Note 5, or wait for next model? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note5

I currently have an iphone 6S+, and its gotten to the point i hate it. I originally had it jailbroken etc and the support for it has just fallen off and now i cant do **** with it and its time to go, so my question is as a note 3 and 4 previous owner, will the note 5 do what i want? Ive heard a lot of contradictory information about it.
Can the 5s be rooted? I like stock appearence but debloated and the ability to use wifi hotspot because of my unlimited data plan.
Is there an SD slot? the non expandability of my ihone bothers me.
Or should i just wait till Fall and get the newest latest and greatest?

Seeing you want a SD card I would just wait. The Note 6/7 will be coming out in August so it's only about a month away. From the leaked specs it sounds like it's going to be a bumped up S7 with a slightly better processor, bigger battery and more ram. Along with a Note 5 I own the S7 edge and really like the camera and external SD. The Note 5 is a beautiful phone but I would wait a few weeks before you spend that kind of cash on a new phone. There is currently no root for either phone but you can disable any app with the paid version of Package Disabler pro (no PC required) or the Debloater tool witch is free but requires a PC. I also believe you can tether with FoxFi but I'm not 100% sure on that.

I to would wait for the next model. My Note 5 was fine until MM came out. I may revert back to the older software. No removable battery is a pain. I haven't had a memory problem but would still like to expand when needed. I have the 64 gig model.

I agree. Wait until note 7 edge. It will be out in 2 months. You get waterptoof s7 edge phone with a stylus and SD card support. Im stuck with note 5 till next year and ill get the note 8 by then.

Foxfi works on my 5 even with the latest updates. Still not used to all the ads though. I've been rooted since my first Droid. Life ad-free was so ....so...free

Wait.
I have the Note 5 and there is no root for the Verizon version.

Ugh no root hurts my heart...
but deinitely sounds like its worth waiting. Is the S7 edge rootable? The stylus is a mute point for me, i jsut want a giant screen and rooting/free teathering abilities lol

It did at first for me. But ive grown out of the root, recovery and flashing rom days. It was fun and all until dev support stops. And the Rom stays forever on kitkat 4.4.2 and meanwhile the phone is now on lolipop 5.1 or marshmallow 6.0.1 and getting left behind.

Same here but I was on the other end too. I got tired of wasting the days making ROMs just for Verizon to kill root the next update. I love the Samsung phones so I got used to no root. At least package disabler works and we have themes.

No the only S7 Edge that is rootable is the Chinese version. It's not available in the U.S.A. It's still a great phone root or not. You can have free teathering without root, read post #2 again. Root would be better but it's looking pretty dismal with a Samsung device.

For sure wait! The Note 7 will be out in less than one month. The price on the Note 5 will drop once the Note 7 is released. So even if you want a Note 5, wait for the price drop.

Yeah but they got root because a Samsung employee leaked a signed engineering bootloader.

I'll take it any way I can get it. It's not perfect but at least the file system can be modded to ones preference and full system back ups can be done.

wait for note 7 , i`m sick of absence of expansion slot for my note 5 , also battery back up is not so good.

Me too but my point was simply that this was a freak case due to the leak. We can't analogize anything they did with the S7 to the Note 5 because we don't have a signed engineering kernel for our device.
The fact that the S7 got rooted with a leaked signed engineering bootloader is no reason for us to have hope. We can't count on a Samsung employee leaking signed files like that, they are risking their job.
Rooting the S7 wasn't due to a dev finding an exploit; it was due to a Samsung employee leaking a file that they shouldn't have. Or worse, someone who wasn't a Samsung employee doing something illegal to obtain the file.

Actually, it is usually the opposite. The new device gets huge subsidies whereas the older devices stay at full price.
That having been said, it is pretty obvious to me that if you love the note series, and are into control of your phone, then the Note 4 Remains the best Android phone ever made for Verizon, and the best in the note series.
The list of benefits for the Note 4 is plethora: Root. Unlock Bootloader. Replaceable battery. SD card support. MHL. USB on-the-go. IR blaster. Great ROM support up to MM. Wireless charging option. Gorgeous screen. Incredibly durable build quality.
FYI: the first 8 benefits are not available on any other Verizon phone.

AT&T Tab 4 8.0 Owners

Figured I'd stay a thread for those of us who have an AT&T Tab 4 SM-T337A variant. Anyone weeks have one? What are your thoughts? I'll probably post some in the coming days as I use it more.
I have the T-Mobile version, but it's pretty much the same. I am moving from an AT&T tab 3 7.0 and so far I am not sure if I'm impressed yet. One thing I have noticed is that there is not an ambient light sensor on this model. It's a small quirk, but something I feel should have been added. Overall build quality is ok, and it seems responsive to me, but I think once my case shows up I will be more inclined to use it as I normally do without worrying so much about scuffing it up.

