At some point when I wasn't watching, my note 4 seems to have found something sharp to fight with and there is a fairly nasty (can feel with fingertip) inch long scratch on the glass towards the bottom of the display.
Yes, I should have bought a cover, but having had 2 HTCs over the past 5 years without getting a single scratch I obviously thought I had some kind of anti-scratch super powers. (I am anti-scratch man, see me in an upcoming movie...). So anyway, obviously I was wrong.
I have been doing a bit of research and see suggestions that were I to get a tempered glass protector, then the silicone sticky would likely fill in the scratch and make it magically vanish when the cover was applied.
Is this true? If so, what cover would you recommend?
If false - any other solutions?
It is under warranty but I'm pretty sure Samsung don't cover "cosmetic damage" like scratches.
And apologies, this really isn't intended as "yet another cover thread" I know there are loads, but rather a "what cover will fix my ****" thread
i'm not sure of any solutions for you but i want to show you my experience with a small scratch (i could feel it with my finger tips and my finger nail would be able to feel the depth of it). I never heard of it filling in a scratch but thats not to say that its false but in my case i got the glass to cover it so i wouldn't feel it when using the spen (at times the spen would get stopped on the scratch)
https://goo.gl/photos/RitAZ9r5EA4hn47H8
This was my old note 3 and this is with the screen protector on. in my case it did not make the scratch vanish or get filled in but it did help with not being able to feel it was there.
It's not that true. It'll help a little, but it's mostly just marketing. Only real fix is to have the screen replaced.
Get a tempered glass so you don't feel the scratch and it'll also help disguise it from some angles, and after a few weeks you'll stop caring or paying attention to the scratch.
Well my display panel suddenly broken from inside showing no wear/shatters in the glass itself. But that's another story. Buying a tempered glass cover will hide those little scratches (those non-deep scratches that are only visible at a certain angle) and your screen will look like brand new. Unfortunately if you have a deep scratch it may hide it a lot but you will see a multicolor line (distorted pixels) and, in the worst case, an air bubble.
Clean and polish screen, fill in scratch with vaseline, polish again, apply tempered glass on top.

Vasoline? Have you done this it sounds too good to be true. Does it matter which tempered glass?

First do not use vaseline it is a petroleum product and petroleum products dissolve other petroleum products.
what I mean by this is that the vaseline could potentially eat at the screen protector, " yes even the tempered glass ones " as they are coated with various films that are most likely made from petroleum based plastics.
However the person who suggested did touch on a good idea.
Instead of vaseline I would recommend " Silicone Grease " first because it's not petroleum based but second because it is thicker and will not melt/liquify when your phone gets warm in your pocket or during use.
You can find silicone grease in the plumbing dept. at any Lowes, Home Depot, Menards, Etc. it is usually used inside of faucets to coat the rubber seals within and is made to not deteriorate under extreme temperatures.
Keep some around as it's good for other things aswell.
Otherwise do as instructed above and polish, then apply enough silicone grease to fill in the scratch before finally applying your tempered glass if there are air bubbles after the first try apply more grease and re-apply your tempered glass if you still have air bubbles you could try using a vibrating sander " with the sandpaper removed " of-course. But I doubt that would be necessary.
If all goes well I doubt youll barely notice the scratch unless it is a rough one " meaning not a clean scratch "
Hope this helps

Just received Niilken 9H+ tempered glass screen protector from www.cbay.co.nz
Handful of cleaning agents included with the protector.
1. Wet cleaning cloth
2. Dry cleaning cloth
3. Adhesive film to remove dust
4. Wiping cloth
5. Extra stickers to hold the protector without directly touching
Unfortunately, the one I received did not fully adhere to the screen. There were gaps all around the protector border, and refused to set properly even after firmly pressing it down.
It did not affect s-pen functionality nor front camera, but it could have been better.
Overall, otherwise looks good and does its job as one of the first tempered glass protectors for note 4.

Wrong forum thread. The reason the glass does not fit properly is because of the 2.5D screen shape at the edges.

