Any root method that I can also unroot in case I need to return the phone? - HTC One S

Hey guys, I just got the awesome One S and looking to root it asap. Is there a root method that doesn't give you the TAMPERED notice in case I need to replace the phone?

NO,
You need to flash stock image, bootloader will stay unlocked. That should not be an issue.
The stock images are floating around sub-forum, maybe just do a search/google. Or someone will give you a link

Hmm so basically what you're saying is that I can return/replace the phone as long as I flash back to stock even if the bootloader is unlocked? I want to be sure before I go flash happy on it.

nothing is for sure
but htc allows bootloader unlock, would think if it is a hardware issue, it wouldn't be a problem
never count on it though

No doubt, I figured as much too. Thanks rugmankc, I'll wait a little longer then.

The tampering message comes up no matter what. No matter if your boot loader is unlocked. It's the unlock unlock bootloadet message parts that you need to worry about. If I'm not mistaken there a relock command code to relock it. Just fellow the unlock bootloader directions but at the end change the unlock command to the relock command.

But from what I've read, even if you relock it, it still says "Relocked" as opposed to "Locked". Is that correct?

Don't know

yeah i think i'll wait until there's a work around for this.

If I click on disable Super SU, he disappears from the device?
And to lock my HBOOT again, Which method for this?
To unlock the bootloader and install the Super Su, I used the method of the prompt comand (execute/cmd...).
'cmd: fastboot .....'
Thanks for help.

Thanks, but, in htcdev dont have relock, only unlock boot.
to relock, youll simply use the fastboot command fastboot oem lock
at this point your bootloader will say **relocked** instead of **unlocked** and it will remain so until you run an RUU that overwrites it.
Forgive me refreshing the old threads. I just wanna make sure, cos last time I unlocked bootloader I had to use xtc-clip and it was an irreversible process....so I'm kinda old school here.
If I understood correctly, unlocked bootloader is no longer a warranty issue since it can be re-locked, isn't it? As long as your possible HW-problem doesn't make adb, ruu-installation proces an impassable nightmare, u can easily re-lock bootloader, restore stock ruu (using other words: u can erase corpus delicti and send your handset to service centre, without being caught, am I right?

Sorry buddy, you're wrong!
Once you have unlocked your bootloader (its state would change from "Locked" to "Unlocked") it can be locked again but its state will be set to "Relocked".
You can't restore the original state of "Locked" neither by launching any stock RUU nor by flashing a new version of the bootloader.
Corpus delicti is rather hard to hide, I'm afraid... Your hands are stained with blood and HTC has tons of luminol in its warehouses...
Thank you for clarification! I was hoping that RUU would overwrite "re-locked" to "locked", but I guess that'd be too good to be true
That's the reason for some people to wait for s-off and avoiding unlocked bootloader via htc-dev. But to be honest, Android without root is like a Porsche with max. 100 mph.. not nearly satisfying..

[Q] Any way to restore factory bootloader settings?

I did the Super CID trick, and now it says ****Tampered**** on the top of my bootloader. The only thing left now is to unlock my bootloader so I can install some ROMs. I just want to know if there is a way to restore a locked bootloader and remove the ****Tampered**** mark on my bootloader, just in case I need to make use of the warrenty. If that's not possible, then does AT&T or HTC refuse phones that are tampered with?
Tampered goes away when you flash a ruu, and once you unlock it would always say relocked not locked, most of the time the.company never checks this.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Sounds like I have nothing to worry about then. Thanks!
Also, the tampered flag is actually referring to you having root.
red text
Is there anyway to remove the red text on the boot up screen when I power up my phone? Is that caused by unlocked bootloader?

Actually it's not just referring to root, it applies changing any factory .img, or files in the system partition also, because if you do a fresh RUU and unlock the bootloader then fastboot flash a recovery.img then try booting to recovery it will put the ***tampered*** sign at the top aswell without rooting it

...Not that you should really do that unless you're returning your phone or something of that nature. No one is going to look at the red warning text and arrest you.

I second this. If you take it into att to do a warranty exchange they almost never check in HBOOT. Just hide any tell tail signs that its rooted like custom themes and titanium backup and super user

[Q] Rooting w/o htcdev

I havent followed newest info for some time, but I noticed that at htcdev you can get HTC One S kernel code.
Have this made us anywhere closer to unlocking without htcdev to keep warranty?
I want to root, but I dont want to avoid any kind of warranty (technical service guys here are assholes)
Just do it with HTC dev say to them if anything does happen that I got my token id and everything to unlock bootloader but thought about it and in the end didn't do it they can't say u did then

If you unlock the phone, it will be flagged AFAIK. Even if you don't do anything and relock it, it will be flagged as "relocked". If you flash anything, it will be flagged as "tampered" as well.
I am new to the whole android modding scene but from my understanding, you can NOT get rid of any of those flags without S-OFF which the community hasn't been able to achieve yet.

downgrade to ics

Is there any way of downgrading from jellybean to ics?I am not rooted, unlocked or whatever! .Please let me know if there is any way,i dont want to root and unlock my BL
Only way is to unlock the bootloader. No other way.
ok .bt unlocking bootloader voids warranty.and i have seen so many posts here with different kinds of bricks.
Unlocking the bootloader MAY void your warranty. HTC have to prove that by unlocking the bootloader, for example, if your camera breaks, that by unlocking the bootloader, YOU broke the camera. And it is very difficult for them to prove that. And you can relock it with a bit of hex-editing and they will never know.

Dont worry about unlocking the bootloader mate. You can always re-lock it and revert back to how it was out of the box. As for bricking, if you follow the instructions properly you wont brick your phone.
i know but i am noob at this..and i know i can revert it to stock..but the bootloader will say relocked.and will it get my warranty back? and i cant find proper guides.for rooting..unlocking bootloader, relocking bootloader and reverting back to stock.
You can hex edit the mmcblk0p3 file to revert the status to ***LOCKED*** instead of ***RELOCKED***

Well you can revert to stock using an RUU, which you can get from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2140967 . Once you run the RUU it'll say "locked" as it did before and not "relocked" so yes you will get your warranty back.

[Q] silly question, but if my bootloader says tampered and locked...

Before anyone sets the hounds on me, I ask this question with a massive grain of salt. I had to send my original HOXL back to ATT (warranty) and my new one is on JB. I'm assuming that they reset the CID and relocked the BL when they installed JB on this unit and then packaged it to be sent out as a refurb.
Since it is tampered and locked, would the only way to unlock this be to go on a wild goose hunt and find the person that owned this device last and get the unlock code bin file from them?
I would try to go onto HTCdev and type in my token identifier but I have the feeling that ATT would have reset the CID when they reflashed their official JB.
Thoughts? Should I give up hope? lol

If you can somehow get the unlock code bin then you should be OK. However, I doubt you will get that. It is weird that they sent you a phone that was void by warranty though.
Any who, good luck.

If they put write protection on your phone you will not be able to hex edit to unlock. Check to see if you can issue commands in adb first. I hate to see anyone brick.

What Rom exactactly and hboot are you on now. They either updated you to a non rootable version or you will still be able to get bootloader unlocked . Previous owners has no relevance to the process .

well if he had that unlock_code.bin, could he possibly still unlock the bootloader? it was tampered with, so SOMETHING happened
Ya he originally was rooted and unlocked so the tampered will stay there even if you ruu unless you change it with being s off. I'm thinking that if they would of pushed newest update to your phn it would have bricked it. Just check your version and as long as its not the lastest go about unlocking /rooting as you would normally. If its the newest version its write protected so it just won't work, it wouldn't brick phone
