Idol 3 4.7 dropped in water now screen very dim (please help) - Onetouch Idol 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The phone was fully submerged for about 5 seconds, i removed the back cover and the sim tray and put in a sealed bowl of rice for a day. It started up ok and i was able to make a call but the screen is very dim with no change if i adjust the brightness settings. I then just switched it off again and put it back in the rice as wasn't sure if this was because there may still be moisture in it. I didn't try any of the other functions so not sure if everything else still works. I am new to the site and a noob with phones so was just looking for advice on where i should go from here. Do i phone Alcatel? phone my service provider? repair centre (will it cost alot)? Wait it out? or try starting it up again? (its been in the rice another day) Will my warranty be void? Can the dim screen be fixed DIY?
Sorry for the many questions i've never had this happen and its the first contract phone I've had and only for two months
Hoping for help

It takes longer than a day to dry out. Also make sure you are using new rice from a sealed bag and putting it into a completely sealable container. Give it a few more days. Sometimes it takes a week to completely dry out.

Thanks for the reply and advice. Its in an airtight container. The rice was boxed rice but not in a bag will this make a big difference? should i swap some bagged rice into the container when i can get some? I was tempted earlier to try it again but glad i didn't after reading your post i'll give it a few more days. Do you think the dim screen problem may sort its self out with extra time to dry out? Any idea why it was so dim?
Fingers crossed
Many Thanks

Box rice will have absorbed all the moisture it can while on the shelf. Yes use bagged rice. Dim screen is usually water affecting screen. The backlight will not light up. It is a safety feature if a short is detected anywhere in the device.

Transferred it into some bagged rice. Gonna try stop myself from trying to start it up until Sunday night. Happened on wed morning do you think that will be long enough of a wait.
Many thanks

It's a pretty common problem. You should take to a repair center. It's sounds like pm (Power management) ic gone bad. It' not user serviceable. Forget that rice bs. Take to a professional and get it repaired as fast as possible. Warranty won't cover this.

Why "as fast as possible" ? is it not worth waiting to see if the rice thing works then if not go down the repair centre route?

Those dam celebs and their rice tricks wheres the piper so i can pay him?

out of the rice!
put the cover back on and charged it and started it up the screen wasn't coming on at all now then put a little pressure on the screen as the cover hadn't clicked in right and the faint screen showed up. Could barely see but managed to make a call and receive one. everything seems to work so far except the screen is still almost unreadable. also sometime when using the touchscreen it will go completely black again but randomly putting a bit of pressure on the screen with my thumbs it will then show up again for a while then it goes black agin at some point pop using the touch screen.
Any ideas what the problem is or what i should do now?
Also the dimness varies very slightly with pressure on the screen when trying to get it to come back on.

replace screen
Would replacing the screen fix the backlight problem or is the light produced from another part of the phone?

Fix Backlight???
Anyone know how to fix the backlight?

oh dear, what are you trying to get for a advice? you droped it into water. the water entered the phone, so there is no warranty. you can try to repair it, but when the corrosion starts it can affect every part of a phone (in days, weeks months). Of course you can repair the LCD and touch screen next time motherboard etc. It will definitely cost you more than a new 6039 device. So get over it and buy a new one, ther eis nothing you can do with it.

Just buy the 5.5 inch from cricket it us 129 right now unlocked it from unlock code either from eBay or several unlocker sites u can find with Google search. This is cheaper this n repairing it and u also get the better version of this phone.

[Q] Busted LCD got blue screen?

Okay strait to the point! I've got a Galaxy S2 with Android 4.0.3 bought it 4 months ago.
I accidently dropped my phone and cracked my screen on the bottom right corner. The crack went from bottom and a diagonal line up til the right side. I took a picture below.
imageshack(.)us/photo/my-images/685/20120326152703.jpg
This happened about 2 months ago. No problem since. I dropped the phone a few times afterward but it didnt seem to affect it lucky me.
Yesterday i tried watch some series over my WIFI and the phone got really hot around the camera area. The phone wasn't acting well either and then battery dropped from 75% til about 10% in 10 minutes without any video still showing up. (Never had that problem before). I stopped using it and instead put it on recharge for the next day. And today on the morning it was still okay. Went to school and back with the mobile still working. Put it on my table and checked my PC.
About 2 hours later while cheking up on my galaxy i discovered this.
imageshack(.)us/photo/my-images/198/20120326153629.jpg
I think that the LCD finally busted but i need to be sure if it has something to do with the previous crack and also if you could provide any info about what to do with it? Does my warrenty cover this? Or do i need extra insuranse?
I really need help right now LCD blackned spots
The screen has started to turn black from the core of the LCD leak. I now really think this is a broken LCD screen and not a software problem. If someone knows what i could do to fix this i really could need the help right now.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong,
But it sounds to me like you've busted the digitizer portion of your device. As to it being caused by the small crack on your screen.. i don't really know(can't really see if it's a crack in the glass or digi). At any rate, judging from the second picture you provided us it most definitely looks like you damaged the digitizer.
Most companies don't really cover damaged screens caused by users. However, being that your S2 is only 4 months old you could possibly pass it as "it did it by itself, I don't know what happen". Worth a shot I guess...
If all fails you could bring it to a electronics repair shop or you can repair it yourself via a digitizer part bought on ebay(probably pretty expensive being that its part of the screen)
If all else fails check ebay for a new screen.