The lack of an ambient light sensor was a real head scratcher for me too, especially because the Galaxy Tab 3 had one. I also noticed that they downgraded the camera. The Tab 3 8.0 had a 5 megapixel autofocus camera while the Tab 4 8.0 has a 3 megapixel fixed focus camera. Further, they seem to have gotten rid of the stereo speakers in favor of one mono speaker on the back. I don't get these decisions at all. I realize that the Tab 4's biggest upgrade over the Tab 3 is the processor, but did adding a quad core processor really make it so they had to skimp on the light sensor, speakers, and camera? If they needed to take something away, I'd have preferred they get rid of the IR blaster or vibrator, personally.
Sent from my Galaxy S5 using Tapatalk
Actually, I didn't have the vibrate function on the tab 3 and was didsappointed. I was happy to have one on the 4, but I have no idea why I would need it now. I would have rather seen that left out too. I'm really hoping to a root exploit soon so I can tinker with this one at least. I didn't really pay attention to the camera because I really don't use it. I really only use my tab for streaming music and poking around on the interwebs.
Sent from my SM-T337T using Tapatalk
Essentially, what Samsung said to us is "Here is the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0. It's $30 cheaper than last year's model, with a better processor and a vibrator, but we downgraded the speakers and camera and got rid of auto brightness."
This sounds absurd when you put it that way. I would have preferred "Here's the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0. It's $30 cheaper than last year's model, with a better processor, but we had to get rid of the IR blaster and continue to leave out a vibrator." To me, that sounds much more reasonable.

From what I read, the Tab line has been downgraded to make room for the pro series which had all the bells and whistles. I just picked my 8" model up yesterday. So far it does what I want just a bit laggy at times, hopefully something a recovery and kernel could fix.

LTE Tab 4 models have Kids Mode removed
I spoke to Samsung Telecommunications US headquarters this week out of frustration of not having the Kids Mode App on our two new AT&T LTE Samsung Tab 4 devices and have confirmed that all LTE models have had the Kids Mode feature removed from their devices. And, the most frustrating thing is actually on Samsung's own website for the individual, specific LTE models which lists the Kids Mode feature as a key selling point. And yes, the first thing people say is: "Have you checked for the latest updates (Android & Samsung.) And, the answer is yes. I have confirmed this removal with Samsung and notified them that this is indeed a huge problem. Maybe not so much for me or for you who may thrive off all things tech, but for the grandparent or parent buying this for their child with the sole purpose of using this key selling feature to help protect their child. Their frustration and discomfort in trying to use what they've been sold and not being able to will only push them away from Samsung or other Android devices. It is a disservice to both the Samsung and Android names as well as to the customer. And it makes us maybe reflect on what we can learn from apple (which pains me to say): when they advertise a feature, it does work on their devices especially on the new ones and even more so on a product listed to have the feature. It's both disappointing and embarrassing to see as both a Samsung and Android supporter.
And one more thing that pains me as an AT&T employee, which I am but not in mobility, that must be said!.. Samsung and AT&T have thought of our kids protection and replaced the Kids Mode with another app. FAMIGO!.. which is a PAID subscription of $4.99 a month to protect your Child!! THINKING of this even more gets me so infuriated!! What an absolute disservice and embarrassment!!
Can anyone get the Kids Mode AK ported from the WiFi version so we can use it on this device?

I am testing FlashFire now for compatibility, so far so good it has no problems updating SuperSU thru flashing a zip file action. unfortunately there is no OEM firmware other than the original NF4 firmware, I will be looking into a build from the NK2 system dump however, system dumps are notoriously buggy.
Please don't ask for ETA's don't PM me with questions, give me a couple weeks to iron out any inconsistencies and we will se what happens.

It's nice to find a thread for AT&T Tab 4 8.0 owners. Are all of you on AT&T? I got mine unlocked, and I'm planning to use mine with TMO. It already works for their paid plans, but it can't sign up for their 200mb free plan (apparently because this tablet is not in their eligible database). I'm toying with the idea of flashing a TMO ROM to see if that'll work, but I'm guessing it won't.

S6 edge rooted or note 5 stock??

