Unlocked T-Mobile Note 5 runs on Google FI Network ;)= - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note5

Well here is an interesting tidbit, I just got my Nexus 6P as a device for driving for Lyft and after booting the Nexus with the Project FI Sim card to register it on the network I realized I didn't need two phones to drive for two providers so I dropped my T-Mo sim card in the nexus 6P as as expected she fired right up on the T-Mo network and I had no where to keep the G-FI Sim card, out of fear of losing it i popped into my Note 5. Well I shut down the N-5 and kept playing with the Nexus 6P. In the morning I tuned on the N-5 to swap and copy files and the T-Mo update rolled in with full 4g LTE % bars. So it seems our Note 5 will definitely run on the Google FI network at full speed FYI. See Upper Left Corner of Note 5 http:

That's pretty interesting. Do you think it has to do with Project Fi using the Tmo network? If that's the case, then theoretically any unlocked Tmo phone should run on Fi

Well I think that's a stretch but our phone has almost every existing band which could also be a factor I'm sure. I have yet to drive all around Los Angeles or out of the county or state of CA but I will report my findings as I do travel. But none the less its a great discovery for sure.
Please hit thanks if I've helped

It would be interesting to see if it can actually switch between the different networks through. I know that you need Google Connectivity Services installed on a Fi device for proper functionality, and it does show as compatible with the Note 5. But if we don't have Sprint bands in our phone, then you'd be SOL as soon as you got out of T-Mobile or trusted WiFi coverage.

True, I haven't yet sat down and looked at Sprints cdma bands but I bet they are in this device.

The Fi SIM will only work on T-Mobile. It will NOT work on Sprint, in this configuration.
The Nexus's ESNs are whitelisted with Sprint, I believe.

That hypothesis of not working on Sprint would seem highly improbable as long as a phone is unlocked and the device and sim card are not carrier specific the device should work as my phone is now as long ...again as the phone has the carrier bands to run on that network...as stated here on the Nexus 5: http://www.idigitaltimes.com/project-fi-nexus-5-how-bypass-googles-nexus-6-exclusivity-453947 . I have turned off WIFI calling and called my office...see here: http://www.androidheadlines.com/2015/06/project-fi-works-nexus-6-xda-begs-differ.html

There's no hypothesis here, it is proven fact.
Sprint has a whitelist of IMEIs/ESN.
Put a Fi sim in a non-Fi phone, and it will not connect to Sprint -- no matter what you try to do.
Put a Fi sim in an unlocked Sprint device, and I bet it will work.

How does Sprint tell the difference from device to device? Do you think Sprint had all the Nexus 6 IMEI's that exist or were made released to them so they could specifically either admit or omit them?? Show me the FACT my phone is blacklisted? Where are you getting your information can you provide some links to relevant content?

What are the criteria for Whitelisted Devices and where is this data?
This is an excerpt from a discussion that a Nexus 6 user had trying to port over to "Sprint Only" not running on the FI network....again this is ONLY..Fully porting over to Sprint:

Another issue with Sprint devices is that they still do not rely solely on the SIM for programming. When Verizon made the switch to LTE, all programming follows their SIM as you change phones. But with Sprint, pulling a SIM leaves you with a working device, just no LTE. So that is likely why it won't automatically jump to their network.

I got my Nexus 6 yesterday. I like the phone, but the service ... still not sure if I'm going to keep it. The voice quality sounds somewhat compressed and it is difficult to hear people sometimes.
However, I was bored at work today - or kind of bored - and decided to put the Project Fi SIM in my iPhone 6 (Verizon)
I was expecting it to tell me that the SIM card wasn't approved for use in this device, but to my surprise it actually connected to Sprint and I had LTE. So, I found out my iPhone is unlocked (w00t).
I tried to make a call, and I heard a blip (like a fraction of a fraction of a second of a voice), a few seconds of silence, and then the generic cannot complete this call (Probably because the device isn't provisioned for use on the Sprint Network).
I restarted the phone, and when I restarted it - it connected to T-Mobile.
So I tried to make a call, and it worked - it went through
So, I dug around in the settings on my iPhone, and a menu called "Carrier" showed up on the main screen, and when I opened it it said "Automatically Manage Networks" or something to that effect.
I turned that option off, and it scanned for about a minute and came back with a list of Mobile Networks:
T-Mobile
Sprint
Verizon
AT&T
Metro PCS

