Mate 8 on Verizon - Mate 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I know people buying the device with At&t and T-Mobile in mind, however looking at specs for the Mate 8 virtually every sub model has Verizon LTE bands, ones necessary to work on the network. However, it is soley LTE compatible. So, with that being said, will this work on a pure Verizon LTE only basis? (similar to the HTC A9) Has anyone tried this just yet? I happen to be in an area where Verizon has LTE virtually everywhere I go.

Depends, do you know if Verizon rolled out VoLTE in your area?

VoLTE is in my area and the mate 8 doesn't work. Doesn't even read the SIM card? Very weird. I ordered a new SIM. Should be here today. Hopefully that will help.

I actually have a CDMA / LTE Mate 8. Not sure if it will work on Verizon. It sees Verizon's CDMA network but not Sprint, wonder if a sim card would work though.

Didn't know you could buy a CDMA Mate 8? Interested as I wanted this device but I'm on Verizon.

It's the China Telecom model
http://prepaid-data-sim-card.wikia.com/wiki/China
According to this China Telecom's network is really similar to Verizon. Which is probably why my phone sees Verizon cell towers but my ATT sim won't work in the phone even with it unlocked because it's stuck on CDMA / LTE. I'm not even sure if it's a software issue because even the debranded roms doesn't work. Pretty annoyed since I ordered my phone and wanted it working on ATT. It seems that the gray model of the phone is sold out everywhere expect this CDMA / LTE model. Wish I just ordered the silver model, I confirmed with the seller that the silver model is in stock and supports ATT.
I'm tempting to ask a friend with Verizon to let me test their sim card. Just for fun before I try and return this thing lol.

Thanks, does it take a nano sim? Also I think it needs to have band 13 for the lte to work properly on Verizon.

Yeah it takes nano sim and true I don't think Band 13 would even work if the phone had it because the IMEI has to be whitelisted or something for Band 13.
From my I understanding the only way you'd get a Mate 8 working on Verizon would be to activate a Nano Sim in another 4G LTE phone then put it into the Mate 8.

With the International Rom I got my CL00 Mate 8 this far.. if I had a Verizon sim I'd test it, this is with my ATT sim in, it refuses to do GSM / LTE only CDMA / LTE.
But it sees the towers no problem, wonder if it would work though.

Hey @Blue Viuda it would be superb if you would test your theory out for me, since I'm stuck on Verizon and really enjoy the Mate 8. You would be doing a service to the world good sir, please and thank you

Technically it works on Verizon, but they will not let you use it on their network. You would have to call Verizon and give them the ESN number of the phone for them to provision it but they will tell you no, you can't activate it with them. This is one of the reasons I dumped their a**es a few years ago. I hate everything about Verizon.

1+ dumped Verizon for restrictions. Tho they've got the best network

Me and @Abumarf were actually testing this earlier this week. You'd get a 4G signal but calls will not work nor will data. Sometimes after a minute or two it just says no service and never reconnects. But if you're saying it needs to be provisioned do you think CDMA Workshop could come in handy? I have provisioned many Sprint phones over to Metro and Cricket so I know what I'm doing.

Verizon is coming around on unlocked phones. I brought my Nexus 6p to them a couple of weeks ago and they added the IMEI to their whitelist and gave me a new sim and it works perfectly, even though they don't sell a 6p. The Verizon guy that did it didn't want to give the phone back because he liked it so much.
Where do you guys go to see what band your phone is using? Is there an app or is it in a menu?

