Is there anyway around the global pin lock on the Gear? It's much easier to use my phone for Samsung Pay than to unlock my Gear everytime I want use my watch. Why can't Samsung implement an app lock for Samsung Pay Beta only?
Randon locking
It says that it should only lock when taken off of your wrist. Mine seems to randomly lock as well. I would love to find the reason for this because when a message comes through, I can not read it without unlocking at that point. Does yours lock randomly as well or each and every time?
Most times it locks, but sometimes it doesn't. I wish they just had an app lock.
Anytime it comes unpaired from your phone, it will lock. So if you leave your phone somewhere and walk out of range it will lock the watch. Also noticed that if the watch has a hard time reading your heart rate or is motionless for a while it will also lock. All of these seem like security measures. I'm pretty active and once I unlock it after taking it off the charger, it usually won't lock again.

Thanks, that explains it. I think I'm going to uninstall it, as I walk away from my phone frequently. If there was MST support it would probably be worth the hassle.
Anyone else have to continuously rescan their fingers every day just to get working fingerprint scanner?
It's getting ridiculous.
I have each of my index fingers scanned 3 times ince the last update!

I've not had this problem. It's been very reliable for me.

Try using more pressure when you register fingers. May help.
I'm thinking you just need to scan in more orientation?
For example, LG asked you to scan one side of your fingertip, then the other, then another, etcm OnePlus it doesn't seem to matter where you scan the graphic always fills in the same way.
I don't know. This tiny half sized fingerprint scanner is getting on my nerves. Otherwise the phone is nearly perfect. Except for Fingerprint & YouTube defaulting to 480p on every video.

But I think I scanned the prints better. I guess we'll see if they last for 24hrs.

I had the same issue on my OnePlus 3 and it is a very simple fix. Go back into where you register a fingerprint and register your fingerprint one or two more times and the problem will be solved.
Press on the sensor from all angles trying to cover each possible part of to your fingerprint even the tips when registering

I face this same issue as well. Re-added both fingers multiple times to cover more of the 'print', but it still doesn't always recognize them. Although it seems to work a little better when you press less hard on the scanner when you try to unlock the phone.

I registered the same finger twice by ignoring the messages that pop up. The accuracy now is close to flawless.
The error is because it already has that part of the fingerprint stored in the original fingerprint record. The reason you got it to ignore your 2nd attempt to register the same print is because it's picking up the part of that fingerprint that wasn't recorded on the first attempt. By doing this you are certain there isn't a spot that registers a print that got missed making your scanner much much more consistent.
I just switched from Pixel XL to OP 6. The fingerprint sensor is a lot faster but slightly less accurate than on the Pixel - sometimes you don't register a fingerprint if you position a finger way off.
Having said that, I have used the phone for about 1 day now, and I have learned the fingerprint sensor position. Now it works perfectly for me 100% of the time (using with an original OP silicone case.)
If you are having problems, your hardware may be defective. Replace the phone.

It won't let me even trying to ignore messages.
Edit: Figured it out. I understand now.
The trick is to scan different parts of the same finger.
On fingerprint 1, I scanned the top part of my index finger.
On fingerprint 2, I scanned towards the bottom section.
Ignore the messages that come up when scanning fingerprint 2 and just persist with registering.
Hello,
I’m using the Xperia 5 since this Wednesday (for two days).
My overall experience with phone is mostly good (for most parts of using even perfect). Unfortunately, these nice words do not apply for the fingerprint sensor.
It usually takes 2-5 tries to unlock the phone, sometimes I can’t even open the phone with the fingerprint scanner at all. (The error messages are: Not recognized; could not process fingerprint, please try again. Sometimes it says something with "partial fingerprint").
I tried rebooting recalibrating the fingerprint with the wizard then rebooting again. Nothing seems to help. I know this doesn’t have to be eventually a defect or something. Fyi, my thumb is not moist or oily, same thing applies for the reader. Maybe my thumb is just too wide, I don’t know.
What’s your overall experience?
Jakub
Same experience. Worst fingerprint reader I've used.
Same here, IMHO the worst fingerprint sensor I've ever used on a device.

I got it working but putting my finger along the side of it and not by using the thumb having the finger pointing out from the phone.
Mine works almost every time now.
But it is indeed not the best scanner.

So, you didn't use Z5 series. That was the worst fingerprint sensor. Fingerprint sensor didn't work more than it worked. This one on 5 is better but not good. Sometimes it doesn't work at all.
I have the same issue as well, as do many others evident from Sony Forums however the FPS works fine Banking apps, website logins etc

I didn't use a Sony phone with fingerprint sensor before
I am kinda used to finger print sensor being 99,99% accurate and reliable (iPad, Meizu, Nokia, LG, Samsung, Asus, Xiaomi etc.) so that's why I am surprised it can implemented so poorly. :silly:
Honestly after 2 weeks with this phone, I'm beginning to question whether it has a fingerprint scanner at all. Feel like I may as well just remove my fingerprints and forget it exists.

I sold mine last week, of same reasons. Useless fp, might as well be non existent.
I had to retrain myself with how to use the finger print scanner. With other phones, I'm used to using the tip of my finger, but that doesn't work with this scanner. As HellRoot describes above, I now lay the flat part of my finger against the scanner so that my finger is parallel to the phone (not pointing at an angle). Now I can get it to work very reliably.

