I know that my question has been answered in countless threads.... but what I'm hoping to do is get this information compiled into one thread (and if it exists already, please point me there).
What I'm wondering is who's stock, who's rooted, what ROM you're running and if you had any issues.
I'm really not looking for any fixes to problems in this thread, just a simple compilation to get percentages, because I like to play the numbers.
I'll even start:
Stock Inspire with official sideloading and custom APN for hotspot
Only a random occurance where screen rotation stops
Owned since April 22
I've run LeeDroid and Android Revolution so far. With both ROM's I've noticed nice improvements in overall responsiveness of the phone. However, both suffer slight lag from the application Slacker Radio (just in case you enjoy streaming music ) that builds up over time to the point where I have to reset my phone just to continue to use it.
With LeeDroid, I've noticed that my Pandora app doesn't give it lag, or such a small amount that I don't really notice/care about it.
I've run a lot of Radio's (With their RIL) so I won't go into that, but the only Kernel I've ever played with was the oen for LeeDroid. Dunno if it actually did anything.
LeeDroid also, of the two (three if you count stock) ROM's I've run has the best battery life by far. Can't really go into official numbers since I've been tweaking my phone non-stop for a week now working out a few signal/speed bugs, however I've noticed that I don't have to plug it into my external battery except once a day, even after tweaking and adjusting non-stop for 4-6 hours.
So yeah, that's my take on it. If you're willing to sit down and play with things to get it to work, I'd say go for it. If you want something quick and easy, then I'd suggest maybe holding off a bit and enjoying stock.
Well, I ran my phone bone stock for the first 3 weeks of owning it, then rooted without any issue using bubby's simple root method.
Waited another ~1.5 months before flashing the rom I'm using now, Inspired Ace.
The rom has been a flawless, near stock (sense) gingerbread experience. I often forget I even flashed anything, except for the little gingerbread differences, of course.
Seriously, my guess is that an offical gb release from HTC for this phone would look nearly identical to this rom.
Haven't done anything radio-wise aside from flashing the matching ril for the stock radio. I haven't even updated to the new OTA radio yet.

Nah. I've actually been getting the "itch."
There's so many roms to check out, and I'm running out of excuses not to try some.
I'm just still a little hazy on some of the pre-flashing procedures, mainly cwr related. Like differences between "wiping" and format /system, /data, etc.
I'm finding that trying too hard to avoid misery before it happens results in perpetual inaction, though.

I just got the Inspire last week (my first Android phone), and I can't help but tinker, so I've rooted and put a custom ROM on already. (LeeDroid and now CyanogenMod 7) I found these two video guides to be very helpful, as I wasn't familiar with a lot of the terminology people throw around.

Be warned, this took me a lot longer than I anticipated (a couple of hours total, but I was multi tasking. [multi tasking = watching Game of Thrones]).
I really like CM7, it feels faster than stock and my battery life seems better as well.

I ran Stock for about 2 days. No known Issues.
I then Rooted and Ran Bubby's one click and ran the rooted stock RUU for about 3 days. No Known issues.
I then flashed Ace Inspired. It was fantastic. I ran it for about 2 days. Only issue I had was screen would stick in rotation. It just wouldn't move. A Reboot fixed it. I made a back so I could easily return to it. I haven't.
I then flashed Leedriod. I have been running this rom since. Its amazing. I have seen no issues. I Also made a Backup of this rom so I could easily return to it. I have.
I then flashed Gingerbeast yesterday. Its fast and clean. But...Sirius Radio would randomly disconnect. Wireless would random disconnect. Bluetooth stuttered.
I returned to Leedriod this morning. Again, no issues.
When my inspire was stock everything seemed to work like it should. Except I had one huge problem, and its a problem that I have had with any phone from at&t, I had absolutely zero service here in southwest Wisconsin where I'm going to school.
I then decided to root in hopes that with a new radio I could get signal. I went with Leedroids Rom and kernel and couldn't be happier. Now I get full service edge! I didn't even have to mess with the radio.
I still can't believe that with those two changes I get great service. I'm comparing to 3 phones all on the same network, razr, blackjack 2, and Samsung flight 2. The inspire was the second to worst service here, now blows all of the other phones out of the water.