[Q] Unlocking Droid Charge to work on T-Mobile's Network

Greetings folks,
I apologize for posting this in this forum especially if a question has already been answered similar to what I'm asking but I can't seem to find a solution specifically to the problem that I am facing so I come to you all for help.
I have this brand new SCH-i510 Droid Charge by Verizon. I would like to use the phone but on T-Mobile's network and this phone does have a slot where a SIM card is installed. However when I try to put my working T-Mobile's SIM card (the one that they've issued me) into the Droid Charge phone, of course the phone will say that the SIM card is from an unknown source. Now keep in mind that since the phone is brand new, this phone want's me to initially set the phone up which means going through the setup of the SIM card, which is the first thing. So I can't. Now if I had a SIM card just laying around the house from Verizon, at least it would get me past this screen, but out of all the junk that I have horded over the years, I can't find one from Verizon.
I have, on the other hand, played with some ROM's to where I had to use the ODIN program and have successfully gotten myself past this screen without the use of the SIM card but I can not remember how in the hell I did it.
Is there any way that I can basically use ODIN to unlock this phone to where I can use it on T-Mobile's network and at the same time get it rooted as well??
I've had this phone for two months and the only thing that I've been able to use it for is to show off to my friends that I have one but put it away before any of them ask to play with it only to find out that it's still unusable?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!! I mean A LOT!!!
Sincerely,
Leonard Peacock
get a prepaid verizon sim, why would you use it on tmo anyway verizons 4g blows it out of the water !!
This phone will never work on T-Mobile's network. This phone is CDMA. T-Mobile is GSM. A CDMA phone will never be able to connect to a GSM network. The SIM in this phone is for LTE, not GSM.
The LTE radio in the Charge uses the SIM, and AFAIK, the LTE radio doesn't use the same frequency as any of T-Mobile's bands.
Please be a troll...I just laughed while reading this.

Ain't gonna happen
The Droid Charge/SCH-i510 uses CDMA for everything EXCEPT 4G. The SIM card is ONLY for 4G data connectivity. You can still use the phone with Wifi on no network. If you can't get past the login screen, I suggest flashing a new ROM (like Team Black Hat's GB2.3.6 rooted/deodexed/debloated) with Odin. If you can get an unlock code for the phone, you may be able to use it on Sprint's network. Verizon may give you an unlock code if you're a current and loyal customer. Otherwise, there are various semi-reliable Googleable ways to unlock it (sometimes requiring payment to sketchy 3rd party companies).
Some bad news
Sorry, but it's not possible... The sim card is only for LTE, and the phone contains no GSM ratio, thus can't be used on T-Mobile's network, unless tmobile decides to use LTE on the same bands as Verizon, and switch their network over to CDMA, also, you would have to flash the phone and unlock it.

All phone functions run off of the SIM card. Unless you figure out how to unlink the two radios somehow, the Charge is VZW only as far as a Phone goes.
What they are saying can be challenged, remember the blackberry storm, that phone is on verizon and ive seen it operate on verizon at&t and straight talk, so its possible. Google sim-unlock and search for the unlock code but its expensive. By the way the droid 2 global is verizon cdma but its also cdma.

The bb storm and Droid 2 global were "world" phones. This one is not. It contains no edge, umts, hspa, or hspa+ radios or a sim card slot for such radios and therefore cannot operate on t-mobile's network.

Heres an idea; instead of making things hard on yourself by trying to do the impossible; sell your charge and buy a tmobile phone.

Even if they would, it will never work on T-Mobile or at&t. Like everyone else has said, this phone doesn't contain the proper hardware to connect to their networks. If you look elsewhere on this board, people have been unsuccessful even getting it to connect to other CDMA networks.

Not Getting 4G/LTE on AT&T in the US

So I finally ran Speed Test at several locations on mobile and am only getting 2-3 mb download and 1-2 upload. I have never seen a 4G or LTE symbol next to the signal bars either, it's typically either H or H+. I am on the international model MHA-L29 in the USA, and I know that the locations I've tested my phone at have LTE for AT&T. I activated the phone 2-3 days ago. Is there something I need to do in my settings? Is there anything to check?

Let us know when you fix it ,good luck.
So my forum searching has led me to this path: Buy a cheap 4G AT&T GoPhone ($30), and call AT&T to update my IMEI with the IMEI of the new phone and tell them to activate LTE. Supposedly that worked on AT&T when the original OnePlus came out in the US and people were having the same issue I am having.
Just another update in case anyone is following:
I was able to get though the idiot AT&T prepaid rep and to a tech support guy last night. He said he is going to have them manually enter my IMEI into "the database" and see if that helps get me LTE. My phone is showing as "unknown device" to them right now, so he said check back in a week-ish and see if it's changed from "unknown" to "Huawei Mate 9", which will indicate that my IMEI is in the database. If so, then I check my speeds again. The tech support guy also confirmed that the idea of buying a $30 prepaid AT&T LTE phone and having them update the IMEI with the one from that phone would do the same thing. Anyway, now we wait a week....

