I just bought a new Nexus 5. I love all the extra features custom ROMs come with, and I bought this phone because it has the best ROMs
How good are the various custom ROMs in terms of stability and battery life at present? Should I switch to a ROM rightaway or is it better to wait for better/more stable builds (the ROMs I'm considering are still in beta)?
Imho the best rom is purity for n5, stable and rock solid. For kernels there are a lot but i personally use faux

Hello,
Please read the stickies before creating a new topic. ROM Comparison threads are not allowed here. You can head over to the development section and try the various AWESOME roms which have been developed and settle on the one which suits you the best!
I would reccomend you to stay stock for at least a few weeks so that you feel the stock experience for a while and then jump on to a custom rom as you will now have something to compare the custom rom with and the awesome feeling when you jump from stock to custom!
Almost all the custom roms which are there in the development section are stable enough to be used as a daily driver...
Just a friendly reminder that this thread is about the stability about custom ROMs, not which ROM's the best/better than...
Discussions about stability are ok, but please don't slide into "best ROM" discussions, or else I have to close this thread
Stock works very well. I would recommend you unlock the bootloader right away, then run stock for awhile. Rooted stock with xposed+ gravity box will get you just about anything a custom Rom will have.

The phone is already unlocked/rooted/running CWM. That's the first thing I did when I unboxed it. And I'm already looking into the xposed modules that would fit my requirements.

When you say "stable enough", does that mean there are still some minor issues I might encounter? Also, how would the battery life be compared to stock?

Yes there are... I'm on AICP and I get SODs once every 2-3 days... Because of the various CM patches and other stuffs, it sometimes breaks Tethering (although it is fixed by the dev the very next day)... Some other patch broke the lockscreen wallpaper on other rom...
I hope you know what I'm trying to say... These are just minor issues which occur when you flash custom roms and are ironed out by the dev within days... but they seem negligible when you get the awesome experience in using a custom rom...
What seems stable to one person may not to the next. And vice versa. We all use our phones different ways for different things. The only real way to know is read through the rom threads, starting from the last page and going backwards for latest comments and/or flash them and find out for yourself.
Thanks to nandroid backups and restores....going back to our good setup is easy if you don't like something.

I would stay stock for now and test out all of the custom kernels and see which has the greatest impact on impoving your current battery life. As said before in other threads what works for one Nexus 5 may not be the same on another one. As for the rom I prefer using stock+xposed. The modules I use are: gravitybox, xHaloFloatingWindow (with Floatifications from the play store) and greenify.
The custom dishes by our chefs are all great! Those who have to ask should stay stock for a while!
Stay stock . There has been no need for custom roms for a while. Kk is great. Kernels are another matter. I'd concentrate on finding a good kernel. All the features you want on a rom can be got with Xposed framework and modules, ie gravity box
Sent by mobile telephone.
The N5 has been out for a while, alot of awesome dev's has made roms. At this point, a custom rom is a must for the N5!
I would recommend PA for a stock experience or PAC for a all in one rom.
Thank you for the suggestions everyone.
I've had this phone for just a couple of days, so I won't rush into a custom ROM. Gravitybox and other xposed modules have most of the features and customisations I wanted, so I'll stick to stock for a while, and explore stock KK thoroughly. I might try out a few custom kernels though.
Hi,
My brother has some issues with his phone (Moto G 2013, not dual SIM, not 4G) in the last time. The phone is quite unstable, so I recommended him to flash custom recovery, and eventually custom ROM.
The question is which one? This is not ROM vs ROM thread. I do not wont to compare ROMs. Just aks people for they personal experience. If anyone could recommend a stable (his/her personal opinion.) ROM, or comment lolipop, should I got for Kit Kat ROM or Loli (He still hasn't received the OTA update to Lolipop.).
I have tried to research a bit and find out for my self what would be the best option for him, but the task is not so simple, and pretty time consuming. Strange how everything, from rooting to flashing seem so complicated when one looks at the forum, when one actually only has to unlock the bootloader, fastboot flash recovery, and flash the ROM of personal choice (Here I need a bit help : )).
I hope the question is ok, if not... sorry in advance.

I really didn't expect to find so many xposed modules in so good shape so fast! And you mean they all work, even gravity box!
Regarding stability, I have found many people complain even about official OTA updates. My brother also has serious stability issues with offices stock original, not rooted ROM on his Moto G, so stock doesn't always has to mean stability. People often root and start using custom ROMs because issues with stock.
But that's another story ☺. Thank you very much for your recommendation and very useful input. You have saved me a lot of hours of reading mostly useless stuff. I will definitely make make him flash what you recommended ☺. He was a bit afraid first when he found our he is losing his warranty when he applies for a device number, for unlocking the bootloader, but I remind him that his warranty is anyway not valid any more, and now we are about to proceed with unlocking, flashing TWRP, and this Lolipop ROM you recommended.

hahahaha, I've been flashing Roms and kernels to see which would suit me best, and I found this amazing stock ROM with amazing battery life.
Cheers
If you want half-bleeding edge ROMs than Dirty Unicorns is quite good with a big load a custom tweaks HOWEVER, I found resource management (RAM mostly) on Dirty Unicorns was . . . less than satisfactory and battery life was average-not great. If you want an up-to-date and almost-as-many-tweaks-as-dirty-unicorns then Exodus is the way to go Rock solid, fluid and quite compatible with custom kernels.
Oh, and about kernels. I cannot recommend ZERO Byte kernel enough. Great battery life, even with slight overclock (meaning better performance) and supports underclock (battery save 2 extreme!)
If him want a stock like and rock stable try AOSP+OMS.
I've used many ROMs on my nexus 5 but always had troubles fighting with the battery, (ofc used battery stats properly), fighting bugs (ive tried many betas also..)
and backing up and reinstalling.. you know the stories..
but soon I won't have my PC and I should choose 1 stable ROM and kernel that works together properly... I know its FAQ but it changes everyday, and i would like to hear your recommendations:
the only special feature I use: Call recording (doesn't work on stock)
-Battery stable
-least amount of bugs (stable rom)
Would love to get your offers for stable ROM and Kernel that worked for you.
I will also get STOCK for an answer, tho im using it now and having troubles updating properly without PC have some minor bugs and shutdowns and not completely stable.
and how to FULL BACKUP nexus properly?
thanks in advance