2. Backup SMS/MMS w/ SMS Backup+ and sync to your google acct.
3. Make sure your Contacts are Synced
4. Backup Apps w/ TiBu or the like
5. Boot to recovery/CWM from Rom Mgr(if your current rom doesn't have the advanced shut down menu.)
6. Go to Backup/Restore and backup your current config
7. Go to Format System/Factory reset and run that
8. Go to Advanced and select Wipe Dalvik Cache
9. Go to Install zip from sd card> choose zip from sd card
10. Flash anything else that you're wanting/needing w/ that particular rom(some require flashing gapps)
11. Reboot System and complete setup like a new phone
12. DL TiBu or the like and restore apps
13. I can't think of anything else.
Aosp Gingerbread. Fastest, best stock gingerbread rom ever. Never made it past rc1; only problem is Bluetooth doesn't work. Which doesn't bother me one bit.

I keep seeing people getting ripped for rooting business phones. I'm a self employed IT tech, and I use my phone for everything from remote access (RDP& TeamViewer) to mobile doc (Docs2Go) to social networking to business calls to gaming to kill time.
Would I be stupid to root this phone?

Thanks Tx, I appreciate that. I have yet to flash a rom the "regular" way, that is, other than rom manager, with the exception of rooting, but that was rather automated, so having these step-by-steps is extremely helpful.

Not necessarily. There was a recent thread where someone was having problems with sound quality on his phone, which he depended on heavily for work, but i suspected other factors involved with that.
I'll tell you right now, this here phone in my hands is work-ready. Rooted and flashed a stable non-stock rom.
If anything, maybe if you had a backup phone just as a CYA type of thing for the process and a "burn-in" period, in case you run into some speedbumps along the way.
I mean, if you plan on going off hard on the flashing thing, then just due to the shear number of rom changes, something is bound to get a little goofy on the software end, but not anything that isn't fixable, for the most part.
When you start getting careless with things like partitioning or radio flashing, then you could run into some serious problems.

A few points:
-it's very, very hard to brick your phone by rooting and flashing roms, so if you're stressing about that at all, don't. It only gets dicey is you are flashing radios via fastboot or messing with ENG-OFF. You don't need to do either of those things, and you won’t either accidentally.
-tinkering and trying many roms is very easy. If you do a nandroid backup (aka a backup with Clockworkmod recovery), you’re golden. It takes about 5 minutes to do a backup. If you want to come back to the previous rom, simply restore in Clockworkmod recovery. EVERYTHING will restore as it was before. After you do a backup, boot up and rename the backup file to something meaningful, like “Dilligaf5-20110534”. Make sure there are no spaces in the name, or Clockworkmod recovery will upchuck. The backup files are on your SD card in the \clockworkmod\backup directory. I have a collection of 10 backup roms. I can restore any one of them in 5 minutes with all my settings intact.
-if you are going from froyo to froyo or gb to gb, you can used Titanium backup to backup and restore sms/mms. Just backup “dialer storage”. When you get your new rom up, restore dialer storage. You will have to reboot after you restore in order to see your sms/mms messages.
-buy Setcpu and root explorer.
-checkout the rom kitchen. You can do lots of neat stuff like changing the battery meter, status bar, icons, fonts, animation, and boot animation. http://uot.dakra.lt/
-AOSP roms like CM7 and others are very fast and have good battery life, but some the apps are not as feature-rich. For example e-mail is missing a lot of options.
-GB roms (like LeeDroid and AR) are nice, but to me, GB doesn’t really have that much to offer over Froyo. LeeDroid has a great kernel and battery life. It also has a really nice call recorder. From a UI perspective
-My favorite rom is Dilligaf 2.0. You should give it a try.

