Perhaps I'm a terrible person... - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Guides, News, & Discussion

Perhaps I'm a terrible person... but until I can root this thing the magic just isn't there between us. :crying:

I'm sure it will get rooted soon. Usually only takes a couple of weeks after the official release (based on past experiences)

I'm playing with Samsung pay right now and really digging it. Rooting is supposedly supposed to disable samsung pay. Of course having an at&t device may make that a mute point. They've been all but impossible to root lately.

Don't worry, T-Mobile may be in the same boat.

While there are still advantages to rooting (man, I miss what I did to my old LG Optimus back in in 2011), it's not nearly as big of a deal to me now. With my work email app, I unfortunately can't root anymore (it still detects root even with xposed root hiding apps) and I haven't really missed it. I probably missed it the most on the Nexus 6P due to the fact that it's vanilla Android. But with all the themes and options available now, I'm just fine with stock.

I mostly agree... these days flashing a custom rom isn't as necessary as it used to be. But boy are there a lot of things I'd like to do with my stock rom:
Titanium Backup
Custom recovery (TWRP!)
Xposed
All the great apps (Root Explorer, Greenify, etc.)

Without root there really is no need for customer recovery or Titanium Backup, as those are usually just used for flashing ROMs. So the only things you really want are Xposed and some root apps.

Umm... with my new Galaxy S7 Titanium Backup sure would come in handy right now.
And even afterwards I like having app backups so I can restore an app to a previous version or configuration -- I don't do it often, but I do do it. Same thing for having a periodic nandroid backup with all my data (wifi passwords, messages, dictionary, etc... there's a lot of data in there). And besides all the apps there's just a ton of tweaking that you really need root to do. Silence camera, record calls, adblocker, etc etc.

System App Remover Best Option?

I know this might be blasphemy to say, but after messing around with Super Clean ROM I think rooting and using System App Remover is a better option.
I missed the silly things with the Super Clean ROM like the puzzle sms or missed call. I also enjoyed the stock calculator and alarm clock a lot better. After a few weeks of Super Clean ROM, I used the posted Odin tools instructions to do a factory reset and installed the Voodoo kernel.
After which, I installed System App Remover and got rid of all the junk apps and put on Launcher Pro. I find the phone to be as speedy as Super Clean ROM and love having some of the "silly" perks back.
Has anyone else gone this route?
I am using a stock ROM with the Voodoo kernel. I have unwanted apps 'frozen' with Titanium backup.
I won't be using a custom ROM untill there's a real AOSP build out. IMO (and no offense to anyone) there's not much benefit to using something like a "clean" ROM other than personal preference.

Which apps did you remove from the stock ROM? I removed a couple so far with Titanium Backup in "Chuck Norris" Mode. Is there a list of system apps out there that the system doesn't need?
Why not just use the pick-n-pack rom? It's much less work and the phone will be faster.

The phone will use less memory at runtime IF you pack less apps, but the same effect can be achieved by freezing apps with Titanium backup. What really helps right now is the Voodoo kernel. If you want to experiment with the pick and pack though go ahead (= But as far as giving straight advice, both methods are equally viable.

I havent seemed to have a whole lot of luck with the "aftermarket" roms. The only one thats really worked for me is the factory rooted rom you flash to get root initially. I have tried AOKP, CM10(one of which did something causing me to need a new sim card to get 4g working again, even after flashing back to factory stock and doing a factory format) and a few stock-based roms(one of which didnt seem to have solid data connections, the other would get stuck at the boot logo for 30 minutes and would never boot.)
My suggestion, if you do root, back-up your IMEI data. There is a thread on this in the development section.
I've been running Synergy and loving it. If there is nothing you want to do extra with your phone then why go to the trouble of rooting it? That said, by rooting you can do things such as install Cerberus (anti-theft software) so that if someone steals your phone they can't even uninstall it. It allows you to remove the bloat that comes with your phone as well.

Rooting it and flashing a rather vanilla kind of stock ROM so that it has less applications that will hardly if ever be used. Check out kyanROM, that's the ROM I'm currently using and it saves me a ton of battery!

I flashed the rt66 ROM on the first boot out of the box & I absolutely LOVE it.
I then debloated it, installed AdFree, flashed CWM & installed free wireless tether to take advantage of my unlimited data.
I made a few visual tweaks, changed the battery icon to a white digital readout to get rid of the ugly green battery that didn't match anything else, got rid of the GPS icon etc etc. I use Nova launcher (switched from Apex) mainly to get a landscape home screen option.
I absolutely LOVE my setup, it flies & I have not had one single problem yet. I have yet to have a single FC or freezeup & I couldn't be happier with it.