It's just because it's an international phone and not officially available on a US carrier (yet). Still sucks though. Supposedly if I switched to T-Mobile it would get LTE out-of-the-box, which I may do if this doesn't work. Lucky I'm on prepaid so switching shouldn't be an issue if I need to.

I'd pretty much guarantee that I'd have LTE on my service provider as long as the correct bands are supported. So it seems like AT&T needs to vet every device for some reason.

Yeah, they (AT&T) do have a "database" for devices, and some international devices are "unknown" unless they're specifically entered. And not just the general device, Huawei Mate 9, I'm talking about specific IMEIs.

Yup, that sounds pretty bad to me. You're paying them for service. They shouldn't care that it's an AT&T or unlocked device. They get paid either way although it kinda sounds like they want to push you toward buying devices through AT&T by making you jump through hoops to discourage you.

I guarantee you that every provider in the US wants you to buy phones through them. It is still capitalism over here There is definitely more bullsh*t to deal with if you bring your own device and/or do prepaid, including crappier customer service, but the trade-off is that it's cheaper and you can switch providers anytime.
Odd, I have a L29 on ATT and LTE works just fine. Put my SIM in and no problems whatsoever.

Weird. How do you know? Do you see an "LTE" symbol in the bar, or "4G"? When you run Speed Test, what are you're DL and UL speeds? Where in the US are you located? Last question (for now), were you already on AT&T with an LTE-equipped phone prior to the Mate 9, and if so, did you just pop in the SIM (did you verbally give AT&T the IMEI of your Mate 9)?

Hey @DKM119, were you already on T-Mo with a LTE-equipped phone prior to switching to the Mate 9? If so, did you give them the IMEI of your Mate 9, or did you just pop the SIM out of the old phone and into the Mate 9? Just trying to prepare in case I do switch to T-Mo.
International unlocked phones refer to LTE as 4G therefore they show 4G icon. when you see 4G on an international phone it means you have lte. quick clarification

I have the same problem on Verizon. Enable VoLTE helps. I'm hoping updates will fix that, otherwise I may have to sell this great phone. Unless someone else.has some fixes. I played with different APNs, everytip I could find, no luck. Anybody who has Verizon I'd wait till if there is a solution before buying.

From what I can tell the cdma radio isn't being activated on my unit. This would explain why you get data/calls but can't send texts. I'm wondering if the global unit has cdma properly enabled.

I have the global unit too. From everything online I see the CDMA bands between the global mix2 and globlal mix2s are the same, but calls/texts do not work with VOLTE off on the mix2s, while they do on the mix2.
Either some of the bands aren't working, or there is some firmware difference preventing the mix2s from working properly on verizon.
I wonder if the dev rom will work, but I can't find any update packages to the dev rom and my bootloader is locked for another week.

Edit: Found it under mobile networks tab w/ choose automatically unchecked
I'm new here.
One of my friend brought me a mi mix 2s 64 Go from China. It works perfectly on verizon.
As I'm not a specialist and wanted the global rom (and i'm a mac user...), I bought on ebay a 128 Go global one. I've just received it and impossible to have a connection to Verizon network!!!! It drives me crazy!!!!

Since he bought a 64gb model in China it has to be the Chinese version (or did he buy it in Hongkong?). Because the 64gb model must be a Chinese model the connection issue must be somewhere else... Are your apn settings correct? You should have just waited a little bit and flash global rom on your own, as soon as a fastboot rom is available it's done in 10 minutes
Not even connecting to the cellular network
So I've just bought a new Mi Mix 2S from gearbest and am having trouble connecting to Verizon in any capacity.
The first and largest problem (at least in my opinion) is that the phone shows no signal at all with the Verizon sim. It just shows unfilled signal bars with an 'x' next to it.
Second is that it appears as though I am not allowed to change the MCC or the MNC. This appears to be the case as when I try to complete this operation, the apn I am editing or creating either gets removed or does not save.
Got any advice?