I knew it was really a matter of "when" not "if" (My iPhone was JB when I bought it.... A guy wanted it unlocked, so I JB it for him and then saw that it was 3.1.3 before they had released the exploit for that baseband, so I bought it _CHEAP_)

Any reviewsa on MIUI? I like Sense, but mostly just b/c I think that HTC's clock widget is >*, and I see that MIUI's widget is very similar.
You could just buy beautiful widgets and use it on whatever rom you prefer.

I rooted and tried several ROMs. RCMixHD and TB Fusion were both nice, but the keyboard seemed to lag and freexe a good bit on those. Inspired Ace is the ROM I am currently on. I used the battery calibration technique used here to maximize my battery usage. For the battery history section of that thread be sure to grab this app, as the method listed there is not coded into GB ROMs. I have flashed ROMs once or twice and they have not booted, but a simple battery pull and boot to clockworkmod recovery (turn on with power and volume down buttons pressed at the same time then scroll to recovery) to wipe and reflash worked fine.
Well, I now officially have no warranty
Waiting for my SD contents to copy back over, and I think I'll start with Inspired Ace.
I welcome recommendations, but for now I think I'll stick with Sense ROMs.
Im fairly new to the phone mod game and im the only one of my friends who gives a damn. Needless to say that means ive no one to talk to about this stuff. I recently rooted my Inspire (aahk) works great. Now my phone is insane with speeds like ive never seen. However i was flashing some roms around trying to find the one just right for me, and thought id try CM7 did a full wipe. Being the impulsive person i am i only backed up on my SD and when it told me to do a partition i didnt consider the consequences..... So now im stuck with CM7 (not for me) and i guess ive got to start all over. In trying to download new ROMS it seems that only the ones n the premium section will really change the whole phone. Is there a way i can get back to the ROM it had me on just after rooting? Or am i starting all over? would it be wise to unroot and start over? i really dont like the ADW base of CM7. I had been running HoneySense which was awesome but could barely use my data other than the Market..... Yes i know im long winded but like i stated. Ive got no friends that give a damn about their phones. ANY hints tips advice would be appreciated. And to all of you developers, keep up the good work, i envy your skills.... 2 years ago i could barely check an email, and have been learning as much as possible as quick as possible. Also what is the difference with the nandroid and clockworkmod? can i use apps for both or are they root specific... You can laugh if you like
Your nandroid/cwm backups will backup your entire rom. Forget restoring those if you want to go to a different rom. You need to be rooted if you want to perform these actions, but you already are rooted. If you want to backup your apps then use Titanium backup or My backup root to backup just your apps. Don't backup system stuff. You can flash any of the roms in the development section. You do not need to root again. Always wipe before flashing a new rom. In recovery you select wipe and choose to wipe cache, dalvik cache, data/factory reset, and you can also format system if you want. Don't wipe anything else. Backup your data that you want to save before wiping.

Some of the biggest ?s that is asked a lot when it comes to roms is stability,battery life.And whats the "best" and there is really no "best" one. But for I would recommend NinjaRom. I have been running that for @ least 5months and only had minor issue which was fixed from the support team. Also tried android rev,CoreDroid all good stuff.
But when you do flash its a good idea to do a back up. Which I go through ClockWorkMod (CWM) and select back up and I aslo save each back to my sd card and save it the pc to a folder that I created for my Roms/Tweaks/Add-Ons/etc..