If your thinking about taking the DIY road I found a screen for you.Quick note about buying something overseas on eBay: it usually takes awhile for the part to ship and even when you get it, the part may not be functional. But don't fret, eBay is usually pretty good about stuff like this so a working part will be guaranteed or your money back!
If you do decide to repair it yourself I would first research A LOT about your phone. Especially, the disassembly guide! Try to use only credible guides such as iFixit, repair universe etc.
This only applies to flex ribbon cables:
when replacing screens sometimes you have to plug it in a few times before you actually get it to respond(could be cause by oxidation of the pins) if thats the case, you could try to take a #2 pencil eraser and gently rub against the pins and remove the oxidation...
Good Luck!
Please let me know how it goes!

Yes it is really a crack and a very annoying one. It doesn't cause any problems with the touch-function, so I've been using it normally but for the screen, it has gone completely black but for the top right part still a little darkblue. I think I'm going with your first answer and try to check it in on warranty have had a bit luck with it past couple of times but im not sure about changing it myself. If having no luck with warranty then maybe ill try doing it myself.
at any rate weather you get warranty to change it or you fix it yourself maybe youll learn to be more careful and get a case maybe???

z3 water damage

ive read a lot about people having the same problem as i am, but no solution in my search....
soooo my phone fell into a sink of tap water for 10 secs,
i never open my ports since magnetic charging is pretty cool,
water completely ruined the screen (texting and calls still work thanks to my moto 360)
tmo says water damage is "not covered by warranty since there is water damage" even if it was sold to me as waterproof
sony says i can send it in to be evaluated but "it'll probably be a user failure if water is found in the device even if the ports were all closed"
i dont know what to do about this situation...
and my google searches arent helping :/
id hate to pay the insurance but all signs look to point in that direction...
Man if this stuff keeps happening I can see a Class Action Lawsuit coming. This is inexcusable...
Seriously, if you market a device as waterproof, you damn well better make sure it is waterproof. First thing I did with mine when I had some time was to jump into the service menu and test the barometer. Only then did I dunk it in water on purpose for a real test.
I say give call customer support, ask for a manager and escalate.
Same thing happened to me.. Went to T-Mobile, they looked at me like I was stupid and said there's nothing they could do. So I called Sony, they said they'd put it in a machine and test the waterproofing.
Send it in last week, still waiting to hear back. Rep on the phone said there's a 14 day turn-around.. Probably more at this time of the year. though.

i also did the barometer test when i got it, 3 days later, it fell in my soapy dishes and it was fine! i dont know why this time water leaked in
but sony has also taken my phone as with xxquicksh0txx and its going through the same thing
the catch here is they "dont replace the phone, only parts" so if there is something that cant be replaced it has to be returned to me and i have to pay the insurance
I have the same problem. I used the device in a pool and after 15 minutes the device screen went black. The touch screen still works, I see that there is movement with the unit but the screen does not show anything. In contact with assistance from Sony they asked me to send the device for a technical assistance shop. Here in Brazil said it takes up to 12 days to resolve the problem, unfortunately they only exchange defective parts.
I suppose yours is defective, technically if it happened despite all ports being closed.
Hello everyone!!! Happy new year!! I have the same problem with my phone. I wanted to take a picture underwater with my friends and the screen went black. I have submerged the phone before, but never took a picture. So I'm thinking that the seal at the camera button is the one that is faulty. Because te phone was good until I pressed the button. And every person that have had issues with the "waterproof" feature of this phone always say they have the flaps closed, and the vast majority of the problems happen after taking pictures underwater. Maybe if we all gather together we can make sony change our defective units.
I would, I just don't think we have enough water damaged phones to create a change
i got the exact same problem.
my screen is black and i can't see anything but the camera still works, i can launch it with the button and can take pics even with flash.
Maybe if we create a thread where people can post they have had problems with a Z3 not being waterproof, and asking people from different android related pages. We can do something. I think having more than 1 is enough to say this is a problem with the phone.
same sh**
My z3 wash it less than a minute in the sink it switched off I did eveverything to dry it but nothing happens when I plug it it starts to vibrate ?
Sent mine in a few weeks ago, just got an email with a tracking number saying it'll be here tomorrow...
No other email or contact from Sony in the past 2 weeks. Awesome customer service...