I used a pre-existing sim/plan. I popped the Sim out of my axon 7 and just put it directly into the mi mix 2S. And for what it's worth, the axon 7 has had no Verizon connectivity issues for the better part of the past two years.
Should I just go to the Verizon store bad have tech support try to help?

I think that's your best option to see what they say, I'm from the UK so I don't have too much knowledge on Verizon themselves, BUT I do know (think I know lol) if you use a device not from them directly, you need to be using a pre-existing SIM/plan

T-Mobile gm1915 no longer compatible with att's network

I know this might be a tricky question and I'm probably out of luck here, but I figured to still give it a try.
I currently have the T-Mobile's gm1915 op7 pro using att's network, and I was informed that this particular model will become obsolete once att phrase out its 3G service. Upon checking att's compatibility whitelist I realized that the only op7 pro model that att supports is the global/US unlocked gm1917 variant.
So my question is, is there any methods such as software spoofing that I could trick att's network into thinking that I have the gm1917 model?
The area I live in doesn't have T-mobile cellular coverage so changing carriers would be a pain , op7 pro has been a great phone and I would hate to give it up due to silly reasons like this.

I have the same model of phone and the exact same question. Although to add more info, it's not just that they are dropping 3g. They are also adding in "eSim" cards and requiring those. I suspect part of the reason the unlocked version of one 1+7p is allowed and the t-mobile one isn't has to do with eSim compatibility. I am however not sure and trying to navigate this bull**** REALLY quick. The sim card that came with the "free" phone att sent without asking provides full signal strength but I can't make any calls and I'm worried it maybe an issue that transcends the signal strength.
I don't get it, the gm1915 supports 4G bands right?

Afaik it's not just an issue of 4g bands. eSIm cards are (to my knowledge) different technology than regular sim cards. From what I'm reading it's not enough to know the phone is suppose to look for an at&t signal, but that there is a hardware component that allows eSims to program things differently.
I'm *REALLY* hoping someone will tell me I am wrong, but if I am correct this would also be why it wouldn't be enough to spoof info.
Ok I see. You need to reprogram the eSim.
If the phone's unlocked it should be doable.
GM1917 vs. GM1915 on AT&T
I'm leaning heavily towards getting a 7 Pro for my next phone. I'm on AT&T because it's the only game in town where I live. If I can get the GM1915 variant cheaper than the GM1917, can I convert it to essentially be a 1917 afterwards...

Have you tried AT&T advanced tech support?
Keep trying, some techs know a lot more than others.
They already disabled my sim, so I called and complained and they turned it back on. The phone is fully capable, if it wasn't there would be alot of others that would have to be replaced. They can't afford to just shut down that many phones and loose customers.
On this thread it's stated it won't work because of VoLte.

T-mobile listed the gm1915 model on the website as VoLTE enabled, and op7 pro comes with all the bands att could possibly use. But yes I believe this is part of the problem, currently VoLTE is disabled for my device.
I have a feeling that att just didn't brother to make niche devices such as T-mobile op7 pro to be compatible with its own VoLTE network.

Yeah it just happened to me recently, I also had to call in and get my service back on. But the representative told me that they're going to completely shutdown 3g service by Feb,2022. Which then the network will solely rely on VoLTE to support voice calls.
I have no problem getting LTE ,

Is it just LTE or VoLTE? In my settings I only see the 2G/3G/LTE option being default while I couldn't toggle on the VoLTE. 4g LTE only transmits data whereas VoLTE is more refined and support voice over. This will be a problem once att retire its 3g service as now the phone couldn't use VoLTE to call.

wow yeah how did you get volte to work? Did you enable any settings? volte is lte, but I was just making sure becuase it's not necessarily the other way around.
There are many custom roms that will enable it. I still don't understand why people are having so many issues with the gm1915. I have mine one android 11, fully rooted and have working twrp, still have safety net and widevine l1. Only issues I have had is trying to get wlan packet injection with custom Kernal on Android 11. No problem on 10.
Could be that I know how to generate the qr code to decrypt the engineer app. To activate all the bands

General Pixel 7 Pro *does* support dual eSIM

I have the factory unlocked 7 Pro and I saw some people say that it doesn't but I just decided to try it. If you disable the pSIM, you can run two eSIMs at the same time. The first try it seemed confused and asked me if I wanted to enable my pSIM then the settings window froze when I hit cancel instead of yes. I swiped it away and tried again and I'm now running dual eSIM!
This is extremely useful for me because I had to convert my Tello pSIM to eSIM in order to fix my 5G (Tello provisioning issue, not a phone issue) but I don't want to always be using my physical SafeLink SIM.
I fall in love with this phone more every day.