Why root a Nexus 5?

Hi guys,
Just got a Nexus 5, had previously had a Samsung Galaxy S3.
My S3 was rooted, mainly to get rid of carrier bloatware and later because I wanted the Android 4.2 camera with Photosphere (my carrier was stuck on 4.1 until a few months ago).
As time wore on my device had numerous problems ultimately I felt related to rooting, I could never find ROM's with at least one major glitch. I ended up on a stock ROM for most the time with the only root change was flashing the 4.2 camera for Photosphere. Rooting in general I found caused more headaches than it was worth.
Anyways, I just got the Nexus 5 and have no real intention to root it. Since it's devoid of carrier bloatware and it runs super fast and responsive, just wondering what the real credible benefits to rooting it are? (and voiding warranty in the process)??
I don't see a lot of bloatware on the device, it's going to get constant updates from Google (as opposed to devices depandant on a carrier), I don't really need to overclock or mess with kernals on an already fast device.
Am I missing something here?

Some people prefer different launchers or ROMs or to have access to certain functions (e.g. full backup) that require root. I've had my N5 for a month and haven't felt the need for it, so I'm still stock, locked, unrooted.
Xposed for me.

I wouldn't call them minor tweaks at all. There is an extremely wide variety of things that require your phone to be rooted. Often times an app will have limited functionality without root.
Please note that rooting your phone has nothing to do with using a custom rom. (You can in fact have a custom rom that is not rooted) Your problems with your prior phone were not in any way as a result of rooting the phone. If you had problems with the rom (sometimes custom roms have broken components) that has nothing to do with having root access.
At this point, I'd be willing to bet the most common usage of the phone at this point (amongst users of this site) are those who are rooted, but still using the stock rom. More and more users are migrating to the custom roms, but this is because rom development takes a bit of time with major releases.
AdAway is the main reason for me - I HATE adverts with a passion!

what you consider "minor tweaks", might be a big deal for someone else. Tastes differ.
i root because of 1 main reason, i paid for the device and i believe i should be able to have full control over it.
Another thing is, whatever i do with my phone, i always know what i'm doing and why i'm doing it, so the odds of screwing something up are very little. In case i do need to claim warranty, i know how to set everything back.

It's up to you whether to root or not. Whatever problems you had with your previous device, it wasn't due to rooting persay, but rather what you did with root access. Rooting doesn't change anything, it just gives you administrative access to the operating system. Running un-rooted is analogous to accessing your desktop PC through a guest account. Rooting your Android device gives you full access like you have on your desktop as as an administrator.
He just wants to know the benefits. No need to harp on him for not wanting to root. If anything Nexus 5 has less reasons to be rooted then OEM phones.

Maybe someday he'll want to tether.
AT LEAST UNLOCK THE BOOTLOADER
Fastboot OEM Unlock
That easy, it'll erase EVERYTHING. So if you do it now you won't lose much. Do it later when you want to root (like my mother and myself) you'll have to unlock and lose everything.
If you ever need you return it just lock it again it's easy. And you won't lose ANYTHING for relocking it.

Mine is rooted mainly due to needing to use it for development work related to my job, but ad blocking and several xposed modules would require root anyways. That and I just can't help but mess with stuff like CPU frequency/voltage settings, etc.

I second this.
I was previously on Galaxy S2 rooted. I'd tested some custom roms like chamaleon, cm, but at last, what i realized that I needed wasn't a lot of new features i only wanted a good battery performance and a fc and random reboots free phone.
So I returned to stock roms with the more stock-like rooted kernel with Xposed and some additions. At last I got a good battery performance to keep the phone full day without charging.
Now that my N5 is with me for about 6 or 7 weeks I don't need rooting, modding ... nothing. The performance for my daily use is about 30 hours between charges with almost 3 hours with screen on.
That is all I need!
And for backups (i've payed for titanium backup app for my S2) now I use ADB from command line and it's enought for me
Also, the Nexus in this conditions hasn't hanged yet.
It spent more than 350 hours until I decided to change to Dart and I had to restart the phone. this is much better than my old S2 that needed two or three weekly reboots even with stock rom.
So, i'm very happy with my non-rooted N5 but if I need to root it in the near future it will be not a problem to me doing it.
I use it for Titanium Backup myself, whose backups I periodically have uploaded to Box.com. Obviously it's there for when I want to change phone and want to restore app data, especially for game saves, but you also never know if your phone is going to malfunction and you have to wipe or get lost/stolen. I think it's pretty useful to have an app that automatically takes care of backing up your data for you.