Here's my dilemma.... I have a s6 edge rooted and running a custom Rom. My friend purchased a note 5 but wants to trade straight up because he really wants root and feels the note 5 is a little too big. What would you do in this situation? Both phones are black and Verizon 64gb. I'm so torn because I know the note 5 won't see root anytime in the near future

I never had the edge but I had the S6 with root and without. I can honestly say root did nothing performance wise for me, the phone worked great both ways. Yes I would prefer a rooted phone but with the debloat tool you can disable (hide) any app on the phone without root, foxfi works for tethering and themes are built in. If it's the bigger screen you want and don't mind loosing root it's a fair trade. Value wise I would say you are getting the better deal because the Note is worth more and it's newer.

You make some valid points. I think I'm going to stick with my rooted edge and here's why.
1. Adaway, I hate adds especially on certain apps.
2. Flashfire, I have the ability to flash roms. I'm running a custom Rom now that seriously increased the overall feel and speed of my phone.
3. I included the ram tweak which resolved the ram management issue.
4. I can flash custom themes!! Yes Samsung has a theme store, but it doesn't compete with akonda theme (yes that is spelled right)
5. My battery life is equal to the note 5 print screens I've seen posted on xda.
6. I really plan in buying the new nexus because I miss the dev community. Plus I love having a phone that works for any carrier 100%.
Don't get me wrong, if the note 5 for Verizon magically gets root I will buy the phone cash same day

It definitely sounds like the Note 5 isn't the ideal phone for you. It for sure won't satisfy the crack flasher in you lol. For me I'm happy where I am, between all the phones I've switched to lately and all the ROMs I made I burnt myself out for a while. Just this year I went through a bunch of phones. I'm right there with you bother lol, I've had this year alone note 4, note edge, nexus 6, iPhone 6 plus, and now s6 edge. I think by far the biggest selling point of any phone is the ability to use the phone on all the big U.S carriers. I've also been struggling with switching to T-Mobile. I have two lines with unlimited data for the wife and I with Verizon. I'm tired of this phone bill $200 a month is out of control.

Call customer service and tell them you are going to switch. I did and I ended up getting $30.00 off my monthly bill yesterday and when my three contracts run out soon it will be an additional $25.00 off every month per line. If you are not on it it's the customer loyalty plan. I'm only on a 4 gig plan but we hardly use one so it's plenty for us. Either way i would call them I was at $235 or so every month. I did look into T-Mobile but it isn't worth it. After the equipment charges for the new phones and insurance the savings would have only been $10 a month and inferior coverage. If you own your own phones and get good service with them it might be worth it. Cricket was a good option for me too but Verizon beat their price.

Thanks for sharing those reasons. I have been struggling with the same question ... S6 Edge or the Note 5. Was leaning towards the Note 5 because of the 4GB of system RAM and S-Pen, but I am concerned about the RAM management issues so many people have reported. Being as locked down as the VZW version is, there is no way to fix the issue without waiting for Samsung to fix it. The extra RAM becomes pointless if you can take advantage of it.
I didn't realize that you could run custom ROMs on the Verizon S6 Edge. I knew there was root but didn't realize you could flash a recovery and install custom ROMs. That would be a big reason to go for the S6 Edge in my opinion. Especially since Root access would let me fix the Ram issues as you have done. Would you happen to have a link to the thread that showed you how to install the custom ROMs for the S6 Edge? Thanks!

So there's a choir items to address.
1. You have to be on firmware oe2 or lower in order to root. You will never be able to upgrade your firmware or root will be lost, probably forever...
2. You can find the information in the Verizon s6 edge development thread.
3. I ended up trading for the note 5 because it's worth more in eBay right now, bigger screen, spen, and the bottomline it's running newer firmware.
Since Foxfi and adguard work extremely well the note 5 will hold me over until the nexus huawei comes available. I'm done with lock bootloaders and receiving slow updates

No it appears the extra gig of ram help deal with that issue.

How does locked BL effect you?

Well since there is to be no root or recovery we are left with discussion and mods/apps which do not require root.
My question to the group is how does this phone being locked down effect you. Many say they will wait and hope, others saying returning/selling ASAP and still others are saying this phone doesn't need it.
As far as how it effects me? Not a whole lot, Android has come a long way and this phone is super solid. I feel that this version of Touchwiz is non intrusive even less so than the Note 5 which barely lasted a month. I do appreciate root, and when I can, I always root. For me the biggest problem is Samsung's abhorrent updating. Sure we get special treatment over older still supported devices but let's keep it real Samsung sucks. After a year Samsung magically becomes even slower. I also greatly appreciate a stock Google experience. I will probably sell this bad boy. Once my bogo comes through
I currently have Nexus 5x and Nexus 6. And am undecided as to which one I will keep although leaning towards Nexus 6. I may end up keeping s7 edge until Nexus 2016 comes out, but that option is looking unlikely
If I had known ahead of time the S7 bootloader was locked I would have bought the wife and I Nexus 6 devices and then gone to Project FI
yea sux when i found this out. but remember AT&T bootloaders were always locked down well for the most part and DEVs have always found a way to do it or work around it. I know u guys remember The days of the Loki patches rainbow recoveries etc..lol . phone has only been out a week give it some time fellas have faith in our DEVs they are the BEAST! IT WILL HAPPEN dont ask me how i just know these guys never disappoint!
in the mean time if u haven't already check this out these dudes are sweet they have instructions for non rooted requires a $2 app but worth it for now I confirm they work on my S7, cheers

