Z5 loss of network - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Z5 since release day using stock rom. The phone as been fine. recently i've noticed an issue with the phone loosing signal.
I can leave the house with a signal but then randomly throughout the day it will loose any signal and wont find any networks when i search manually. I have to then turn off the phone take out the sim card and reinsert and its ok, until it does it again.
I thought it may be a faulty SIM but i have noticed in Strava when I loose signal It doesn't know where I am so not sure if it is loosing GPS the same time i loose network coverage?
Anyone else had this?

I have the z5c and have been having intermittent problems transitioning off WiFi to mobile data and I end up without service until I restart the phone or title mobile data on and off. This will happen a few times a day when I leave the house etc. But it didn't happen every time.

Thats what I thought mine was BUT even if i toggle mobile data on or off it deosnt work.
ive tried restarting and even that sometimes doesnt work so I have to turn phone off, remove SIM and reinsert and turn phone on.
I dont get why it would also stop the GPS/Locations from owrking. Looking at my google maps history it hasnt been tracking on there when i Loose signal. Looks like its a hardware issue.
Going to try and do a hard reset and see what happens

Let me know how that goes for you. Mine does fine with just a software restart. I wonder if your contacts on your sim reader is touchy. I also noticed I originally said I had the z3c....I have the z5c. Whoops

Did a software restore the other day.
Woke up this morning , no phone network, had phone network last night. Did a restart no luck, turned phone on and off and it got signal again.
I've booked in in for warranty repair as it must be hardware related.

Thats painful.

Sooo... UPDATE
Tired new SIM from EE, another refresh still no luck.
Sent the phone to Sony to repair

Did you repair your phone with pc companion?if not give it a shot.

Yeah That was the first thing I did was to restore the phone to factory settings. that didn't work

Sony have sent a replacement phone so should be getting that tomorrow.
Quick service. sent Monday they dispatched a replacement Thursday.

Have the same issue. Signal just goes randomly and does not come back until I reboot. Never had to remove the sim so far.
I did any software thing I could imagine, however no luck. I belief it is hardware related.

Antenna Issue : No Network Access

Ok so this has happened every night I have had the Captivate (3 nights), I go to bed at night and in the morning where my signal bar should be I have a circle with a slash through it (no network). When I go to bed I will have like 2-4 bars of service but something must happen and I lose all network functionality. I have to restart the phone which solves the problem but is a serious pain. This also happens sometimes randomly throughout the day.
Any ideas if this is a common problem with all Captivates or if it is a hardware or software issue?
I like this phone and if I can get it to work properly I love it more than my iphone but not getting service is a buzz kill and I will return it. (Bought it unsubsidized for $500 because I couldn't deal with my iphone anymore)
Note: I live in Tampa which generally has good AT&T service and have had no other problems with other phones
Did you turn off the phone and remove the sim card for a few minutes?? According to an at&t rep doing that solves network issues.
The problem I had today was that the phone showed full bars, but I couldn't send a text or make calls. I took the reps advice and it's fine for now.
Well I will give that a try tonight and see how it goes and post back tomorrow with my results. I really love everything. Else about this phone and would be a shame of I had to get rid of it because of silly antenna issues. Thanks for the advice!

Are you sure you don't have any power saving apps on that are turning off the radio after a few hours? Did it happen when it was stock with no programs installed? Might try and flash it back to stock and see if that solves the problem.
Otherwise you could always walk into an AT&T store and ask for another one and see if it still happens.
Well last night it did the same thing after removing the sim for about 10 minutes before bed.
And as far as knowing if it did this before I rooted it.....well...I owned the phone for maybe 10 minutes after unboxing it before I rooted it. So I have no idea if it is because it is rooted. I don't have any apps on it for power saving purposes and nothing should be killing the radio. Problem is that it isn't like airport mode is on...its completely out of service and the only way to get service back is to reboot. Turning the radios on and then off again while the phone is on won't work...it must be a reboot.
I will probably end up returning it and trying one more Captivate before I look else where for a new phone. But after seeing this screen it would be hard to look at any other phone twice.
iphone4 would be a good screen alternative
ur antenna issue is unique and a new phone will probably fix it. id get that sim replaced too.
The new iPhone would be ok...but I can't go back to an iPhone. I have had 4 of them (2 first gens) and I am so bored of them. And I know people rave about the iPhones new screen but side by side with this phone I would take the extra screen real estate anyway.
And I did consider getting a new sim card too. I think I will wait until towards the end of my 30 day return policy and trade in for a new one.
Thanks for all the help guys

I've had mine since July 18th and had never have this happen...till this morning. When I pulled it off charger I noticed the signal meter what a circle with a slash. Well, I dont get great reception in my apartment so it didnt phase me until I was on my way to work and still didnt have a signal. So, I turned it off and back on and then it had a signal. So I dont know what was up with that. I'll keep an eye on it tomorrow to see if its something thats going to happen regularly.
Hmmm...so I'm not the only one having this problem. Yeah I don't get superb service in my apartment but I have also never really had any other network problems with other phones.
Wonder if there is something that kills the network if you don't have a decent signal for a certain period of time. I just wish it wasn't everyday. On the brightside nobody will wake me up with emails or texts or calls.