He's quite right, on both counts.
The phone's screen curves almost imperceptibly before it gets to the "obvious" curve at the edge of the screen. Most (all current?) tempered glass protectors are perfectly flat on the backside - this doesn't adhere properly at the edges because the phone's screen curves away.
The threads in the accessories section have covered this in quite some detail. Some manufacturers are busy trying to design a glass protector that both adheres properly and is easy to apply.

You are right, I actually misread that as 2.5D for screen protector. I am aware of the screen curvature starting within the viewing screen.
Thank you though.

iloome is currently the only company who is making a Note 4 tempered glass screen protector that is designed to fit OVER the 2.5D curved edges,
All other pieces will either stop short of the curve or will have issues adhering.
Why bother, it's gorilla glass 3 right? Pretty scratch resistant as it is. I never used anything on my LG G3 and its scratch free. Or my G Pro 2. Never had an issue. The GG3 glass is good enough I think to use without anything and it looks so much better as a result.

"Pretty scratch resistant" isn't "completely immune to scratches". The point being that if you cover your phone with a protector no matter what happens (short of a drop/stanley knife) you're quite literally covered. Having a decent screen protector, glass or not, along with a case means you can throw your phone into a pocket with a bunch of keys with little regard to how your phone will fare.
I'd much rather have to replace a £5-15 protector than realise at some point that there's a scratch on the actual glass on my screen. You can't go back from that - you can replace protectors easily. People have different usage profiles, just because your 3 phones are scratch free, doesn't mean that others won't want to protect theirs.

I always thought the same, but afraid to try it.... anybody else not use any protection and not get scratches?
Your right I have friends that are tradesmen, and I wouldn't go without a screen protector if I was them. I wouldn't go with a high even phone either.
But in my case my G3 / Note 4 is in my pocket and just my phone alone. Maybe that's why. I don't put my phone inside with coins or keys. That's asking for trouble

One of the reviewers Note 4s screen got scratched during use after a few days(can't remember which site it way). I also remember seeing a video where Gorilla Glass gets microscopic scratches without a protector and these scratches make the whole structure weaker and more prone to shatter when dropped.
Stopped using mine, and love it. Just an overall more pleasant experience with the phone, and plan on keeping it off.