Are there any apps available that will let you know which Carrier you are using?
I am assuming that if you were in an area with weak Verizon coverage, that your phone would utilize Tello and vice Versa.

Tello is set as the default for calls and texts, Verizon for data, and Tello is set to automatically use wifi calling over Verizon when the signal is weak.
This is awesome for me because I can park my Tello number that has 2FA for services that don't yet offer TOTP for $5 a month and then get whatever data SIM has the best deal as the other eSIM while having my SafeLink AT&T pSIM in the phone for an emergency backup. No worries about losing my phone number porting it all over the place.
Heck yeah! I just got my eSIM activated for Dual SIM as well. Unfortunately, it took 3 hours on the call with Verizon and multiple support tier escalations to get it done - not sure why it was so challenging for them.
In my case, both my physical SIM and the eSIM are on Verizon (but separate Verizon accounts - one I use for work and one for personal).

Yeah but you can do dual eSIM now and have your SIM slot free for something else too and switch between the second eSIM or pSIM is my point. It opens up a whole lot of flexibility that wasn't there previously.

So you have a Tracfone (Verizon) esim working on this phone? I can't get my Tracfone psim working on this phone (still works with my Pixel 6 Pro though). Spoke to Tracfone for 3 hrs with no luck. Even got a new psim. For the last 3 days I've been communicating with Google support. They said they escalated the issue.
In the meantime I got a Mint Mobile account and am using one of their esims just fine.

I have a SafeLink pSIM that the phone thinks is TracFone since they're the same company. My pSIM is on AT&T though because I refuse to switch to Verizon for it.
The two eSIMs are US Mobile (labeled Verizon by the phone and uses their network) and Tello (T-Mobile network).
I can run any combo as long as it's only 2 active at a time. The phone prompts me which one to use for data and sets the other as the default for calls and texts. They're both active and I have done test calls to each from my Google Voice and both ring - switching which to use for a text is a simple matter of tapping this indicator and choosing.

TracFone customer service was already lacking before Verizon bought them and has only gotten worse but usually their automated tools work well enough.

Ah, ok. Slightly different circumstances then. Yeah, I was very hesitant in switching over to the Verizon sim (was on AT&T) but all those text messages urging me to switch over just made me rip the Band-Aid off, lol.
On a side note, couldn't be happier with Mint Mobile on the T-Mobile Network. Got around 850 mbps download on it compared to maybe a little bit over 100, on a good day, with Tracfone in the same spot.
It is pretty nice we can use 2 eSims now.

Yep, did that. I've been so frustrated with Tracfone over the years. Hours and hours talking to customer service and each time they transfer me to a "higher up" I get hung up on because their system is broken. I mean, literally each time. But yeah, with Verizon its gotten worse for sure.

Yeah I am sticking with AT&T until they force me off. Verizon is the worst here. The US Mobile SIM was just so I could see if eSIM worked lol, no chance I'll keep it after the 10 day trial.
T-Mobile is indeed excellent in so many areas. I've never seen higher than 560 but hey, 300Mbps during peak time is incredible when Verizon is running around 1Mbps at the same time and AT&T is around 50Mbps.

That sucks. I would have figured that Verizon would only have one whitelist for all the MVNOs. Like my Pixel 7 Pro activated on US Mobile because despite being an unlocked model, it has mmWave, so Verizon added support right away while the unlocked Pixel 7s aren't supported and nobody knows when they will be.
The whole whitelist thing just irritates me period though. If my phone doesn't work, that's my problem, but don't take away the option for me to even try it.
