Proximity sensor and sound issues - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I've been on stock roms since I got my Nexus 5 (almost two years, so it's still on warranty [local law]), and since I updated to 6.0, I started having issues with the proximity sensor. Sometimes it wouldn't turn off the screen in calls, and it would generally stop working (I use gravity screen, which relies heavily on the proximity sensor, so that allowed me to become more aware of the problem. The proximity sensor would resume normal operation after a while.
I googled the issue, and apparently it's common since the 6.0 update, so I assumed a software bug. Anyway, last night the problem got worse. For example, if I was playing a video on youtube, with audio coming from the speakers (didn't try with headphones), the video would go silent. It can happen during playback (suddenly it just goes silent) or you start the video and it is silent. Other media apps report the same behaviour. This is an on/off problem, as it might or might not occur.
Also, during calls, it also started silencing the phone speaker. As with all the problems I reported, this is on/off. When the phone speaker is silent, the proximity sensor stops working. When this happens, I'm able to use the speaker phone to actually engage in the conversations.
Another thing that is really weird is that, if a media app stops reproducing sound (although sound should be playing), and I start a phone call immediately, the phone speaker will not emit sound but if I change it to speaker phone (audio coming from the speakers) the speakers work fine!
I've since flashed CWM recovery and a cyanogenmod snapshot (cm-12.1-20150901-SNAPSHOT-YOG4PAO237-hammerhead.zip) and the problem persists!
I'm writing this thread in the hopes that someone might know a fix for these issues, or if someone knows if these are common. Otherwise, I'll have to send the phone for warranty...
I searched around for this problem and couldn't find a reference to it. I was not very thorough, however, so I apologize if I missed something.
TL;DR - Having some issues regarding the proximity sensor (it stops working and resumes working for no reason) and when this happens, no sound comes out of the phone speaker during calls and no sound comes from the speakers during media playback. When the problem happens during a call, the speaker phone can be activated to interact with the other person. Does anyone know anyone that might be experiencing the same issues?
Thanks!

Sound Bug - Bottom speaker sound going through ear speaker/not working at all.

Occasionally the sound in the bottom speakers will stop working and some apps will play through the ear speaker instead. When this happens Google Music, Youtube and some other apps won't work at all. For example pressing play in either of those apps does nothing, as in the play button never changes to a pause button. My alarm app on the other hand plays through the ear speaker instead of not working at all. The ear speaker sound volume is very quiet and doesn't appear to be controlled by the media volume either.
The only remedy that I've been able to find for this is a phone reboot
Wanted to bump this thread -
I originally thought this issue was related to Bluetooth because I use multiple bluetooth devices, but this has happened again recently when I didn't use any Bluetooth devices.
I have the exact same issue, and it's occurrence is random. This started happening a month back. I'm guessing this is due to some software update or something, but its really annoying and the only fix is a reboot.
Anyone has any ideas, whats going on ?
It's been happening multiple times a day lately! It's gotten substantially worse over the past month. I was watching a video, sent a text and when I went to resume it wouldn't play - low and behold the bug came back.. definitely appears to be completely random.
i think that there is somthing with your connection

With my connection to what?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using XDA-Developers mobile app
This problem is driving me crazy
I have the exact same issue. Factory reset and update to newest firmware didn't help any idea?
Wash your phone. And wait till it dry.
I (and other person that I know) have the same issues.
No sound from bottom, and sometimes during the call no audio (I can't ear evrything and the other don't ear me).
Now I'm tring the mobile phone in safety mode.
And I've seen (for the edge version) that next android could fix the problem.
Someone have any update?
Have you tried the safety mode?
Im pretty sure its caused by Facebook messenger and Skype
From what I can tell, this seems to happen when you are playing any kind of audio, such as a video or game, and then receive a notification. You then go to the notification to respond to it and go back to your app that was playing the audio and the issue appears. It seems to be an issue, at least with me, whenever notification is received and subsequently answered.

Intermittent Loudspeaker Issue

I haven't seen anyone else reporting this issue, but (unlike the distortion issue) I am also having an issue with my loudspeaker. It only works some of the time.
I've missed notifications, alarms, and had issues listening to music, getting Google Assistant to talk, and watching youtube. Sometimes my Pixel just makes no sounds. When I notice it, I can often get audio working by trying several different audio producing apps, although I have had times where I simply have to wait, and the next time I try (maybe hours later) the audio is working again.
Has anyone else had this issue? I've definitely not been very impressed by this phone, wish I could go back to my N5.

WhatsApp Voice Message Audio Leak to Louder Speaker

When listening to a WhatsApp Voice Message via earpiece (i.e. proximity sensor) and another message arrives or any other notification, the audio is routed to the louder speaker for few seconds (length of notification audio) then routed back earpiece. So everybody around will hear that audio message.
This is extremely annoying is privacy disaster . Is it happening anyone ? Does anyone know how to solve?
Phone: Xiaomi Mi 5
All roms are affected (even AOSP ROMs)
i face this problem too. i feel that it is not whatsapp's problem but how the firmware handles notifications itself. i may be wrong though
Any thoughts of this guy's?
I have the exact same problem on my Nexus6P for a while. I'm not sure, but I think since I bought it. The same happened to a friend of mine with his Nexus5X. Haven't been able to solve it yet.
My only workaround is to react quickly to take the phone off my ear and resume the audio once the notification ringtone has finished playing.
no luck so far? I wonder how is this tolerated by millions of users? it's quite annoying :crying:
Sound
I got this problem too, but only in LineageOS builds, and I've reported this to the developer of my ROM (Moto G4 Play - Harpia) and he didn't understand the issue. On Pixel Experience ROM there ir no such a problem.

Sometimes when I listen to audio notes on Whatsapp the volume goes high suddenly

After getting my new Pixel 2, I've been noticing a strange behavior while using Whatsapp.
The audio notes on Whatsapp can be played both on "loudspeaker" or "phone speker" mode, depending on how you hold your phone if far or close to you ear. This is determined by the proximity sensor, I guess.
The BIG problem is that when I hold the phone close to my ear to privately listen to the audio notes I've received, the audio starts low (normal) but suddenly goes high as if it was on "loudspeaker" mode. This is deafening! My ear really hurts when it's happening!!!
I guess this is a huge problem, like causing real immediate injuries...
I wonder if this is a problem with my phone only or it's a common one.
I've already tried to reinstall Whatsapp but with no sucess.
Please, help.
Regards.

No solution, but I've encountered the same issue as well. Even though the phone was against my head, it was like the sensor malfunctioned or something. Maybe it's something Google could fix?

Proximity sensor muting calls

Hi,
So when making a call the other person can't hear me or hears me very low. I figured out that if I move my face away from the proximity sensor the mic works normally. The fact that some people say they can hear me very low could mean that one mic at the top of the phone is not affected.
Is there a setting anyone can suggest or a way to reset the settings without doing a factory reset.
This might have happened after a recent update.
Thanks.