1. My favourites: stock 4.4.4 with Xposed, stock 5.0.2 with Xposed and now Cataclysm 5.1.
2. Battery life doesn't depend on kernel, but on your habits and your battery hog apps.
3. I recommend full nandroid backup in TWRP.
4. There isn't such thing like thanks in advance. It is a nonsence. You can't be thankful for something you even didn't get yet. If you are realy thankful for something, say it after, will sound much more honest.
With MM based ROMs coming out with enough time for people to get used to them, along with LP and KK based ROMs that have been around for awhile, what are people's favorite S5 ROMs?
Which ones offered the most robust features?
The most stable with limited issues (HD calling, modem issues, wifi calling, accessing data and wifi)?
The best usability and customization?
The most attractive?
The best battery life?
For people coming from a stock android experience (Nexus, Moto, AOSP ROMs), which ROMs let you go back to that? I personally find TW to look atrocious (just a personal opinion) but there are very few TW ROMs that keep the framework intact, but that also let you have the stock experience.
i personally really like FreedomROM by DROIDRAZ because it allowed you to have the stock nexus system ui
You will need a CID 15 to run this - but I've tried tons of ROMs, and I always come back to Vanir. It's fast, very stable, and looks nice (it comes with the CM engine as well).
Battery life is also excellent :good:

I ended up going with Phoenix for my first one. Being able to use themes is helpful, because I can use a Material based one. But it's very bloated and has a few features that are pointless on the S5, and I'm spending nearly as much time debloating as I would on a Stock ROM.
Vanir does look really nice. I'm kind of worried about issues on not being on a TW ROM though. The is my first time using recoveries and Custom ROMs (Haven't bricked too bad yet), and not sure I'd be able to troubleshoot issues.

Great ROM, I wish he would update it!
I'd love to hear more suggestions on this topic -- I'm running OptimalROM 13.1 and really want to upgrade, but I was waiting for Verizon's stock MM to ship and custom variants of it to appear. I haven't had time to follow all the current ROMs, their pros/cons, and the ins/outs of installing them, particularly with KNOX etc.
I have the same list of considerations as MortimerR in his original post -- I'd like something that keeps all the good features of the stock Samsung/Verizon MM, while removing all the bloat/crap, and adding some cool tweaks and advanced options.

A lot of the VZW roms out now are being updated or have been updated to MM.
Give Phoenix a try.
I've found that coming from Moto and Nexus devices, TW is just not for me. But for people who are used to it, I think Phoenix is fully featured.

Most CM based ROMs for this device have issues. Hell, most CM based ROMs for any device have issues. For the record, I don't agree with him either, I'm using the NO_BS 5.0 ROM and it's only slightly better than stock...
You could try cyanide for android ROM mm cm13 based ROM for kltevzw
it is an engineer build and crazy super kernel works well on it with kernel auditor mod apk to control kernel
I know these threads are frowned upon bc everyone has their own preferences but I'm just curious what roms y'all are running. What is the smoothest ROM right now. I live bring to customize with fonts and colors in the status bar and what not.
I'm on Resurrection but just wanting to change it up. I wish dirty unicorns was on here I used to flash that back in the day and loved it!!!

is it possible to have custom kernels with unrooted device and stock os? also, what custom kernle are you using if it's not a secret?
I've been on Havoc and then Omni Treskmod but both had certain issues (battery life / banking apps / default camera not working etc.) so I'm really thinking of reverting back to stock and unrooting the device. But I also enjoy some of the custom kernel features that are available out there so was wondering if it's possible to get best of both worlds

I dont believe that is possible. I use Elementalx and have no issues like that. Banking app is probably just because of root.

It definitely is because of root but I was unsuccessful in trying to hide root with Magisk... So seems like the only way to go is to revert back to stock without root...

Seems like it. Although, when my banking app had tap to pay built in, I was able to hide root and use it. Now I'm forced to use google pay and I can't get it to work while rooted.

My favorite has always been elementalx. It's great on every device I've had.
What about resurrection vs crdroid? I Ave been reading on both and both seems stable and good.
I've tried multiple custom roms but keeping coming back to stock, every rom seems to have some kind of functionality missing that the stock rom has, it's not worth it to lose base functionality just to have something different looking.

Yes, you can use alot of custom kernels unrooted. I have used Weeb and blu_spark unrooted without any problems and with Safety Net passing. If they are designed to work out of the box without any configuration with root apps and have CTS check bypass (kernel level) it should work without a problem like stock/unrooted, little research might be needed tho. Good luck.

Thanks for your input. I have actually unrooted my device and with a little bit of debloating I am getting the best battery life I have ever had (compared to quite a few custom roms & kernels I have tried out) + I was also able to get GCam with aux lenses, Youtube Vanced and get all the customization I need using Nova Prime Launcher. Really don't see myself coming back to any custom rom, as they tend to have bugs here and there, or have something that simply doesn't work the way it should. Stock everything gives me everything I need from this phone :good:
