As of right now, I'm on 1.85RUU Unlocked and Rooted, so when in HBOOT, it shows **TAMPERED** and **UNLOCKED** I have relocked and unlocked the bootloader and when that happens, I only get **RELOCKED**.
My question to you all is if I had to return the phone for warranty purposes or if I chose to wait for the GSIII, would it be possible to show **LOCKED** and remove the **TAMPERED** and make it look like the first boot all over again, like no one had ever touched it?
Thanks in advance!
PS: Sorry if this is a basic question, but I have googled and everything and have not been able to find an answer.
You can get rid of tampered by flashing the 1.85 ruu but it will always say relocked

What if we achieve S-OFF? Can we then edit it to just say **LOCKED**?
Your guess is as good as mine
For warranty it doesn't matter if it says "locked" "relocked" "tampered" or what ever.
When you unlocked your bootloader you sent a file to HTC witch identifies your device with imei aso.
So they will know that your device was unlocked even if it says "locked".
One look in their database and they will see when, where and who unlocked the device.

So did I basically screw myself out of being able to return the phone to FRY's Electronics and waiting for say.. the GSIII?
You can try it. If you're lucky and they don't look in the bootloader it could work.

I still have 13 days left to return the phone for "buyers remorse" But I'm not sure if that'll fly with them. What's your take?
To be honest I doubt they'll look. Most employees don't know how how to get into fast boot to check the status. They're not getting payed enough to care that much. Just be friendly and try to distract them to get their mind off of it. I know a couple people at local ATT stores that wouldn't even check.

Hey guys, I just got the awesome One S and looking to root it asap. Is there a root method that doesn't give you the TAMPERED notice in case I need to replace the phone?

NO,
You need to flash stock image, bootloader will stay unlocked. That should not be an issue.
The stock images are floating around sub-forum, maybe just do a search/google. Or someone will give you a link
Hmm so basically what you're saying is that I can return/replace the phone as long as I flash back to stock even if the bootloader is unlocked? I want to be sure before I go flash happy on it.

nothing is for sure
but htc allows bootloader unlock, would think if it is a hardware issue, it wouldn't be a problem
never count on it though
No doubt, I figured as much too. Thanks rugmankc, I'll wait a little longer then.

The tampering message comes up no matter what. No matter if your boot loader is unlocked. It's the unlock unlock bootloadet message parts that you need to worry about. If I'm not mistaken there a relock command code to relock it. Just fellow the unlock bootloader directions but at the end change the unlock command to the relock command.

But from what I've read, even if you relock it, it still says "Relocked" as opposed to "Locked". Is that correct?

I did the Super CID trick, and now it says ****Tampered**** on the top of my bootloader. The only thing left now is to unlock my bootloader so I can install some ROMs. I just want to know if there is a way to restore a locked bootloader and remove the ****Tampered**** mark on my bootloader, just in case I need to make use of the warrenty. If that's not possible, then does AT&T or HTC refuse phones that are tampered with?
Tampered goes away when you flash a ruu, and once you unlock it would always say relocked not locked, most of the time the.company never checks this.

Sounds like I have nothing to worry about then. Thanks!
Also, the tampered flag is actually referring to you having root.
red text
Is there anyway to remove the red text on the boot up screen when I power up my phone? Is that caused by unlocked bootloader?

Actually it's not just referring to root, it applies changing any factory .img, or files in the system partition also, because if you do a fresh RUU and unlock the bootloader then fastboot flash a recovery.img then try booting to recovery it will put the ***tampered*** sign at the top aswell without rooting it

So my One X has been having hardware problems and I need to take it to AT&T to get it exchanged. In the case they're able to turn it on, I don't want them to be able to see "relocked" and "s-off" from the bootloader. Is there any way to remove that?