Are we talking about the same thing here the author said "My theory with why Sprint connected for 1 time (and why T-Mobile connected and disconnected)) ..he did say "My Theory" and that was (iPhone 6 (Verizon) and also said
" T-Mobile connected and disconnected". Now I understand you are seeing this but he does plainly say " T-Mobile connected and disconnected" but I can tell you my phone is 1. Still connected and I have made over 10 calls and it has stayed connected all day so this would have to alter the authors "Theory" as he himself stated the term.
When the dust settles and the smoke clears and at the end of the day the author of your facts.. used the terminology "Theory"..hence me using the term "Hypothesis" now I realize you may not like that but that is the way it is until actual further testing is done and as of this point my phone has not been disconnected from the FI network which contradicts what the authors "Theory" stated.
(wifiguru) I am not here to have a urination match with you because I am here stating the the experience I have had at a personal real level and what I have stated is 100% factual and not simply what another author has stated as theory. I want to further explore what this could mean for this Galaxy Note 5 device the bands it internally carries and what possible benefits can come from that endeavor.

From what another post stated as theory his phone connected and then failed but I am still 100% active on the T-Mo Network with full blown LTE 5 bars so I need to try and test this out in some for or fashion.

Day 2 No Change. I drove all over Los Angeles to Pacific Palisades and still have excellent 4g LTE! I have yet to drop connection!

I have been using my Google Fi SIM in unlocked 920T for months in Miami. Been traveling across country and just started monitoring what networks I'm using. Download app called Fi Info and you can monitor via widget the network and also force it to use Sprint. Haven't tried US cellular yet. I'm in Ohio now and it's working fine. Will see how it works when I land in Seattle.

Not Getting 4G/LTE on AT&T in the US

So I finally ran Speed Test at several locations on mobile and am only getting 2-3 mb download and 1-2 upload. I have never seen a 4G or LTE symbol next to the signal bars either, it's typically either H or H+. I am on the international model MHA-L29 in the USA, and I know that the locations I've tested my phone at have LTE for AT&T. I activated the phone 2-3 days ago. Is there something I need to do in my settings? Is there anything to check?

Let us know when you fix it ,good luck.
So my forum searching has led me to this path: Buy a cheap 4G AT&T GoPhone ($30), and call AT&T to update my IMEI with the IMEI of the new phone and tell them to activate LTE. Supposedly that worked on AT&T when the original OnePlus came out in the US and people were having the same issue I am having.
Just another update in case anyone is following:
I was able to get though the idiot AT&T prepaid rep and to a tech support guy last night. He said he is going to have them manually enter my IMEI into "the database" and see if that helps get me LTE. My phone is showing as "unknown device" to them right now, so he said check back in a week-ish and see if it's changed from "unknown" to "Huawei Mate 9", which will indicate that my IMEI is in the database. If so, then I check my speeds again. The tech support guy also confirmed that the idea of buying a $30 prepaid AT&T LTE phone and having them update the IMEI with the one from that phone would do the same thing. Anyway, now we wait a week....

It's just because it's an international phone and not officially available on a US carrier (yet). Still sucks though. Supposedly if I switched to T-Mobile it would get LTE out-of-the-box, which I may do if this doesn't work. Lucky I'm on prepaid so switching shouldn't be an issue if I need to.

I'd pretty much guarantee that I'd have LTE on my service provider as long as the correct bands are supported. So it seems like AT&T needs to vet every device for some reason.

