I currently have an iphone 6S+, and its gotten to the point i hate it. I originally had it jailbroken etc and the support for it has just fallen off and now i cant do **** with it and its time to go, so my question is as a note 3 and 4 previous owner, will the note 5 do what i want? Ive heard a lot of contradictory information about it.
Can the 5s be rooted? I like stock appearence but debloated and the ability to use wifi hotspot because of my unlimited data plan.
Is there an SD slot? the non expandability of my ihone bothers me.
Or should i just wait till Fall and get the newest latest and greatest?

Seeing you want a SD card I would just wait. The Note 6/7 will be coming out in August so it's only about a month away. From the leaked specs it sounds like it's going to be a bumped up S7 with a slightly better processor, bigger battery and more ram. Along with a Note 5 I own the S7 edge and really like the camera and external SD. The Note 5 is a beautiful phone but I would wait a few weeks before you spend that kind of cash on a new phone. There is currently no root for either phone but you can disable any app with the paid version of Package Disabler pro (no PC required) or the Debloater tool witch is free but requires a PC. I also believe you can tether with FoxFi but I'm not 100% sure on that.
I to would wait for the next model. My Note 5 was fine until MM came out. I may revert back to the older software. No removable battery is a pain. I haven't had a memory problem but would still like to expand when needed. I have the 64 gig model.

It did at first for me. But ive grown out of the root, recovery and flashing rom days. It was fun and all until dev support stops. And the Rom stays forever on kitkat 4.4.2 and meanwhile the phone is now on lolipop 5.1 or marshmallow 6.0.1 and getting left behind.

Same here but I was on the other end too. I got tired of wasting the days making ROMs just for Verizon to kill root the next update. I love the Samsung phones so I got used to no root. At least package disabler works and we have themes.

No the only S7 Edge that is rootable is the Chinese version. It's not available in the U.S.A. It's still a great phone root or not. You can have free teathering without root, read post #2 again. Root would be better but it's looking pretty dismal with a Samsung device.

For sure wait! The Note 7 will be out in less than one month. The price on the Note 5 will drop once the Note 7 is released. So even if you want a Note 5, wait for the price drop.

Me too but my point was simply that this was a freak case due to the leak. We can't analogize anything they did with the S7 to the Note 5 because we don't have a signed engineering kernel for our device.
The fact that the S7 got rooted with a leaked signed engineering bootloader is no reason for us to have hope. We can't count on a Samsung employee leaking signed files like that, they are risking their job.
Rooting the S7 wasn't due to a dev finding an exploit; it was due to a Samsung employee leaking a file that they shouldn't have. Or worse, someone who wasn't a Samsung employee doing something illegal to obtain the file.

Actually, it is usually the opposite. The new device gets huge subsidies whereas the older devices stay at full price.
That having been said, it is pretty obvious to me that if you love the note series, and are into control of your phone, then the Note 4 Remains the best Android phone ever made for Verizon, and the best in the note series.
The list of benefits for the Note 4 is plethora: Root. Unlock Bootloader. Replaceable battery. SD card support. MHL. USB on-the-go. IR blaster. Great ROM support up to MM. Wireless charging option. Gorgeous screen. Incredibly durable build quality.
FYI: the first 8 benefits are not available on any other Verizon phone.
Given the fact that Samsung rolled out all the Snapdragon s7 and s7e with locked bootloaders, I have little to no hope for the note 7. What do you guys think about its chances of coming with an unlocked bootloader?

If you want a rooted samsung phone in the future you will all need to buy the international models.
Thats why I purchased the S7 EDGE G935F international model a few weeks ago. All the international samsung phones are very easily rooted and none of them have locked bootloaders.
And to top it off all the samsung international phone models come sim unlocked .

Crazy how there is not much talk about the Note 7 with it only about 2 weeks away. I am really mixed about getting it still since I know it is going to be locked. The only thing that is really holding me back at this point is not being able to use Viper. There are a couple of other things that would be nice to still be able to do but those aren't major. Android has come a long way and the need for a custom rom just isn't what it used to be. I really like the Note line and prefer to stay with it so I may just bit the bullet and go without root. Whether I get it at launch will also depend on the special offers they are giving out. I got the Year of Netflix and free VR with the S7 Edge before I returned it so if they have a simular offer, I will probably jump on it.

I was just thinking this same thing...i own my note 5 outright so i may just trade it in if there's a good deal...progress has been made with root on the s7's so I'm hopeful similar leaps are made...nonetheless, i have to say, my girls note 5 is bone stock unrooted and with few exceptions there's little that can't be done...for her nothing, and for me, well, I'm just finally learning to develop on Linux so i definitely want to keep SOME rootable device in my stable as well, but that's might end up meaning a second device (next nexus?) and swapping my sim around smh...it's just that usb3.0, ip68, 256gb storage and 6gb ram PLUS a true edge screen is almost too much to resist, root or not, plus there's always samsung pay while it's still 0x0...i see myself getting it, only question is when and will i also spent flagship money on a second device (OP3? nexus? Htc?- pretty much all are sd820...) until a good root method or unlocked bootloader becomes a reality....

