ive had a droid for a month or so. i was a big blackberry guy and have heard all the great things about droid so i used my upgrade for a droidx. ive been told this is the forum to really get the most out of you droid. i am semi literate with this phone (not nearly as much so as my blackberry) but won't the most out of it ... how should i start, what should i do / download. i want a fast different look that my otr droid friends will be envious of

Hi, welcome to the forum!
It can be massively overwhelming for new users here to know what is acheivable and what isn't, especially if you're not too familiar with the OS on the device you are using.
I would suggest getting to know the forum and learning which sections are relevant to you first. Browse around for a while and read some guides. What really helped me was to focus on the 'Post your Home Screen', screenshot type threads where people showed what they had done with their own phones. This way you can see what is acheivable and start leaning how to get there yourself.
FAQ/Guides/Wiki stickies are a good resource and are found in most of the forums.
Well for starters decide if you want to root your phone or not - read about what's that about, how does it "liberate" your device (AND YOU) from the tyranny of evil phone produces, just how badly you can break your device (the warnings), etc. After that you can begin trying different ROMs (custom firmwares) for your device, until you find the one, that suits your needs. Then learn BASH and begin writing scripts, hacking the living hell out of your device...
...or just use a custom "launcher" app, if you literally want your phone to look different. You can find some at the Market.
PS: Either way remember, the search bar is your friend. Before posting check if anybody has asked the same question - at least 95% of cases you'll find more about your problem/question, just by searching.

I am new to Android and Galaxy Note is my first Android phone. I have been hearing a lot of new terms from friends & colleagues and I wanted help from this community to get set up. One of the many terms that I have heard is rooting the phone and from my Linux knowledge it seems having root access on the phone. I have been successful in playing with root permissions using Superuser, Root Explorer and Titanium Backup. However, I would like to have a way to learn all of this in a structured format. I would like to know the purpose of ODIN and working with it. The implications of CMW and having custom kernels and ROMs installed on my phone.
Could somebody please assist me with links to get started off?

Here you go. That is a link to the XDA wiki. That will be able to answer all of your questions. You can find alot of great info throughout the different forums on the site. Just take your time and do alot of exploring and reading before you jump into things. You won't regret it.

Check out the mt4gs forums, specifically the development section. There are step by step guides that will walk you through the process. Any other questions should be directed to the mt4gs q&a section.
Before I begin, I'd like to say that I do indeed have 8.3.1 firmware. I know there isn't much if any thing out for that firmware. If not, then please answer my questions under the hypothetical situation that I am running an earlier version so that I may have a better understanding of how everything works and apply that knowledge for future occasions. I know there are many other tutorials out for similar devices, but I'd like advice and tutorials as specific as possible for my device. I like details and specifics when I learn different things. I'm meticulous like that. Thank you.
Okay. Apparently I am special like the noob registration video says I am, but I am totally and utterly confused. I am no way savvy when it comes to modifying Android products in even the slightest way, and I request help even though my problem has already most likely been addressed multiple times elsewhere...
As the title of the thread says, I have a Kindle Fire HD 8.9" device running the 8.3.1 firmware, but I don't know where to even begin! I am seeing terms strewn everywhere like "root", "bootloader", "twrp", "go launcher", "CM10", etc. Some hacks bundle different things together, while others require one to manually install the other components yourself whatever they may be. My question(s), as vague as it is, is what in the world do all of these mean, which ones are recommended for my device, and in which order do I install them? I have looked at many tutorials how to do different things for different devices, but they seem to fail to explain all the pre-requisites and/or all the possible alternate paths you could take to further expand on your android experience. If they do, they fail to do it layman's terms where someone like me could even understand.
With all of that said (and asked), I would like to throw out one more question. Is there indeed anything for my device yet? I searched in the device search bar, but it only recognizes the 7" device, not the 8.9". Also, as far as what generation I have if that is even a concern, I don't know how to find out. I'm aware this is probably a handful to sort out and answer, especially in such a way that won't confuse the living daylights out of me, but if one courageous soul manages to do so or at least attempt it, I will be grateful. If my guide is too difficult to follow for you, you should probably wait a bit longer until twrp is available. This will make things easier.
But to be honest my guide is pretty detailed and describes each step that needs to be taken.
as already mentioned in the thread you should always research properly before blindly following “friendly” guides.
I think with a tiny bit of research the guide is pretty easy to follow.
with that said, if you face a specific hurdle or question you cannot solve with proper research, just post in my thread and I’m sure myself or somebody else will help you out