Yeah, they (AT&T) do have a "database" for devices, and some international devices are "unknown" unless they're specifically entered. And not just the general device, Huawei Mate 9, I'm talking about specific IMEIs.

Yup, that sounds pretty bad to me. You're paying them for service. They shouldn't care that it's an AT&T or unlocked device. They get paid either way although it kinda sounds like they want to push you toward buying devices through AT&T by making you jump through hoops to discourage you.

I guarantee you that every provider in the US wants you to buy phones through them. It is still capitalism over here There is definitely more bullsh*t to deal with if you bring your own device and/or do prepaid, including crappier customer service, but the trade-off is that it's cheaper and you can switch providers anytime.
Odd, I have a L29 on ATT and LTE works just fine. Put my SIM in and no problems whatsoever.

Weird. How do you know? Do you see an "LTE" symbol in the bar, or "4G"? When you run Speed Test, what are you're DL and UL speeds? Where in the US are you located? Last question (for now), were you already on AT&T with an LTE-equipped phone prior to the Mate 9, and if so, did you just pop in the SIM (did you verbally give AT&T the IMEI of your Mate 9)?

Hey @DKM119, were you already on T-Mo with a LTE-equipped phone prior to switching to the Mate 9? If so, did you give them the IMEI of your Mate 9, or did you just pop the SIM out of the old phone and into the Mate 9? Just trying to prepare in case I do switch to T-Mo.
International unlocked phones refer to LTE as 4G therefore they show 4G icon. when you see 4G on an international phone it means you have lte. quick clarification

Have a chance to get a good deal on a unlocked sprint version.
Then go for it. But be sure to be Sim unlocked and lte bands accepted. The Korean sells for 800$ on eBay. Also can be flashed with European firmware and supports secondary screen. Imo has better quality also software aside. Noticed with LG G7... If you got better deal then go for it.
Are you sure it's unlocked and if so, how was it unlocked? I have a Sprint model and I'm having to wait ‘til my 50 service days are up to get Sprint to unlock it. I've contacted some pretty good unlocking services and hearing the same thing from all; As of now only Sprint can unlock it.
As we all know Sprint 5G service area (like all others) is very small but they're still charging everyone who activates this phone on their service for a 5G service plan regardless of whether they have 5G service in your area or not. I got a great deal on a 3rd party phone but it was locked which I knew going in. As soon as it's unlocked, I'm going to try GFI. BTW, it's a great phone.

Wont be sure until I put my sim card in but it owner says sim unlocked. No interest in 5g anytime soon. If possible will disable/limit to lte.
One thing's for sure.... LG phones drop like a rock! I couldn't wait but I’m thinking in two months this phone's (sprint model) probably going to be selling for $400. Imo the only thing holding the price up for now is there just aren't very many out in the wild. Kind of strange really, since according to the Ifixit breakdown, it has the same Qualcomm 5G X50 modem as both the Galaxy S10 5G phone and the new Note 5G. Otherwise the specs are very similar. I guess it’s all perceived value.

were you able to use wifi calling ? were you able to eliminate the 'activate' message. Thanks
Finally Sim unlocked and ported over to Simple Mobile, a Tmob Mvno. It was relatively painless and took less than an hour for the actual port. No reason to be on Sprint right now if you don't have 5G service in your area. I was on the phone with Sprint yesterday for at least an hour and a half and gave them every chance to do something about my bill. I asked them point blank why anyone would pay for 5G service when it's not even in their area? Their response was just lame. I'm guessing it will be at least one if not two years before 5G is working in a wide spread fashion in a lot of cities in the US.
Now, as for the service on Tmob's network, it's only been about a hour since I switched but have made couple of phone calls and run a couple of speed tests. Phone call quality seems same same and speed test speeds seemed the same as if I were on Tmob., 15 down and about 7-10 on the upload. Now the freaking really good news. Simple mobile is running a special for 3GBs data and unlimited talk, unlimited text. at $25 per month. If you do auto pay after taxes it's $22 and change.
are all t mobile bands available? Does it work with t mobile 5G?
As of right now, there seems to be a problem with the APN record on the sprint model. Sprint, the scumbag company that it is, has locked the APN. They'll unlock the phone to except other sim cards, no problem. But when your new provider tries to register your phone on their network it doesn't fully complete the process. In other words, part of the process is that a new APN record is pushed down to the phone identifying the new MMS DNS server for that network. I use Simple Mobile which is a MVNO of Tmob but Sprint has locked the APN on my V50. I;m still able to get data but can't send/receive pictures via text messages.
So be ware.

