Does anyone else receive extremely low quality MMS messages? Any MMS message that is sent to me is less than 20kb. I have tried using both the stock messenger and google messenger with the same results.
I don't know about receiving, but I noticed on my AT&T model that Google Messenger send MMS photos in terrible quality. Sending them from Samsung Messages makes them look much better on the other end.
Open messages app click on more > settings > chat settings > image quality
Samsung has it set to 'best available' by default just set it to 'original'.

My S7 sends MMS messages with high quality using either the Stock Messenger app or Google Messages. Receiving is where I get low image quality

It appears as if my Verizon version does not have this option. I am coming from a Note 5, and the MMS messages I received are fine so I do not think it is the limits of the carrier, however something with the S7

Same issue here and image quality option not there. Poor resolution on Pics sent Via Google messenger on VZW. I'm on a HTC One M8. Any suggestions ?
This problem has been plaguing me for over a year, this is them most helpful information I have found. https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/5gk4y0/mms_resizing_verizon/#bottom-comments
From what I can tell, if Verizon doesn't recognize your phone (mine is on a custom rom) Verizon servers automatically compress incoming MMS to 30-40KB.
"Pixel is resizing the images much more than they should. Take a look at the google pixel product forum. There are many complaints about this.
Every other comment so far is wrong, it's not just due to MMS. Yes MMS compresses/resizes the images to get a smaller file size, but no carrier restricts the image size down to the 30-40KB that Pixel is receiving.
From what I can tell the phone isn't in the carriers MMS phone info database yet, so it doesn't know the phone's capabilities so it defaults to a really old, flip phone user agent that restricts incoming MMS images to 30-40KB.
I have seen other reports of brand new phones having the exact same issue.
So hopefully it's just a matter of time before the carriers fix this.
Edit: I almost forgot, to prove this is an MMS issue and not 'just the way MMS works', download Textra or Chomp and under MMS settings choose Legacy instead of System. I'm not sure what it does, but it forces some other MMS settings to be used and will allow you to receive much higher quality photos."
I finally got it to work better by using Textra and setting it to "legacy" MMS.

Hello!
I have a Samsung Note 8 and I had the same problem, but I fixed it. I am not sure if the set up works the same for all Galaxy cellphones, give it a go anyway
Here's what I did;
° Go to your Messages Settings.
° Under Settings <--> Chat Settings
° Chat Setting <--> Image Size
° Under Image Size you'll have five
(5) selections.
1. Best available
2. Original
3. Large (50%)
4. Medium (20%)
5. Small (10%)
I picked Original. But you can choose the sizes of your choice.
Under "Multimedia Limit" you'll have 2 choices.
1. Automatically accept all
2. Automatically accept files less than 9765 MB in size.
I chose "Automatically accept all"
Good luck!
Marie
If you're on Sprint, they have an algorithm that catches MMS from the stock messenger app and auto downgrades the quality. Third party messenger apps won't, I can only guess the MMS signature is different, so the network doesn't know the type of content and can't auto 1995 picture.
EDIT: To clarify, this does not occur on iOS since all messages route through Apple Servers.

Thanks a million. Your advice just made my old Verizon Galaxy S5 running LOS 15.1 start receiving MMS at a much more acceptable size than before. Now I'd just love to know exactly what Textra's doing to make things work so happily!

Are you having this problem on both 3G and Edge or just when you are on Edge?
your not trying to send it through google voice are you?
I had trouble with mine on EDGE. The solution was to get Handcent SMS and set the size of the MMS.
Settings->Send message settings->Maximum MMS size and I set it to 100k
No problems since.

I am also having this problem. I found that it was only an issue on Edge.... which is all that is available here. Pretty much rendering my MMS messages useless. Along with GPS. So im quite displeased at this moment.
As for the Settings = send message settings above thing .... I do not see the "Send MEssage Settings" option anywhere. Not in Message Settings or in regular Settings. Any particular place for it? Hope it works if i find it. Frustrated.
Correction - I see you mean to get the program Handcent SMS. Though that actually pisses me off more that I have to get a program to send on Edge, I will give it a shot.
Works
I can confirm that the Handcent SMS app on the Marketplace works for MMS on Edge network. Thanks for the tip off good sir.
If you're running Stock JF6 ROM and only has EDGE signal, you have two choices:
1. Some how shrink the picture down to 100k or so. Anything bigger won't send over EDGE. It is one of the known bugs in stock ROM.
2. You can flash to the newer leaked beta ROM. This bug has been addressed in newer ROMs.
Or you can wait for the official ROM update that fixes GPS among other things. No one know when that will happen yet.
Question for mmm_tacos
mmm_tacos -
Did you find a way to disable the regular Messaging system so you dont get two notifications for every text/MMS message received?