General ATT Warranty Question

I can't seem to find a straight answer on Google for this. My phone's wifi is randomly disconnecting from my home network. I'll connect it, 3 hours later it's on 4G. I go to my "Wireless and Network Settings" and Wifi is enabled, as soon as I go to "Wi-Fi Settings" it reconnects to my network. It's just a hassle. Also, my speaker will randomly sound like utter ****. As if the treble was boosted 50db. Sometimes during the middle of my phone ringing. It goes from my normal ring tone "deedle deedle doo" to "BLEEDLEBLEEDLEBLOOD." Now, both of these issues are intermittent so I would have no real way of showing a rep in person unless it was coincidentally. Also, I have a slight dent on two corners of my phone, but both of these issues occurred before the cosmetic damage. How would I go about getting ATT to replace my phone? I've heard it's free, then I read the policy on my $8/mo insurance and it said $120 or something, idk.
I think your best bet is to call AT&T and see what they say. If you're within 30 days of purchase just take it to where ever you bought it. If not, they you should go though AT&T.
I am not within the 30 days.
As for your wifi problem, I believe you have the "Night time battery saver" which at night hours (or so) it will turn off the wifi when the phone is not being used, and as soon as you unlock the screen the wifi will turn on automatically.
Hello
I work for at&t. I can tell you this any phone you buy from Att ( cept the iPhone) has a one year warranty. It doesn't matter how many scratches your phone may have really. As long as your screen isn't cracked and you haven't spilled liquid on it Att will replace it.
Now if youve had the phone for more than 30 days. You can't return it to the store. You have to get a warranty exchange via customer service over the phone. So dial 611. Tell them your phone won't connect to wifi, they will ask you to format the phone tell them you already have, and in 2 to 3 days you'll have a shiny new atrix 2.
Hope that helps.

Sorry left something out. Do not do an insurance claim. Just do the warranty exchange. Insurance is really only meant for if you broke your phone or lost it.

I talked to ATT warranty services today. They tried telling me that both issues were caused by a degrading cell tower 25 miles from my location. What does that have to do with my phone not being able to hold Wifi and my speaker sounding gargly? And my phone works fine on the mobile network. She said she would send my phone an OTA update and firmware update and I'd get a call Monday. Coincidentally that same day they said this cell tower would be fixed. Haven't gotten it any updates. And no I'm not on night time battery saver. It happens during the day as well, periodically.

Have I tried what?
The first two weeks I had this phone there were no problems. I have a 360 and 3 iPhones connected to this router as well with no issues.
Well, then you should exchange your phone.
There is a post somewhere here that says A2 is not compatible with 5ghz or something like that. Try using Wifi Analyzer and figure out if your neighbor's router is running on the same channel as your router. Crowded channels = drop. I'm also having problem with Auto Connect feature, but it connects after 10 mins of being in the house. Once I'm connected though I never get a dropped Wifi. It would help if you post the manufacturer and model number of your router.
About the speakers yeah A2 is not built for music enthusiast. My speakers mumbles when i put someone on speaker at full volume lol. I think reviews of the A2 mention something about the speakers not on par with the A1.
After a couple weeks without much trouble, my connection to my home wifi started getting really hit or miss. Tons of disconnects, Atrix wifi antenna just turning itself off, etc. finally tonight I dusted off an old wifi router I had taken back from my parents and hooked it into my Live Wire network (power line networking) on the other side of the house from my existing router. Haven't had a drop in a while now. First router might be hickey, or dying, or the Atrix just wasn't handling a weak signal well.

I had this issue with mine and exchanged within the 30 days. I generally add in that it's rebooting often even after a factory reset. That usually makes the exchange foolproof.

That's my question, since I'm passed the 30 days, is it free? Because with Sprint even when I paid insurance like I am now it was ~$100 to replace a smartphone.

My router is actually brand new. We're in the employee testing for Cox Communication's new Docsis 3.0 routers, and again, it worked fine for about 2 weeks with this same router.