does wifi calling work? how are updates handled . thank you
We have a pair of sprint unlocked V50 and just got an update over the metropcs service.
In the service menu it says voice over wifi is provisioned but in the settings network voice over wifi is off and the switch wont stay to on position when i toggle to on.
I still see my cellular connection in the notification area disappear then reappear.
Is this normal behavior or is it trying to activate in background? Maybe it checking for 5G?
I think it using more batt then usual possibly
Now....... finally, some good news and this took a bit of doing. To start off with I originally tried an old Fi sim card I had to port out of Sprint after those scumbags unlocked my V50. I kept getting a T077 error during the Google Fi activation process and Fi support just kept telling me that the V50 wasn't a supported device and they couldn’t help. I told them I thought it was a bad sim card so they suggest I pick up a new one at Best Buy. So, after a trip down to Best Buy I found out that they rarely have Fi cards in stock so I picked up a Simple Mobile (tmob mvno) sim for a buck and the port/activation sort of worked in that I successfully ported my number from Sprint and I was able to make calls and get data but couldn't receive/send pictures (MMS) in text. So, I said screw it and order another Fi Sim card thru the Google site and waited a week. I got it yesterday late and tried it this morning and crap it didn't work with the same activation error, T077. I have been scouring the internet for days for any info the error code and somewhere along the way I remember seeing something about taking the mvno card out and then putting the Fi card in and trying to activate without rebooting the phone. Now remember this is really all about not being able to edit the APN record with the correct DNS info so you can receive MMS picture by text. Anyway, after slipping in the FI sim card to my V50 the activation process suddenly squeaked on thru and low and behold I'm now running on Google Fi with MMS working and APN record is correctly updated the Fi info. I think the reason it worked was that the activation process thought I was a Tmob customer. When it asked me for account info to port my existing number to GFI the dialog screen show things like.... Enter your T-Mobile account number and asked what was the name on my T-Mobile account. But for whatever reason it worked and now I'm finally free of Sprint.
It worked for me but your mileage may very.

ATT suspending Huawei phones?

I've just sold my Mate 20X, and I put my ATT sim card in it one last time to make sure everything was fine. When I did so, my ATT service was suspended. I had to get them to re-enable my sim card. Talking to ATT, they said it's because they don't support Huawei phones anymore. I used this phone on ATT as my primary phone a year ago and never had any problems. Did I just miss this?
I'm slightly worried it's because I gave out my IMEI to a prospective buyer, but the ATT rep said there was no problem with it being blacklisted, just that they don't allow Huawei phones on the system anymore. I'm very suspicious of this, so I thought I'd check here.
I'm still using AT&T and T-Mobile on my AL00 without issues

Happened to me after testing my sim card in a S20 FE. When I put it back on my Mate 20 X the service got disconnected. Called AT&T they say because I need to update to a 4G phone. I told them that my Mate is 4G and they reactivated without issues. The rep that attended me didn't told me that Huawei was not being accepted anymore from AT&T, just that needed to make sure it supports 4G.
I did try it out with Tmobile later and had no problems, and the buyer hasn't reported any issues, so it sounds like just bad information. Thanks for the info!