You should be able to open the stock Messaging application and hit your menu button and go to settings and go to Notifications and uncheck it.

I can send a MMS, but cant receive one.
Those I send it to do receive it.
When I receive a MMS I get a Txt which has a 'Download' button in it. I try to download but it doesnt work, even if the photo is tiny.
Im on JH7
i did a search and didn't see anyone with the same problem. i was able to receive pics from other people, but i when i try to send it to them, they don't receive it. my phone shown sent but they don't even get a text at all. i can however send pic text to myself and receive it. this was from using the stock app.
i then switched to handcent sms and uninstalled the regular text app. i can't receive pic or send pic to them. i can't even receive the pic text i sent to myself. is there some kind of setting i'm suppose to set it to?
Under settings->send->maximum size, make sure it's set to default 1M. My was set to 5M for some reason and mms never worked right (oversized).
tried that, still doesn't work with sending pic text or receiving.

Hmm.. I can't seem to find this setting..?
I just realized I can receive mms but not send.
I currently use Handsent SMS and prefer it over the stock texting app. However I did not remove that. You SHOULD keep it, then set Handcent as your default and get rid of all notifications on the settings of your default text program.
I have a similar issue with you only i removed the stock calander and now my 3rd party calander app wont work
sending video to iPhone problem
I searched, but didn't come upon a thread about MMS video problems, but this was the closest thread in nature...
anyone having problems sending video MMS to specifically iPhones? I am able to send to MMS vids to other phones (other Android phones), but when I send a video to an iPhone, they receive it but the sound is garbled when played. Same results happen with both the stock messaging app and Handcent.
(MMS pictures work fine though)
In the video settings of the camera, I have the "Duration" set to 'MMS' and then I've even tried both "Video Sizes"...QVGA and QCIF. All the test video messages I sent to my wife's iPhone have been about 100-150Kb in size. When she receives the video, it plays but the sound is garbled and can't distinguish anything being said.
Any help would be appreciated since my wife likes to receive clips of our baby son while she's at work etc.

random, but know a guy that works for LG in the mobile department. I asked him about a software update and he replied with the following:
"Yes, there is a software update coming. It should have been out 2 weeks ago, but at the time T-Mobile was thinking of just lumping it in with the Gingerbread update. Now that the Gingerbread update is being moved back to early June (last minute bugs need worked out), we convinced them to let us push the update so at least the users who are experiencing powercycling, freezing, and wifi sleeping will be taken care of."
Compress the pics to 100kb or less and they should go through! Use handcent mms and it compresses them for you.

I hope that is true, that update being held is doing nothing except making G2x owners look for other smartphones, not to mention potential G2x owners reading all these bad reviews around the forums won't even consider buying a G2x.
So I really don't understand why they would delay the patch when they know it's more than likely going to hurt the sales of the phone.
These companies seem to always make really dumb choices.
Happy customers equal BIGGER profits in the long run, that should be the main goal IMHO.

has the phone been flashed a custom rom?
if so go into messages > settings> and switch the mms client
so nobody else has any problems sending videos to iPhones? pictures and regular texts go through fine, it's only the audio of the video part that is all garbled and messed up. my G2x is a stock non-rooted phone with the stock messaging app. (i've tried handcent and Go SMS and the vids still don't go through correctly to iPhones).
as for the patch, i asked him when LG is planning to release it...he made it seem like it should be soon.
I had this problem until I downloaded Go sms and changed my mms size to 5M and then set my user agent to Default Android.
I'm going nuts trying to figure out how to fix my MMS issues — maybe you guys can help. I have an unrooted N5 running 4.4.4 that is inconsistently receiving MMS messages (both photos and group texts). I'm currently using StraightTalk, though I was having the same issue with Cricket.
My APN settings are correct (from what I can figure), and sometimes I receive incoming MMS. I currently have Textra and GoSMS installed as my texting apps, with GoSMS currently as my default. Occasionally I'll receive an error in GoSMS that an MMS message was unable to be downloaded, and try as I may, I can never get the app to download and display it. However, if I open up Textra, the message will have come through there with no problem. So basically, unless I have 2 apps gathering MMS, I'll miss half of them. I only installed GoSMS after seeing it as a suggestion/solution in another forum - this was happening before I both installed. I was originally using Hangouts for SMS/MMS, which was having the same problem (and why I initially DL'd Textra).
I occasionally have issues sending out an MMS. It's a less frequent occurrence than the issues receiving, though it does happen.
I am thinking that if this was a network issue, the MMS wouldn't come through to my phone at all, so I've stopped trying to mess with my APN. Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this?
I have Straight Talk too and been having issues with MMS i'm using 8sms. I have the old 3g sims card. what about you ?

