[GUIDE] Convert demo phone to retail - HTC One A9

DISCLAIMER
I take no responsibility for whatever happens to your phone. Do this at your own risk.
Introduction
So I got an A9 off ebay listed as 32GB/3GB saying in the description that it has demo mode enabled and it is being sold for parts. What the heck, I had to give it a try. It turned out to be the 16GB model sold in the EU and not in the US. Got a partial refund though. Anyway cut to the chase. Fortunately HTC Demo phones have radio enabled.
We used to think that demo mode is being triggered by the CID HTC__002 and by changing it demo would be gone. Well that's not the case. There is a hidden partition or visible, I haven't looked about it, which installs the demo application. Reflashing same version RUU won't do much since some partitions are being bypassed. Only firmware targeted for branded phones with the same MID will do the job.
Requirements
Root (check http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-a9/development/root-htc-a9-t3244141)
S-OFF (checkhttp://theroot.ninja)
Steps
Step 1
Gain root
Step 2
Get S-OFF
Step 3
Download an RUU zip different than the version your phone has installed. For example if your phone run on 1.10.401.7 then download 1.10.206.7 ruu zip.
Step 4
Change your CID to match one .of the CIDs listed for the ROM you have downloaded. E.g change HTC__001 to O2___001
Step 5
Rename the ruu zip to 2PQ9IMG.zip and place it in your SDCard.
Step 6
Reboot into download mode, it will ask you to start the update process. Press volume up to accept and when its done press power button to shut down the phone. When you reboot your phone you will have a fully working phone.
Optional
If you dont want to stuck with a branded phone you can always flash the original RUU, demo mode will be gone since the partition has been erased before.

Don't suppose it can be done without S-OFF? I know its only $25 (and I've paid it for many phones in the past) but since I won't be keeping this phone, I don't want to pay anything for it.
I now have unlocked bootloader and root, any ideas if I can remove whatever script is reinstalling demo mode and factory reset without changing CID?

Look for demoflo.apk and remove it from the system folder. You should be ok. But forget about OTA unless a custom rom appears.
You could also try the pm disable command and disable the demoflo package
Demo is being triggered by something inside a certain partition. Didn't have time to look for it but flashing an RUU with different partitions did the trick. Flashing same version partition didn't not since lots of them were identical therefore they were skipped.

Technically incorrect squire, it is triggered by HTC_002 as this is the HTC demo CID.
You actually need to s-off fastboot oem writecid HTC__001, reboot to bootloader then fastboot oem writecid HTC_001 again, re-lock and flash a generic HTC RUU.
The BCID is overwritten on the 2nd CID change (backup cid).
If you only change the cid once, BCID will take priority and trigger demo mode.
My last 5 HTC devices including my current device were Demo handsets as I get them through work.
Hope this makes things a little clearer.

I tried that I think and the demo mode was still there.
Then I flashed the O2 UK branded RUU and the demo was gone. After that I flashed again the EU RUU.

Sounds like the 2nd CID change attempt failed in that case, the change to 02 then back to HTC would mean your BCID will be either the same as the previous change as in HTC or 02 and your CID will now be HTC as you were able to flash the HTC RUU.
In the last 10 months I have converted 42 HTC Demo devices stock generic HTC__001 devices, I can say 100% that the double write method does the trick..
Just my 2c, as yours seems a very lengthy process.
Thanks

No reason to doubt you! Thanks for the tip!

Thanks guys, so to clarify its not possible to fully 'undemo' the phone without S-OFF?

Without s-off you can root the phone and use and to pm disable the demoflo package.

Hi, can I ask how did you S-OFF all those phones ?
I mean what method do you use to S-OFF them.
Thanks

Thank you for your quick response.
Do you have any experience about XTC2Clip to S-OFF HTC phones ?
Does it really work how they say? If so wouldn't be cheaper to use XTC2Clip, instead of Sunshine ?
Also, since you are developer, have you ever inspected what is triggering this demo apk and some other settings (Like screen lock disables, Developer mode stays as disabled)
I noticed once Screen Lock options are enabled in the initial power on, but soon DEMO app is active they turned grey.
But sometimes even though Demo app is disabled (I removed from system) screen lock options still greyed out.
I am really wondering how this DEMO things works,
I was hoping to see something in "init.rc" but it was disappointment

I cant seem to turn the USB debugging on as its grayed out in my demo HTC 10 phone, any idea how to make it work so that I can root it. I have already S-Unlocked it and the Build Number is 1.30.401.1.8.0_g CL738269 release-keys.