kin USa idiots at ATT .. pss message to them from me pls !
I got a text message today from AT&T saying "we're sending you a phone. if you don't activate it, we will auto activate it after 30 days and your phone you're using now will only be able to call 911"
This is a huge bummer.
I only got that they are retiring 3G, but nothing that says they are suspending supporting The phone as they have NEVER supported the phone, so thats a crock of crap. The only thing they can do is turn off the 3g band and if your phone doesnt use 4G then your SOL. Mate 20X uses 4G LTE so they cant touch me and if they do they have alot more to answer for.
is Tmobile still going to keep supporting it?
At least from a test

That is what I thought BUT I think I found the issue. If you download an app that check the band your phone is using, you will see that for CALLS the 20x with an ATT sim card, will drop to a 3G band not LTE!
Now, if I try a TMobile sim card and make a call, the phone still shows using LTE band so looks like people with TMobile will be able to keep the phone just fine.
I recently experienced the same thing on my Huawei Mate 20x evr-l29. Call AT&t and they unlocked the suspended account and explain to me my phone is registering as a 3G device. I asked them to look at my network history and they clearly see it's using the 4G LTE network without issues. The representative at tech support said they were noting my account to escalate a ticket to not shut off my device come February. She assure me it will continue to work but we will wait and see.
So I was told that, my wife's Mate 20 x had to activate the new sim card because 3G was tied to the previous sim. Was not the case and they suspended the phone number once I activate the new sim (they also sent a refurbished S9 with the sim). I had to call customer service and escalate for them to reactivate the sim card. I'm now waiting to call their "3G Sunset Department" to try to put my phone on a white list (1-800-880-8581). Seems they are only open during business hours so have to call back then. This has not been a good experience.
So I had a fiasco with AT&T. Props to the services techs that had to deal with me in store and over the phone. They kept their cool and customer service up there. I've just been trying to keep my cool over these two days spending alot of time going between different people and then also swapping to another sim being told that would fix it.
Mate 20X is no longer supported by AT&T. In the case of new customers. Basically they have black listed the model and IMEI numbers of these phones. So when a sim card is inserted the phone line associated with it will be suspended.
To get around this you have to call customer support to have them activate the SIM card so that it will work. Phone calls and Data will work after that.
For my wife's phone I used to have unanswered calls and busy get forwarded to her google voice. With the problem above with the IMEI number being technically blacklisted I was not able to set up google voice again. Took me a couple of calls and an escalation to an advanced tech to have them set up call forwarding from their side. After that the phone works as before for now until they shut off 3G data in February.
Educational moment: After I did some searching online and also a good talk with that advanced tech I found out the reason that this phone is identified as 3G. I blame AT&T for the lack of educational material being sent out and the training of their staff on the phone.
Good article explanation: https://www.androidauthority.com/volte-att-t-mobile-1148654/
The Mate 20X is a 3G voice phone. Even though it is a 4G LTE capable phone it is not a VoLTE/HD Voice phone. Hence the reason why this phone was identified as a 3G device. So basically when the cutoff date comes in February, the phone will not be able to make phone calls or receive texts. Technically it should still be capable of using the 4G data but take this with a grain of salt because they basically blacklisted the IMEI/Model of this phone. So they could just force these to not work anymore.
Here's a list from AT&T that will still work after the change to 3G: https://www.att.com/idpassets/images/support/wireless/Devices-Working-on-ATT-Network.pdf
This is their current compatibility list for unlocked phones: https://www.att.com/idpassets/image...Capabilities-Unlocked-Devices-ATT-Network.pdf
Meh, actions have consequences...