I'm currently having the same issue with a non rooted device.
I was originally with H20 (an AT&T mvno) and would have periodic issues with MMS. Both sending and receiving. I am using Google Hangouts.
I recently switched to Cricket (owned by AT&T) earlier this month (reasons unrelated), and have not been able to send or receive an MMS since. I have spent several hours on the phone with both Cricket and LG, even going into a store to have my SIM replaced. I came across this thread accidentally while looking for suggestions on the best way to do a backup before I try a factory reset as a last resort to resolve the problem.
APN has been verified correct numerous times and unfortunately, Cricket's cust service is next to useless. After two and a half weeks and numerous calls, I still have yet to hear back from a Tech Support rep. I'm not sure whose network straight talk uses, but I wonder if it's a network issue with AT&T subcarriers?
The most frustrating part is every time I talk to somewhat at Cricket cust service, they say that the Nexus 5 is not "officially supported" on their network and that it is probably a phone issue and try to sell me a new phone. When I explain that the Nexus 5 runs stock Android, they try and tell me that that might be the problem *SMH*.
Anyone else?

Yes me too. I found out today that my G2 can't get MMS at all. I've tried tons of fixes and nothing seems to work.
No sure if anyone is still experiencing the MMS issues on Nexus 5 as I am. I have a stock, unrooted N5 running Android 4.4.4 on Tmobile. GoSMS is my default sms client. What happens totally randomly is that I COMPLETELY lose the ability to send/receive MMS picture messages (group messages that come in as MMS are unaffected). Once I lose MMS, ALL text I have which have picture messages attached change from viewable icons to blank images or "Xs". All MMS messages in go become white boxes that say "picture does not exist). It has not mattered if I have taken all other text clients off the phone and used ONLY Hangouts as the default, it still happens. This is the ONLY solution I've found to fix the issue:
1) Set Hangout as default sms client
2) Reset APNs to default (settings-->SMS-->Access Point Names--> hit three dots-->reset to default)
3) Go to main phone settings (Settings-->More-->Mobile Networks-->Access Point Names), reset to default
4) Select the APNs that your device normally uses (for me, its fast.t-mobile.com), set MMS Port to 8080 and save APN
5) go back into Hangouts, select the same APN (fast.t-mobile.com), set the MMS Port to 8080 and save APN
6) Reboot phone
Once its rebooted, if your MMS images are once again viewable in Hangouts, its fixed and you can send/receive picture messages again. You can now switch to whatever default client you chose. This has worked for me EVERY time to 'fix' the MMS issue, but what I have never figured out is WHY its happening and I can't pinpoint exactly when it started. I want to say the update to 4.4.2 may have triggered it, but I honestly can't recall. I know this wasn't ALWAYS an issue. If anyone else has any theories/ideas, I'm all ears. Its just a pain in the a** to have to reset the APNS in two spots and reboot every time this happens (I think I read that Hangouts' APN settings can override the system APN settings so that's why I reset in both spots). I've tried ONLY resetting the main phone's APN and it didn't fix the issue.

**com.qualcomm.qcrilmsgtunnel** is your gn0me in the engine;
where sms/ mms is *natively* transported via the native phone functions & hooks, hangouts provides the same functionality *over the top* of the carrier's route, strictly IP; call it hi-jacking in a sense, that's what you en-able hangouts to do on reboots, hijack those functions..
*SIM toolkit
*Phone/Messaging storage
*Phone
is what com.qualcomm.qcrilmsgtunnel is tied to, which hangouts, isn't..
Last update to hangouts screwed up my APN setting. ?