Cool, I'll try throwing that in there as well!
have you tried going to the at&t store to show them what is wrong with your phone so you don't have to explain everything over the phone. They took my phone before and exchanged right at the store ^_^
Try to boost your wifi, check this out http://www.labnol.org/internet/extend-wifi-wireless-network-range/13534/ not a detailed explaination but i hope that helps.
To test your wifi - try to stay within 6 feet range with out any blockage to see if you will get disconnected - if you get disconnected then go to att store and replace ^_^
Ok again. Its free to do a warranty exchange. you have a year to do it. Try calling customer service again. I know it may sound strange but give them less information next time. I wouldn't mention anything about garbled call quality or anything like that, because they are trained to automatically assume there is an issue with either your SIM or a tower nearby.
Next time you call only mention that your phone won't connect to wifi and you've already done a hard reset. Explain that you want a warranty replacement. Like I said it may be backward but the less information you give the better so essentially they can't create a situation where they will tell you its a network issue and not your device (because it sounds like your phone to me.)
The only time you're charged for a replacement phone is when its an insurance issue which is another matter entirely. Like I said in post before as long as your screen isn't cracked and your liquid indicator isn't red ( the little square sticker under your battery it should still be white.) Then Att will replace the phone free of charge.

The only thing is he's mentioned that he's had this particular phone for more than 30. In store we don't have the ability to exchange a phone outside of 30 days (unless the store also happens to have a warranty device center connected to it which is rare.) So most likely he has to have it exchanged over the phone via CS.

Yea, I figured as much about the less is more theory. They're suppose to call me in a few hours, if they don't I'll call them and use this method. I appreciate all the help. No screen cracks and the water damage indicator is white. I should be good!
And to clarify, the insurance covers it in cases where the screen is cracked, water damage, lost/stolen, etc? Basically anything that would be my fault.
Also, physically, how does the exchange work?

[Q] Network Signal In and Out with Reboots

I searched and did not see anyone else experiencing this issue. I have a Black 32 GB stock rooted. It worked fantastic for about 2 weeks and then all of a sudden I noticed the following:
Day 1: No SMS received. I was on WIFI and had network signal in the notification bar but did not receive SMS that were sent to me.
Day 2: No Cellular Signal. I looked at the APN and it had disappeared. I attempted to add it again and reboot the phone and it wouldn't add. The phone began rebooting on its own and continuing with a bootloop after running for about 10 seconds it would reboot again. It did this throughout the day. I called Google and they had me do some soft and hard resets. After the soft reset the phone would connect right after startup then disconnect after 2 seconds and reboot itself. I hard reset the phone and relocked the bootloader and reinstalled factory recovery and it is still doing it.
Google has given me authorization for an exchange but I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas because I'd rather not be without a phone for 2 weeks.
BTW I am on Straight Talk
I had a similar issue
I had a similar issue. After a month of functioning normally, my Nexus(rooted using CFroot, stock ROM, T-Mobile) lost the ability to get reception. First, it showed network signal, but cell access was not functional. A few hours later, bars dropped to zero, and it seemed like I could only get reception in the strongest signal areas. I would get signal sporadically when driving, but never when I was stationary. The phone never had problems with rebooting though.
After spending a day trying to fix it, factory reset, relock, flashing a factory image, I called Google, and they warranteed the phone.

It just seems so much like a software issue as opposed to hardware that it surprises me they are willing to warranty it... but I guess I'm not the expert.

I got a replacement phone pretty quickly. The phone shipped the day after I ordered the replacement, but YMMV.
Why do you think it was a software issue? The problem persisted after I switch back to a factory image. The replacement phone, running the same software does not have the same issue.

That makes sense that it was a hardware issue. I guess it could be a faulty radio or something. I'm glad to hear you got your device shipped so soon. Did you end up having to pay shipping?
I ran a nexus 5 for about 4 days and went through two of them both having issues holding a signal. Both phones would start with LTE and then drop to 2g go to 3g and then 4g back to no bars and then 2g and 3g. I was stock all the way and I wish the nexus 5 worked better. It could be a software issue as when I took the OTA to 4.4.2 it became worse. All the areas I was in while this happened were areas that were supposed to be strong for 4g and LTE.
That said I I need a phone that is a bit more reliable even though I'm on T-Mobile. I switched to the LG G2. It has a better antennae and doesn't keep bouncing between modes when in various areas.

No signal

Good day, today I dropped my phone don't know if it lost signal after this didn't notice until I tried to make a phone call but now there no signal, can't make or receive calls, I notice that at the bottom of the screen it shows my service provider name and next to it says no service so don't know it its hardware related or sim, do you think that if I reset the phone it might work again? Thanks. Right now can't test because I'm at work, but in general information on service it says disconnected