I waited months for my LG G4 to get root and a bootloader unlock. Finally got cm13 and just a short time later upgraded to the S7... I miss cm13, but it'll just take some time and it'll be back on my phone.
How does it effect me, we'll it means that I don't actually own my $800. Pocket computer. I am not the administrator so my info can be easily stolen and the device can be crippled by limiting updates. It's basically a $800. Device that will be current for 4 months. Garbage.

For myself, i wish i could just remove bloat. Speed and function is rather quick. Being able to load 3rd party launchers is the only benefit to UI changes..eh...I like the water proof feature. ..

Mine's going back tomorrow, unless there's some news. I figure that I can just re-purchase it once/if BL is unlocked, or check out the G5.
Going to do the jump to the g5 most likely.. I didnt have to root my g4 to get the software how I like it. There is just too much samsung integration here to get around it all without having lots of minor annoyances (no major ones, just lots of little **** I dont like).
Locked BL affects me moderately. I prefer lower DPI so without xposed/app settings, the camera/video calls aren't full screen. I also lose the ability to customize the phone (xposed/wanam). I have a harder time transferring apps (no Titanium Backup). I miss out on the whole reason for liking Snapdragon over exynos (kernels, CM). I never considered returning the phone (t-mobile's BOGO free + 2 yr netflix + $60 + wireless chargers from Samsung Pay + 2 GearVR was a ridiculous deal). I have considered selling/swapping for a 930F (all it would take is VOLTE + native video dialing and I'd swap immediately).
Just got my s7 today . . Retired my note 3 after years of use .... s7 is awsome right out the box ... very fast battery is great ... happy with the purchase

Pretty much using Nexus 6 on project Fi. It's interesting not using as much data but I do like the service. Going between sprint and T-Mobile has been nice. I have no real desire to go to 6p now. I am really hoping that Google will release another 6 inch phone soon. If it's only 5.5 I will be disappointed but will still probably get the next Nexus
My Nexus 6 is unrooted, I just know Samsung won't get Android N until the Note 6 is released

Will Locked Bootloader/No Root be the Norm moving forward for Samsung and T-Mobile ?

Hello guys I just wanted to get a better feel of how everyone else feels right now and in particular to the Galaxy S7 as well as s7 Edge on T-Mobile having a locked bootloader making root extremely difficult to get if not impossible. This was upsetting to me not because I wanted the S7 and S7 Edge but because this set a precedent for the Note 6 which is not yet released. I started my Journey with a Galaxy Note 2 and loved them ever since. I have very large hands so I definitely needed a large phone and I really quite liked the size and features. I then got the Note 4 and was certainly happy with it for over a year. I usually only hold onto phones for a short while but that phone did pretty much everything for me so I held onto it a while. Samsung announced the Note 5 and I decided to pass due to no more SD Card so I now needed to opt for at least 64gb and no IR blaster. So I decided I wouldn’t be getting that and would look at other options. I began my hunt and ultimately one of the few phones that met my standards was the Nexus 6P since it had a 5.7-inch screen which was Amoled and had a very good camera and I decided to try out stock Android since everyone always raves of its speed and updates. Plus, root on the 6P would be easy.
Anyway the 6P has been doing fine but the battery does leave a lot to be desired (I feel touchwiz does very well with its battery optimizations). Camera is also slightly better due to speed and manual controls as well as screen brightness. The next phone on my radar is the Note 6 but with the no root precedent I’m fairly concerned. To sum it up I feel we don’t have many 5.7 inch or larger phone options out there and was wondering what devices will you guys be looking at as Note competitors especially if the new Note 6 from, T-Mobile cant be rooted? It seems manufacturers like LG and HTC are not really coming out with Note competitors and if they do they are basterdized in some fashion (like lower specs and cameras). Just makes you wonder if they are not interested in the market.
Well, from what I know lg is doing seem. V10 just got an update that apparently locked down the phone. Can't even go down to lollipop if you took the MM update...I will say you should hold onto that nexus, rest of the flashaholics and root lovers will join you soon. Lol
But to answer original post, yes that is now the norm going forward.
Gotta see t-mobile Samsung devices locked up one more time to tell.