I don't know if it works for you but worked for me once.
If you factory reset it, quickly pass the initial questions and goto Settings and activate the USB Debugging, because DEMO starts a bit late on the first start-up.
I managed like this once. Hope works for you too.

That's the way I did it as well. After factory reset and initial boot you have a minute before demo mode kicks in. Head into developer options, check the oem unlock option and USB debugging. Then you are good to go, unlock bootloader, root and run sunshine to gain s-off, change cid and flash ruu to be stock

If you are s-off then change your cid to HTC__001.
Fastboot oem writecid HTC__001
Issue this twice and then perform a factory reset. You should be good

I did change the CID now even if i quickly enable all options in Developer options and flash a new ruu the demo thing appears again and disables all the major settings in the phone like screen timed our camera settings and stuff. Is there a way around to kill the demo for ever or just remove it for ever.

[Q] Is is possible to go back to 100% stock?

As of right now, I'm on 1.85RUU Unlocked and Rooted, so when in HBOOT, it shows **TAMPERED** and **UNLOCKED** I have relocked and unlocked the bootloader and when that happens, I only get **RELOCKED**.
My question to you all is if I had to return the phone for warranty purposes or if I chose to wait for the GSIII, would it be possible to show **LOCKED** and remove the **TAMPERED** and make it look like the first boot all over again, like no one had ever touched it?
Thanks in advance!
PS: Sorry if this is a basic question, but I have googled and everything and have not been able to find an answer.
You can get rid of tampered by flashing the 1.85 ruu but it will always say relocked

What if we achieve S-OFF? Can we then edit it to just say **LOCKED**?
Your guess is as good as mine
For warranty it doesn't matter if it says "locked" "relocked" "tampered" or what ever.
When you unlocked your bootloader you sent a file to HTC witch identifies your device with imei aso.
So they will know that your device was unlocked even if it says "locked".
One look in their database and they will see when, where and who unlocked the device.

So did I basically screw myself out of being able to return the phone to FRY's Electronics and waiting for say.. the GSIII?
You can try it. If you're lucky and they don't look in the bootloader it could work.

I still have 13 days left to return the phone for "buyers remorse" But I'm not sure if that'll fly with them. What's your take?
To be honest I doubt they'll look. Most employees don't know how how to get into fast boot to check the status. They're not getting payed enough to care that much. Just be friendly and try to distract them to get their mind off of it. I know a couple people at local ATT stores that wouldn't even check.

About the bootloader and root.

I've just purchased the phone and the massive amount of bloatware, lack of adaway and the useless bixby button instantly made me want to root. However I have a couple of issues.
First off, I don't even know if my bootloader is unlocked. I tried the phone dial technique and the fastboot technique and both of them did nothing. I also tried looking in the devs option for a "oem unlock" option, but it appears to be missing from my device. So, how do I check if my bootloader is unlocked?
Second off, I have the snapdragon variant, which means no twrp for me for now. However I did see that cf-auto-root supports my device, so that's some good news. I haven't been in touch with the android community for quite a while now, but I did see that a better (apparently), open-source alternative exist to supersu : Magisk (I'm particularly interested in the "hide root" feature). Can I install Magisk even after rooting with cf_auto_root (which installs supersu iirc)?
Thank you for your time.
Sorry, but cf-auto-root does not support the Snapdragon variant sadly.
http://imgur.com/HiYRXIB
I may be wrong, but I think it is supported.
It requires an unlocked bootloader or a phone capable of accepting fastboot oem unlock / fastboot flashing unlock. I wish I were wrong, trust me..
Oh that's too bad. How do I know if my bootloader is unlocked though?
I would do a little reading here as this has been discussed numerous times. Unfortunately, you need an unlocked bootloader to use any of the root tools out there. All of these sites have a disclaimer noted regarding not working with a locked bootloader. So sit back and grab a beer...may be a while until we see root...if at all.
If you have a snapdragon...its locked.
Hey guys thanks for the thread.
I'm in the same boat here, Snapdragon version Galaxy S8 in Canada. If anybody knows or hears anything about a way to unlock the bootloader in the future so we can get all this Samsung garbage off our phones that wouldn't be amazing.
Thanks guys