First ever non rooted phone

I've had android phones ever since my Samsung i5700 in 2009. Every single phone since then has been rooted, I've tried every ROM, Kernel, config out there in a bid to make it the best it can be.
I've used rooting for better GPS, no ads, better performance, better battery, better display, better sound.
Since I've had the OP6, I can see no reason to root it. GPS is great, block this, blocks ads, battery life is great (with Greenify, some debloating) bar launcher gets my pulldown menu, black player provides great audio (with good earphones)
It's sooo nice to update to an OTA without fiddling, it's great to actually use the phone, instead of constantly fiddling with it.
I never realised OnePlus made such awesome phones, and I've tried a lot!
Anyone else running stock due to the awesomeness?

How do you block ads without root? It is actually my only reason for doing it.
Use block this APK https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/block-this.en.aptoide.com/amp
See https://bestforandroid.com/adblocker-apps/
It's.open source, DNS based, very lightweight
I'm with you bro no root awesome as it is. @Christian1678 you don't need to root to block ads; Adguard, Adclear, Block This. just to name a few.
I'm an inveterate modder and can't help myself.
But I agree this is the best phone I've ever had and I've only bothered doing a few things. Not even running xposed (to preserve Google Pay) and not really missing it.
I need root at least for Titanium Backup (my reliable local backup with data included), SDMaid (for cleaning up old data from apps), Viper4Android (for amazing sound) and xposed for XprivacyLua (if apps are too snoopy). I will never use GPay so this is no problem for me.
But you are right with the system-updates: they are running very well and smooth.
I've had most Oneplus phones, including the one, X, 3T, etc,. All of the have been rooted day one.... except the 6.
With this phone I just feel reluctant to root. As the OP said, this is so good, it has most features I need, that I see no need to take the risk of rooting.
I used to root all Android phones I had. The main reason for doing so was to extend the life of the phone due to almost nonexistent software updates, but Oneplus is doing well on this regard as well.
Battery life is excellent. It is almost 3 pm here and I am at 80% with moderate use.
Stability is not an issue. I've rebooted the phone twice since I bought it and these due to the OTA updates received.
So, I might in the future ( if I keep it long ), but for the time being it is kept virgin.
Cheers
I agree with OP, I've rooted all of my previous phones but see no reason to do so with this phone. I actually really like not 'having to' constantly optimize every detail or rom settings and flashing and all that, and just enjoy the phone as it is.
Yep, i'm thinking the same with this. My OP6 arrived yesterday and so far the only things I can consider needing a root/unlock are:
Ad-Free YouTube (with a black background )
Nandroid Backup
My previous device (Moto X Style) suffered a severe brick problem and since the beginning of May Ive been using a spare iPhone 6 quite happily (Not fantastic but as a no fuss daily driver it was fine). I believe a good portion of my niggles with the previous phone were down to the constant tweaking/flashing, though LineageOS did make it a joy to use again once support for it dried up.
If there was a decent way of achieving the adfree Youtube without the need to unlock/root I would be happy. Though it is good to know OnePlus are doing a decent job of updating the OS.
Edit: Well the Youtube requirement I had is sorted! Youtube Vanced edition has a non-rooted version that does the job for me.
I'll see how long I can resist rooting, I traditionally root my devices within days of them arriving (back in the win mobile days of course we did the unlocked bootloader and superCID etc...!).
Same here , I always rooted all my phone's , except this and Nokia 8.
I see no point on rooting a near stock android phone. Its fast as it is.
Rooting Samsung is necessary tho , with that touchwiz is horrible.
I have always found bugs on roms. At least stock has been tested before release.
I am with you on this one. I however rooted because I needed titanium backup to work for 2 apps I had to restore backups from when I change devices but outside of that I really don't need root on this device. Battery life is awesome averaging 6 hrs SOT consistently which is insane as I'm used to maybe getting 3.5 hrs on previous devices. I haven't needed to do any tweaks anything either and it's nice not having to always be flashing roms just to get better performance or battery life. Like I love resurrection remix rom but I don't need it now especially with it killing some functionality (NFC etc).
The OP6 is awesome!
Sent from my ONEPLUS A6003 using Tapatalk
[QRCODE][/QRCODE]I root day one too.
Reasons are Titanium backup, sd maid, magisk modules (viper, xposed) and xposed (afwall, xprivacylua, edge pro, gravitybox). Can't live without these apps anymore.
I don't customize (themes, ...) or use any other mods (kernel, custom rom, battery tweaks, ...). Just stock rom, twrp, magisk, xposed. No problem at all to take ota-updates.
I feel the same. The first phone I don't need to root. Well, I had S7 Edge before and it wasn't rooted because I didn't want to lost warranty although I was desperate for root access. OP6 is so close to my ideal phone! The only thing is camera quality (waiting for Pexel cam app) and speaker placement.
Everytime I got a new phone the first thing I always did was unlocking and rooting right after unboxing.
But oneplus 6 is that one rare phone which I haven't unlocked and rooted. Its been 33 days.
Everything works so flawlessly that root not needed till now. However I will root it someday only for 2 reasons. Titanium backups and Viper4android.
Rest everything is perfectly fine so yeah this is my first non rooted phone.