Overall i want to speed up my system (which the "set cpu" app and all overclocking apps confuse me) I have tried all different kinds of settings and the only way i can get a decent result is through wifi. Also batterylife and the more i learn about phones the more i like so the deeper i dive the more intriuged i become... I always want more faster and better.As far as ROMS anything based or similar to CM7 i do not like, before i eber rooted i tried the ADW launcher and am not a fan of the set up. I love the sense roms, but the only ones i can find through cwm are HoneySense which only lets me access my data through the market (no browser, no email, no google, no FB) i installed Leedroid last night and its ok but the specs of Honey Wonder look awesome. I cant find it on cwm and i cant seem to gert it from my computer to my phone. Im about to try and put my SD into the cpu and do it that way. When i backup my Apps should i backup my data for them as well? ANd then can i restore them over any rom? or do i go back and restore them from the market, can i save my home screens to restore the way i like them or do i have to do it manually any time? Im sorry if im overloading with questons but as i stated previously none of my friends give a damn about any of this stuff, except one and he kniows about a quarter of what i know. Hes wanting to root his LG OPtimus C but i told him to wait till i learn more about it, also i dont know if there is a root for it. wow that was a mouthful, you should be able to download from xda but if your having trouble try-menu-browser also your not limited to only inspire roms the DHD is almost the same phone and is global and non-branded (INSPIRE 4G-AT&T) so check out some of these.

Ok.... Where to start... You can back up your apps with data. I restore those because for like any programs such as browsers or any games I want to restore the settings and bookmarks, passwords, etc. Before I restore in a new rom I go through the checked programs that are supposed to be restored, Apps with data in Titanium Backup Pro, and make sure I am only restoring "my" apps. I have often found that TB likes to also backup HTC Sense, etc. I do not want to restore any system apps since this would more than likely cause a problem with the new rom.
As far as overclocking is concerned, a lot of the newer versions of roms do not use SetCPU anymore. They use the Virtuous overclocking daemon script. This works much faster than SetCPU. Using SetCPU with these roms will disable the daemon. the information on the kernel and the overclocking daemon is usually listed in the first post of the rom thread. You can install Sybergunne's Daemon Controller app if it is not already installed to easily change the settings. Overclock carefully. Every phone is different and not all can go as high as others. Some may run stable at 1.6 GHz and others are only stable at 1.1 GHz.
If you are looking for faster data speeds, then that is already cooked into the roms by the developers, although there may always be some tweaking that can be performed. Speed for data is very subjective, because it really depends on your particular area. Radio's and RIL's make a difference also, but what works for me in my area may not work well for you. It is really a trial and error procedure to find out what works for you.
You are looking for sense roms, so Sense 3.0 and 3.5 are the latest for our phones. Go through the Inspire and Desire HD development threads and read the rom descriptions to see what you like. Almost every DHD rom is made to also work with the Inspire. Links to both sections are posted below. Some rom ideas for you to look at are, Android Revolution HD, Rumrunner, Bindroid, RCMix roms, HoneyWonder roms, Cleardroid, Virtuous Unity, etc., etc. You need to decide which ones you want to try. Ok, that is my mouthful.

The rom comes with kernel but aosp kernels go with aosp (android open source project)=cm7 and sence kernels usually with all sence roms
People sometimes flash alternate kernels than what comes with the rom to experiment and see what the performance behavior is like. ALWAYS make a CWM/Nandroid backup of your rom before you flash any mods or kernels. Usually it does not happen, but sometimes a flashed mod or kernel can mess up your phone so it is good to have a backup in case of problems.
So I've got a 16gig SD and I've had to strip it down because it had 14 gigs of music on it. So after I rooted I took a bunch off. Would it be wise to keep 2 SXS? One I can jam too and another for downloading Rome and flashing? Also I CAN flash CM7 kernels to my Sense roms. Has anyone tried that Beatmod BlissSense. It seems cool but it doesn't seem to want to download. You guys are awesome and have helped me it tremendously. I may not be able to help with your computer problems or anything but if you need any advice on home repair or anything like that Im your guy.

