I just got my phone, but missing the benefits of rooting.
Can anyone tell me how to unlock the bootloader and then root my phone?
Found a lot of links, but not sure which are secure and not to use.

Once unlocked, you can flash root or do whatever at that point.
Warning though, you will lose your DRM keys in this process, if you don't know what that means, do some research

Is their any way to back them up? So if I ever regret, I can get them back?
Also, is it possible or will it ever be possible to root with an locked bootloader?

You need root to backup DRM keys.
You cant get root without unlocking the bootloader yet.
Youll lose DRM keys when you unlock the bootloader.
If you cant take losing your DRM keys do not unlock and root.

Last question. I got Samsung before and I was able to update my phone with Kies after rooting. Is their any way to update Sony devices when rooted?

You sure? As the DRM keys doesn't matter for me, as I don't really use the camera a lot.
But when I unlock bootloader on Sonys website, it tells me I would not be able to get updates from that. But i'm still able to get them with the PC companion?
Just to make sure, as I really want android 5.0 when it comes out.

You can't update with PC companion if you have unlocked your booloader. Your phone will be bricked!

No way to know for sure until someone tries. But with the Z2, you just have to relock your bootloader (might need to revert to a stock kernel first) and then software updates work fine.

There will always be FTF files shared on XDA and you can use flashtool with an unlocked bootloader.

Unlock the bootloader via the official way, flash a custom kernel
My bootloader is already unlocked, where can I get a custom kernel? My z3 was root with ftf.... 98 after upgrade to.... 77 I lost my root! Thank you for helping!!

Take a look in the development section
In need of some help, I wanted to root my z3 again, I've downgraded back to .77 but completely forgot how I done it last time, I created a few pre-rooted flashables (.77, .690 & .726) but I'm having trouble finding how to install custom recovery.. Any help would be greatly appreciated

There are chances of creating a new method for ROOT, which is safer and you do not need to unlock the BootLoader?
Well I just bought my phone and I do not want to void the warranty.
The ROOT can usually be reversed without major problems.

You don't need to unlock bootloaders to root. You can root and then restore to stock if need be without voiding anything.

There's a lot of FTF for offical one's.
I root by the framaroot app, and works fine, have an option to unroot device,
I'm working on adding support for the Xperia Z5 to the WinDroid Universal Android Toolkit, but I don't have an Xperia to test everything I need. Can someone confirm if "fastboot getvar imei" actually returns the IMEI? I may also need some testers in the near future once everything has been coded. Thanks!

Thanks, that's what I was afraid of. This means there's no easy way to get the IMEI through ADB or Fastboot, which makes the coding a little harder. I'll just have to work around that.
I've added support for the Xperia Z5 in my toolkit, and I'd appreciate if a few people could test it out and confirm that it actually unlocks, flashes and roots correctly.

It's an exe. It looks like the upload messed up the file extension. I fixed the link so it'll download correctly.

Am i missing something here? The toolkit roots the phone without unlocking the bootloader first? How are you backing up the DRM keys???

The toolkit unlocks the bootloader, flashes TWRP, then pushes SuperSU, a rooted boot image and the Restore DRM zip that someone released which mimics the DRM keys. I'm hoping someone can confirm that it's all working correctly before I officially release it.

Ok, i understand, but since it unlocks bootloader first you should warn users that the DRM keys will be gone forever. Yes the restore drm zip should bring some of the functionality back but the device keys themselves are gone for good (you might need them for warranty or something...)
If i ever make the jump to z5 i want to be able to backup the drm keys, that's why i've been checking around here
You toolkit does seems nice, makes unlocking BL and setting up recovery & root very easy. If i had a z5 and was willing to sacrifice keys i would use it :good:

Unfortunately my phone is not allowed to unlock bootloader

If you use systemless root, you should be able to take updates; you'll have to unlock the bootloader and flash a custom kernel. Take a look at either SuperSU or Magisk.
Why would you need OTA, just flash newest version with flashtool and that's it.
And the most easiest way to root, is to :
unlock bootloader, flash latest 32.2.A.5.11 firmware using flashtool, and then flash patched stock kernel( twrp included), and flash latest supersu using TWRP (it will be installed systemless). Cheers

As far as I know, there is currently no way of rooting Xperia Z5 without unlocking the bootloader. If you decide to do so, don't forget to take TA backup before doing it.

Nah, it just fails to unlock.
BACKUP DRM KEYS BEFORE UNLOCKING !!!!! Just in case anything goes wrong and you need to take your phone to service center (so you won't void your warrenty)
His guys just got the xzp and wow what a phone my only concern is root I have a locked bootloader and it's not unlockable but to be fair I've never unlocked a Xperia bootloader due to loosing drm keys etc
So my question is will we be able to get root on locked bootloaders like we did with past Xperia phones or are we stuck unless we unlock which in my case would mead no root ever :crying:

Probably not would be my guess. You still need to unlock bootloader on previous models such as XZ/XZS.

Darn I love this device too but to never be able to have root might be a deal breaker
In service menu it says unlock bootloader allowed no but in developer options it give me the option to unlock the bootloader does this mean it's possible for me to unlock the bootloader

One question if I stay with the xzp cam I at least flash the latest stock UK unbranded room with a locked bootloader so I can get rid of my carrier stuff thanks

Like always, if a security breach is found on Android that allow getting root access, it will be possible to backup the DRM partition, then after if you like, unlocking the bootloader and then restore your DRM partition.
At least, it finished like this for the Z5, but you had to downgrade to Lollipop to get root access.
AFAIK, there is no known way to get root on Nougat today.

So there is the Dirty Cow exploit that seems pretty pervasive and promising.

It's not possible anymore. You really need to unlock the bootloader in order to root. Something about patching the kernel.

If you unlocked because you wanted root or custom firmware and lost the sony features for camera and want to revert back. You cannot do so until there is an drm fix or if you had your ta backed up. relocking will do nothing.

What warranty? As soon as u unlocked the bootloader the warranty is no longer valid as per the terms and conditions u read when u done it
But when you do backup of DRM keys first of course if it possible. And restore them before give Phone on warranty. And relock bootloader warrianty will be works. But if you lose DRM key without backup. The bootloader not be relock.

There's a hack/mod here that offers a DRM fix, but no DRM restoration. https://forum.xda-developers.com/xz...hack-mod-sony-xperia-xz-premium-twrp-t3695171
Basically we can root now. I think you can just relock the bootloader (to remove the unlocked message on boot thing) if you're going to send your device in for repairs.