FYI (and I know this is really a late reply), this is incorrect if you were lucky enough to have unlocked the bootloader on your Mate 20 X (EVR-L29) phone (or if you can do so if the opportunity ever arises again in the future).
Thanks to someone else on this forum (posting about a different huawei phone, I've lost the original poster), I've discovered that it IS in fact possible to enable VoLTE on AT&T (ATT) if your phone is rooted.
Before making these changes attempts to make or receive calls will fail even though data and texts will be working and there is a 4g signal symbol.... and going into settings -> wireless & networks -> mobile network will not have the necessary "VoLTE calls" option to turn VoLTE on.
Simple way to enable VoLTE on rooted Mate 20 X on AT&T:
adb shell
su
mount -o rw,remount /
echo "ro.config.hw_volte_on=true" >> /system/build.prop
echo "ro.config.hw_volte_dyn=false" >> /system/build.prop
mount -o ro,remount /
Restart your phone.
The "VoLTE calls" option will now show up, and can be turned on... after which phone calls will again work on the Mate 20 X on AT&T.
I hope this helps someone like it helped me to figure out, even though I know unlocked bootloaders are rare on this phone.
I also couldn't find another phone this size that would work on AT&T (aside from fold ones that I don't want) so really happy that this ended up working.

General Pixel 7 Pro *does* support dual eSIM

I have the factory unlocked 7 Pro and I saw some people say that it doesn't but I just decided to try it. If you disable the pSIM, you can run two eSIMs at the same time. The first try it seemed confused and asked me if I wanted to enable my pSIM then the settings window froze when I hit cancel instead of yes. I swiped it away and tried again and I'm now running dual eSIM!
This is extremely useful for me because I had to convert my Tello pSIM to eSIM in order to fix my 5G (Tello provisioning issue, not a phone issue) but I don't want to always be using my physical SafeLink SIM.
I fall in love with this phone more every day.

Are there any apps available that will let you know which Carrier you are using?
I am assuming that if you were in an area with weak Verizon coverage, that your phone would utilize Tello and vice Versa.

Tello is set as the default for calls and texts, Verizon for data, and Tello is set to automatically use wifi calling over Verizon when the signal is weak.
This is awesome for me because I can park my Tello number that has 2FA for services that don't yet offer TOTP for $5 a month and then get whatever data SIM has the best deal as the other eSIM while having my SafeLink AT&T pSIM in the phone for an emergency backup. No worries about losing my phone number porting it all over the place.
Heck yeah! I just got my eSIM activated for Dual SIM as well. Unfortunately, it took 3 hours on the call with Verizon and multiple support tier escalations to get it done - not sure why it was so challenging for them.
In my case, both my physical SIM and the eSIM are on Verizon (but separate Verizon accounts - one I use for work and one for personal).

Yeah but you can do dual eSIM now and have your SIM slot free for something else too and switch between the second eSIM or pSIM is my point. It opens up a whole lot of flexibility that wasn't there previously.

So you have a Tracfone (Verizon) esim working on this phone? I can't get my Tracfone psim working on this phone (still works with my Pixel 6 Pro though). Spoke to Tracfone for 3 hrs with no luck. Even got a new psim. For the last 3 days I've been communicating with Google support. They said they escalated the issue.
In the meantime I got a Mint Mobile account and am using one of their esims just fine.

I have a SafeLink pSIM that the phone thinks is TracFone since they're the same company. My pSIM is on AT&T though because I refuse to switch to Verizon for it.
The two eSIMs are US Mobile (labeled Verizon by the phone and uses their network) and Tello (T-Mobile network).
I can run any combo as long as it's only 2 active at a time. The phone prompts me which one to use for data and sets the other as the default for calls and texts. They're both active and I have done test calls to each from my Google Voice and both ring - switching which to use for a text is a simple matter of tapping this indicator and choosing.

TracFone customer service was already lacking before Verizon bought them and has only gotten worse but usually their automated tools work well enough.

Ah, ok. Slightly different circumstances then. Yeah, I was very hesitant in switching over to the Verizon sim (was on AT&T) but all those text messages urging me to switch over just made me rip the Band-Aid off, lol.
On a side note, couldn't be happier with Mint Mobile on the T-Mobile Network. Got around 850 mbps download on it compared to maybe a little bit over 100, on a good day, with Tracfone in the same spot.
It is pretty nice we can use 2 eSims now.

