Why the GPU performance on custom ROMs is far below the stock ROM? - Moto Maxx Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There is a problem with the system kernel or something that causes such a significant loss in performance of the Droid Turbo games ? The drop frames when running games like Asphalt 8, GTA SA , Modern Combat 5 comes to pass of 10 frames with pretty annoying lags that are not in stock ROM .
I wish I could use some custom on a daily basis but this problem with the GPU requires me to stay in outdated and vulnerable ROM Stock 5.0.2 :crying:
These prints of AnTuTu show a bit of difference seems small but is quite noticeable in games:

Not only for the Droid Turbo. Moto Maxx has the same issues. I've been saying this for a while now, but no one seems to listen. ("In my phone, games run great with this rom or that rom") but I've tried flashing and reinstalling, going back and forth from ROMs, different kernels, but in all ROMs it seems like the Maxx lags like heck... Dont get me wrong, these developers are doing a heck of a job with this, but I remember the Moto X 2014 switching from stock to CM12.1 was incredibly smooth, didnt lose any performance and it was a "never going back" situation. Is the Turbo / Moto Maxx that different under the hood from the other Motorola phones?

Ihad the same experience with MotoMaxx

I agree with you guys, the CM roms are indeed fast but the GPU stutters slightly when scrolling on my XT1225.
Perfect example, download the Google Keep app in the play store and put a bunch of notes in there and scroll through them.
It is clearly much smoother on stock rom which I'm on now, than it is on CM12.1.
However I just tried out 11/11 CM12.1 nightly and it looks to be a bit more smoother than it was.
I'm thinking that it might have something to do with the fact that the source code for the Moto Maxx 5.1 kernel was just released at the tail end of October and they just started incorporating it into the CM12 nightlies shortly after that.
Hopefully over the next month or so they will be able to better optimize the kernel with the rom itself to eliminate the stutter.
Other than that the devs for this phone are doing an awesome job as this is the only issue I found with CM12.1.
As a side note, I wonder if there are updated Adreno 420 drivers for our phone, maybe that would help?

OK I think in found a solution to the problem.
For some reason some devices with CM12.1 don't play nice with the default CPU governor called interactive.
So I changed the governor to conservative using the Kernel Adiutor app in the play store and bingo!
Now the ROM is buttery smooth.
Try out the latest Resurrection Remix as it works best with that ROM.
However it does work with the latest CM12.1 nightly too.
Hope this helps as it's like night and day for me.

I think change gorvenor to conservative dont solve the problem.
To me dont make any difference, the better Gorvernor works well with my Moto maxx are Interactive_pro.
To getter better perfomance of my phone, i need change Thermal Frequency Throttle to 80º C, most custom roms use Intellithermal method, and they are very sensivity to temperature.
If you choose 80º C, they will reach in max 70º to begin the throttle the processor.
Stock Custom Roms are 60ºC in Thermal Frequency Throttle, i change to 80ºC and my phone are very fast now.

Apparently it makes a difference if your screen is on or off as well. Stock cm12.1 48,614 with the screen off it was 43,000.
I have noted my battery life is better on cm12.1. At 6pm I was at 82% normally I would be nearing 60% at that time of day.
Now granted I have less apps currently installed. I'm still impressed. This makes sense though, obviously if I'm getting lesser scores CPU usage should be down making the battery life better.
For what it is worth the note 3 and the turbo are very similar devices and the turbo blows the note 3 out of the water on this test.

I had some UI stuttering, but it was almost completely gone when I used BayButcher's kernel and its custom settings with Kernel Adiutor (isn't really meant to be "Auditor"?).

No, it's a Latin word. Means "helper" or "assistant".
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/adiutor
Dev chose the word Adiutor on purpose as it describes the app.

[Q] Which ROM's don't have black screen of death

Which ROM's here do not have the issue with the black screen of death? (When the phone will sometimes just not come out of sleep mode sometimes, often when charging or with wifi turned on)
I know that Cyanogenmod has the issue, but what about other ROM's? I'm looking for a nice GB ROM that wouldn't have this issue.
Reborn doesn't do that for me.