Let us know how the phone goes when you receive it. Maybe water "resistance" should have been the marketing gimmick. :good:
Finally received the phone back today. There was a list of things they replaced, which I'll post later when I get home from work.
Everything looks good aside from a few things.
Some glue residue that it more visible between the screen and the housing, it's not bad and isn't very noticeable unless you're looking for it.
Looks like there's something at the bottom of the screen, I'm hoping it's some type of glue that isn't set yet and will eventually go away... If not I'll have to send it back again.
I will however be giving it a bath later tonight to be sure the waterproofing has been fixed.

Moto Maxx / Turbo XT1225 dead / unresponsive

My Moto Turbo went unresponsive sometime back after getting discharged. It never switched ON after i kept it in charging. After a couple of days of hoping it would come back to life i finally took it to Motorola authorized service center (IRLA, Vila Parle, Mumbai). My phone was well within warranty as it was bought in June 2015 but after making me run around to the service station and wait for one and a half hours i was given the shocking news that the phone cannot be treated under warranty as there are signs of liquid damage!!! Since i was 110% sure my phone wasn't exposed to any water drenching or water spilling leave alone submersion i argued with them that it's not possible. Upon listening to my argument the service center head called me to his office cabin and tried to show and explain me the issue. There were white residual marks near the ear piece and camera area inside the phone on the motherboard which were evidence of liquid damage but the only possibility for same was sweat. Now the company claims that the device is water resistant / splash proof and then when something like this happens they say they can't touch it! This is such bull @#&* on the company's part. A mail with snaps of the affected area to the service center area manager and lenovo manager showed zero support and arrogance. Further a call to Motorola customer care showed same or more negligence. I request the XDA community to help me raise this issue with the company and help me out over here.
The pics aren't super clear but it does look like there has been quite a bit of moisture in the phone, and that is likely what caused the damage. Maybe try disconnecting the battery, cleaning the PCB with alcohol and then reconnecting the battery. I doubt you will win a battle for a warranty claim.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the suggestion. Will try and do that and see.
That's very unfortunate to hear. Another possibility was if you shower with the phone in the bathroom. The hot moisture/humidity really takes a toll on the phone over a period of time, nearly identical to that of wetting a phone.
Anyhow, the reason why I'm saying this is because some people including myself have experienced that before. I'm sharing this with you just in case you also do that so you do not damage any future product you may have. Best of luck.
Sent from my DROID Turbo using Tapatalk
Placing it in the freezer then out in the hot does this too. However the water should be relatively distilled. The dirt and oils that has already made it's way in there will bring the electrolytes out.
Does anyone have servis manual? Thanks
@emailrex Is your turbo gets back life or not? if not pm me or watsapp me on 8 4 0 8 8 0 5 0 0 2 will see if i can help you.
Hi Shreyas,
Nope it couldn't be made functional. If I may ask how would you attempt to repair it?

First sorry for my late reply. Busy in Exams . Actually i repair mobiles. By seeing the image where the moisture is taken on that part is related to the sensors area so at first investigation i didn't think that there is any issue with that. As u think that it cant be made functional i think i will just get a chance to try if it gets repaires it will be gain for u.

XZp not so waterproof - usb port vulnerable?