Yeah I am sticking with AT&T until they force me off. Verizon is the worst here. The US Mobile SIM was just so I could see if eSIM worked lol, no chance I'll keep it after the 10 day trial.
T-Mobile is indeed excellent in so many areas. I've never seen higher than 560 but hey, 300Mbps during peak time is incredible when Verizon is running around 1Mbps at the same time and AT&T is around 50Mbps.

That sucks. I would have figured that Verizon would only have one whitelist for all the MVNOs. Like my Pixel 7 Pro activated on US Mobile because despite being an unlocked model, it has mmWave, so Verizon added support right away while the unlocked Pixel 7s aren't supported and nobody knows when they will be.
The whole whitelist thing just irritates me period though. If my phone doesn't work, that's my problem, but don't take away the option for me to even try it.

Question SOLVED - Verizon Hotspot not working?

Hey folks,
So I'm in hour 5 with Verizon Support trying to solve this:

I've been with Verizon forever and I've never had this problem before. Hotspot has worked fine for like at least the last 10 years when I have brought my own device. Now they're saying because its a non-Verizon device they can't guarantee all features will work. That makes logical sense, but I"m not using some off brand Chinese knock-off here.
Anybody else has this problem? Did you find a solution?
I have reset APN's to default, I have reset network connections, the Verizon person removed and added the feature to my line. So far nothing has worked.
The same thing is also happening to my wife's P7P as well.
Works fine here. I have a non-VZW P7P. Maybe try making your hotspot name something simple and without special characters....just a guess, but cant hurt to try
I'm Verizon, unlocked 7 Pro. Have you tried having them set you up with e-sim? It'll be a clean provision and maybe that will help. My hotspot works fine as well.
For what it's worth, I have an unlocked rooted P7P and am able to get my hotspot working...
I would think that it's simply on the Verizon server/system side. If you use Android Messages, does the chat/RCS enable/turn on as well? I can't think of other carrier/Verizon enabled "features" but I'm sure there's more, but you should try them also. I would try to narrow down if it's specifically and only hotspot or your total connection to them.
*Also, if it makes a difference or not, I am not on an unlimited plan, but a tiered allotted with carryover data plan...
A sincere thank you to each of you for replying, I'm hoping someone will have a nugget of information that will lead to a solution.

Thanks, but default simple name didn't work, and single word with no special chars didn't work. I also tried each of the different security options and none of those worked. I appreciate the reply, this gives me hope.

I haven't. I'm using the same sim that was in my OnePlus 9 Pro a few months ago and worked fine in it. Maybe something to try though if it comes down to it. Curious if the other posters are on e-sim?
Another user with a working hotspot with the same device, this gives me more hope. I worked with like 7 different Verizon people and more than one claimed to remove the feature and put it back.

*Also, if it makes a difference or not, I am not on an unlimited plan, but a tiered allotted with carryover data plan...

It sure feels that way since the exact same thing is happening to my wife's P7P, with the same sim that worked on her Pixel 4 XL. Everything on the phone seems to work fine, RCS is good. It connects to 5G.
I appreciate the mention of your plan, because I wondered if that could be a contributor, I am also on an old tiered plan with rollover.
I tried contacting Google Support after the Verizon folks threw in the towel, but they were disappointingly useless, and after like 5 minutes asked if I wanted a warranty replacement.
Each of you gives me some hope that I can get this working, but on the other hand it diminishes my hope that a monthly update will fix it, if its solely my problem, and everybody else is working OK.
Anybody else got any ideas?
Vzw support reached back out to me and wants to try again tonight after work, so we'll see how that goes.
I have an unlocked phone (from google), rooted, on Verizon's network, and it works fine. Are you saying you have a phone that is not Verizon branded, on Verizon's network, and hotspot doesn't work? Are you rooted?
I would request a new physical sim as well. Everything worked with my old VZW sim, but the VZW system said I wasnt "registered". I requested a new sim, and that did register properly to the VZW system. In both cases, the Hotspot was working properly. GL!!!!
I would try a new SIMs for both of you. I was able to get away with using my 4G SIM from my Pixel 2 XL onto my Pixel 5 and was able to get 5G fine (hotspot worked in all cases as well). I was able to get it working pretty perfectly when transferring it to me and my wife's P7P -- 5G, hotspot, RCS everything worked just fine -- but only upgraded my SIM because I would have this alert/notification in my My Verizon app & My Account (web portal) alerting the necessity of "registering" my new device and when I would, it complained that it wasn't properly registering into the system and would require a new SIM. Point is; even if everything seemingly works with older SIMs, you never know why/if things might guck up for whatever random reason because of it.
Also, I don't know if you have an unlocked bootloader and are familiar with flashing Full Factory images onto your phone, but if you are (or if you are not, you can consider using the official Android Flash Tool or PixelFlasher), I might consider (even if it might be downgrading) flashing the Full Factory image that was specifically for Verizon. As I understand it, that firmware update has specific modifications to the radio that is tailored & beneficial to the Verizon stations/signal/servers. Just a thought that maybe it might "reset" or set right your & your wife's P7P radio properly to Verizon's including ability to hotspot and/or properly registering your phones to the system...
Good luck!