I have not had a BSOD on PA CM10 Build 9, v21y, and Mazouts latest kernel yet. Battery performance could be better though.
Thanks for the suggestions. I tried CM10 and didn't like the lack of hardware acceleration. So I'm waiting on CM10.1 for that. Hopefully some of the BSOD issues will be resolved there. In the mean time, looks like I have some ROM's to look at.

+1 for a lot of truth in it! It's also phone-dependent. Not all phones experience BSOD's with all kernels. It's an art to mixing and matching the kernel to your phone that gives the best performance. For example, my phone is SUPER-PICKY when it comes to Kernels. I can't OC my phone above 1.2Ghz or the phone will just randomly reboot. Also, ALL kernels cause my phone to BSOD while charging. I have to enable the preference to never let my phone go to sleep while charging. Before you start suggesting solutions to this, I have tried everything from increasing the voltage of the lower frequencies. I have tried eliminating the lower frequencies while sleeping. All of it. My phone is just a PITA when it comes to charging. I can live with it being on all the time while charging.
Yeah being on while charging is no big deal. How do you do this though? I only found a setting to keep the display on for 30 minutes tops in my G2x running CM 7.2.

your welcome
"Well, bust my buttons! Why didn't you say that in the first place? That's a horse of a different color!"
The "Settings-->Applications-->Development->Stay Awake" trick works for me as well. I'm running cm7 -20130201-nightly on the v21y baseband with the 2.6.32.60-mazkrnl.GB kernel. Without the stay awake setting enabled the phone will still freeze but I haven't had the a problem since enabling the setting over two weeks ago. I also have a Titanium Backup schedule set up that alternates between backing up new applications and saving modified data at 3:30am every night with a device reboot for good measure.
This is the first time in the almost two years I've owned the phone that I've been fully satisfied with it. I feel like I can live out the rest of my three year contract with the phone now without a problem. I guess the note 2 (or a sony xperia device, I can't decide) will have to wait, my G2X still has some fight in it yet.
I must also note that I have never had an issue with any of the ics of jb ROMs. The last ROM I was running was "[Dez 30] [P999][ROM][CM10] ParanoidAndroid v2.56 Hackfest JB [build9beta]." I used it for over a month but the lack of a decent camera, no video recording ability, wifi drain, general battery drain and battery indication problems eventually became too much. The ROM itself was stable as a rock but the small issues become too much after a while.

[BENCHMARK ] Finding the ULTIMATE gaming experience.

Hi. I am looking for the BEST gaming experience on our TF700, but doesn't matter how many ROMs I,ve tested I can't get satisfied.
Please post your results here:
Plan:
1. ROM name.
2. KERNEL name.
3. CPU / GPU settings.
4. Benchmark name and results. (Please use Quadrant, but others are OK too.)
5. MODs, tricks, whatever you want to add.
6. Your Gaming experience, for example: Gangstar Vegas is playable but a bit laggy.
__________________________________________
So, I'm gonna start:
1. CROMi-Xenogenesis 4.7.0
2. JB 4.2.1 ★ Hundsbuah ★ 10.6.1.14.8 ★ v3.2.0
3. CPU: All 4 cores set to: 1850Mhz GPU: 775Mhz
4. Quadrant:

5. No MODS, No DATA2sd, 32gb version. I was using Hundsbuah program to set CPU / GPU and may have enabled gaming mode. Gaming mode slows CPU down when it gets to hot. That may have affected the score. I was running this benchmark 3 times, and once I got something like 5009 overall? Much lower, but it was generally I/O.
6. Gangstar Vegas (Gangstar 4) playable, bit laggy, but not all the time, just time to time. 5 seconds normally, 2 seconds of Lag, and so on.
GTA Vice City:
Bit Laggy on maximum settings, quite good on lower settings.
GTA III: Simmilar to Vice City, a bit better.

Agree, but this is noit the point. I know we aren't getting everything from this device. I saw it on my HTC Sensation. How much OS matters. So Please post your scores. Let's find the best solution.
You've got some serious performance issues there. With Hunds OC to 1700 on 4 cores and gpu at 600 I get 6800+ on quadrant.
You've done something wrong somewhere. Have you got fsync disabled?