That was the command to unlock the bootloader, to see if it's unlocked you can try this:
Step 1 : Open your device’s dialer (App where you enter telephone numbers to call someone).
Step 2 : Dial the below code, it will automatically open a new windows. (if it doesn’t opens anything then use the second method).
1. *#*#7378423#*#*
Step 3 : Now in that window go to Service Info >> Configuration, and see if there is :
1. Bootloader unlock allowed - Yes >> This means that your Bootloader is Locked
2. Bootloader Unlocked - Yes >> This means that your Bootloader is unlocked
If this doesn't work you can try this:
Step 1 : Download and install adb & fastboot package & drivers in your system (Google it for your device).
Step 2 : After successful installation of adb & fastboot, connect your device to your PC via USB cable in fastboot mode.
Step 3 : Now open the folder where your adb & fastboot package is extracted, press Shift key on your keyboard and right click in the folder and select “Open command prompt here“.
Step 4 : It will open a Command Prompt window.
Step 5 : Type the following command to check if the device was detected in fastboot mode.
fastboot devices
Step 6 : if you don’t get device it or anything it means that the drivers weren’t correctly installed or the device wasn’t connected properly, if this happens try reinstalling your drivers.
Step 7 : Next run the following command to check the status of your device’s bootloader.
fastboot oem device-info

Hey all.
Demo phones are being sold with a good discount at the moment so I've been wondering is there a working solution for removing demo mode/soft on U11?
I think it can be disabled under developer options.

I'm puzzled now. I had two demo phones, and on the first one I installed TWRP, rooted it, flashed some custom ROMs, that did remove 2 demo apps, but I wanted a clean stock on it, so in the end I went with Sunshine, SuperCID and flashed the latest RUU. All fine, no demo mode.
The second one I rooted, changed CID, flashed the latest RUU, but the demo mode is always there, unless I remove those apps with TiBackup.
The only difference in procedures between the first and the second one was flashing 2 custom ROMs and Oreo radios.
Am I missing something here? Why does the demo mode on the second one refuses to die?

Hi Mate, just need your help because I am about to get a HTC U11 Telstra branded Demo which has Demo App pre installed also on it,
will I need to Root and unlock bootloader to do what you did ? or I can go ahead and try it without Rooting or unlocking bootloader?
so its as easy as just putting code in, getting to secret settings then turn off house keeping and factory reset from the secret menu? or do I need to enter bootloader ?
Thanks heaps Mate, thought id reply to your message as I am in the same position as you with a HTC U11 Telstra Demo.

How can i relock the bootloader on BKL-L09?

Hello dear forum members,
i have a Honor View 10 BKL-L09 on 8.0.0.140(C432).
I unlocked the bootloader by using the unlock code from Huawei/Honor, and then i flashed different custom roms (just the system.img, since it is a project treble device).
I have flashed no custom recovery and whatsoever. Just the system.img.
Luckily i dumped/saved the stock system.img before i flashed custom roms.
Now i am back on stock system.img, everything except AI-features and equalizer/Histen-sound effects is working fine.
Now all i want to do is get rid of the security alert screen on boot-up, "your device has been unlocked and can not be trusted..."
Is that possible? If so, is it possible to get the AI stuff and sound effects/equalizer working again?
Any helpful answer is much appreciated.
Thanks in advance and greetings from Germany
I found the solution myself by using the tool from this thread DD :
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/tool-tool-one-driversunlocktwrpfactory-t3358711
Its for numerous devices, also for Honor View 10.
To relock the bootloader, the tool asks you to enter the original/official unlock code that i got from Huawei/Honor.
I did that and it worked fine.
Device got factory reset and does not show the warning screen anymore.
Though in fastboot mode it shows "relocked", but i dont care about that.
AI-features and equalizer/histen sound effects also working again.
My phone is bootloader unlocked , and rooted... I can use sound effects and AI... Why they were not working in your case?