Same, the most important reason why I still root my phones is basically just the Titanium backup (not all apps have backup options for their data). Well, also for Viper4Android and Adaway is nice too and Substratum, even tho rooting isn't necessary for it anymore, but it makes it easier I guess.

I received my OP6 and held off rooting because of the confusion over the dual partitions. I used the phone unrooted and it was great. I kept following the forums because I'm a rootaholic I've rooted everything I ever owned but was unsure about the OP6. After reading quite a bit I unlocked my Bootloader and rooted my phone I ran the stock rom rooted for a week which was great. My previous OP5 ran xXx NoLimits Rom and I loved it. I ended up Flashing xXx NoLimits 2.2 on my OP6 and am absolutely loving it, It's Stable, Smooth, and Fast has everything I love in a Custom Rom.
I share the same experience with OP. I don't feel the need for rooting the OP6. It is smooth since day 1 I've acquired this phone.
Btw, thanks to those who share ad blocking apps. They are worth checking.

Genuine Question: What is the benefit of rooting at this point?

First off, a disclaimer: I come from a long line of rooting android phones, from the Nexus of yore to Samsungs and the Axon 7, to now potentially rooting the OP7 Pro. I know what rooting does, I know I can change the ROM, and that will allow me to change the look etc etc. But is there really benefit outside of that anymore?
And what things will I lose by rooting? Will google pay still work? Etc.
I've been getting bored with the stock ROM, not because there's anything wrong with it, I actually have only a 55% urge to root and load up a custom ROM. It's mostly out of boredom to be honest. But I find that as phones progress, my need to root and flash a new ROM shrinks. Especially since this is relatively close to Stock Android in the first place.

As long as Magisk passed with Safety Net, Google Pay will still work. Other than Warranty, you lose nothing. Rooting just let you gain more control over your phone.

Adaway is my big plus to rooting. Doesn't matter what app or game I use, no ads.
Titanium Backup is my other #1 app to have. If I have problems with a specific OS (in my case, I had to downgrade from Android 10 back to 9), Titanium Backup put all my (game) data back without issues.

seconded. adaway is the main reason for me too. and Viper4Android
Im looking for a ROM that enables free tethering built in. Does anyone know of any? That's the main benefit of rooting for me.
I've been rooting and ROMing since the HTC Hero. I used to chase nightlies, kernels, new homescreen every day.... all looking to make slow phones faster and more useable.
Phone hardware is actually pretty stellar now, especially this one.
So all I do is root the stock rom, install ad block and Viper4android.
Being able to update firmware from the manufacturer OTA and maintain root with just a few clicks is the best thing since sliced bread for me.
Android manufacturers have finally started adding things to their stock launchers and builds that now make some mods and rooting and obsolete.
But Instill use it to customize my Waze map colors and Adaway. Otherwise, no reason and been thinking of jumping to the new Galaxy S11 plus when it comes out. Will see.
I root for Viper, to try custom kernels and to mod various visual aspects of OOS. You do lose HD quality Netflix and Prime video but I rarely watch them so its worth it for me.

Could you list the ones you use or would root to use, I'm also tempted to root but don't really see a big benefit, maybe you can change my mind

For me, I root for substratum, xposed edge, exi for SwiftKey, adaway, custom kernels, (magisk) roms, viper4android, probably a few more but that's just off the top of my head. Also, not the person you replied to.
Sent from my OnePlus7Pro using XDA Labs
You should root you don't loose anything
And i overclocked the phone like crazy fast,
There are many benefits for rooting
I'm not rooting this time cause I dont want to lose the stable system that I have. I like its last of battery and I am okay with the speed of the phone. I think I will pass rooting this time
Adaway, viper4android, google dailer with call screen, downclocking the cpu, getting rid of all unnecessary apps and background processes. Aux camera's in gcams. And i have gpay and banking apps still working....