Sadly not working for me at all.
Not to mention I encountered "flip case" bug when the phone is refusing to accept touch screen input to take a call.
This "Sony experience" is much more frustrating than I ever expected and that comes from a guy that used LG V30 for 2 years.
If they do not fix software issues with Android 10 update, I will seriously give it to my mom or wife and buy a propper phone.
My FP sensor worked perfectly for two weeks, I did not get a single "Partial FP detected" and was wondering what's with the bad press.
Then, gradually over the course of a day, it's started playing up. Now I'm in line with everyone else, frustrating experience at less than 20% hit rate. Android 9 or 10 doesn't seem to make a difference, tried factory resetting etc.
Checking the Service Menu (*#*#7378423#*#* from the Dialler --> Service Tests --> Fingerprint Test) returns the following:
Fingerprint Sensor Status:
Sensor not OK
Sensor HWID:
0x0603
I can't seem to find more information on this error code, contacting Sony has returned the typical "Are you running the latest software?" and "Have you tried restarting your device?"

I just got mine yesterday, pretty much everything work perfectly except for the fingerprint, and mine also show the same Service Tests info as yours.
When I scan my finger, it usually register only at certain angle, and usually only at my 2nd press on the scanner, which is quite frustrating
I really wonder if this is a software bug or hardware problem so I can have the store replace a new one.

But seriously they do not mind to use not so reliable devices. Xperia 5 is still an upgrade for Xiaomi Note 4 or Asus M1 Pro user.

It appears to be Software. I have issues only with unlocking the screen. The Banking apps seem to work fine (for now)

That's good to hear. I suspect so too because the service tests show everything was fine when I first bought the phone (it was running Pie at the time) and I started upgrading to Q soon afterward. And it was the 2nd day after I upgraded to Q that I notice the service test "Not OK" info.
Hope it can be fixed in the near future update and off topic: hope that update will also include patch for third party launcher to work with Q's Gesture (my most annoyed thing about Q)
Edit: After a few days using it, I realize it recognize the finger really well at certain angles. It never scans well with full finger but almost never miss when I use my finger tip or side. So I guess I can live with it for now. But still hope for improvement soon.
Well, other Xperias like XZ2, XZ3, XZP just got updated to 10 recently. And, all I've seen so far are complaints about 2 things: no swipe gesture (because the stock launcher hasn't been updated, which is rather stupid) and fingerprint on those devices all become less responsive. It took many times pressing to work, which sounds just like our problem.
So I guess this is a software based problem from Sony's side. Maybe some bad fingerprint driver I guess. Anyway, hope Sony is aware of this and get it fix soon with December security update (also hope for third party launcher patch too)
Well, I'm on A13 Beta 4.1
I have noticed FP is not consistent at all..
For some, it's unlocking after many tries or can't even register FP..
At first i thought it was an issue in A12 where FP is registering Thumb expression but unable to unlock fast enough (No. I haven't noticed but where my P6a can be unlocked with unregistered Finger)
After moving to A13 Beta 4.1 it got worst..
Just now I have noticed that FP is working completely fine when your Finger is little wet.. Yes, you read it right..
At first even I was confused but then after some searching and applying logic, i gotta know that If your registered finger is Dry, I won't be able to read it properly so Titan M2 chip just refuse to accept it..
But Once you made your finger little wet(Little saliva or less than drop of water which is enough to make your finger wet enough), It just unlock it in 1st try..
I tried it for around 2 days.. So yes, If you are having trouble unlocking your P6a, Just make your registered finger little wet & unlock it..
Before we start complaining about M2 Chip, we need to acknowledge that all phones which don't comes with security like M2 chip just unlock device instantly because they don't have additional security like M2 chip...
Sorry for bad Englis...
yeah I'm noticing the same thing... and you're right that the moisture (or oil) level in my finger matters. Sometimes I can unlock my phone easily and sometimes it just can't read my fingerprint at all. When that happens, I try to re-register and I would repeatedly get "can't read your fingerprint" errors. Even tried removing my screen protector, but same issue.
Started noticing it when I took a trip to a dry/hot city. Started noticing repeated fingerprint errors.
In fairness though, any amount of moisture on my finger resulted in my 3a XL not recognizing it.
I do definitely prefer the physical sensor though vs the under screen solution.
Odd thing is that I'm back home now where it's not as humid or hot or dry and suddenly having numerous issues with my fingerprint. I'm on Android 13 beta 4 and fingerprint was fine for 4 days or so. Tried re-registering FP today and I kept on having sensor registration issues as well as FP reading errors - repeatedly.
In fact, I didn't have much issues with the FP since I got the 6a a week ago (when I was on Android 12 and then switched to Android 13 beta 4), so not sure what changed. Going to switch back to Android 12 and see if that makes a difference.
FP is also hit or miss for me. I'm on Android 12 and actually I couldn't register my fingerprint few times when I bought the phone. In the end, after some reboots and setting all the apps up I managed to register my fingerprints but now sometimes they are scanned without issues and pretty fast, but also sometimes I get info that fingerprint is not recognized and I have to put my pin.
Im guessing most of these issues will be fixed with software updates. It seems this device may have been a bit rushed to market. This is typical new device stuff though.