Its for numerous devices, also for Honor View 10.
To relock the bootloader, the tool asks you to enter the original/official unlock code that i got from Huawei/Honor.
I did that and it worked fine.
Device got factory reset and does not show the warning screen anymore.
Though in fastboot mode it shows "relocked", but i dont care about that.
AI-features and equalizer/histen sound effects also working again.

What if you don't have the unlock code? I have lost it since it's only displayed in web page instead of sending it in a mail.
@theorlyowl Pls can you share the system image of you stock rom I was not mistakenly haven't backed up my stock. I'm even stuck to boot after relock. So please it will be helpful if you share your stock image.
Dload the full firmware. It will be full stock with locked bootloader (not relocked but locked).

Try doing the dload once and see if it helps, if not, may be you can download the full firmware in erecovery and see if it fetches a package, install and done. If not let me know, i may try one more option which should work as well

Huawei Mate 20X bootloader unlock procedure (must have a bootloader unlock code)

Once you have got your unlock code, Note it or take screenshot and save it somewhere.
How to unlock? All your data will be wiped during unlock.
1)Go to settings>about phone and tap 7 times on build number to enable developer options.
New devices require OEM unlock in developer options (Chinese models don’t have oem unlock)
2)Download Minimal ADB and Fastboot ,after installation, launch it by double clicking “MAF32.exe” inside C:/Program Files (x86)/Minimal ADB and Fastboot.
3)Enable USB debugging in developer options ( on some models you also need to enable oem unlock)
4)Connect your phone with PC & type “adb devices” your phone will ask for permission, check always allow from this pc & grant permission.
5)Then type following command
adb reboot-bootloader
6)if this command doesn’t work, then disconnect USB cable switch off phone , hold volume down button and connect with pc, your phone should enter fastboot mode.Let the window install drivers, then type
fastboot oem unlock xxxxxxxxxxxxx <----your unlock code here
7)(xxxxxx is your unlock code) and your phone will be unlocked (new models require you to select yes by using volume up button)
mod edit - links to paid services removed

Am I reading you right? Where is the OEM unlock in the L29 dev options?
What can you do with unlocked bootloader and no root. Eventually install TWRP. But what else?

Huawei disabled it in the L29. We may never be able to unlock it.
If I can't get root in the phone, I think I will sell it and use the China version if root is available for it.
Worked as advertised.
Has anyone tried relocking the bootloader? I've tried same methods with bootloader oem relock or lock with no success. Seems we can't lock the bootloader again.
I get a "failed remote root type is risk"

But what's the point? There is no root

Why is everyone seeking the international L29 version vs the China version? China version is less expensive anyways I don't understand why this forum seeks the L29 version
Please help. I cannot slide the "enable OEM unlock" its greyed out. Does that mean i cannot unlock bootloader at all? I am having a EVR-L29. Is there any workaround? i just want to install Magisk.

The real point is that I had to reset to get my OTA and face unlock working again after I adb removed a couple too many services.
Since I was resetting might as well unlock now vs later.
I would be happy if the voice (for Google assistant), telsa unread notifications, and the accessibility settings would stick and not revert intermittently to off or Chinese only services.

Huge difference between L29 and China version if you aren't Chinese. As explained in multiple threads, the China version has China specific stuff that you can not change possibly without root. L29 has everything people expect a Google phone to have but may lack root forever which limits being able to do custom things. Catch 22 paradox.

Oh no.. Does that mean non Chinese version cannot be unlocked forever? Is it going to be useless?
This is making me wonder. In the event you could rebrand from AL00 to L29, is it quite possible that you cannot go back to AL00?
nvm...................
Thanks for this guide.
I know this is a silly question but I have an Apple laptop (my impulse purchase of a Chinese Mate 20 x was my first step away from the Apple ball and chain). Do I have to have a windows machine to run the unlocking software?

Noob here. I have a Huawei Mate 20x 5G (Evr-an00). This is the Chinese version and has no OEM unlock option in developer mode. It's Sim unlocked, but when it's placed in fastboot mode it states locked on the bottom in green. I'm assuming that the bootloader is locked. Can my variant bootloader be unlocked? Wanting root badly. Thank you- any advice would be appreciated.