it's not only about 'researching properly'.
Thing is, for instance, reading the first few lines from your 'detailed' guide, I already don't know how to obtain the 2 prerequisites:
- latest adb and fastboot binaries
- working adb and fastboot environment
and for the first prerequisite, I already have a bunch of questions to ask despite already researching for hours on XDA:
1. I searched and found something called 15 seconds adb but how can I ensure it's the latest? it was posted a few years ago
2. I know fastboot is a mode which my phone can boot to but what are fastboot 'BINARIES'? what is a binary even? is the thing included in the package I download from the above thread?
3. what is a working adb and fastboot environment and how to obtain/achieve/test whether I have already got it?
and then what are boot images and I couldn't find/download the boot.img of my version. I cannot see mine from the google drive link from another thread - this problem has been described in your thread too
I think more descriptions or download links would be more helpful for guiding us to achieve these - to be more specific, a presentation like the thread of rooting K10 I provided above is what I am looking for. @Freak07 went out of his way to give everyone a VERY user friendly guide for rooting. It really couldn't be simpler. Sorry but if there are things in there you don't understand then it is on you to research it and learn, rather than the responsibility of the community to break it down. If you post your questions people will be more than willing to help explain things but the responsibility is on you.
The guide for rooting really couldn't be easier than what was posted. Very user friendly. If that's still too much than just as Freak said, you should wait for twrp to be available.

it´s all about researching properly! I will demonstarte it to you!
1. if I google "latest fastboot and adb binaries"

the very first article from xda points you to a direct download link from google.

the article even states that these will remain the latest binaries. But just so you can see the actual version try "adb version" in terminal.
there are many guides on xda on how to set up your fastboot/adb folder/environment depending on your OS! just try to follow one and see if adb/fastboot commands actually work.

the adb and fastboot binaries are the files inside the downloaded package from 1. called adb and fastboot. (the filename extension may vary with your OS)

To the noobs like myself, if it cannot be more friendly, no further researches should be needed just like the example I posted for LG K10. Also, I have never said that it's the responsibility for anyone to break it down. I simple knew that a more detailed guide is possible and requested it. If someone is willing to write one, they will; and if not, then nothing I can do. It was never a burden/responsibility on anyone. Are you hinting that I don't have the rights of requesting a more detailed guide because requesting = believing that it is the the responsibility of someone?
I mean, all I want is also very simple - a step-by-step guide that is as detailed and 'friendly' enough for noobs so that no researches are required as the one for LG K10. I am not here to invoke any disappointments or criticising freak's guide or anything in the first place. maybe you're right about researching properly. Again, it's on the noobs being a noob not on you and I appreciate your good work. but still, my main point is, I would like to cordially request a step-by-step guide that is detailed and 'friendly' enough that even noobs can use without further researches just like the example I have shown for LG K10. why? because
1) noobs like me don't have the time/the ability to 'research properly' (I have already spent hours to research, and still encountering problems, and every time I get stuck, I need to ask some nooby questions (which could clearly be solved by simply stating more steps) in the thread and wait for someone to reply and I get stuck nearly every single step. How many more weeks/months do I need to spend on this? I have a very busy schedule.)

So I took a look at the guide you linked us to.
Half of the links are deleted by a moderator. They probably pointed to some videos that are not allowed on XDA, because they generate income of some sort. So it seems to me.
Personally I feel that my guide is as detailed as the one you linked. And less confusing.
My guide explains how to root the your U12+ (with the current state of things - means no fully working TWRP) and a ton more things. I intentionally left out how to unlock your bootloader, set up adb and fastboot. The simple reason is that there are tons! of guides out on XDA which are just a simple XDA or Google search away.
Ultimately XDA is a place to learn and strive forward as a community. You don´t want to learn, you just want a guide that explains every little detail. ( at best with photos and videos) If you don´t have the time to research at least a little bit, my offer still stands. Wait for a working TWRP as it will simplify the matter.
We already explained to you, there are many people that answer specific questions that arise on your path. Other people profit from these answered questions, in case you ask them and post them in the corresponding thread.
I already answered your last 3 questions. So you should at least be able to start and see where it brings you.
I´m also not deaf to any valuable feedback. I already added that "how to check if adb is actually working" to the guide as it seemed a good idea to me.
So please feel free to contribute, what´s ultimately the purpose of a community.