Flash stock with fastboot, if it's the same, it's hardware I'm afraid.
Thanks a lot did already, tried everything seems hardware related, noticed that it also lost nfc connection wondering rich part should I replace to fix it, if only has to do with antenna or the whole mainboard
The NFC radio and antenna are connected to the back cover. Try popping your back cover off and on again.
Dihantar dari Nexus 5 saya dengan XDA-Free mobile app
Thanks already did and nothing, could it be related to some other piece?
go to your dialer app and type in #*06*# and see if a number pops up (your imei number) (dont post the number here)
Did too, also the *#*#4636#*#* and checked if signal was turned on, tried sim in other phones works without problems, I noticed that nfc is not working too, guess it has to do with a piece of hardware as far as I know both antennas are in the back of the phone. Took it to service and they told me it has no problem physically, this is driving me crazy
Also checked that it has no reports of being stolen, imei seems correct and legit checked it also on a site to see if it's valid and its working, it starts with a 32.
My phone wouldn't connect to any network after being in airplane mode on vacation for a week, acted like no signal - empty triangle instead of bars. I called my cell provider (T-Mobile) and after a new SIM and a factory reset they did something on their end because my phone was trying to connect to a tower that didn't exist. I'm a little fuzzy on what they actually did, but it worked. I actually had to do it twice over a couple weeks before it stopped giving me trouble.

Hello
Hello guys, I am on the same boat as Valholy described.
My phone fell on the ground from my hands. When I took the phone from the ground... it was still working(it wasn't shutdown nor restart), I only noticed that there was no more signal. Tried to restart/shutdown, factory reset, different sim card but no luck at all... As Valholy described it shows provider's name on the bottom of the screen, but there is no signal yet.. It seems like hardware issue. Any recommendation to fix this issue?
Did you fix your phone yet, Valholy?
Thank you

any help please.

Cellular/call signal drops off when wifi is on

I just started playing with my wife's new idol 3 phone. everything is great so far with the exception of when wifi is turned on I noticed that cellular signal turns off and on sporadically. When wifi is off, the cellular signal never drops.
Updated!!!!!! ALCATEL THANKS!!!
The WiFi and Cellular signal issue is gone!! New update is great.
I have not noticed that. I leave my Wi-Fi on and connects when home without issue. I've check cell signal levels regularly on new phones. My first impression with this phone is that the cell reception is excellent.

I've noticed that a couple times as well. I assumed it was my SIM card as I changed carriers the same time I got this phone. It's not a deal breaker for me as I actually don't use the phone for calls much anyway. But yeah, it needs to be fixed. Just waiting for the next update.
Great, i thought maybe it was her phone in particular. I mean, I accepted the current update thinking that would solve the issue, but it didn't. Same story.....when wifi is on, the cellular signal turns off, on, off, on....maybe within 5 second intervals. Im shocked many people haven't complained about this.
if it wasn't for your response I was going to return the phone back to Amazon and exchange it for another one.
other than that I think the phone is excellent for the money and since my wife really isn't into development and rooting, for her this is the perfect replacement for her defective S4. however I would still like to be able to install a custom recovery at least.
My issue isn't anywhere near as bad as yours I would say. If yours is turning on and off a lot them you may want to replace it. I notice mine turns off once a day for a few seconds but I'm sure it does it more and I just don't see it.

I've used my phone to tether a few times and noticed the cell signal drops now and again....there is an app but I can't remember the name..something like "connection stabalizer" that toggles airplane mode on and off when it detects a dead connection....it might do the trick.
I have never experienced any of my previous phones do that, so i will most likely be sending it back for an exchange from Amazon.

I have never experienced this either. Have you tried a factory reset yet? I may try that in a couple of days and see what that does for me.
Well see, before i took the latest update the problem existed.........then, after the latest update the issue still exists. So i don't think a factory reset will do it but i will before i actually mail it out.
I reset the phopne and installed a mobile network detect app that notifies me when the signal drops. we'll see what happens.
I have no job so I have the time to blow
I am having the same problem. I am losing the signal repeatedly. It goes to no service then comes on to two or three bars even when I am in the exact same location.
So far so good. 6 hours later and no signal loss yet. On another note, the reset fixed an issue I forgot to mention. when downloading from the play store the download would start and immediately get stuck at 66kb. I would have to start and stop the download two to five times before the app actually downloaded. I just finished installing all my apps without an issue.

I am having the same problem. I am losing the signal repeatedly. It goes to no service then comes on to two or three bars even when I am in the exact same location.

Borghi, so your WiFi is on when this occurs too huh?
I will lose signal when on WiFi with LTE enabled. Switch to WCDMA/GSM and it doesn't happen. Weird. Going to factory reset this weekend when my new SD card comes.

Wow so maybe this is a 100% Idol 3 manufacturing issue that demands for a recall.
Me returning the phone for another one is futile. I mean who doesn't want to keep their phone on LTE???
It might also just be a firmware issue.

True.....
It's been 28 hours and as care as I know I still have not have a dropped cell signal after the factory reset. If you have an issue will the cell radio try a factory reset first before returning it.

Mostly. Wi-Fi was off about 6 hours while I was sleeping. I'm using Network Signal Info Pro to tell me when I lose signal. I know it works cuz I turn on airplane mode and it notified me. I carry the phone around the house so I don't miss a notification. So far in 33 hours still no signal loss.
