys do not unlock and root.

Last question. I got Samsung before and I was able to update my phone with Kies after rooting. Is their any way to update Sony devices when rooted?
Thanks
Flashtool or PC Companion. I prefer the latter.

You sure? As the DRM keys doesn't matter for me, as I don't really use the camera a lot.
But when I unlock bootloader on Sonys website, it tells me I would not be able to get updates from that. But i'm still able to get them with the PC companion?
Just to make sure, as I really want android 5.0 when it comes out.

You can't update with PC companion if you have unlocked your booloader. Your phone will be bricked!

No way to know for sure until someone tries. But with the Z2, you just have to relock your bootloader (might need to revert to a stock kernel first) and then software updates work fine.

There will always be FTF files shared on XDA and you can use flashtool with an unlocked bootloader.

There is no need to spam multiple topics.
YES, it can be done. NO, we can't tell you how because you didn't post your phone model or Android version.

Hej robogo1982, jesi dobio moju poruku u privat?

Will the T Mobile variant of the Z3 (D6616) ever get a working root?

I bought the Z3 recently coming from a rooted Galaxy S4 and damn do I miss a lot of the little features of the custom ROM I had. I thought I could do without the root but I really would like to have Carbon ROM again but on my Z3. Sorry if this has been asked many times before.

The D6616 has a locked bootloader, so no custom roms as far as I know. Only Sony knows how to unlock it. As for root, we must wait for another exploit that would allow root access on this version of the Xperia Z3. There's nothing else to do but wait.

Another exploit is not needed. In theory giefroot would work. However the parameters of the memory allocation are needed in order for the exploit to work. They can only be found from rooted devices (Hence why unlocked bootloader devices were asked for in the development of the tool)
As the D6616 has no unlocked bootloaders that info can not be found. It could be done by trial and error, if you have several years to try each one....

Damn okay. What phone would you recommend that I can root right now?

[Q] I have some questions, can you guys help me?

Hi guys!
Now that is possible to root our beloved Xperia Z3 with locked BL I have some questions before start messing with mine here.
If I root with @zxz0O0´s method I can no longer use OTA to get Lollipop right?
But, that´s ok because I can always get back here a couple days after Lollipop gets released and get if from XDA right?
And that way I can get it also rooted?
I thank you for your time and have a great day :victory:
Yes for both questions
Thanks man!
Already rooted my Z3 and I'm just waiting for Lollipop here
Me too
Lol
You can still get ota if you are rooted. You can also use pccompanion. But it will probably lose the root.
The only issue with ota is with an unlocked bootloader, and then it is only advisable not to do an ota update. Also with an unlocked boot you cannot use pccompanion

Going from Z to Z5 Compact - downgrade to 4.42?

Evening all,
Just placed an order for the Z5 Compact after my Z has started playing up after 3 years of use,
Basically I had mine rooted a long time ago, and I havnt really touched it since or done any rooting/customization in ages and im drawing a blank..
Basically want to root the Z5 and downgrade to the 4.42 firmware as I have on my Z, as I dislike the 5.51 software the menu options etc looks very tacky for stock Sony layout, and it looks like 6 marshmallow is the same.
Is this feasible or reccomended?
Is there a step by step guide I can follow as I am seriously ****e with computers and all this stuff, I also wanted to learn about and if there are guides on how I can customise the menu etc If I can keep 5.51 or even upgrade to 6.0 and root the device and install a custom theme and change the menu layout etc?
Is this possible at all, I know people have custom software but I havnt a clue on how to go about rooting it let alone customising it...
Any help much appreciated!

Im planning on rooting from 5.51 found a decent guide with use of command prompt so should be easy I hope! Is there an app/program downloadable after root which will allow me to apply custom themes/ menu layouts.
I can only remember Super SU, and theres an aptoide one I had iirc
hey. no offense but i'd suggest you read and learn a bit more about rooting newer xperia devices before you do any mistake.
its for sure no easy thing if you arent much into this stuff. just to mention one thing: at this moment there is no way to root the z5
with locked bootloader. unlocking your bootloader means, that you most probably lose your warranty and the drm keys. those keys
can be simulated by a workaround, but infact they are gone forever without any chance to restore them.
in the end, rooting the z5 now is a process of unlocking bootloader (via flashtool or adb), flash kernel via adb, flash twrp recovery via adb
and finally install supersu via twrp flash.
these should be enough keywords to google for, and/or getting knowledge here in xda forums. once again, i just can advice
you read all those guides twice....

DRM keys arent really required though are they? are they not restorable/ way to back them up prior, ive googled Z5 compact root and ive got loads of links on search results though
Voiding warranty of new device and god knows what will be with restored fake DRM keys with further updates, and no, there is NO rooting Z5 series with having Bootloader locked for now, i doubt there will ever be a method but hope im wrong. You might want to reconsider Z5 series, replace your Z with Z3 that is easily rootable even with locked BL and is on Marshmallow list.

well, the drm keys are required for e.g. x-reality, camera postprocessing, ps controller support and much more. at the moment the drm restore patch works, but who knows, google or sony could counterpatch this aswell. you can only backup them with root. to get root you need to unlock your bootloader first. unlock bootloader = drm key lost forever. you cant lock your bootloader without original drm keys, and with unlocked bootloader you dont have ota updates and pc companion wont work anymore. means, you always have to update manually with
flashtool.
Really?! Cause with my Z I could link up with pc companion and do a factory reset which wiped out the root and everything on it when it froze up..
What about the main thread on this forum... is there any other reading or threads/guides in relation to this

If you use systemless root, you should be able to take updates; you'll have to unlock the bootloader and flash a custom kernel. Take a look at either SuperSU or Magisk.
Why would you need OTA, just flash newest version with flashtool and that's it.
And the most easiest way to root, is to :
unlock bootloader, flash latest 32.2.A.5.11 firmware using flashtool, and then flash patched stock kernel( twrp included), and flash latest supersu using TWRP (it will be installed systemless). Cheers
You won't receive any OTAs once you unlock your bootloader.

As far as I know, there is currently no way of rooting Xperia Z5 without unlocking the bootloader. If you decide to do so, don't forget to take TA backup before doing it.

BACKUP DRM KEYS BEFORE UNLOCKING !!!!! Just in case anything goes wrong and you need to take your phone to service center (so you won't void your warrenty)