Sdbags is tottally right, i just recently went over to hunds with f sync disbled,
i havent adjusted any clock speeds myself and i tend to get a quadrant score of around 6500,
as for your over clocking and gaming, im not 100% sure if thats the best thing to do due to the heat it can cause and such,
i could be tottally wrong with my last line but i am being cautious and reading up a fair bit before i crank everything up,
havent found a definitive answer on that yet unfortunately.

You are right. With that high OC he will most likely achieve the opposite of what he actually wants to.
Not the OC is the problem, but the temperature control. But you do have a good point. I'll try getting lower. Thanks guys

I have the version with 16 GB and 2 GB of RAM !!!
That's a huge difference, did you clean update or just took the OTA?
To tell you the truth your first result with 5.01 was very low even with that firmware.your second result with 5.1.1 is normal.after we update our rom or get a new device we should at first reset to defaults to minimise the risk of bad flashing.

Good result!
Got a H955 on Friday. Updated to 5.1.1. Running completely stock at the moment.
Ran 3 test back to back:
1) 53703
2)52253
3) 47712
Throttling cost 11.2%
Thought to myself: Never really done back to back testing on my LG G2 - lets see what happens.
Test one was around 36000, Test two around 30000 and Test three around 29500. Throttling cost 18% The G2 was warm to the touch, and throttled quicker. I've been more than happy with my G2 for nearly 2 years.....
For me it seems the bigger problem was LG's implementation of Android at launch.
I put the air conditioning on the phone and was able to hit 57000!
I did a test again for the first time in a few days, and got 53829. A few days ago I did a test right after a reboot, but my score was pretty terrible then. It was about 43 000, I think.
Did a second test and got 50042.

Guys, if you force gpu rendering, the phones cpu gets freed up to do the more important stuff and the battery actually improved a bit too. Guessing that adreno 430 is a bit more power efficient then the a57 cores.

First time I ran this the day I got the phone I got about 4800 on geekbench3.
Since then, rooted and debloated a little at a time... it just keeps getting faster and smoother.
I got this score running the Noble Alpha kernel tonight, after removing more bloat.
Benchmarks in and of themselves do not prove much. But when comparing same device performance when tweaking, I do believe they are a good indication of performance loss or gains.
I can say... I'm impressed with the note 5.

Using darthstalker v4 with xposed running in the bakground, skyhigh 2.1 kernel with a57 locked to 2.4 and a general undervolt of -87.5mv accross the board (-100mv actually on the a53 cores) and 852mhz gpu clock (so basically i m kinda maxed out ) ) everything runs perfectly smooth and stable and my main goal with all.the tweaking actually is to know that i ll be golden till the note 7 comes out LOL (at least).

what's the point of a custom kernal?

I am fairly new to rooting and have the op7pro rooted and was wondering what the deal is custom kernals and what the benefits are and how hard it is to use one
Its modification of the stock kernal that can provide extra features, improve performance and battery life. They all are a bit different and there really inst a better one of them all. Its all personal preference so I recommend giving them all a try for a few days and see how your phone performs.

Kernels allow you to modify the governor's behavior or use alternatives, boost parameters, clock speed, memory thresholds, block wakelocks, under or overclock, etc. They're often accompanied by newer drivers (ex. Wlan from CAF), Linux upstreams, fixes from QC, new features like k lapse, and so on.
CPU governors and boost can be tailored to be aggressive or passive. I'm more concerned with endurance than scores, so the latter suits me.
I have mixed feelings on custom kernels nowadays. I used to be enthusiastic, but eventually realized that every rose has its thorns. Some custom kernels are truly excellent on certain phones. Some phones just don't play nice with custom kernels, and you could lose features until you flash a different kernel. Modern Android stock kernels are stock for a reason, in the same sense that some wearable things are "one size fits all". The good thing is that kernels are super easy to flash on a bootloader unlocked & rooted phone!

That also means nothing without the battery graph as the user could have partially charged the phone and that doesn't rest anything until the phone is fully charged to 100%. Not saying he can't get that, I'm getting 9 to 10 hours sot per charge. Just need to show the battery graph too.