I see no need for a screen protector if your device is equipped with Gorilla glass (and you are handling it carefully).
Sent from my black pearl using Tapatalk
I always use tempered glass screen protector to make sure fine grits of sand and any hard object don't scratch the screen. I can live with scratched bezels like that on my Note 4 but not on any of my phones's screen.
Never used a protector and have not had any problems. If I was a construction worker or farmer I'd put it in a case, but I have a desk job so it's never exposed to harsh conditions.
Dropped my phone in the parking lot a few months ago. The tempered glass took a chip on the edge, but my screen was fine. I dare not think about what would have happened to the screen otherwise.
Screen
After a lot of drops, screen still looks intact. But from closer look I can see some scratches. If it wasn't Gorilla glass 3 I will definitely buy screen protector.
I often sell my phones and the first thing a buyer looks for are scratches on the screen; therefore, I always use a tempered glass screen protector. Over time, I find that fine scratches will develop, even with Gorilla glass.
As seen on the android wear watches. Gorilla glass is very good against breaking, or destroying, but isn't as good against scratches, so these little scratches always build over time. I've never used any kind of these glass temmpered protectors or whatever nonsense, because the gorilla glass is sufficient enough against breaking, and when u drop the phone on the edge, the glass won't save you either way and the display will crack due to the "construction" of gorilla glass. It's very dense and strong against any impact from the front side, but is very fragile to impacts from "sides". So I use a foil from myscreenprotector dot com. I have S IV for almost 2 years now, and I'm really harsh on it. I've dropped it like zillion times, It even fell a couple times from stairs and nothing happened. My middle frame had pieces falling out, so I've changed it, I've changed the back cover and I'm planning on changing the front frame, because its compltely shattered at some places. But the screen never cracked. And the foil from the site... I can't even see it on the display, It doesn't feel different to touch and I use to replace it every year or so (8$ isn't that much...) and when I peel the foil off the display, the display is as new as the first day I got it, no scratches what so ever
EDIT: I've started with the android wear... I currently have huawei watch for 3 months and it has sapphire glass, which is not as strong as gorilla glass, but is extremely good vs scratches... And I've never seen anyone, who would stomp on their watch, but you can scratch them anywhere...
I don't. Each to their own I guess.
Gorilla glass is too high rated. I've seen drop tests for all Samsung S phones, from about shoulder height. They all ended up with broken screens. Gorilla glass my ass.
The Oukitel K4000's screen is amazing. You can hammer nails with it and the screen won't even have a scratch. Manufacturers should start making screens like the K4000's screen.
Gorilla glass my ass, its scratch easily in my jeans back pocket,, so i put on tempered glass
My protection
In the 2 1/2 years I used the S4, I never used a screen protector. My protection came from using a Nite Ize belt holster made of ballistic nylon with a flap. I do have a line across the front of the phone from wear of putting it in or out of the holster but it doesn't detract from the appearance. The phone has been dropped on occasion on a variety of surfaces with no damage to the screen.
As has been noted, YMMV. FWIW, I have moved on to the Moto X Pure and use the same type holster along with the plastic bumper that came with the phone. No drops yet but am thinking about getting a tempered glass cover.
i had a zagit but got tired of the dull screen so I removed it...glad i did and haven't scratched the screen yet
I gave up on screen protectors. They are expensive, difficult to put on the right way without getting dust underneath, and the glass ones are so fragile. Last one I tried literally snapped in my hand trying to align it to the screen. Something that fragile will not provide much protection even though it looks good.
I use a random tempered glass screen + an otterbox defender with the built in screen protector removed.
I have this case. $15 at a stand at the mall. Rubberized layer to wrap the phone, tough tight fitting outer shell with a grippy back, bumpers on the corners and raised rubber around the screen bezel to keep the screen from making contact with the floor in case of face down drops or rubbing in the pockets. Only complaint i have with it is the holes for the volume and power buttons are a little too flush, making it a bit of a pain to get used to, but adjusting wasnt so bad after a while. And again the case is tight fitting, so getting it on and off is a minor headache but worth it. Tested drops from arms length above my head (I'm 5'9", so say about 6'8"), not a single mark on the screen. Just cracked the plastic above the volume buttons. No need for screen protector here though a tempered one would be nice. However I agree the loss in sensitivity with a screen protector on is not worth the hassle of actually applying it and risking the nasty bubbles. At $5+ a pop, having them eventually peel at the edges and get dirt under it can cause more damage than normal wear and tear if your careful enough
I never use screen protector.

I use those cheap Walmart screen protectors, and the key to putting them on is the tape trick. Barely have any bubbles underneath.

Agree. See no point in the tempered glass protectors when they're not gonna prevent your glad from shattering. I just use those $10 screen protectors from Walmart just to prevent little scratches from dirt and stuff. And really, I only use screen protectors now because I realize how" wet" and harder to slide your finger across a baked screen can get. Screen protectors makes swiping e screen much smoother and easier.

I haven't. However I do have a case that has a slight bumper around the top of my screen, therefore there is no huge need for me to have one.
I bought Xiaomi original tempered glass but now in the middle of my screen I have like an oily colored stain. Of course it's not oil but I think there is air between my screen and the tempered glass. Doesn't the tempered glass contain holes for the sound? I hope it's not my screen. But when I turn of my device I can see it too so I really think it's the tempered glass. Need a new one! Ordered one so we'll see.
Yeah I thought so too...
I bought two of them, thinking they would last for life LOL.
I installed the first one, and noticed that rainbow effect on anything that was a constant shade. I thought it was me. So I tried pulling it off and the tempered glass protector shattered in my hands. I thought it was stronger than that, given that it supposed to be almost scratch proof.
Anyhoot, put the second one one, tried to be hyper protective and clean. Same thing. They are garbage. Probably more to do with the fact that the protector floats over the phone's screen than actually on it. Hence creating a projector effect off the back side of the tempered glass. Seeing as the tempered glass is not a Nikon optics quality glass lens, it creates this rainbow effect.
I hated it.
Took it off and used a stick on one instead.