Beatmod BlissSense was awesome. Had some minor bugs for me, GPS signal was a littly nutty and my calls kept dropping. (I reflashed the rom when I found this was happening and the issue seemed to disappear). All in all, it was a great rom but since I'm new to the root thing, the flashing bug caught me and off I went into the xda forums..I'm currently running Android Revolution and of all the roms I've flashed, this is by far my favorite.
What exactly is "freezing" an app mean? I've got an idea I just want to make sure I'm right? Is it wise to delete bloatware apps? Would they come back if I needed to unroot?
Freezing an app is a little like deleting it, but safer. If you delete it, you may find out you have big problems because the system app will not reinstall correctly and you end up reinstalling the rom. With freezing you can take it out but restore it exactly the way it was in the system if things go wrong. If you are backing up your rom like you should in case of problems, then that backup usually takes over a gigabyte of space on your sd card, so it sounds like you definitely need to have another card with more space. You have to be careful what kernel you want to try. If it was written for CM7 it may not work with Sense based roms. Depends how it was coded. You have to research information on the kernel to see if it lists anything specific about proprietary installation. If not, then go ahead and try it. BACKUP YOUR ROM FIRST BEFORE FLASHING.

I have flashed lots of roms this honey wonder will be like my 9th lol but it all depends on you and the flashing it will take time to see what you like. As to speeding up your phone like set cpu @ the time I found useful cause you were able to set profiles for phone like when its sleep mode set it for like low power. And when your using it have a higher mhz etc.. But I did use juice defender as an app which to me it worked very good.
But to me I like Roms that do not take up memory lol

I mean CWM and all of that should be not only on my phones memory but also in most roms correct? You guys have been a huge help! Im loving this honeywonder but want to play around soe more. Ia having a problem with it though sometimes when i try to reboot or anything that should take me to boot it simply will not do it. Ive installed the Inspirefix.zip but am still havingm some issues. And the phone is saying 3G ATT is that just what its saying and im still 4G or has the ROM taken me back to 3??? Just wondering Because its still hella fast im about to trey a readio and ril flash to try and get some more speed. Hopr i dont screw anyhting up

I flashed honey with out the inspire fix if you did I would plug your phone back in go to you sd card and delete it out and reflash.
If you have not made a back up in cwm then do so and it will located in your sd card in the folder clock work and then a sub folder called back ups. I myself save that back on my pc just to have.
The 3g icon I had that and its ok.

I've had a droid eris back in the day and that practically required a custom Rom in order to run well...with the s3 which has better stats than some of the computers I work with...what IS the advantage of rooting or using a custom Rom? We can install apks from unknown sources without root(sadly my nook tablet had to be rooted to do that)...we can disable most if not all the bloatware without root...we have plenty of on board storage so no absolute need to delete even the bloatware....just curious as to why you do root? Is it just the "geek"thing to do? Is the battery life that much better? Can't see it being much faster...I do however appreciate all the work people are doing developing for this device as I believe it will extend its life...so without further ado give me your reasons why you root/custom Rom....specifically this device?

I root to use ad free, titanium backup, some of the extra features in tasker and occasionally Wi-Fi tether. Roms also bring features that were left out such as a brightness slider in the notifications, jelly bean animations and further optimizations are usually included. Plus there are those countless mods and themes that take care of your minor annoyances, and set your color/icon preferences just right.
Overall it makes a great phone even better

First of all this should be In q&a but besides that customs roms from this phone will 1. Get you better battery life 2. Give you features that are desired from other phones 3. Give more customization options to the user 4. Well I mean better performance but its already blazing fast so its not too noticeable

That picture is the main reason I root. Granted that is mostly standby but it is still amazing. I also like to use AdFree Android to get rid of any ads that may come up on my device. With this phone you mentioned it can't get much smoother and I agree. I am currently running a custom kernel with the Synergy ROM and I have my phone underclocked to 1.1GHz and it feels like it is still on stock because of what Synergy did to make the phone faster. Saves on battery A LOT in my opinion. If you are on the fence about rooting and ROMing I say go for it. The worst that will happen is you don't see the need and you Odin back to stock which will take you about 10 minutes. :laugh:

The rooting process for this phone is pain free and only takes a couple of minutes. At the very least, I would say root it and play around with some of the mods. I went about a week after I got my phone going stock/rooted and it was great, but Bean's Rom and Synergy are both fantastic.
And fwiw, kexec doesn't lock out a core.
Originally, my sole reason for rooting was to get rid of that annoying Verizon wifi notification/add back the wifi toggle.
In the process, I discovered SynergyROM, which seems promising. It has lots of customization options, including being able to choose which toggle you have. Not to mention, it also boosts you data/wifi speeds and gives phenomenal battery life.
Honestly, if I were on AT&T or some other network that didn't have the BS wifi notification, I wouldn't even have bothered rooting until my second year into the device, like I did with my Droid Eris.