For the love of God...why is there always a subject line when I send a MMS to someone? I have turned off this option in settings, yet they still see this when I send a picture or am part of a group message. Very annoying and completely unnecessary
I believe it is a common problem for stock SMS/MMS app on T-Mobile network. Have had this issue since Note 4. I resort to use 3rd party SMS app such as Textra to eliminate the subject line.
Just saw this sorry...damn. Well I'll start using Google messenger then. Thanks
I must be overlooking something cause whenever I send a MMS or group text I don't see a subject line, my N2 was the same way l. On my N2 often when I received a MMS I would see a subject line but not when I send one. I don't see a setting on my N5 to turn off/on subject line.
I didn't see the subject line either but the recipient would. And the option is under messages settings > more settings > multi media
I was going to say I guess it differs by carrier/variant but since you are posting in the Tmo section I assuming you have a Tmo variant. My N920T does not have that setting & I verified with a couple of people that received MMS & group texts that they do not see a subject line from me.
Lol that is weird. Yea I have the T-Mobile variant as well and I have that option. Weird
Yeah that is weird but then again I'm running a stock modified OI5 rom. Not sure if that's why but I don't recall seeing anything about the stock messenger app being modified.
I have the LG G8 thinq phone on TMobile. I've used the LG SMS app but the "Subject: NOSUBJECT" is really annoying and I can't turn it off. See it on/off in group texts and always when a photo is sent. Switching to Google SMS (boring) eliminates the Subject/NOSUBJECT but I'll try Texstra next. There is no setting in the LG SMS to turn it on/off nor do senders (Android Samsung and iPhone) that affects this.
*SOLVED* (See my post #11)
Hello all,
I'm having trouble getting any text on my U12+. I've seen one other case on androidCentral forums but not much of any results. Figure i would chime in and see if anyone else figured this out.
I had this issue as well. I had to go to a Verizon store and get a new sim card, which he activated in my old HTC 10 then put into the U12+. After that the tech suspended my sms service then reactivated and I was good to go. The only issue I have is that I can not receive MMS messages from any 3rd party app, so I am stuck using the stock one.
Call Verizon -- spent 3 minutes with a level 1 technician who re-provisioned the phone for sms & mms. All is working as expected (although the stock messaging system wouldn't send GIFs, but I downloaded Textra and it works fine).

Soooooooo, it turns out there's an MMS bug with Textra which hasn't been fixed yet. I tried all the suggested steps (clean install, change MMS behavior, modify APN settings, etc) and MMS doesn't work with Textra. I emailed the developers and we'll see what happens.
I then downloaded Pulse and everything works as expected with that app. Not sure about any other third party messaging apps right now.

I emailed textra support over the weekend and after running through all the settings, they had me install android messages and that did not work with MMS as well. I tried with a few other 3rd party apps and they came to the conclusion that it is an android Oreo bug and they can't do anything to fix it.
Thanks everyone! I will try the steps mentioned above and report back.
Interestingly enough mms receive works for me on Verizon messages and the default htc text app. It does not work (just receiving pics) in Textra or Android messages. This feels like an OS side issue? I was on the phone with tier 2 support when I first got it and they reprovisioned twice. Then said just use the apps that work lol

I factory reset twice, reset network settings twice but still same problem. Also tried the android messages app and Verizon app.

BUT he dug deep and did what he called a "CDMA list feature activation"
and then my text and mms started coming through in android messages. also voicemail. apparently that was also affected.
Hope that helps everybody. call support and let them know about this. skip the guess work.

and then my text and mms started coming through in android messages. also voicemail. apparently that was also affected.
Hope that helps everybody. call support and let them know about this. skip the guess work.

Have you tried using a 3rd part app for texting like Textra to see if it works? I can only use the default stock app but called to see if this would fix anything on my end. Level 2 support told me that the CDMA list feature was already activated and they could not remove it from my account as it was active.

All I use is Android messager and occasionally switch to the stock messenger to send higher quality picture messages. So far everything I've done on Android messager is working.

Guess I'm stuck with stock, I sent myself a picture with android messenger that timed out and said "Message expired or not available". Very annoying whatever is going on.

Textra developer suggested turning off MMS Auto Retrieve in stock messaging app, rebooting, and trying to do MMS with Textra again. It didn't work for me, but can't hurt you to try it with android messenger. Even with Textra MMS timeout issues, Pulse is working perfectly for me. Maybe give that app a shot? YMMV ... just throwing out some ideas for you.

Just tried it, no go as well. Funny thing is, i froze the stock messages with titanium as well, but it thawed itself on reboot. I'll give Pulse a try, does it compress images sent?

Not 100% sure about compression, but there didn't seem to be any loss in quality when I texted pictures or animated GIFs to myself

Pulse works great, wonder why other apps are having issues. Thanks for the recommendation!