A decent number of people here have turned their phones in for warranty service, with the phone RELOCKED (before we had S-off, it couldn't be changed to LOCKED), SuperCID, etc. and did not have any issues. I think a few people have even sent in their phones running CM10 and other custom ROMs, and still got warranty replacements.
As long as its AT&T, and you don't go direct to HTC (who are known to be much more strict), it should be fine. If you want to change the flags back to stock "just to be safe", by all means do so. But don't kill yourself over it, as it likely won't matter in the end. I have yet to hear of a single report of AT&T denying warranty service due to unlocked bootloader, SuperCID, etc.
AT&T takes a loose attitude about returns because their goal is to keep you as a customer. The phones are secondary. This is why you can get a free upgrade if you threaten to cancel under certain circumstances. They're certainly not going to risk losing you over a warranty return, not when they can restore your old phone and sell it as a refurb for a bit less. The loss to them is minor compared to keeping your account.
Before anyone sets the hounds on me, I ask this question with a massive grain of salt. I had to send my original HOXL back to ATT (warranty) and my new one is on JB. I'm assuming that they reset the CID and relocked the BL when they installed JB on this unit and then packaged it to be sent out as a refurb.
Since it is tampered and locked, would the only way to unlock this be to go on a wild goose hunt and find the person that owned this device last and get the unlock code bin file from them?
I would try to go onto HTCdev and type in my token identifier but I have the feeling that ATT would have reset the CID when they reflashed their official JB.
Thoughts? Should I give up hope? lol

If you can somehow get the unlock code bin then you should be OK. However, I doubt you will get that. It is weird that they sent you a phone that was void by warranty though.

well if he had that unlock_code.bin, could he possibly still unlock the bootloader? it was tampered with, so SOMETHING happened
Ya he originally was rooted and unlocked so the tampered will stay there even if you ruu unless you change it with being s off. I'm thinking that if they would of pushed newest update to your phn it would have bricked it. Just check your version and as long as its not the lastest go about unlocking /rooting as you would normally. If its the newest version its write protected so it just won't work, it wouldn't brick phone

Sorry to hijack the thread but is there any way to unlock bootloader without going through the htcdev method? I believe that the warranty is voided if i unlock my bootloader and the support will not entertain any hardware damage (not caused by me) which is why i wanted to unlock without using htcdev. Any info is appreciated, thanks!

There isn't at least for now. And in any case until there is s-off even if there was other way it will show as relocked and modified after you lock it again.
there's no sunshine in the sky for now, but warranty is not voided in most countries/cases anyway.

I got the same response from HTC Czech Republic: unlocking the bootloader would instantly void my warranty, plus they said that warranty-keeping bootloader unlock is possible only in that one special case for US customers, the rest of the world voids their warranty by doing so :/
Rant on the side: I truly despise not being allowed to get root privileges without voiding the warranty - it is MY device, yet I can't control the system. I want to do MY own backups, control (or inspect) the data apps save to MY phone, and control the configuration of MY system. I really hate being locked out from even such basic configurations as the hosts file is - I'm effectively barred from some aspects of web development so that advertisements can be shoved down my throat

Right now it's only with the 175 USD XTC2Clip with all the attachments including the power adapter - and as of my last look, it cannot factory lock the bootloader thanks to temporary S-OFF so it will show up as relocked which will void the warranty anyway. In other words, we are all out of luck for now.
And it remains to be seen if HTC actually lets us keep our warranty in the US... The warranty in the box says otherwise.

175.00, S-off is not that important. Like you said a relocked bootloader voids your warranty. Why are people bothering to relock bootloader especially the OP to run the RUU, it is not needed. You do mention XTC2Clip a lot in these threads. You holding stock in the company? lol

Hell no, I have no interest in dropping another 175 bucks, I think it's ridiculous but it is currently the only way to do a number of things with the device. I'd consider it if being able to unlock and relock the phone without HTC ever having a clue was a big deal or there was a Google edition and I needed to change the CID and MID or other things but honestly, I still have my 10 if I really need to get at something that was on that phone but not on this one (for example my Battle.net authenticator). I suppose I could always try Helium though with my desktop but I imagine that's a protected app like Google Authenticator which required root to backup and why I switched to Authy.
I mentioned the XTC2Clip because it is the only way to get S-OFF of any kind right now and to point out that even with its temp S-OFF, it still can't restore the bootloader to factory locked status. It's an important thing to point out, not everyone knows that HTC has two different locked statuses, one that proves the phone has been tampered with, and one that is factory locked. A lot of people ask to go back to stock so they can send it in for a warranty claim or a refund to go buy another device. The relocked bootloader obviously kills one or both options depending on the situation.

Yeah, a lot of people are claiming unlocked bootloader voids warranty now, however US is more relaxed. Every single HTC phone I had was returned with Unlocked Bootloader and S-off, never had a problem. Other countries are more strict I guess. I can understand not knowing the return policy and people relock for that reason(for returns) but I see many relocking for flashing RUU or firmware. This is not needed or even should be done. I'm a RUU flasher with each update, so I know no problems arise. This has been the case for the last 8,9 or 10 phones lol.