I'm always with 2 phones, 1 is usually a nexus device, the note series have been my go to though. I'll likely get the N7 and do what I can do to it with in the confines of no super user. Nexus devices are so cheap, you can always pick up one for around $200, excluding the 6p. The devs here on XDA are top notch, so I'm always confident they'll come up with something.

Well a locked bootloader is a locked bootloader in most cases. The s7 exploit is really just a Samsung repair kernel that was leaked that's really not fit for prime time, unfortunately...
And even that is still limited in no custom recovery or roms, just stock debloat, xposed, viper/etc...

I wouldn't say can't, it can in fact happen and has. It just isn't easy. There are snapdragon devices that never got stable CM builds. Just in the case with the exynos, the odds aren't in their favor.
If I do get the Note 7, which I probably will, it will be with the knowledge that if most likely will never be unlocked. I have been running pure stock and not even rooted for a couple weeks now to see how unrooted life is. I have been rooted and running a custom rom for several years now. Like I said before, there are some cool features in custom roms but the need for them just isn't what it used to be. The only thing I am truly missing is Viper. So for me it comes down to the simple question of which is more important. What is more important, all of the new features of the new phone or the ability to use Viper.
I swore I wouldn't buy a locked phone and would move to the Nexus line but based on the rumors of the next Nexus phones, I am not thrilled with them. I just don't see anything that I would rather move to over the Note 7 based on what we know so far. That along with the fact that I am on the original Jump program so without needing to buy the phone outright, I need to pick from T-Mobiles selections.
A lot of the reasons to have root can be accomplished with apps so life without root isn't a huge deal for me anymore. I just wish there was a Viper alternative that can be used without root. Anyone know of one?
So as the title asks, anyone considering it? I have read that it will probably use the same snapdragon we have. If this turns out to be true do you think our current root method will work for the note 7?
http://www.sammobile.com/2016/07/11...r-has-been-officially-introduced-by-qualcomm/
Looks like it won't have the same processor.
I've planned on it since the day I traded my note 5 for my S7. Seems like it's been forever.
If they want to make a 5.1" Note 7 or a 5.1" edge, I'm game. If they want to make a S7 mini (QC 652+/4.5-4.9" 1080p AMOLED screen, similiar screen/body), I'm also game. Otherwise, the driving force of my owning the s6/s7 is that Samsung is the only Android maker with a US presence to have flagship phones that takes up less volume than the LG G2 since that phone's release (S6, S6e and S7).
I bought my S7 on T-Mobile's Jump On Demand just for that. Is it really going to be the Note 7 or the Note 6?
Not with a locked bootloader.
After this S7, I'm done with locked devices which probably means that unless Samsung changes, I'm done with Samsung.

If you have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 variant you won't be able to root at the moment. Only Exynos variants has root. We don't know how or when root will be possible on the Snapdragon units - if it's ever possible.

May i ask for what reason you want to root it? Almost all functions of previous root reasons are today integrated. And you will lose the precious warranty. I don't want to say rooting is useless. But there are from day to day less reasons to root.
I have unlocked S8+ coming from samsung.com and should be tomorrow, I would like root too, but with the price i paid for it, I can live with out root, Samsung had 100.00 so it 724.99, then I have my old Note 5 as trade-in so that`s another 300.00..... so heck 400.00 total off and I paid only 450.49 shipped so I can`t beat that price.

There is no bloatware free firmware that you can flash. When Verizon says unlocked by that they mean the sim card slots unlocked so you can use it with any carrier you choose.. You cannot flash nothing to the N5 with the locked bootloader.
I really appreciate you chiming in. I guess a bloatware free flash is wishful thinking. At this point and since my upgrade is in November I've given up hope on any chance of a root for the note5. And almost don't care anymore. My next phone may be the s8 or s8+. So far I don't see any review on the Note 8 that's swaying me towards another note. I'm almost thinking 7s iPhone series but probably won't.
Do you know if the Verizon s8 series has root?

I have the Verizon S8+ and yes it has root access!! I also just received my new Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and I'm messing with it testing the battery VS the S8+ because the Note 8 is 3,300 and the S8+ is 3,500 but the funny thing is the Note 8 lasted longer and I had them both doing the same exact thing brightness was 100% on both and both were playing a YouTube video and the first one to shut off was the S8+ so I was a bit shocked but then again the Note 8 has more ram and the firmware was perfected just for the Note 8 and battery longevity, so I'm going to keep the Note 8 for now.

Nice!! Well, I'm still leaning to a the S8 but I'll still see what the Pixel 2 is like. I like the thought of being bloat free. But with a rooted s8 or plus that could be a wash in favor for Samsung.
Thanks!
so this means you cannot flash an unlocked firmware on the N5, like you can on the S8+, to remove Verizon's bloatware and stuff?