I've been playing around the service menu and tested the Pressure Sensor. In a solid waterproof phone, pressure should remain steady when acted upon by outside forces.
I simply tried to moderately blow some air into the USB port and there's a notable difference. Also removed the sim cap and sucked on the port. Air was clearly passing through.
I'm curious if it's just my phone with this issue in which case I'll replace it, or if it's a design fault, in which case you shouldn't submerge it.
In the screenshots you'll see the pressure difference. So please test this by accessing the service menu *#*#service#*#*, > tests > pressure sensor and simply blow some air into it.
And for the giggles and ranting, there's the sony talk thread https://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xper...s-waterproof/m-p/1237116/highlight/true#M2652

In Xperia Z3 there was a hole in the lower-left corner that if not covered by hand also let the pressure to drop down.
I think that every phone has to have some kind of a "blow off valve" to prevent internal pressure from rising when the phone heats up to avoid damaging the seals around the screen and the back.
Note that when you cover the usb port pressure stays perfectly stable. The phone is still waterproof it just lets the internals "breathe"

It's far more than a simple valve. For example if you have water in the port and you blow some air to take it out, that water will actually go inside the phone. I'm asking because if ever submerged, water pressure will be far grater than my air blowing capabilities ))) so things can get messy pretty fast.
It's far too easy to change the pressure inside it, so all I need to know is if other XZp are behaving the same way or if it's just mine.

As I said Z3 behaved similarly and I have submerged this phone a couple of times and never had any problems with it. Note that air particles are much more able to squeeze through tight spaces than water.
Same principle aplies to waterproof jackets, they let the air pass through so that you wont get sweaty while at the same time the won't let water go through.

Yes man, I know what a valve is and how it operates in a phone. I've been having xperias for over 5 years. I'm not on Talk.sonymobile, I'm on xda. So if you can try the test whenever you can. All it takes is 1 minute.
I opened this thread because I need to see if mine has those rubber seals too loose or if it's a general and normal thing. I asked for xzp owners to try the test because on my phone air passes virtually unobstructed.

There is a pressure regulation in every phone. The reason is the battery, in case the battery is defective (see Shamesung Note ), it will produce gas. This gas can later inflame, hence it is important to get it out of the device.

I know, I just spent a lot of money on this thing and I'd rather avoid damaging it. In my opinion that valve is way too lose.
Check this video out, I do not agree with this idiotic test but in the end the phone got water damaged. Vibrator Motor is right next to the USB port which in this video it keeps on vibrating even after device is off.

I know, I'm sorry for jumping the gun. Didn't get a full night sleep.
I'm weary because I had Xperia XZ for a week, did the same test but the breathability on the usb port was minimum. Anyway, I'll be careful. My (very) old Xperia Z got water damaged in the pool due to a worn rubber band on the headphone jack. Damage was extensive.

If damaged by submerging, I'd send it on for guarantee and request a new one. It states IP68 proof, that means 30 minutens fully submerged.
Oh and btw, the guy actually FROZE his phone for 12 hours .

I know.... It's an idiotic test. But leaving that aside, it is compared to another waterproof phone which worked as good as new afterwards. So it's safe too assume that the USB might be letting in a bit more than just data and power.
It's a bit of a letdown, I'll wait for the teardown videos to see if they finally coated the motherboard and other boards against water ingress. Just like you see in the iphone and samsung.

I know it's fun, it's even more so when you wash it in the sink in front of people haha. Can you please do me a solid and test the pressure sensor while blowing air into the usb? like I tried - 2 cm away, full lung pressure on the usb, and tell me if that pressure rapidly moves up. It will help me sleep better at night after I wash the thing haha.

I'll do so in 13 minutes, im currently running a battery test. Just as side note, Amazon Underground seems to drain battery like hell on 7.1.

Ok, done. Pressure going up rapidly. Consider it normal.

It's a design flaw then..... I'll buy the usb silicon caps just to be extra safe.... Shame they didn't manage to build this properly.....
Forgive me my ignorance. I know it's stupid question and I know answer will be yes, but it's always worth double checking.
So I can submerge xz premium without any usb/jack and other ports covers as they were just designed to be able to handle that?

Yes, that is the idea behind IP68 certification. I dumped my phone in the pool yesterday, just for fun. Just PLEASE make sure to dry the phone before charging it. I know that sounds stupid but there is some photos around of ppl claiming their devices just started burning. Due to the nature of energy transport in USB-C 3.1, that is almost impossible - unless you short-circuit it with water .

