Hi All,
I am new to Android and Galaxy Note is my first Android phone. I have been hearing a lot of new terms from friends & colleagues and I wanted help from this community to get set up. One of the many terms that I have heard is rooting the phone and from my Linux knowledge it seems having root access on the phone. I have been successful in playing with root permissions using Superuser, Root Explorer and Titanium Backup. However, I would like to have a way to learn all of this in a structured format. I would like to know the purpose of ODIN and working with it. The implications of CMW and having custom kernels and ROMs installed on my phone.
Could somebody please assist me with links to get started off?
Thanks,
Anupam

Here you go. That is a link to the XDA wiki. That will be able to answer all of your questions. You can find alot of great info throughout the different forums on the site. Just take your time and do alot of exploring and reading before you jump into things. You won't regret it.
hello, i am a new android user and have a stock mt4gs. i am considering rooting and doing more with my phone but i am a little wary. i would consider myself a power user of pc's (win and mac) but i am coming at it from the graphics world so the tech side can really throw me off. after all the reading i have done on rooting i am more wary than when i started. my basic question: is there a resource that can give a very general overview of the rooting/moding processes? i have been all over the XDA site for days now but i seem to end up finding technical guides that answer more specific question about the process or go into details of this patch or that flash but not something that really just gives the A-B-C fundamentals for noobs like me and how to approach it in a somewhat safe and responsible manner.
thx in advance!

Check out the mt4gs forums, specifically the development section. There are step by step guides that will walk you through the process. Any other questions should be directed to the mt4gs q&a section.

Greetings
I am in the situation of needing to learn a lot more about what I am doing here and am having a hard time finding the information at a level I can understand,if some of you can help me I would be very appreciative
(1) how do I tell the various versions of Odin apart and what each one of them does
(2) how do I learn about flashing all the various other things that goes with the various roms IE: modems, themes, and so on
(3) how do I learn what the various things are and when to use them IE:kernals and stuff
yes I know I am new here,I also have add ( and I am also very unfamiliar with the inner workings of programming in general,,I was going to learn more about computers while I was in high-school but the instructor felt punchcards were above his abilities to instruct us on {slight exaggeration not much})
thanks in advance
charles
and I have been “lurking” here for about a month, spending between 2 and 8 hours a day reading/studying on this site,,honestly
[edit] I am able to find themes kernals and whatever but I have no idea what to do with them,,some sources say to flash with clockworkmod but I have no idea how to do this,I am sure it is easy if you know hope, unfortunately I do not
Read the Linux bible, that's a great start.
thanks for taking the time to reply,,not sure that reference will be of assistance but will attempt to check it out
It will be more efficient to read the sticky GUIDE in the forums of a specific model.
thank you for taking the time to post a comment,,I have read the stickies in all the captivate forums and general forums,, I am trying to get directions to someplace that can be just a little more clear,, but am beginning to understand why so many people ask questions that seem "stupid"
hi everyone, im new to XDA & also new to Android OS. I need someone who knows what they are doing to help me understand XDA & how the rooting process works.
any experienced rooters out there looking for a student??
What device do you have/ what specifically do you want to know about rooting and or xda
Far as learning what XDA is all about, this thread is a good place to start.
Welcome to the XDA community! I'm still relatively new to the Android OS as well, and my knowledge expands greatly by the day here. Really, the best way to learn XDA is to explore it all and read a lot before posting!
XDA is the resource to goto, to find out how to do stuff. However, don't shy away from using Google to familiarize yourself with the jargon used in the Android mod community. It is invaluable to know what rooting, bootloader, recovery, fastboot and adb mean, before attempting to modify your phone/tablet to something better software wise.
I haven't been around too long but I've successfully flashed roms on 3 phones if you need anything pm me. And I've done a little bit more but not much. My most advanced knowledge is making the hello world app with java lol. Good luck to ya and welcome.
The device specific forums are the best place to get rooting info for your phone. You'll find guides and wiki therein.
You might want to watch this guide to learn more about XDA itself:

Again you get to keep everything you make. I just want a nationwide team. Currently I have the Dallas/Ft. worth market.