yes, that is exactly it, hotspot does not work when on cellular coverage. I am not rooted on this device.

you know, there was some weird "registration" communications when I first inserted the sim in this phone about 5G, but there has never been any coverage or connection issues, so I figured whatever it was was resolved. I will request a new sim from them and see what happens.

as mentioned to the quote above, I now remember that I did experience some weird 5G 'registration' issues when I first got the P7P (my wife did not, but her phone exhibits the same issue). I'm going to request a new sim and see what happens.
I am not rooted or rom'ed on this phone, but I was a flasher back in the day, and am comfortable doing some tinkering. I thought about doing the old dun provision check (if that's even still a thing) but have been pursuing conventional support methods so far.

This comment triggered a thought...have you tested your hotspot under LTE, 3G, and 2G/1x signals? I would change these under the radio special menu versus the toggles that's in the normal network settings....I'm curious if it would work on any of these lower signals and/or register it properly if attempted under different signals other than 5G or LTE...

well. define 'radio special menu' for me, I DID test with "preferred network type" set to LTE & 3G and that did not help.
EDIT: oh, you mean the *#*# #*#* type menu?

yes, although I have not been able to get the *#*#*#* method to work since the Pixel 2, but there are other ways to get to the advanced "Phone Info" "Set Preferred Network Type" option (although the *#*#* method may have changed/been updated and I just haven't tried it since...)
I was having this same exact issue just the other week. Unlocked P7P on Verizon and never had this issue on my previous P6P. I tried a number of things like resetting network settings, forcing 4G and seeing if it would work but I would still get the authentication failed message. I read on other forums and most of the solutions ended up contacting verizon and they would have to fix it on their end. I normally try to avoid contacting support but I ended up opening a chat with a verizon rep and they had me do the typical troubleshooting steps that I already did but nothing worked. After going back and fourth the rep asked me to restart my phone as he did something on his end but he didn't say what he did. After I restarted my phone it actually worked and my hotspot was working again. I used it a few days later and hotspot was still working but I haven't used it since and now while I type this I tried enabling my hotspot and I'm getting the same error again. I'm gonna end up contacting verizon again to see what's going on but I have no idea why specifically the P7P has this issue. I as well have been using unlocked phones since the P2XL and never had this issue. Hoping to get a permanent fix for this.

*#*#4636#*#* gets you into the test menu...
ok guys, issue is solved!
I took off work this afternoon and drove into town to attempt to acquire a new sim. I was told the wait would be 45-60 minutes, so I bailed and came back home. I then started up with Verizon support on chat after work. I was planning to ask for a sim to be mailed to me, but they offered to switch to e-sim, so I switched over to e-sim tonight and the issue seems to be resolved.
one of the multitude of techs tonight did tell me that she was having trouble ordering a new sim because there was some sort of conflict.