My wife's phone went in dishwasher a short time

So we found it in dishwasher and dried it off and everything work fine. When we tried to charge it after it was out of battery an triangle alert came on screen asking with a water splash sign that alerted is there was water in phone. She used a cutie gently and dried off charging portal, still nothing. Then she removed s pen it was wet. How can she she dry it. She can't live without phone. Chuckle. Note doesn't want to wait till tomorrow to take to store. Also we can from Apple and assumed these were water proof.
Thanks
Point a fan directly at the port. Let it sit for awhile.
Its a hot or miss with that cuz is a software bug. At least I remember I took a shower with a phone a few years ago samsung and no matter how long I waited or what I did it continued to give me that warning. Ended up having to put a claim in with Verizon. That was way back with the s8 plus so idk if they made it better. Nvm just remembered I didn't take a shower with it, I actually took it in the ocean with me lol

Phones aren't meant to tolerate any type of forced water like jets from a dish washer. But if it worked normal, I'd say use wireless charging.

Resistant and resistance has a threshold that I would still take with a grain of salt.
They are water resistant not water proof unfortunately so water can get inside.
As someone else mentioned try wireless charging once your pretty sure it's dried out inside.
Should have put in rice, try again - I fixed it once I like this

Putting electronics like mobile phones in rice is a myth .
It's been proven that it does not work and won't help since rice can't suck water out of device that has got water inside the device.
Warm dry area for a few days, ideally surrounded by Silca Gel you get inside different packages such as food or sensitive items that should remain damp free
Ummm how did the phone end up in the dishwasher, im dying to know lol.
Thats a new one for me .

If you have a dishwasher that stands under sink or w.e it's called in kitchen then if the phone was laying above and one of drawers in the dishwasher was pulled out probably top one. My guess could be she/he accidentally knocked down the phone so it landed into first drawer and when they pushed it in and closed the dishwasher they didn't notice the phone was in there. Just my guess but still quite odd how it really got there.

The fan idea in a warm dry room is the safest bet.
If it has a good charge, use the phone and warm it up.
Watch from any sign of malfunction other than the warning.
If anything behaves abnormally power it down asap and do not power up again. It may limit help the water damage.
It will need services if so... at the very least the back needs to come off so it can dry.
Forget rice; use anhydrous isopropyl alcohol to flush out water contaminated electronics. Save my coffee dunked Buds case like that. Yes with a live battery. Still working a half year latter. I flushed it within a minute of the coffee plunge.
Alcohol can craze polycarbonate plastics; be careful. Dry it with low pressure air quickly if possible.
I've use a blower bulb (the kind you use to clean cam lens) and low pressure air to clear a rain drop from the C port.
I then let it sit for about an hour afterwards until the warning cleared.
DO NOT apply power if warning is still on since you know it was water exposed. If water is still present it can cause extensive damage if power is applied.
Do Not use high pressure air as you can force water past the seal and into the phone!
These phones are well sealed so you'll probably be ok especially if it was in a case.
Always keep these puppies in a good case, it will save you from a lot of grief

Worked ofr my late dads iphone , maybe a coincidence
Rice is not a good desiccant... in any event even a great desiccant is not what's needed here.

Well to be honest rice didn't do a thing to your iPhone trust me. If you left it for a day or two in rice you can just as well leave phone alone without rice for 1 or two days and you will see same effect. So professionals did a test and proven the rice method is false and is just a waste of time and a myth.

Do you have a source for that claim? Here's a published, peer-reviewed controlled experiment that showed that for other wet electronic devices (specifically, hearing aids), rice was in fact a good desiccant, comparable to commercial desiccants:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/278... and the, several of the commercial desiccants.

You know that government can put lies and false facts on their sites too? Secondly hearing aids is something else than smartphone and tablet and so on.
I'm going to look for some proven source since I remember seeing few where they tested and got result that rice does nothing to smartphones, tablets and such and that people going around telling other people out there to use it is a falsely and a myth.

Here is two examples sites stating rice won't do anything to help you on getting water out of a electronics.

Lol, it's a conspiracy by the rice lobby! Better alert QAnon!
It's a peer-reviewed scientific study. It happens to be archived on a National Library of Medicine website, but it was not "the government" that conducted or published the study.
When you track down the source for your claim, you'll probably find it was a repair shop trying to drum up business. [EDIT: Yes, you've added your sources now and that's what they are.]

A domain that ends on gov belongs to government so link you shared is a government owned business.
Secondly I think you are on wrong track, most professionals that are not repair shop have tried method and gotten result that rice does nothing that's how it was proven it isn't working. I given you two source and none of them are repair shop so seriously wake up.

So sources that conflict one another. What's new. But I hardly think discrediting one because it says .gov is reasonable.
Its from the national medical library talking about the drying out hearing aids for Pete's sake.