Are you referring to the work around root? And if so, will the work around yield the same results as having actually rooted the phone? I'm asking this cause I was under the impression Verizon still has the boot loader locked.

The Bootloader is still locked but you don't need it unlocked to root. There are workarounds (Kexec) for flashing roms.

You can flash Custom ROMs without kexec. You need to use kexec to flash custom kernels. Assuming you consider ROMs like synergy custom and don't only consider AOSP ROMs custom.

Yeah I know I just didn't want someone thinking they had to understand kexec to flash a TW rom with the stock kernel.

To get rid of the 'ongoing' wifi notification and put back the wifi toggle back in there too. That was my sole reason and have actually been okay with touchwiz so far.
I rooted to get root explorer
I would have left it alone but cut and paste self-corrupted and I needed root explorer to fix this
Since I was rooted anyway, I decided to install a rom to eliminate the wi fi notification too

I had my S3 all of a day before I got the root itch. And that was after having an original moto droid rooted for over 2+ years.
I just like knowing I have the extra control if I need it.

My BIGGEST reason for rooting is because of updates. Anyone notice how the phones from the manufacturers just keep coming out back to back? I am tired of the fact that i can go buy a new just released phone, and before the first year is out, it seems the manufacturer quits updating the software. for example, if ICS came with the phone, unless it is the flagship phone, majority of the phones will not see a JB version. Even if the phone has not even been out for a year ( still under the 1 year warranty). this to me is BS, i think that they should be required to update all the software (assuming the HW can handle it) at least during the warranty period. they seem to just want you to buy a new phone to get the software. Rooting usually allows me to have access to the tools to update the phone myself through another Rom. I also like to have choices.

That doesn't "get rid of" the wifi notification it disables it. It's still there, regardless of whether wifi is turned on or off, but now it just does nothing when you press on it. Personally, if it's going to be there either way, I'd rather it actually do something.
Getting to the original question:
Although I haven't rooted yet (I like to ride out my warranty first), here are the top reasons why I would do it:
- AdAway
- Titanium Backup
- Fully Functional Nova Launcher (read: widgets in drawer)
- ROMs & Mods
On my old Incredible, it was more for AdAway, Titianium, and other root-needing apps. Only later once ICS came out did I really dive into new ROMS.
This phone on the other hand, needs a new ROM right away! There are just too many things that piss me off about TouchWiz.
Things like:
- No Screenshot in Power Menu
- Toggles in notification pane not configurable
- Ongoing Wifi Notification instead of a Toggle
- No brightness slider in notification pane
- Manual arrangement of icons in a folder doesn't stick for more than a week
- App drawer icon isn't centered
- "Audio Applications" menu that shows up in notification pane when headphone are connected can't be configured to show apps I actually use
- No audio controls on lockscreen (standard lockscreen)
- Audio doesn't pause automatically when I unplug my headphones
- Audio sometimes starts up randomly when I plug in my headphones
- Audio volume steps down to ~85% when plugging in headphones
- Headphones/Speakers have separate volumes
And those are just the things that come to mind immediately.
I just took a gamble and canceled my Verizon account and switched to AT&T just to get the Nexus 5. I must say I do not miss the S4 one bit. Google made it so easy to root and unlock the bootloader. The phone is incredibly fast! I like how its simple to use. An example is the camera. You open it and shoot pictures. Samsung camera had so many different features that just wanted needed and probably bogged down the phone.
Now that I have my phone setup I just wanted to see if theres anything you guys recommend. I am rooted with the bootloader unlocked but I kept the stock rom. With the stock rom I got Gravity box to let me customize the rom to my liking. I also got greenify(donate version).
Is there anything in particular you guys recommend?
Heres a list of apps Im using.