Otherwise there is a bit of risk involved because you have no way of obtaining the stock boot.img from your current firmware.

Like WhatsApp or telegram or discord etc. As you have admitted, your guide needs tons of further researching (as you know there are tons of articles but I don't know which one is the one I'm looking for and suitable for my phone) and the link I have as an example doesn't (deleted links were screenshots and YouTube videos by the op). is not I am expecting rapid back and forth asking and clarifying into details on each question. Asking in the forum is too slow and not time efficient

You´re asking others to invest time so you can save your own time. You´re asking for knowledge from people, who invest time to obtain this knowledge. I remember once there was a chat group for rooting a phone on stacks, WhatsApp or discord. Why not make one for u12+ to ease everyone? It's 2018, maybe the mode of forum isn't fast enough and needs to be changed. Forum is for complete detailed guides. But if you insist, this thread can become one with hella short questions and answer posts. That's also not aesthetical. Also, do think about your initial aim of releasing a guide. isn't it helping others who don't know how to root u12+? if so, why declining an even effective way of teaching people (me) by allowing me to send you my questions instantly whenever I encounter problems following your guide? Or, which you should disagree with, is it only for your self-gratification to gain recognition from others in this 'community'?
Anyway, even you are not physically preventing anyone from fulfilling my request, what you said already to a certain extent have driven potential writers away. It's actually kinda selfish because it's totally fine if you are not writing one but you don't have to drive people away from writing one. Anyway, even you are not physically preventing anyone from fulfilling my request, what you said already to a certain extent have driven potential writers away. It's actually kinda selfish because it's totally fine if you are not writing one but you don't have to drive people away from writing one. please don´t get personal with your arguments.
everyone, including you, is free to start such a chat! Open it up and get it going. It´s just, that I won´t start it nor will I maintain or support it.
Again my guide is complete and detailed. and if there is indeed something missing or a little change to be made to make it a bit more polished I will update it. As I already did.
Feel free to ask your questions in the thread and I´m sure they will be answered at some point. Then everyone can profit from your research and from the questions and answers that arose while doing the research.
time spent on researching is never wasted. even if you don´t find all answers swiftly it is never wasted. The journey is the reward!
Thread closed. This seems to have become a thread less focussed on finding an answer and more so on flaming your peers. Given that that seems to be the case for the entire thread, there is no point in leaving this open if all it is going to do is cause excessive drama.

I'm no dev, but i've come to be decently familiar with these devices.
If it's bricked - and you're arriving at having "looked everywhere" for a fix to no avail, DO NOT HESITATE to post your problemo. I may be able to help and would be glad to take a whack at it.
(A description of what went wrong, how your brick came to be would be helpful in solving your particular case.)

But definitely post here as well or give a link to your existing "need help" post if you already happen to have one.
If not bricked - maybe looking to see what other cool things can be done with these. Especially if you didn't know that these tablets are essentially mini pc's.
You could very well install Linux (Lubuntu | as Ubuntu runs like balls)
or even Windows (less practical .. still haven't gotten the drivers totally figured out .. but pretty neat nonetheless).
Creating backup firmware .img's - Also if you're unbricked a VERY useful thing to do would be to boot a Live Lubuntu from USB and create backup .imgs of each partition using the "dd" command. THEN, you'll have a working firmware backup for yourself and/or others who may need some stock imgs! With the very lacking amount of stock firmware to be found for these devices, making backups with this method would be very cool of you and helpful to everyone!
(Assistance and clarification can easily be given wherever needed!)

I'm confident that you didn't and don't intend to break any forum rules, and I really appreciate that you confirm this. I'm also convinced that you agree that XDA members won't benefit from any - although well intended - assistance or support that is provided outside of XDA by whatever social media.
This is one of the reasons that and as an exemption to the last bullet of rule no. 5 of the forum rules (which my esteemed team mate @TNSMANI linked in his post above) we only grant developers the privilege to provide references to their social media in their own development threads.