Its a phenomenon known as Newton rings, which is a circular interference pattern caused by the reflection of light between two objects.
And yes, it happens because the glass protector hovers above the screen. It has got nothing to do with the material of the particular protector though. It is the space itself which causes the effect.
It reduces considerably and becomes unnoticeable after a few days, possibly because the glass flexes gradually and lays flush with the screen due to the pressure when the phone is is in your pocket, etc.
The only thing I hate about the protector is, the black borders sometimes tend to cover parts of the actual display if there is even a slight mis-alignment. The protector is also very difficult to align precisely as it may partially cover the notification LED, if we try aligning it using the camera lens alone as a guide.
I've had 5 of these which seem to be from different suppliers/factories because the adhesive is weaker on some, some aren't shatter resistant while others are super flexible to a certain extent. Some have the issues I mentioned with alignment as I feel the cutouts aren't properly aligned on some and even the slightest variation will have you deciding whether you are willing to sacrifice a tiny part of the screen or a bit of the notification LED.
The first one I had was perfect and didn't have any issues. But a piece of stubborn dust or fibre got in between the protecfor and I couldn't get it off without damaging the clarity of the glass.
After 4 attempts at trying to get something as good as the 1st one I had, I kinda gave up on Full coverage option.
Now using a fully transparent full coverage flexible TPU film. These are extremely hard to install though. Took me 5 protectors to install without any issues and even despite that, there is a small spot of dust. Its not noticeable, so it doesn't bother me much though. The material attracts dust during installation and the adhesive on the film makes it hard to remove a dust particle. You get 3 in a pack and TPU has some moderate resistance to small impacts and scratches heal naturally. It sits between the regular PET film and tempered glass in the chain of hierarchy among screen protection.
Another downside of TPU apart from being hard to install is that it may turn yellowish after a period of time due to oxidation. The same thing that happens to even the most expensive transparent TPU cases.

Hi guys, I am thinking of applying this liquid protector, but wanted to check if any of you had any experience with it. I think that if it works, then it solves the issue of the screen curves and case compatibility. I am also very curious about applying it to the back. This combined with the Rhinoshield bumper could be awesome.
I didn't try it, i only saw videos, but tbh i don't think it's that good, i mean it wont be as good as a screend protector , maybe for scratches but the phone is already a GG5 but for falls and brakes i don't think it will protect it as good as a glass but maybe i'm wrong
lol, that liquid is a big scam.... it might help against fingerprints but not against damage.
I would be very interested if it protected from scratches, as I mentioned earlier my pkan is to use it in combination with a Crashguard so the phone is protected from drops. Other option is the back protector from Rhinoshield but reviews say that it feels weird
Snake oil.
I tried the Spigen version and I can say that inspite of it being applied to my screen according to instructions, I got some minor scratches from simple daily use. Nothing to freak out about, but enough to send me running to buy a proper screen protector.
I have been using something similar and cheaper from Aliexpress for the last 7 years. It does work i. e. prevent from scratches. It's a chemical that basically modifies the composition of the glass (don't remember all the sio2 chemistry) . It will not protect screen from falls but will definitely help with everyday scratches. Try from Aliexpress for $2 rather than outrageous Spigen price. If you don't like it, you only wasted $2.
It's liquid crystals which dry after being applied and form an additional layer on top of the glass, in most cases fusing with the glass below.
And that layer can get scratched, resulting in a scratch like any other ( which can't be removed ).
If you don't want scratches on your screen and don't want to risk it getting shattered, tempered glass is the only solution. If you only want scratch protection, though, get a soft screen protector ( or keep the one that comes pre-applied ).
Im very doubtful this does anything more then provide some finger print protection, it cant make it any harder. Corning and Asahi do some pretty insane stuff to make there glass hard and tough, i.e. hot, potassium-salt, ion-exchange bath for corning , I think Asahi use molten metal maybe tin.
If it was a simple as pouring a liquid on the screen you can be sure they would be doing it imo
I brought it for fingerprint protector and it did nothing, even though I'd followed the instructions. Ended up asking for my money back. My advice is don't bother and just got for this instead - https://orzly.com/collections/onepl...lass-screen-protector-for-oneplus-6-twin-pack
Hi
I have bought a OP 7pro second hand and the previous user had applied a liquid protector, I know that this is at least fake protection, so my question is, can I install a normal tempered glass on top?
I was THRILLED to get my Fold 2 5 days early yesterday! Then I pulled it out of my khaki pocket this afternoon (nothing else in it) and I noticed some scratches on the front "screen" which was very disappointing (see attached).
A lot of people are talking about the factory-installed screen protector on the inside -- which makes sense. After taking a closer look, it seems the outside screen has one, too, (a little surprising) and hopefully that's all that scratched.
I know it's recommend NOT to remove the inside screen protector, but what about the outside? It's supposed to have Gorilla Glass Victus for the cover display. That sounds like I should be able to remove it without any issues.
Thoughts?
That's the worst scratching I've seen on a screen protector after such little use. I don't understand Samsung insisting it should be there - surely they didn't test it very well if it scratches so easily. It doesn't make sense to use the latest Gorilla Glass Victus and cover it with such a rubbish "screen protector".
I can see a lot of people removing it as it shouldn't be needed anyway.