This will be really sad if so. Nexus devices are fine but sometimes dont bring all the best features. If the phone is less than 5.7 inches and no Amoled its a non start for me. Liked the HTC 10 but 5.2 inch screen is no go for me lol.

Will Verizon Note 5 ever get Nougat update?

Just wondering as I see Android O is on the horizon already.

I say we have a bet and see who gets closest wins. No money, only a gentleman/woman's bet and the winner gets the satisfaction that they were correct.
I will say this Friday, 3.31.2017 it will start to roll out to us.
Yes, the Note 5 is definitely getting the Android 7 update. It has already started rolling out in some parts of the world. See:
https://www.sammobile.com/2017/03/23/galaxy-note-5-nougat-update-is-now-out-in-these-countries/
Back in Mid-February, the Note 5 with android 7 received WiFi Certification for ATT, Sprint, and Verizon. See:
https://www.sammobile.com/2017/02/1...-receives-wi-fi-certification-running-nougat/
On the other hand, the update started rolling out on the S6 which is essentially the same internals as the Note 5 about three weeks ago and still has not hit the US. But its definitely coming. My prediction: About 4 more weeks. But I think we will have a pretty good idea when the update for the S6 hits. Its initial release was about two weeks prior to the initial Note 5 release. So when we see an update for the S6, the Note 5 should be about two weeks from then.
EDIT: More evidence. This is for the SM-920C while ours is the SM-920V but it does show that the update is rolling out: https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-N920C/
I think it will be in the middle or end of April ( 04.10.2017)
I speculate June of 2017.. Lol, that's if they ever stop messing with it..
And yes, I also have been looking and hitting update since seeing the WiFi certification.. But who knows with them.. And then, hopefully, they won't mess with it, or strip out key features, since they do enjoy doing that also..

My bet is on June as well, based on the global release of Nougat for the S7, vs the Verizon Release.
I'm eager to see what Nougat will bring to the note 5. Unless the note 8 impresses me later this summer, I'll be sticking with the note 5.

I don't think the S8 is impressive unfortunately.. It's only got a 3,000mah battery and if you want 3,500mah you have the S8 Plus.. it's only got 4GB ram which I don't think is enough especially for future updates and apps.. I definitely don't like the fingerprint scanner being on the back!! I'm pretty sure I'll be sticking with my S7 and Note 5..

Nope, never coming back! Samsung won't want anything to do with the "7"!! It'll probably jinx the 8 if they decided to call it 7 again. Lol
I for one am NOT eager to put another update on this phone. I saw this with my Note 2, my Thunderbolt and my Droid X. Which each OS update, came major slow downs to the overall system. Planned obsolescence that people are eager to do to themselves. No freaking thank you. The new update won't do anything positive for me, we're not in the 2.2 days of Android anymore. They can keep their crappy downgrades that make the phone sluggish and bogged down.

You mean they send crappy firmware "downgrades" out right about when they put a new phone out because they purposely cause your phone to get all sluggish and slow thereby trying to make you think it's a good idea to buy their new phone? That's why I don't bother with their updates and the other thing is if it ain't broke..... You get it lol..
I love the Nougat update on my S7 Edge. I keep powering on my Note5 in hope of having a software update. My battery life went from about 1.5 hrs of screentime on my S7 to 4. I bet I could get more then that if I wasn't outside so much.

The S7 / Edge wasn't that great of a phone (at least, it was no better than a Note 5)..... I don't get what people love about it. The screen was too small for what I wanted, and the curvature of the Edge just felt awkward to hold. The only benefit was a MicroSD slot for additional storage. When I had to turn in my Note 7 I was almost offended by the offers to go with an S7 (which has the same hardware as the Note 5 so it's really dated for such a major f up) instead of future credit towards a new flagship. Now the Note 5 gets security updates that screw with both the proximity sensor and screen rotation, and it feels like no one cares that is broken a couple times a week until you reboot. I hope the Nougat update fixes it, but by that time I might have an S8 so it will be a moot point except for resale opportunity.

I couldn't agree more about the 7. I never understood that desire for them to do that..
.I haven't faced the rotation issue on my unit, but like you, I cried when I had to turn in my 7..it was an awesome phone . I really am hoping the update brings some of that feel back with the 5.. I'm really must waiting up in arms for the update.. Because it's needed on this device..