There's nothing wrong with flashing a ROM. Makes the phone far more customizable and in most cases, improves performance. If you don't like it just revert back.
A root app I would recommend is 'Greenify'. Some people believe it is useless, however on my old single core phone, it was quite dramatic. So you might as well use it.

Yea i got the donate version of that. Mainly because one night i charged phone to 100% and unplugged it. In the morning it was at 75% I was shocked. I put greenify on there and did the same thing. What a difference. Work up with 97% battery.
Congrats I did the same but went with tmo about 9 months ago. So happy!
Check out xposed and the module gravity box. It's all I run. It's all you need to run (imo).... Root required but I use stock Google rom with stock kernel. No need for custom kernels or roms (imo)
Fwiw I don't use anything else. No need to greenify anything (again imo)

I purchase the phone for a relative. Since he is on AT&T network, I figure I had to prep the phone. So far I have done the following:
1. Simm unlocked the phone. Tested using a Lycamobile pay as you go, which worked immediately after unlocking.
2. Update ROM to jelly bean. Benchmark indicated that it is faster.
However, the phone has a lot of Tmobile related stuff on it. For example
* I keep getting a popup saying that wifi calling isn't working. I believe this is a tmobile feature. I turned it off but it keeps notifying me that it's not turned on.
* There appears to be a list of stuff that may not be working:
Mobile Hotspot
Mobile Widget
Tmobile My account
Tmobile Name ID
Tmobile TV
If I get root, can they be deleted? If they are deleted, will this cause crashes? How do we get them back if say the person switches to Tmobile?
I also had some difficulty with the interface. Touchwiz is apparently different enough from stock to make things difficult. Hopefully, it won't be confusing to the user.

Above stated apps can be easily deleted without any consequences. I've made it also.
Deletion can be done through cmd or via uninstaller-apps (Titanium e.g.). Root required.
However you cannot revert to them again after deletion therefore it makes sense to backup them if you want.
WiFi-Calling can be switched off through Settings->More settings->WiFi-Calling->Disabled.
No notifications, no popups at all.
Being your relative is on att then you will find it best to root the phone and get rid of any T-Mobile garbage, better yet just use one of the many amazing custom ROMs here which are far better/faster/more stable than stock and won't come with any T-Mobile apps

Well, he's not the custom rom sort of guy. He probably want stock everything. This is the first time I used Touchwiz, and I have to say that I am not a fan. When you install an app, it's not sorted in any reasonable order and it took me a while to figure out how to hide the keyboard.
What's the best way to backup the phone?

Backup in recovery, then try some custom ROMs out. Even if he isn't a custom ROM sorta guy he will be better with one, besides most are closer to stock android than any touchwiz ROM anyway.
But of course choice is between you and him

I would root the phone and install a custom recovery, then you can back up the stock ROM. You will have to be rooted to delete system apps, anyway. If you decide to stay with the stock ROM, you can use an app (l use App Master in the Play Store) to delete all the proprietary garbage you don't want. This app let's you create a little recovery file of the deleted apps, if you want to put them back some day. Just clearing away the stuff you don't need will help but I would still go with a custom ROM, especially since you're going to all the trouble already.
It appears that you can just disable the app through the app manager. I disable to tmobile app that way so that the effect is not permanent.

Please remember that the Relay has been abandoned by the manufacturer. Unpatched and outdated OS software is risky on any computer--including a mobile device. For your friend's safety and privacy, you really should consider abandoning the out of date "stock" operating system (that will never be patched).
There is an official release of CyanogenMod available that can automatically update. Any owner of a Relay would be a fool to stick with the stock Jelly Bean Touchwiz.
Just my two cents.
FYI to whoever needs this, I recently started using my Relay on ATT and it works great. 4G is faster than tmobile's. And i'm on a custom ROM.