Thoughts?

You can remove the outer screen protector. Reason behind Samsung not recommending to remove inner screen is, While pulling of the screen protector we might damage the screen.
Outer screen glass is Gorilla Glass Victus (7) you can easily remove that one.
I think the so called outer screen protector is more of a transit film, to protect the screen during packaging and shipping. It really offers little protection as you found out. It's definitely not something I wouldn't want to keep.
I have seen YouTube videos of people removing the inside one and it didn't seem difficult or detrimental. I would probably keep that one on until more experiences are reported good or bad.
.
I complained to Samsung E-Commerce Customer Support via Chat and told them I was thinking about returning the device. Surprisingly and without requiring proof, they immediately offered me a 10% refund if I decided to keep it -- which I told them I would. Of course, there was a small gotcha... the maximum amount was $100.00 -- better than nothing!
Since it sounds pretty safe to take off the front screen protector, I'm satisfied.

I think I know why this happened. Samsung has been putting film protectors on the curved screen phones for a while as its so difficult to do yourself. For some reason the Note 20 doesn't include this for the US region.
Normally people use some sort of case on their phone and they normally have a lip on them so if you put the phone down on its front, the screen is protected from the surface. When you put a phone in your pocket, the area that will rub the most will be the bottom edges where maximum pressure from your clothes is applied, particularly the bit you scratched up.
As there is no good case solution right now, and Samsung only has rear part solutions, the front screen is vulnerable. There is no lip to take the pressure off there from clothes, nothing to stop the screen making contact with a dirty table when opened and nothing to stop general rubbing of the matte metal frame which may go shinier with time. I can't work out whether there is some protective layer on the metal rim but it feels like it and you can see the difference between the sim tray metal and the surrounding area.
Long story short, I can't figure out how to carry this phone safely without increased risk of marking it.

I have removed both the front screen protector and the main screen protector as well . It was easy . I can say that the screen feels much nicer . The screen protector is just a plastic , fingerprint magnet .

I can confirm that it is not difficult removing the main screen protector . No damage to the screen and it's a much better experience using it without that plastic screen protector

That's true but some people might not remove it properly That's why they recommend to it themselves.
But great to hear that after removing it felt nicer.
Are you planning to get new or just using naked?

I can't imagine how difficult it must be to put a new protector on when considering the size, the crease and the fact it has to be a soft protector to bend. Getting the position right and avoiding air bubbles must be a nightmare.

I bit the bullet and removed the screen protector from the inside screen. It was extremely easy, I just used a sheet of paper to gently pull away from the camera cutout enough to grasp it and pull off as easily as any other protector.
I can confirm the screen feels fantastic now, instead of a rubbery sticky feeling to that of glass. It also no longer attracts fingerprints. It seems more responsive and sharper.
I think as long as you take care not to get anything abrasive on the screen it will remain in good condition.

I recieved my Fold2 yesterday. Can I apply an additional screen guard over the factory installed screen guard in the inner screen?