Serious experienced rooters only.. I will not train you..Jason 214-477-1571
I'm new to Android and this forum.
I've been using a stock Galaxy S2 a few months, now I'm ready to take it to the next level and learn how to root and modify Android properly.
I will be getting a Galaxy S3 upon release, and that's the one I'm going to modify.
I have lots of patience and a strong desire to learn how to do this right.
After doing a search of the forum, I didn't find a thread (perhaps I missed it?) that addresses a comprehensive way to do this.
Seems like many people are only looking for a quick solution. I'd rather spend the time and learn Android thoroughly.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I would recommend doing a you-tube search for your phone and how to root, after that I would also recommend looking at the rom you want on you-tube. Also look in the XDA developers forums on your phone that should also help you. If you are totally stuck do a google search that's how I rooted my phone with no prior knowledge
Hey guys!
Did some some searching around on this site and couldn't even find a mention of my device. I just recently bought a Huawei Y210C android phone. It is a Chinese manufacturer, which might explain the sparsity of information in English about it.
Anyway, about me, I do some programming in Java, and I want to eventually be making android apps. I also want to root my huawei, try some different ROMs on it and stuff. Now, as far as android development goes, I'm a pure beginner. Does it matter that there aren't people talking specifically about my phone, or can I snag some 'how to root' guides from other devices and ROMs, etc., and use them effectively, or would I have to figure out how to root it on my own?
Essentially, what I am asking is: given that there is no sub-forum for my device, and that I'm a dev noob, will I find useful stuff around here?
cheers
For anyone, and everyone , unless your gonna hack XDA, or blow the servers up then NO! otherwise yes, and you are very welcome if you ask me . Always nice seeing another XDA member. You may or may not know shiz about flashing a ROM, or kernel, or unlocking bootloaders, etc, etc, but that's why there are tutorials to get people started
Everything you needed to get started should be here , welcome to XDA

As far as your phone. You can for sure utilize XDA, I just did a search and there's not really much of anything for your phone, but you can for sure still post stuff you make for it on here . I'm pretty sure you could utilize the 'Android Developing and Hacking' or 'Legacy&Low Activity Devices' to post your work for that phone .

XDA is a great information resource for pretty much anything Android related. Being that you have a desire to develop apps I'm 99.9999% positive there is someone on XDA that'll help you out any way they can if you have any questions. In the end though only you can answer your own question. Joining XDA was one of the best choices I have made and now its inspired me to learn the Python language and then I'll tackle Java lol.

noob trying to get some xp and gain some knowledge.
i have the Amazon Kindle Fire 2nd gen running sysv 10.5.1
i have root access (kingroot, newest version. gained access once, then did factory reset, and did it again. kingroot stayed on HD after reset. idk why)
tested both times with es file mngr to ensure true / permissions
removed bloatware and advertisement apps. disabled some start-up processes snagged a couple of cool *root* apps and what not on the first go around.
only gained / access after the "factory reset" to not disturb too much and possibly fubar the whole gig when i'm so close to the goal
ultimate desired state atm is cm-11 (for otter2) TWRP 2.6.3.1 with some cool ass apps and blahblahblah
this is the guide im about to follow https://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_otter2 with the exception of the cable thing. i feel fairly confident that i can fastboot without it since i have superuser abilities and ive read several places that its doable but much safer and easier with the "sudo" cable. im a big boy. im willing to take a chance but if its not possible without the cable of paramount capabilities then it would be asinine to brick my **** "cuz i figurd it wud werk alright"
Sorry to be so long winded. just trying to be well detailed to make sure you guys know where i'm at in my little adventure.
So finally to the question
i've read two very different opinions on this from multiple people, in multiple threads, on multiple forums, etc.
is fastboot mode or state (however its referred to) achievable on the AKF(2ndGen) v10.5.1 as / without that eversofrustrating cable? like, is there a credible dev out there that says "yeah, dudes. f*** the cable. i just make it sudo whatever i tell it to" not necessarily verbatim but, you're smart, you know what im getting at.
simply put CAN IT BE DONE!?! (really im just trying to flash a rom on something that my wife wont remove my right testicle for bricking just to get a feel before using the fancy new trick discovered for LG G3 VS985. super excited. just the tot to 10 then kdz to 12 whatever whatever has me only slightly perspiring)
thank you for your time patience knowledge and inconceivable willingness to help losers like me who have a linux literacy of the 3rd grade on a good day. you guys are so awesome.
and im not just saying that. i swear
hello,
Welcome to XDA.
I have a KFHD7(1st Gen), the customization process involves installing a 2nd bootloader. I'm not familiar with the 2nd gen though.
Look through the Kindle fire forum linked below and see if there is anything to help you, you'll need to look through the "Android Development" and the "Original Android Development subforums there for all the custom mods for that device.
